Q&A As the W5 Physio team of physiotherapists gets busy with their usual pre-Ealing Half Marathon buzz, co-founder and director Greg Bagley takes a minute to talk about running in Ealing

t’s September. Which means one thing in our borough: it’s Ealing Half Marathon season! Is there a bit of a buzz at W5 Physio whenever September rolls around? > Yeah there definitely is, it’s a great race and quite rightly has won awards for being a very well organised and supported race. Some of the buzz is unfortunately because people come in injured and are trying desperately to get fixed, but it’s a positive vibe and everyone does their best to make the start line.

When is the best time to sort out “a little niggle”? > Little niggles are funny things, a lot of them will clear up within days or a week of presenting. If a niggle lasts for more than a week, or indeed gets worse after each run, then it should be

seen to asap. Often this might be right before the race, so we just help get the runner through the race, then do the corrective rehabilitation after to cure the problem. Your hands-on human expert touch is certainly amazing, but how do you also involve technology in your diagnoses and treatments? > We are very lucky to have a real-time diagnostic ultrasound Online readers: click to check out the W5 Physio video channel

scanner in the clinic – this has been a brilliant addition as it can show each patient what’s going on ‘live’, and also help a more accurate diagnosis and therefore treatment plan to get them back running faster. If only we had a machine to make people do their exercises more regularly! Over the years, have you spotted any injury patterns among your customers in Ealing? > The two main problems in runners we see

are iliotibial band and Achilles tendon issues. Both of these things can be caused by things like cranking up the mileage too soon, not doing enough strength training (there is fantastic evidence to support strength training in runners), and not doing enough cross training (swim or cycle as a break from pounding the road). Again, if these injuries occur, they are entirely fixable, but best done post-race. w5physio.co.uk @W5Physio W5Physio – interview by Carlene Bender

Photos below show the clinic’s ultrasound scanner in use. At left: scan of a calf muscle tear. The tear of the muscle fibres creates the black oval shaped ‘hole’ in the middle. The blackness is blood within the muscle as a result of the tear.

Thanks for Cricketforfun POPES LANE W5 > A season of not-so-great attendance due to a late-starting summer meant Cricketforfun in Ealing 2016 never lived up to last year’s promise (see our promo video in the link at right). But thanks to the support of five local businesses, whose sponsorship covered the costs of staging the games, we went ahead and had a good time anyway. We’d like to give one last shout-out to game sponsors Jo Baldwin-Trott (Colour First image consultants), Loredana Baranga (Marketology digital marketing), Isabelle Morley-Fletcher (Isabelle Scott design and build), and finally this week’s sponsor, Anita Wong (Ealing Connect networking – see photos below). If you managed to come along and take part in any of the games, we’re glad you had fun.

Contact Rory Thomas According to Rory Thomas, covering the event for @rorythomasb The_Ealinger, in the press room afterwards, when asked about cuts and closures at Ealing Hospital McDonnell said: “It’s just a nightmare … I’m hoping even this government will have to think again, we can’t go on like this. “To start closing units and undermining the health service in West London will have consequences, safety consequences,” McDonnell added. #Brentfest loving in Ealing BLONDIN PARK W5 > It’s called the Brentford Festival because it was started over in the borough of Hounslow in 2005. But since moving across to Ealing’s Blondin Park in 2013, the festival has got even bigger and better, according to organiser Linda Massey. This year’s festival on Sunday continued to involve performers, businesses and visitors from both neighbouring boroughs, and despite the day-long darkening by grey skies overhead, local residents still turned out to enjoy the event. @BrentfordFest

The meetup only lasted an hour but each of the 10 or so business-owners attending the meetup made the most of the opportunity to share their pitch with the group.
