At Tootega we love all things to do with the water, but more than anything we have a passion for paddle sports. When we’re not busy developing new products, you’ll most likely find us out in the waves at the beach, or going for a leisurely paddle along a local backwater.

We have a healthy respect for the roots of our sport and this is reflected in our brand name. The name Tootega comes from ancient Inuit mythology. Tootega was a wisened goddess who could walk on water, and was a protectorate of the Eskimo kayak fishing fleets.

Luckily for us our passions and our work are one and the same thing, and we’ve been fortunate enough to travel the world in search of both paddling adventures and design inspiration.

We’ve drawn on all our adventures and experience to bring you a range of products, which are easy to paddle, with features exactly where you need them. Never complacent, the Tootega range will continue to evolve, and to ensure your enjoyment lasts a lifetime all our kayaks are backed up by a lifetime guarantee.

the tootega difference... At Tootega we’ve always strived to do things differently, and we’re proud of it! From concept sketch to CAD design, mould tool engineering to product manufacture we do everything in-house here in Norfolk, United Kingdom. We do this because we care passionately about our products. Every kayak is carefully made and outfitted by hand, thoroughly checked at every stage of production, and extensively quality controlled by trusted staff prior to dispatch.

stainless steel bolts, screw through and into the brass fitting

welded stainless steel ‘D’ ring moulded into reinforced nylon

custom inserts Moulded inserts offer many benefits over drilling through the hull, and most good quality kayaks now use these corrosion resistant brass inserts to attach key components to their kayaks. For load bearing points such as handles or D-ring anchor points however, standard inserts can find their limitations in terms of strength. To counter this issue, whilst making the most of the massive advantages of waterproof inserts we have developed our own custom insert shape. These custom inserts are designed to spread the load behind the fitting point, ensuring the fixing point is as strong as the anchor itself.

extra large veins catch the plastic to create a super strong fitting

quality fittings To make the most of our custom inserts, we match them with quality fittings – simple! • All of our metal components are stainless steel for maximum strength and corrosion resistance. Metal rings are also welded to ensure maximum strength

• All of our load bearing plastic components are made of glass reinforced nylon,

4

and are either from our own tooling or sourced from reliable manufacturers, we also undertake spot destruction tests to ensure their integrity

• All of our graphics are UV stable and highly durable. Most are infused into the kayak plastic itself, ensuring they last as long as the boat itself.

all plastics are not equal That’s why at Tootega we are constantly researching and trailing new plastic formulas and production technologies to ensure we are using only the best possible materials. Our high density compounded polyethylene offers the best possible blend of stiffness, impact resistance, and UV stability we can find. Allowing us to make lighter boats, that perform better, and last longer.

engineered strength Using the best possible plastic is only the first part of the story, making the most of that plastic’s properties comes next. Simple shapes can have a huge impact on the end product. Some can act to help ‘trap’ plastic in certain areas of the kayak, building up thickness where needed. Some can add corrugation to a shape, aiding stiffness in high load areas. Finally some can act to isolate movement which can be useful if you want to put a sensitive feature in a high load area.

AN

LIFET

When finalising a design we carefully optimise these small details, adding stiffness and reducing weight wherever possible. As long as it doesn’t effect the boats paddling characteristics, our designers are free to explore changing it. We call this process, engineered strength.

A great example of all these benefits is the central hatch detailing on the Pulse series. The gully around the hatch was not only designed to drain away water, by optimising its shape and depth we have also used it to trap plastic and increase material thickness through the high wear seating area. In addition to increasing thickness it also maximises stiffness by creating corrugation. Finally the channel serves to minimise the transfer of flex within the seating area to the hatch lid itself, helping to minimise leakage through the hatch caused by twisting of the lid in it’s housing.

why its more than a boat... design For thousands of years kayaks have been lovingly crafted using natural materials such as wood and reeds. These natural materials offer an even fairing effect, bending progressively to make aesthetically pleasing lines, which more importantly guide water gently through their curves creating hull forms which are as efficient as they are graceful. This time honoured craftsmanship is beautiful, but time consuming and not always perfectly symmetrical and so over time boat builders have floated away from these traditional techniques and increasingly moved towards computer aided design. CAD offers quick development times, levels of unparalleled accuracy and the ability to model how the kayak will behave - both in the water and how the kayak will actually mould during production. These appealing attributes have led to CAD very much becoming the design method of choice for boat builders worldwide, but all the convenience and accuracy comes at a cost. This cost isn’t financial, but at the loss of the smooth fairing, and graceful lines that traditional methods give. CAD is simply not capable of blending and fairing lines in the same way a simple baton of wood can.

At Tootega our answer is to combine the best of both worlds. Our design team start any new design with a sketch pad, talking through key concepts and create an artists impression of the finished product. From these key sketches and the associated calculations of drag, centre of effort, balance, and volume distribution we then draw a full 1:1 scale model of the design on paper rolls. During the drawing of this 1:1 model we fair all major lines with wooden batons, much the same way as our inuit counterparts would have 1000’s of years ago. These graceful lines are then scanned at full size and imported into CAD, where we use them to build highly accurate 3D models of the finished kayak.

22

This fusion of techniques allows us to develop designs with the speed, efficiency, and accuracy of CAD modelling whilst still retaining all the benefits of traditional methods, and is a system that we are rightly proud of.

making a tool The next part of the process includes more than one trade secret that we’re not allowed to divulge, but essentially we use CNC machines to generate any prototypes that we wish to trial, and once we’re happy with the result we develop the mould tooling for the production process. The tooling is made from cast aluminium. The aluminium is cast in chemically bonded sand from mould tool patterns made using a mixture of CNC machining and more traditional methods. The raw castings are then matched, cleaned, and polished in-house by our engineering team. We’ve tried every trick in the book to speed this process up, but in the end a great tool comes down to patience, and lots of hand sanding. Some larger, more complex tools can take in excess of 500 hours to finish.

beginning production When the engineering team are close to a finished tool we usually test it to find any hidden gremlins, and only once we are totally satisfied do we produce a short run of pre-production samples. These samples are rigorously tested, both in-house and externally to ensure everything meets our expectations, and only once completely satisfied do we commit to beginning full production. Full production begins with extensive staff training. Our production and outfitting teams work together with the designers and engineers to ensure everyone has a complete understanding of the product and any unique features it may have. Only when everyone is completely satisfied will production be signed off, and Tootega logos be added to the mould – at this point the new design is now a Tootega product.

“we set out to achieve a totally modern manufacturing facility that works hand in hand with traditional methods and techniques”

Steve Childs - Director

a guide to our hull types p planing ‘c’

Our most stable hull form. Also happens to be the liveliest! Our carefully designed double concave hull provides class leading amounts of initial and secondary stability, boosting confidence from your very first trip.

The wide point of the plan shape and low point of the rocker are close to the paddlers hips, giving a responsive, balanced, and natural feel to the kayak. Additional volume at the rail boosts stability yet further, whilst improving handling in rough water.

The keel and channeling have been designed to aid tracking during flat water paddling, but to break free whilst planing in the surf, ensuring a lively and maneuverable feel.

h hybrid ‘c’

The best of both worlds? Quite possibly! Our hybrid hull blends the best of our surf inspired planing ‘c’ hull with features designed to make every paddle stroke more efficient and to improve tracking, even in choppy or windy conditions. The concave depth has been reduced, and camber increased to give more rail to rail response and to reduce flat water drag, whilst still retaining great levels of stability.

t

touring ‘c’

A graceful, exceptionally stable, and extremely seaworthy platform. The concave section of the hull has been reduced to the central third and has been progressively spiralled out into a vee-keeled hull form at the bow and stern, providing a graceful and seaworthy platform.

The bow and stern have been sharpened, and a more defined keel line added to increase tracking ability and to smoothly guide water through the central section of the hull improving the kayak’s glide. Continual rocker through the entire hull length provides a smooth and responsive paddling experience, reduces hull ‘slap’ in choppy conditions, and boosts turning ability, whilst improving handling in rough water.

Rail to rail camber has been increased even further from the Hybrid ‘C’ hull to aid turn initiation and soften the transition from the distinct vee-keeled sections, making it the most efficient concave hull form we make. Continual rocker throughout the entire hull length and keel line keep these longer hull forms from becoming stiff, and when combined with the boosted volume at the rail ensure maximum seaworthiness for those adventures you haven’t thought of yet.

Tootega kayaks was born out of a passion for being in the water, regardless of where or how! That’s why we decided to support a charity close to our hearts. Surfer’s Against Sewage are a dedicated charity who campaign for a cleaner safer beach environment. We launched our special edition global colour-way, and for every kayak we sell we donate £5 to the charity. Designed to look like the earth from above the distinct colour option is available in any kayak in the pulse range at no extra cost. It’s our way of giving a little back to the environment we love so much. Please visit www.sas.org.uk to see their good work?
