his cake is something else. What’s the story behind it? > It’s a chocolate stout drizzle cake which also happens to be vegan, and it has been specially made to fuel fellow Ealing businesses attending the Small Business Saturday speed networking event. The event was the perfect opportunity to talk about the opening of my business, The Dodo Micropub, so I thought why not celebrate with cake! Product samples of beer wouldn’t have been the best idea, so chocolate cake infused with stout was the next best thing I could offer. And in keeping with the Small Business Saturday theme, I used local Hanwell brewery Weird Beard Brew Co’s Decadence Stout in the recipe.

Keeping things local is definitely something we’ll be promoting in the micropub. “The Dodo Micropub”! When I saw your posts about delays setting up, I thought that must all be part of the branding... > Although I do have a marketing background, with a career in publishing and education, I didn’t orchestrate these delays as part of a clever branding strategy! I’d wanted to be open by now since getting

and karaoke nights to instead promote conversation as the main form of entertainment. That’s all very “Ealing”, isn’t it? West London’s first micro-brew-pub, The Owl & The Pussycat, is now open on Northfield Avenue, and I think everyone should check them out Why do you think the micropub to get a feel for the concept. business model suits Ealing? In the meantime, I’ll be popping > I think the micropub business up at the Eat Me Drink Me model is ideal for Ealing! A W5 Food Market outside Ealing micropub is very much about Town Hall on Sun 11, Sat 17 community, keeping things local, and Sun 18. Do stop by to try! and showcasing independents. It @thedodomicropub shuns big-screen sports thedodomicropub.com serious about the business at the Ealing Business Expo last year. But the Council have been incredibly slow in moving along the change of use and lease completion process. Launch now looks likely in January 2017.

Networking with energy BROADWAY W13 > At the Contactus magazines Ealing SmallBizSat Speed Networking session on Saturday, Ealing-based small business owners had 40 seconds every time the horn honked, to sum up their business event or offer, and make an effort to engage with the person sitting opposite them. Thankfully we had Lucy’s The Dodo Micropub cake (see pages 2-3) to top up the energy once we were done. @ContactusEaling Below: Joanna Dudzinska of English Lessons Online and Offline (left, front) connects with Nicola Rae-Wickham of A Life More Inspired Below right: Marisa Fernandes-Stuart of The Will Associates tries a sample of the chocolate stout drizzle cake Bottom: The networkers slowing down a bit after the speed

Follow-up tour WEST EALING STATION W13 > Joanna Dudzinska’s latest off-the-beaten-track walk through West Ealing, on Saturday, was advertised as “focusing on the area we didn’t visit on our previous tour”. Attendees (like Laurie O’Garro, see column at right) weren’t let down. The next scheduled walk is on Sunday 11 December, 11am to 1pm, entitled “Chiswick meets Acton” and will involve revisiting the studio of mosaic artist Carrie Reichardt, and other pleasant surprises. It is an opportunity for English learners to practise, and for Ealing “natives” to become like tourists in their own town. Ealing Walking, Talking and Exploring Group

West Ealing by Night Sat 3 Dec

By Laurie O’Garro

I

’d heard about Joanna’s tours of Ealing and surrounding areas and they sounded interesting. For a start, I thought it was fantastic that someone was taking the time to value West Ealing, a relatively small part of a large capital, and I wondered how many fascinating facts could be uncovered in such a small part of West London. I was so glad I went. First of all, Joanna welcomed me like a long-lost friend. She has a wonderful, open spirit that left me in no doubt that this would be a tour worth remembering! Our first stop was the Alexandria Healing Centre, close to West Ealing train station. The shop assistants were expecting us and invited us to look around at their crystals. I wasn’t expecting this, but I was in my element. After prising ourselves out of the shop, we stopped outside a house a few doors down, which was recording the world’s longest music video: any noise it picked up inside or out, would be recorded. Joanna’s innate inquisitiveness meant that she picked up on quirky goings-on in the area and shared what she’d learned with her ‘tourists’. The tour took in murals painted by children on the walls of an estate onto a house on Eccelstone Road whose occupants have been decorating the garden every Christmas for 20 years. Our penultimate visit was to a Polish supermarket, which I absolutely loved! We were given sweets and cakes to take away with us and we all bought food to take home. The shop assistants were lovely. I’ve walked past the shop hundreds of times and now I will go in. Our final stop was the Orchard Cafe which was hosting an Islamic art exhibition. Throughout the walk, Joanna shared little-known historical facts about West Ealing, drawing our attention to the architecture, decor and street names. The tour was fun, interesting and educational, merging recent changes to the area with older aspects of this part of Ealing.
