Q&A

elcome back to the W5 Food Market, we missed it! Your weeks are getting busier with Crafted W5 in the shopping centre on the first Saturday of the month, the W5 Food Market returning to Ealing Town Hall on Sunday and more markets on the horizon. What’s new with the Sunday market this year? > We’ve all the food you’d expect from a farmers’ market – fish, meat, cheese, cakes, fruit/veg, bread and more – which makes it a great alternative to the supermarket. We’ll also have some of the best street food names like Mama’s Jerk Station. It’s bigger than ever and more of a day out with a kids’ craft tent, live music, pop-up wine bar from Acton’s Park+Bridge, and a collaboration between Tea Walla and Ealing’s ‘Three Little Pigs’ to create a tea and macaroon tent.

How does the Crafted W5 market fit in with the Eat Me Drink Me food concept? > I’ve always been into fashion and design and was regularly asked if I could include craft stalls in my markets, so it seemed a natural step. There is so much talent locally that we decided to create a market that celebrated that and allowed us to extend our ‘Keep it Local’ initiative to makers and artisans too.

What’s this ‘Keep it Local’? > Markets are a great way to get products in front of local people, but they can be daunting. With the support of Ealing Council, ‘Keep it Local’ means we can offer practical support and advice to new market businesses. Local designers Charlotte Berridge, Rebecca Buttons and Frame Your World all started their market businesses with Crafted W5. Your “Wonderland Collective” idea sounds intriguing. Any details to spill?

> The Wonderland Collective will combine local designers and businesses with artisans from across London in a regular indoor pop-up. Our first event is on Sat 12 November at Drapers Arms. Then on 18 November we’ll set up in the shopping centre for the five-week Ealing Christmas Market. It’s going to make Ealing a onestop shop for all your Christmas presents, and very different to what’s currently available here. www.eat-me-drink-me.co.uk @EatMeDrinkMeLDN EatMeDrinkMeUK – interview by Carlene Bender

An Ealing Half Marathon story NORTHALA FIELDS UB5 > The main photo on page 6 of last week’s edition of The_Ealinger featured two runners wearing the yellow and green Ealing, Southall and Middlesex Athletics Club vest. We were delighted later on to find out a bit about their story. Here it is, thanks to Claire King, one of the runners we pictured:

“J

ust wanted to let you know about two of my team mates who took part in the Ealing Half Marathon. Debbie Gorman (in The_Ealinger photo with me) and Maria Lancaster, who 18 months ago struggled to run for 30 seconds, took part in their first half marathon. They had been hoping to raise a few pounds for our local parkrun, Northala Fields to replace broken and damaged equipment. “Rather than ‘a few pounds’, however, they raised over £1000 – which will now be put towards buying a defibrillator for the park! “Parkrun and ESM running club have been so supportive of us all and so to give something back is a great honour.” www.esm.org.uk @esm_ac @EalingHalf

Above right: Maria Lancaster (left) and Debbie Gorman present a cheque for £1105 to Steve Pound MP on Saturday morning, which coincidentally was Parkrun’s 12th birthday. At right: Maria and Debbie volunteering at EHM 2015 when, according to their friend and running coach Claire, “they said they would NEVER run this themselves! Fast forward to 2016...” Well done to the runners, and thank you for your fundraising.

George Bernard Shaw in Acton HIGH STREET W3 > It was Paddy O’Keeffe as George Bernard Shaw that drew The_Ealinger contributor Joanna Dudzinska to the Acton Trade Unions Club last Friday. The “one-man play is followed by an impromptu Q&A session at the bar. It could go on for much longer if the actor didn’t have to go back to Brighton,” reported Joanna. The play continues this weekend.

Ealing’s Thursday art fair NEW BROADWAY W5 > Part of the Make it Ealing (Ealing Broadway Business Improvement District) mandate is to boost footfall to the Ealing town centre. Since August, the Long Summer Nights Art Market in front of the Town Hall on Thursday afternoons has been doing just that, while “encouraging conversation about art” in the borough. The_Ealinger contributor Joanna Dudzinska stopped by the market last Thursday and met with Jackie Pannier-Taylor, who was showing her “spiritually guided paintings”. The market ends this Thursday, 6 October. Below: Jackie with some of her work. Bottom: Tunisian ceramics on sale. @makeitealing
