Photography trends toward rural, vintage elements

style I

f you’re getting married in the South, boots, lace and burlap along with a nod to the past are some of the hottest trends wedding photographers are

seeing. “Cowboy boots and burlap is where it’s at,” Dawsonville photographer Paige Sweany said. “I think traditional pictures are going out the window.” Sweany, who operates the photography business Sole Photography, has shot more than 200 weddings in the past six years. “I haven’t done a church wedding in a long time,” she said. Sweany said lots of her clients are embracing non-traditional venues such as barns and stables. Valerie Fowler, who was married in September 2014, wanted to be sure her guests were comfortable. So when she hired Sweany as a photographer she asked her to bring a vintage couch along with her. “It was nice,” Fowler said. “I think people were more relaxed and posed differently when they had a couch to sit on.” Fowler said she recommends brides find a unique element important to them to incorporate into photographs on the big day. “Because I think you’ll

look at those pictures and really appreciate it,” she said. Photographer Sheri Johnson, who has photographed several engagements and weddings throughout Dawson County including the Lakeview Center and Crystal Falls, agreed with Sweany regarding farm weddings. “I would say the biggest things I’ve seen in the past two years are lots of people are going more casual,” Johnson said. “The barn or farm wedding is definitely something people are excited about. I guess because girls love to wear their cowboy boots." Johnson also mentioned she is seeing more brides choose to incorporate retro or antique elements into their wedding decor and photographs. “Pinterest has helped a lot of people come up with ideas,” she said. Viki Sears of Life’s Art photography in Dawsonville said she enjoys seeing brides reflect their own personalities in the wedding. “I love to see their individual personalities come out,” she said. “Every wedding is unique, even when you shoot a lot of different ones.” Trends Sears has noticed are bridesmaids not sticking to the tradition of wearing the exact same dress. She’s also noticed a lot more do-it-yourself approaches in weddings. “I had a bride who went around to different flea markets to collect all her own china,” she said. The

10 Northeast Georgia Bridal 2015

china was used at the reception for the dinner. Jeff Gulle, a commercial photography instructor at North Georgia Technical College in Clarkesville said they are teaching their students to look for spontaneous moments and to photograph a wedding through a photojournalist perspective combined with traditional shots. “You still have to cover both ends of the spectrum and do standard photos of the bride and groom in front of the altar in addition to this photojournalistic approach,” Gulle said. When choosing a wedding photographer, the professionals agree the bride should interview them to make sure they are a good fit. “The photographer will be with you all day long so the most important thing is that they are someone that can complement the day,” Sears said. Gulle, who was a wedding photographer before he became an instructor, recommends checking to see if the photographer is a member of any professional organizations. He also says a good photographer should be willing to give names of previous brides to contact for recommendations. “I would always give brides the last three or five weddings I did so they could speak to those brides,” he said. — Melissa Mayton

Getting hitched among the vines in Dahlonega W

hen Jennifer Allen and Jason Mays were searching for the perfect venue for their wedding, they knew they found the right place in Dahlonega the moment they saw it. The couple decided to celebrate their special day among the vines at Wolf Mountain Vineyards in May 2014. “We knew it was Wolf Mountain the moment we pulled over the hill and saw that view,” Jason said. About 100 of their closest family and friends shared the moment with the couple as they said their “I Do’s” “We loved the idea of a small ceremony,” Jennifer said. But the couple also had a desire to share the moment with those closest to them. “We happen to have a lot of people close to us so the list grew and grew,” she added.

THE PERFECT PLAN The bride and groom teamed up to plan the wedding, but Jason knew when it was appropriate to give in to Jennifer’s preferences. “Technically, we both planned the wedding,” Jason said. “But that pretty much meant she had an idea and I said ‘Yes, Babe, that’s genius.’” When it came to collecting ideas for the wedding, Jennifer did just what any enterprising bride-to-be would do these days – log on to Pinterest, a website and mobile app that includes creative ideas and photos for just about any hobby. They were both busy with work and surprisingly calm about the planning, according to Jason. “So we actually forgot to even do some things.” “With all of the rush leading up to the wedding,” Jason said, “we completely forgot to get wedding bands.” So just hours before the ceremony,

Jennifer said when it came time for a smooth ceremony, the folks at the winery were so organized and relaxed that it even rubbed off on her, which she was thankful for. “We didn’t have to worry about a thing,” Jennifer said. “Lindsey [Smith] and the whole family were great and had every detail perfectly planned, so we were able to relax and really soak in the moment.” STARTING A LIFE TOGETHER The couple lives in Columbus and manages an apartment community together. “It’s definitely interesting and challenging working together and I don’t think that’s an easy dynamic for most couples,” Jennifer said. “But I love that we get to share our good days and our bad days with each other.” In order to show their appreciation, some

of the residents got together and made handcrafted thank you cards for the wedding. “They even made a collage of pictures from the reception, which was so meaningful to us,” Jennifer said. The couple has been together pretty much since the day they met five years ago, Jason said. Even though they are in Columbus, they are big fans of Dahlonega, especially in the fall. “The people here are great, too, and we’ve talked a lot about living in Dahlonega one day,” he said. The best part of marriage, Jennifer said, has been throwing the old-school model out the window. “We’re both very independent,” she said, “So he knows how to make lasagna and I know how to fix the water heater (kind of).” “It’s nice because we each have strengths that may not fit traditional roles, but they fit us perfectly,” Jennifer said. —John Bynum

Tallulah Falls couple celebrate union on the beach

F

rom office romance to deployment, Amanda and Dustin Rogers of Tallulah Falls had a long road to their destination wedding. The couple met at Tallulah Falls School, where they are both employed. Dustin is a staff sergeant in the Army National Guard and assistant dean of students at TFS. The two became friends and started dating in 2011. Their relationship was put to the test in May 2013, when Dustin was deployed to Afghanistan for nine months. The couple stayed connected through phone calls, emails and Skype, eventually discussing the possibility of a wedding when the deployment was over. “You really realize when you’re apart for that long what the other person means to you,” Amanda said. “It gives you a different perspective on what to value in life. It was tough not knowing what was going on over there and what was going to happen to him. Thankfully, we had this marriage to look forward to and just get our minds in a different place than him being in danger all the time.” Dustin returned home on Valentine’s Day 2014 and there was only one place he wanted to go — the beach. He proposed at his home shortly after Amanda and Dustin Rogers after returning, prompting the pair to throw around Dustin returned from his deployment ideas about wedding locations. They decided on to Afghanistan in February 2014. a ceremony at Pensacola Beach, Florida, where Dustin’s Rabun County High School classmate and friend Jason Perry, and his wife, Mary Carol, lived. The Rogers were wed March 29, 2014. Unlike many couples, the Rogers had a small ceremony, with only the minister and their two friends present. “Neither one of us wanted to do a large wedding or really plan much of anything,” Amanda said. She added that the wedding was very laid back, with the couple not knowing exactly what spot on the beach they would have the ceremony until it actually happened. Dustin picked out a spot in front of a beached boat and the two exchanged vows right before sunset. “It was nice and breezy. The beach where we were at was deserted because it was cooler,”

Dustin said. “You had it to yourself, just the beauty of it. [There were] nice white sands and everything.” After the wedding, the couple met up with Dustin’s commander from Afghanistan, Luis Mendez, and his fiancée at the Grand Marlin for dinner. “We just focused on us that day,” Amanda said. “It was more intimate.” The duo kept with their beach theme on the honeymoon, spending time at a resort in Cancun, Mexico. The newlyweds now live in a campus house at Tallulah Falls School, where Amanda is director of enrollment services. She said they both seek to be role models to students. Bre asked her attendants to simply choose a navy dress they liked, with the only stipulation that it be above the knee. “They each have different personalities and body shapes,” she said. “Surprisingly, they all matched really well.” She chose a form-fitting lace and chiffon mermaid-style wedding dress. The only “theme” was tradition. Bre said a lot of the wedding details were do-it-yourself. Mitch’s brother, Mark, and his fiancée, Hannah, made cornhole boards for the children to play with at the wedding. Each was painted with a bright “B” in the center. A wooden “B” adorned the mantle of the large fireplace at Cenita Vineyard’s reception hall. Bre had a custom stamp made that said B+M, then attached a tag with the stamp to the napkins rolled around dinnerware and wrapped in twine. couple whose lives revolve around arts and entertainment decided to do something over the top when they left their wedding at Peach Brandy Cottage in Dawsonville. They left in the bat mobile – not "a" bat mobile – but "the" bat mobile. “We both love comic books and comic book movies,” Amanda said. “And he’s a big Batman fan, so one night when we were talking about leaving the wedding, he said, ‘I’m going to get us the bat mobile!’ And, when he says he going to do something, he does it.” And, for the couple who readily admit normal is boring, it was the perfect idea. “My husband does magic for a living and he books entertainment with specialty items,” Amanda said. “And, I’m the director for the Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville. We’re really creative people, and we’re a little weird.” Jeff, Amanda’s husband, apparently has lots of connections in the entertainment business – a connection that landed him one of the coolest, and most recognized cars in television history. Batman was a popular television show in the late 1960s and was based on the comic book character of the same name. It starred Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin – two crime-fighting superheroes who defend Gotham City. “I have to tell you, the bat mobile is so fast, I was scared to death,” Amanda said. “It makes a very loud va-room!" Amanda said they only had one problem with the bat mobile. “Once the car showed up, it just killed the party – everybody wanted to go see it,” she said. The couple was also attracted

to the history behind the Peach Brandy Cottage in downtown Dawsonville. “We’d heard it was an old moonshine house and had a secret room with a fake wall,” she said. “We liked that and we also liked the big party barn.” The couple meet in 2005 on Match.com. “I just kind of wanted to flirt but Jeff was like, ‘here’s my number, call me,’” she said. “He wasn’t going to wait. He wanted to cut right to the chase.” Once the couple started dating, weird and wonderful things started happening. “After just a few dates, we started finishing each other’s sentences,” Amanda said. “And we laughed a lot.” Jeff chose a somewhat traditional method of proposing to his bride. He found his old letterman’s jacket. “I teased him about that because I didn’t know you could letter in theatre,” she said with a laugh. “He wanted me to put it on so I did.” Little did Amanda know her ring was inside one of the pockets. “I was standing there just babbling on about something, waving my hands around, and Jeff finally said, ‘Put your hands in the pockets.’ And, there it was. I was so surprised and excited.” Amanda and Jeff were married Oct. 3, 2010. And recently they became parents of a baby boy. “We agreed on the name Maximilian Ringo McClure,” Amanda said. “But, my first choice for a name was ‘Elvis.’” The couple’s wedding was photographed by Fox Gradin at Celestial Studios in Gainesville. “She’s another oddball,” Amanda said, “but we love her work.” — Kimberly Boim

earth To the ends of the L

ove knows no bounds. It does not accept limitations and can overcome the odds. From Habersham County to Australia, the love shared by Amanda Haley (Anderson) and Zane Kent Stewart withstood the test of time – and distance. It was 2005 when she caught his eye in a hallway at Habersham Central High School. At the time, Amanda, now 27, was a freshman and Zane, now 28, a sophomore. “I was sitting in the hallway with a mutual friend of mine and Amanda’s,” Zane said. “Amanda was walking down the hall and I said, ‘Golly, who’s that?’” From there, Zane asked for her number which led to a first date – and the rest was history. “But we actually went to daycare together and didn’t know it,” Zane said with a laugh. It didn’t take long before Amanda and Zane became a couple, and their crushes blossomed into a summer romance. However, graduation steered Zane to study at Gupton-Jones School of Funeral Services in Atlanta, while Amanda enrolled at Piedmont College. Although they began dating other people, Zane said he and Amanda remained close friends.

The bride and groom, who love to travel, provided a miniature globe for guests to sign happy wishes to the couple during the reception.

The bride and groom departed the reception through a procession of lit sparklers held by weddings guests.

“Amanda and I, even dating other people, I don’t think we’ve ever gone but a month or two without talking,” he said. And when Zane and Amanda graduated from college in 2006 and 2008, respectively, the opportunity arose for them to reconnect, and they picked up where they left off in November 2009. “I begged her to get back together," Zane said. “I remember him just saying, ‘Let’s do it again,’ but I was hesitant,” Amanda said, not wanting to risk losing their friendship on the chance it didn’t work out. But at the annual Macy’s Great Tree Lighting in Atlanta, a tradition for the two friends, Amanda agreed to take that second leap. “I said, ‘All right, are we doing this?’” Zane said. “And she said, ‘Well you’ve been awfully sweet lately, so I think we can try this again.’” However, although bound by hearts, a nannying job swept Amanda to Australia for six-and-a-half months in December 2010. “It was extremely hard,” Amanda said, being away from home and loved ones. But Zane wasn’t far behind, temporarily moving across the globe to join

Amanda in March 2011. “I chased her,” he said, unable to stand even the thought of being apart. “Amanda’s the type of girl you can take in any situation and have a great time. So, I just didn’t want another dude to snatch her up knowing how much fun and sweet she is,” he said. And for three months, the couple grew even more in love. “We were shoulder-to-shoulder for three months,” she said. “It was so much fun.” And just like that – they knew. “We always had the bond I knew would work in a marriage,” Zane said. And not soon enough, Zane proposed to his high school and college sweetheart Jan. 6, 2014. They were married on Aug. 23, 2014. “I didn’t want to do a winter wedding,” Amanda said. “We’re both outdoorsy people and we didn’t want to wait another year and a half to get married.” The couple tied the knot before 275 friends and relatives at Legacy Pointe at Lake Lanier Islands Resort in Buford. The theme? “Modern, classy elegance,” Amanda said. The affair was picture perfect and

showcased the couple’s personalities and interests. From the venue, to the “ring security (bearers),” to a miniature globe for guests to sign, their day was all their own. After a day on Cloud Nine, the couple honeymooned for 15 days in South Africa. “People don’t see Africa being romantic, but it was,” she said. Since then, the Stewarts agree marriage is everything they had hoped for and more. “It’s great,” Amanda said. “It’s nice to get to be with your best friend every day.” “It’s easy when you’re best friends,” Zane added. Down the road, the Stewarts see themselves as happy as ever – maybe with a baby Stewart on the way. Amanda is the daughter of Clete Anderson and Pam Owen of Alto. Zane is the son of Kent Stewart of Flowery Branch and Robbie Cook of Alto. Amanda is the marketing director at Chick-fil-A in Cornelia, while Zane works as a manager at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, also in Cornelia. The couple currently resides in Cornelia. — Christina Santee

L

awton Place Manor in Mt. Airy is an authentic 19th-century southern home, offering a new wedding venue in Habersham County. To add to its historic charm, in the 1950s, baseball legend Ty Cobb lived in the home after his retirement. Christy Medley owns the house with her husband, Joshua. According to information on lawtonplacemanor.com, Lawton Place Manor was built in about 1875 by Gen. Alexander Lawton of Savannah. In its day, the home was considered a summer retreat for the wealthy. Known as Seventh Heaven House in 2009, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home has eight fireplaces, original heart pine flooring, and original plastered walls. The property also offers a guest house with hardwood floors

and an original claw foot bathtub. The Medleys purchased the house in March 2013, so Christy Medley could fulfill her childhood dream to own a home to provide brides “the wedding they desire on a budget.” Though they are fairly new to Northeast Georgia, the Medleys have more than 10 years’ experience in planning weddings and other events. Christy Medley said, so far, most of the weddings held at Lawton Place Manor have been “casual, country chic,” but, “no two weddings are ever the same, which is what I like. There are lots of different options. Nothing is cookiecutter.” The Medleys live in the home with their children, Skye, Brayden and Noi. When the house is rented for a wedding, the wedding party has use of the entire downstairs, which includes a bridal suite for the bride’s party to dress, bathrooms, access to the kitchen, and a great room with fireplace. There is a guesthouse on the property, which includes a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom with original claw foot tub, for the groom’s party to dress. Outside is a newly-completed fireplace built with fieldstone found in the yard as the property was being cleared and groomed, Christy said. The property also has a pool done in a rustic style, so weddings or events can be held poolside. With lights strung through the trees, she said, “It’s really pretty and very romantic.” In addition to weddings, the house is available for bridal and baby showers, “or any event people want to use it for,” she said. Hardman Farm is perfect natural setting

ndy Slack used his skills as a landscape architect when he planned a memorable way to ask Elizabeth Schroth to marry him. Andy picked her up one night for a dinner in Helen. He asked where she wanted to go, and she said he could choose since she didn’t want to make any decisions that night. “I had been working to put together a friend’s shower that day,” she said. “I was tired, and sick with a cold.” He said he wanted to stop off at a “secret garden” because he had been doing some work on it. A little foggy from the cold medicine she had taken, she just mumbled “whatever.” It was a couple of acres of gardens, and they walked through to a boxwood maze. She began to notice flowers scattered on the ground, and then he ran ahead. When she asked what he was doing, he told her to follow the flowers. She did and they led her to a gazebo, where Andy was down on one knee. They set out to make their wedding unique. They chose the Hardman Farm property as a venue. Since it was an outdoor-only venue, they rented a tent for food and set chairs and an arch up on the old Unicoi Turnpike, which runs through the property. It is now just a path, shaded on both sides by walnut trees. The couple asked guests to bring a favorite covered dish, as well as the recipe to create a cookbook of friends’ recipes. They served popcorn and champagne before the wedding, and set up a dance floor in the grass. They hung lights in the trees and put candles in the 100-year-old outdoor fountain. It rained up until an hour or so before the wedding when, just like magic, the sun came out. The wedding went on exactly as planned. — Linda Erbele

The historic Hardman Farm setting and perfect weather created a magical event for Andy and Elizabeth Slack’s wedding.

38 Northeast Georgia Bridal 2015

The wedding of Emily Carter and Jimbo McGahee of Cornelia on April 5, 2014, was a sweet occasion, made sweeter by the fact it was held at the Community House in Cornelia. Emily is the daughter of Virginia Carter of Clarkesville and the late Harry Carter. Jimbo is the son of Jim and Jeanne McGahee of Cornelia. Harry Carter worked for the city of Cornelia from 1985 until he retired in January 2007, with the later years serving as assistant city manager and city manager. He was largely responsible for renovating the Community House. According to city records, the Community House was built in 1936 as a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) project. The Cornelia City Commission approved the renovation in 1997, and the project began in 1998. Work completed during the $836,000 project included updating plumbing and electrical, flooring, bathrooms, kitchen, making the second floor usable, and installing an elevator and other American with Disabilities Act (ADA) enhancements. Accessibility was important to Harry Carter because he was in a wheelchair himself, Virginia Carter, said. Harry Carter died in 2008 from the muscle disease myositis. “He was very interested in getting an elevator, and making it easy for people who were handicapped to access the facility,” Carter said. “He also got an elevator put in the fire department so he and others could go to the city meetings.” One of the reasons Emily and Jimbo chose the Community House was her father’s love of the old building, Emily said. She highly recommends the Community House for its versatility and affordability as a wedding venue. “I love the rustic look it has,” she said. “It’s so affordable and that helps. It’s very versatile, and could go for a casual wedding or super-formal wedding.” The Carter-McGahee wedding, with 200-250 attending, was “pretty casual,” Emily said. Groomsmen wore navy pants, white button-up shirts and suspenders. Jimbo wore a navy blue suit. Emily and Jimbo each had seven attendants.

n

Bridesmaids Noelle Castleberry, Ashley Williams, Meg Luke, Valinda Carter, Jennifer Pettigrew, Audrey Kim and Charlotte King. Shown with groom Jimbo McGahee. Emily said the wedding ceremony was outside in front of the fountain, with the buffet reception held inside the Community House. “We had a lot of pictures in the foyer, where we had our cake, pictures of ourselves and our parents,” Emily said. “For our unity [ceremony], Jimbo’s parents bought us a Japanese maple tree, and we watered it together.” “My dad would have loved it,” she said of her wedding. Having Emily and Jimbo’s wedding at the Community House was “very special,” Virginia Carter said. “It’s just like [Harry Carter] was there,” she said. “It was a beautiful day in April and there was so much space, we could open the doors.” Carter, who was out of town with another daughter, Valinda, helping with a difficult pregnancy, was unable to help plan Emily’s wedding. She gives kudos to Jeanne McGahee, Jimbo’s mother, for taking charge of the planning.

“It was the most wonderful thing,” Virginia Carter said. “They handled the wedding and I was just the mother of the bride. Usually the burden falls on the [bride’s] mother, but they went in swinging.” Since family members from California, Texas, Rhode Island,

Alabama and Florida were able to attend, “We had a huge reunion,” Carter said. “It was really wonderful.” For information about scheduling the Community House, call Cornelia City Hall at 706-778-8585. — Kimberly Brown 2015 Northeast Georgia Bridal
