ave us a trip to Wikipedia then – what is futsal? Is it that different to football? > The question “is it that different to football?” is key, and the answer is different depending on who you ask. The first obvious difference is the ball. It is smaller, slightly heavier and has a reduced bounce. It is the reduced bounce that makes all the difference. The ball will “stick” and can be moved quicker. Generally the game is played on an indoor court approximately 25m by 40m. It can also be played outdoors but the surface must be solid. No grass! Whether it is kids or adults the game is 5v5. Small sided games are great for developing technique and decision making. Research shows that players get more touches and make more decisions than during regular 11v11 games. But, as someone once pointed out to me, futsal or football, it is all people kicking a ball around! Your Chiswick Juniors launched last Monday. How did it go? > Session one served as an

introduction to futsal for the new players. Seeing what knowledge and experience they already possessed, working over a few basic techniques and giving them something that they seemed to enjoy. Numbers were good for a first session but we still have plenty of space. We play at Brentford Fountain, and our plan is to develop partnerships with football clubs in the vicinity and offer their players an opportunity to hone technical skills within futsal and perhaps spark a love for the game. Why do you think children would be drawn to the game?

Are there separate girls futsal teams? > Futsal is an exciting game. It is played at a high tempo with lots of goals and action. The high number of touches and decisions mean that participants are always involved. There is a reduced level of physicality when compared to football which means that some children feel more comfortable playing futsal. Both boys and girls are welcome to our sessions.

at the club with eye catching skills. To highlight individuals as future professionals is, in my opinion, unfair. It gives them and their parents expectations which can create unnecessary pressure. I just want the players to have fun and try their hardest. Who knows where this could take them? A day in the life of Peter Prickett:

When David Beckham dropped by Old Actonians

“That picture is from 2013. Those boys are now my under 16 team and I was stood next to the person taking the snap. “Our match had to be delayed when all the players ran off the pitch to mob Becks. “We were about to start the second half when the whisper came round ‘it's Beckham’ and before I knew it they had run across the pitch to him.”

‘Acton old town – new town’ theme for Acton Carnival ACTON PARK With that ‘old vs new’ theme, it might have been an opportunity to reflect on a Carnival that started over 100 years ago but on Saturday the number one thing on revellers’ minds was having a good time. The jerk chicken, reggae music and party atmosphere at the Acton Carnival seemed to put everyone in a happy mood.
