y family was one of the oldest to settle Fannin County. There is a book, two mountains and a creek named after them. Being raised in the area and coming from a family that settled this area in the early 1800s, I grew up riding my horse into the beautiful trails of Cashes Valley. I grew up in real estate as my dad sold a lot of mountain property. I also grew up around the construction business so I have a good working knowledge of the cabins that are built locally. I consider mountain property and cabins to be my specialty. I am the founder of a very successful local business, Adventure Trail Rides, that helps folks enjoy the beauty of the mountains like I did growing up. THIS IS MY TOWN! Everyone needs good news and the Blue Ridge area is booming despite the economy. The area has long been known for its fishing, golf, horseback riding and the train ride through the mountains. New shops are continuing to open, restaurants are continuing to thrive, and the way of life is continuing at its peaceful, joyful pace. ne of the most recognizable aspects of Blue Ridge is the famous Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. The train, made up of vintage passenger cars pulled by two modern By Dub Joiner The News diesel Observer engines, can carry 500 or more passengers on a 26-mile round trip excursion through the mountains to McCaysville/ Copperhill on the Georgia and Tennessee state line. While the train operates from March through December, some of the more popular trips are the fall foliage excursions in October

that bring thousands of visitors to Fannin County. The fall foliage train trips are available twice daily and weekends during October. The three-and-a-half hour trip is 26 miles round trip, with a layover in McCaysville/ Copperhill for passengers to explore the shops and restaurants in those two communities on the Georgia/Tennessee state line. Trails provide local outdoor adventures

T

he fall is an excellent time to hike one or more of the many trails found throughout north Georgia, including the Benton MacKaye Trail and Appalachian Trail that cross Fannin County. The Benton MacKaye Trail, a footpath of nearly 300 miles through the Appalachian Mountains, has its southern terminus near Cherry Log. It runs from Springer Mountain o n t he Fannin-Gilmer county line to Davenport Gap on the northern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Benton MacKaye expert Ralph Heller said the trail passes through some of the most remote back country in north Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina, including eight federally designated wilderness and wilderness study areas. There are numerous access points and trailheads along the BMT, which can create many

one-way and loop hikes on the BMT, as well as in combination with other local trails. Heller said several hikes are planned in October and November, and visitors are welcome to participate. He said a hike is planned to Blood Mountain and possibly another to Brush Creek at the Ocoee Whitewater Center. In addition, Heller said there are hikes planned on various trails on Oct. 17, 18 and 19 near the BMT’s annual meeting at Coker Creek. The Benton MacKaye Trail also intersects the Appalachian Trail at several points, creating several additional hiking loops. The AT also originates on Springer Mountain. Access points to the BMT include Wilscot Gap on Hwy. 60, Dial Road crossing and Shallowford Bridge on Aska Road in Fannin County, and

The Appalachian Trail ranges from 2,500 feet to more than 4,400 feet in elevation over the 75 miles the trail covers in Georgia’s Chattahoochee National Forest, some of which is in Fannin County. September and October are some of the best times to hike the AT because of the cool weather and color of the foliage, according to the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, which manages the trail through an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service. The trail offers unlimited hiking adventure and challenge, with ascents and descents that

» THE MOVING OF LILLA BARTON April 9 – 26 BY JOHN MACNICHOLAS » DRAMATIC COMEDY The humorous and touching tale of a southern Alabama town’s ethical, spiritual and political dilemma over how to get the Widow Lilla Barton to move out of the parsonage her father built for she and her Reverend husband. An evening of great laughs and drama.

» BREAKFAST WITH LES & BESS May 14 – 31 BY LEE KALCHAIM » COMEDY Les and Bess are a married couple who co-host a radio talk show in New York City before the turmoil of the sixties stirred the country out of its complacency. Les and Bess are about to have their talk show canceled because of lack of interest. Since their marriage is based on their show, they may have to cancel their marriage as well. Will Les and Bess stay together? Stay tuned...

» RADIO TBS (Trailer Broadcasting Scandals) July 9 – 26 FUNDRAISING EVENT Reader’s Theater: LOVE, LOSS & WHAT I WORE SEPT 24, 25, 26, 27:

(Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday) BY NORA AND DELIA EPHRON » COMEDY A play of monologues and ensemble pieces about women, clothes and memory covering all the important subjects—mothers, prom dresses, mothers, buying bras, mothers, hating purses and why we only wear black. Based on the bestselling book by Ilene Beckerman. Reader’s Theatre is a style in which the actors do or do not memorize their lines but use vocal expression to help the audience understand the story rather than visual storytelling.

BY MARK LANDON-SMITH » COMEDY Radio hostesses and society doyennes Vesta Poteet and Dixie Mandrell bring to you the comings and goings of The Luna Del Mar Manufactured Home Oasis and Monkey Empire, and what a jumpin’ place this trailer park is.

» A NIGHT AT THE THEATER August 20 – September 6 BY LAWRENCE CASLER » COMEDY Margaret and Stanley Locker and their friends, Donna and Walter Pace, are at the theatre for their weekly dose of culture. This week’s ordeal is Hamlet. Secrets emerge and friendships unravel amid the audiences’ laughter.

» STEEL MAGNOLIAS October 1 – 18 BY ROBERT HARLING » DRAMATIC COMEDY Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions. The sudden realization of their mortality, when tragedy hits draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.
