So, what is West Ealing like? Its main claim to fame has to be as the fresh produce capital of Ealing: from the flower stall in Melbourne Avenue to the fruit and vegetable stands at the Cudi International Food Centre, and of course the Leeland Road Farmers Market, one of the longest-running in London. All the big supermarket chains have branches here too – Lidl, Morrisons, Tesco and Waitrose – selling even more food. With so much talk about town centre regeneration, and plans for a business improvement district, not to mention Crossrail coming soon, there’s a lot to look forward to in W13. ‘We all worked in the Wimpy’
G
onul Ali remembers coming over on the boat from Cyprus, aged just four, with her two siblings, mum and grandmother, to meet her father, Nail, who was already in the UK. Youngest brother Ali Nail was born last; he now owns nine businesses between Ealing and Ruislip, including the Hair and Beauty store on the corner of Uxbridge Road and Broomfield Road. “We moved into the Ealing area 43 years ago, when my dad bought the Wimpy bar across the road,” says Gonul, who also manages the Genesis hair salon next door to Hair and Beauty. “We all worked in the Wimpy – in those days there were no fast food outlets, so we always had queues of

people waiting to get in.” The Wimpy is now an estate agents, and the family has held on to a lot of property in the area. Gonul’s mum still lives in Gordon Road. “When we first moved to West Ealing, it was lovely,” Gonul recalls. “The green was there, the shops near Taste of Lahore were good, there was a little diner there... the legendary Rowse’s department store was opposite where Iceland is, then we had M&S, Woolworths... “I love going to Cudi. He’s open 24 hours – do you know why? It doesn’t make sense for him to put away all the produce every night. He has everything in there: butchers, bakers, deli, Polish shop, Turkish food, as well as the fresh produce.” So what does West Ealing need now? “It needs all these vacant shops to be filled,” says Gonul. “We have so many food places, discount stores and a lot of hairdressers. “If we want people coming here, we have to have more shops.”

With sporting attention turned to the winter Olympics at Sochi, Haven Lane-based expert Greg Bagley of W5 Physio doesn’t think we need to get over-worried about the physical danger Greg Bagley of some of the sports shown on tv. “These competitors practice long and hard,” says Greg, who previously worked as a specialist physio for British soldiers stationed in Germany. “You are more likely to hurt yourself cycling in London than competing in bobsleigh.” He is currently awaiting another major sporting event, the Commonwealth Games in June, where for two weeks he will be lead physio for the triathlon, to be held in Strathclyde Country Park, just outside Glasgow. While Greg is treating injuries in Scotland, his Ealing clients will be seen by colleagues.

To Paul Laidlaw, the food itself is the whole story: the start, the middle and the finish. Dishing up his signature curried goat from a busy kitchen at the Top Hill Caribbean English cuisine restaurant on West Drayton Road (across from West Ealing station), Paul explains that to run a food business, “you need to sleep with it and eat it”. “People like to come in and see you and make the connection,” he adds. Starting with the goat, which is sustainably sourced from The Goat Company farm in Northumberland. There’s no passing off sheep for goat in these parts. Paul Laidlaw: ‘Here for Top Hill can seat up to West Ealing commuters.’ 20, and Paul has plans to maximise the dine-in experience. “Business-people and families want somewhere to eat that’s warm and quiet.” In the middle of all this planning, Paul continues to cater for weddings and parties. West Ealing born and bred (his parents are Jamaican), he is proud of having cooked for Destiny’s Child and Bobby Robson during his days at the RAC Country Club in Epsom. The goat was excellent. Cafe Onik At the top of Drayton Green Road (where The Avenue joins with Argyle Road) stands a building labelled “Stowell’s Corner”. @ContactusEaling asked Twitter about it, and got some replies: @hiccup: It was a wine merchant called Stowells, many years ago. @BoddersNo2: Stowells & Sons was a wine merchant who set up his business in 1878. @BoddersNo2: They sold up to Whitbread in the 1920s for £20,000. @BoddersNo2:They went on to become Threshers. @BoddersNo2: Completely unrelated, Carry On Sargent was filmed almost entirely around there.
On the Uxbridge Road side of the Lido junction, there is an internet cafe called Salama. But beyond the mobile accessories counter where they do Western Union and Moneygram transfers, there is a charity called the Gargaar Somali Welfare Association. Dr Adam Hussen, a British-born Somalian gynaecologist, runs the centre, which offers help to job-seekers and new arrivals who are struggling with the English language barrier. “Most of the people we see here – over 100 a day – are on benefits,” says Dr Hussen. “They often need help filling out forms for the Home

came to London in 2004 to study fashion journalism, and settled in West Ealing when shops like Marks and Spencer and McDonald’s were still part of an attractive high street. He’s not sure the pound shops and betting chains are helping the area much: “When you sell luxury goods, you attract luxury customers,” he explains. “When you sell 99p products, well...” He is happy with his location opposite Dean Gardens: “Where we are, you can see us from all corners; that has to be good for business.”

Helping Ealing Council to recognise homebiz Just back from Ealing Council Scrutiny Panel (12 Feb) where I had been invited – by the Panel itself – to suggest ways the Council could support local home-based businesses. Accompanying me were Glenda Shawley and Shelley Henderson, local businesswomen with many years of homebiz experience. This meeting was a significant step towards increasing councillors’ awareness of the homebiz sector. Here are the main points we offered: (i) update Council website to feature smallbiz listings and/ or sources of funding and advice; (ii) launch ‘Ealing Means Business’ expo; and (iii) revamp the Ealing Business Partnership. The Office of National Statistics figures point to over 16,000 home-based businesses in the borough. We deserve to be taken seriously by our Council. Carlene Bender

Sarah Campus headed off to a business meeting in a Brentford cafe in January not quite knowing what to expect. When she heard that the prime minister, David Cameron, had also been invited, and was on his way too, she hurried to think up what they could talk about. So she talked to him about her cupcake business, Sprinkled Magic. “It was great to talk with him and he was really interested in how I am developing the business,” says Chiswick-based Sarah, who was one of four women entrepreneurs invited by local MP Mary Macleod. “The prime minister listened to us and offered guidance about where to get help to grow our businesses, about hiring our first employee, business rates, and having a mentor.”

Smells lovely “I love making perfume most of all,” says Yewande Rolph, known in the world of LinkedIn as a Crystal Reports consultant (i.e. IT services), but a familiar face to regular visitors to local fairs and craft markets, where she sells her sprays, creams, body rubs, and above all, perfumes. “In my humble opinion, Yewande: favourite my perfume scent – neroli (orange blossom) is better than big brands as I use natural aromatic plant extracts,” she says. In her Hanwell lab, she’s made over 30 scents, with names like ‘Agreeable’, ‘Acceptable’, and ‘Nasal Nourishment’.

Daniel Dzikowski, founder of IT support company Purple Lattice Solutions, explains how he managed this transition: “I worked at home for about three years at the start. Then in 2005 I decided to employ someone. Once I did, I looked for an office and moved my business away from home. Q: Did you always like working with wood? A: Yes. I gained my appreciation of the versatility of wood and cabinet-making when I took a job in an antiques shop 18 years ago. I have been working with and making furniture ever since.

Q: With your fine art degree, is this a kind of sculpture for you? A: Whether making a sculpture or a piece of furniture there is a process to be followed. The process of turning an idea into an object. My degree helped me to develop that creative process.

Maxine Brightman looks like a cat person. She also looks like a dog person. And a hamster person, fish person, even snake or stick insect person. Which comes in handy because if she’s house-sitting for you while looking after your pets, you need to know that she can cope with whatever the animals get up to while you’re away at work or on holiday. Maxine started Ealing Cat and Dog Visits last year because of experiences with her own pets: “I couldn’t take them to board or to a cattery, they would go ballistic,” she says. “I wanted someone
(reliable) to come to me.” She grabbed the gap in the market and is now building up the business. For her clients’ added peace of mind, she is also a qualified Animal Aider.
