Q&A

Andrew Mcleay He works with homeless people in Ealing every day at the Ealing Soup Kitchen, yet rather than talking about the sadness of the rising numbers of people using the facility at St John’s Church on Mattock Lane in West Ealing, Andrew Mcleay wants to share a few of the ‘good news’ stories that he’s come across...

S “Please tell people about us – we can only be effective to the community if they know who we are”

Q&A

o what are the numbers like at the Ealing Soup Kitchen? How many people use the facility, how many staff, how many volunteers..? > On average over the four days we’re open we serve something like 350 people. Currently I’m the only paid staff – the rest are volunteers, with about 14 volunteers for our drop ins, and about 10 usually on each session at the weekend soup kitchen. Ealing Soup Kitchen is there for people who have hit rock bottom, so does this often

mean that they rise up again after coming to you? Tell us a couple of these “feel-good” stories. > We have two core volunteers who used to be homeless; they are now housed, and give back by serving with us – there’s a new video coming out which talks a bit more about that soon. We also had a guy who dropped by a few months ago to tell my colleague

Alan that through our help, he managed to get accommodation and a new job, and he was really enjoying it, and came to give a donation. There’s also another man who used to be homeless and got a bed in Ealing Churches Winter Night Shelter. Through them and us he got accommodation and a job over Stratford way – but travels all that way to help us at our soup kitchen most weekends. What is the number one thing that everyday

Ealing people can do to support you all at Ealing Soup Kitchen? > There are a few ways: consider donating in whatever way you can (money, clothes, time, sleeping bags etc). Please tell people about us – we can only be effective to the community if they know who we are. Be our ‘street team’ – especially to the local homeless you see!! @EalingSoup ealingsoupkitchen ealingsoupkitchen.org – interview by Carlene Bender
