Chasing Deer at Hanwell Hootie HANWELL W7 > The biggest event in Ealing in the month of May was of course the Hanwell Hootie music festival on May 6 – our cover pic shows popular local band Chasing Deer opening at the new Hootie venue, St Mellitus church. It was a big month for Chasing Deer as well, with the launch of their new EP, ‘Moving On’. (Click to view video from the launch) @ChasingDeerBand @HanwellHootie

What The_Ealinger did in May

n u ro

EALING W5 > Here’s a week-by-week overview of some of what ‘The_Ealinger’ (just a typical Ealing resident and homebased worker) got up to in May 2017.

Week 1: So yes, the first week of the month was concerned with making plans for and checking the various location line-ups for the Hanwell Hootie on Saturday 6 May. By the time Hootie headliners RSVP Bhangra came off the stage after 10pm in the Viaduct Meadow big tent, there had already been seven solid hours of music featuring no fewer than 85 musical acts in 14 venues. This had been the fifth annual Hanwell Hootie, and probably the best one so far for scale, attendance and music variety. Impressive work by organisers, volunteers, sponsors and performers. Well done Hanwell!

roundup

Week 2: #EalingHour on Twitter (every Tuesday 8-9pm) was interrupted on 9 May with the announcement that Ealing had a new mayor – congratulations to former deputy mayor, Cllr Simon Woodroofe. The Ealing mayor’s first official engagement after the swearing-in celebrations was the next day – the Ealing Chamber of Commerce annual Lunch Reception with the New Mayor of Ealing. The_Ealinger was happy to be able to attend this networking lunch at Monty’s

p u nd in Ealing Broadway, to find out about the mayor’s charities, the Log Cabin located in Northfields W13, and Age UK. On Saturday 13th, the Brentham May Day Parade took place in the streets of the Brentham Garden Estate conservation area in W5. The century-old tradition, one of only two long-standing such celebrations in London, features maypole dancing, a May Queen, and a parade with children from the Brentham and Pitshanger areas. Week 3: Live music lovers, including The_Ealinger, would have been looking forward to the 19th, as it was an afternoon of busking in the Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre, followed by the launch of local band Chasing Deer’s new EP, ‘Moving On’ at the Red Rooms (formerly The Ealing Club) – see video link on page 1. Week 4: Sadness and anger swept across the country, and over Ealing, after 23 concert-goers were killed by a terrorist bombing at the Manchester Arena on Monday 22. Flags flew at half-mast over the Ealing Town Hall as a mark of respect. The month ended as it began – with a bank holiday. And then it was June.

Ruby Sweeney & Matteo Turi

Ruby Sweeney and Matteo Turi are co-founders of T&S Finance Events (sponsors of the Ealing Business Expo). In this month’s Q&A they explain why Ealing businesses need more financial education.

Q&A

xplain a bit about your your individual businesses and how come you’re working together on T&S. T&S: We are both Ealing-based experts in our chosen fields – events and finance – working together to provide ‘Big services for small businesses’. We would like to use the experiences we’ve gained from working with big businesses, to help the Ealing economy by creating more successful local businesses. Matteo is a CFO expert in scale-up, acquisitions, exit, and international trading, and aims to fill the skills gap at the financial level. He speaks English, French, Italian and Spanish and is a qualified chartered accountant. Ruby is an events manager who is experienced in managing

conference and event projects from end to end. Ruby and her team work in line with their clients’ business/ marketing strategies to ensure that events complement their wider activities. Together we feel we can offer small businesses in Ealing a great opportunity to grow successfully. You’ll be launching T&S at the Ealing Business Expo and Networking Festival on 9 and 10 June. Will you

be “breaking a bottle” there? T&S: Indeed! We will be offering a glass of non-alcoholic bubbly to our stand visitors. We understand that many people will be driving, and will want to remain focused on the Expo – yet we want to let Ealing know that we’ve arrived with a bang! What happens next? Are you planning your first event already? Tell us what it will be like. T&S: We are working very closely with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and we

are taking charge of driving their events in the Borough of Ealing. We are passionate about the success of small businesses, and the first of our regular networking events will be on 19 June 2017 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel (more info in the Ealing Business Diary, page 6).
