LAST DECEMBER, my dear friends G and Bridget Brown and Kate Glassner Brainerd took my wife Jo Anne and I out for my sixtieth birthday dinner. Kate, who’d flown in from Atlanta, was Colorado AvidGolfer‘s first art director 20 years ago, and whenever she’s in town, I always give her the latest copy of the magazine She pointed to the logo on the cover. “I’m so glad this has survived all these years,” she said with a proud smile. I hated to break the news to her. The Caslon Book typeface logo that had withstood the creative impulses of her seven successors in the job—and had appeared on 175 issues, our website and thousands of business cards, posters and marketing collateral—would be replaced as of our 20th Anniversary issue. Don’t shed any tears: Caslon, in numerous permutations, has endured 300 years and is easy to find in bookstores and magazine racks around the world. Its replacement, Noto Sans, only dates back a few years, making it a more contemporary-looking, progressive font. Our art director, Michelle M. Gutierrez, with the benediction of Creative Director Jani Duncan Smith, implemented it in a way that modernizes the look of the magazine without redefining the publication. As you see on this page and the ones that follow it, she carried the modernization throughout the publication. It’s as if we’ve given our 20-year-old a new wardrobe for a birthday present. And 20 is a significant birthday. Print publications are a dying breed. The rise of digital publishing and social media combined with the expense of ink, paper, printing and distribution have made the economics involved with creating a bound publication incredibly challenging. Factor in the myriad media options that advertisers must now consider, and you can appreciate the amazing job the business and sales team led by Allen Walters and Chris Phillips has done to ensure our survival over the last two decades. For that, I’m very proud. I’ve been at its editorial helm for 19 of those 20 years, passing the torch

in early 2020 before receiving it again a year later. During that time, Colorado AvidGolfer has helped chronicle Colorado golf and those who play it. See page 93 for a selective, numerical highlight reel. This issue isn’t just a retrospective. In the last 20 years we’ve seen golf evolve into a far more athletic, technology and analytics-driven sport than “the game of golf” by which people—perhaps through alliterative habit—refer to it. In the process, however, golf has also become far more democratic than ever. Technology not only powers infinite swing analytics; it also powers Topgolf and the countless simulated indoor golf experiences to which Millennials and the Gen-Z are flocking. Their modern, less formal approach is challenging many traditions of the sport (or game, if you must), as Contributor Andy Bigford observes in “New-School Golf” (Page 98). Andy saliently analogizes it to the shift that the ski industry had to make when snowboarders arrived. Unlike overhauling the type of a logo or a magazine’s design, changes in the culture of something considered “The Royal & Ancient Game” portend some compelling storylines. So, looking ahead to golf’s next 20 years, will Colorado golf embrace change or tell it to get off its finely manicured lawns? I can’t wait to find out. Thanks, as always, for being a reader!

his year, junior golfers will have more options to play and compete at an affordable level across the state. On February 25th, the Colorado Golf Association launched a new CGA Junior Membership for $25. With CGA Junior Membership, kids enjoy the same technology available to adults through the WHS Handicap Index and GHIN Mobile app, which includes course maps and score-posting ability. Even better, this membership connects juniors to a nationwide collection of courses through Youth on Course, a national program that allows them to play for $5 a round—and at some Colorado courses, for as little as $2 per round. More than 35

courses in Colorado have joined the Youth on Course network, and the CGA has invited even more to participate. After six successful years, the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado saw significant growth in membership and demand for playing opportunities. To meet the needs of all junior golfers in Colorado in 2022 and beyond, the Colorado Golf Association (CGA) and Colorado Section of the PGA (CPGA), announced plans to serve junior golfers independently beginning in 2022. Both organizations will refine their foci and tailor programs to the specific needs of juniors within their respective organizations. For juniors who love to compete, the CPGA will offer a schedule of golf tournaments for kids at various skill levels. Under

the Youth Pillar of the Colorado PGA REACH Foundation, the CPGA will continue to support national initiatives including Drive, Chip & Putt in conjunction with Augusta National Golf Club, and PGA Jr. League, which provides beginning golfers with a fun, team-oriented on-ramp to the game. The CPGA will continue to host prestigious Colorado Junior PGA Championship and bring back the Aurora Junior Championship. “The Colorado PGA will remain committed to supporting junior golfers and their families through a combination of existing and new junior golf programs,” Interim Colorado PGA Executive Director Bob Doyle explains. “Continuing to support core development initiatives while creating a brand-new competitive offering is some-

Equal Pay for Equal Play

n the 22nd day of Women’s History Month, the Colorado Women’s Open made some history of its own. At a press event to introduce Inspirato— the Denver-based luxury travel subscription brand—as the new title sponsor of the threeevent Colorado Open Championships, the Colorado Open Golf Foundation announced that starting this year the Inspirato Colorado Women’s Open and the Inspirato Colorado Open would have identical $250,000 purses. Each of the winners will receive $100,000. This makes Colorado Open Championships the first state golf tournaments in the country to have equal payouts for both its men’s and women’s events. “And, we believe, it’s the first professional golf tournament in the world with equal purses,” said Inspirato Executive Vice President Michele Delman, one of the 550 women who comprise 70 percent of Inspirato’s global workforce. “I couldn’t be more proud to be part of a company that made this a reality.” “We don’t just have a lot of female employees; we have a lot of female executives and female leaders,” Inspirato Co-founder and CEO Brent Handler said. “We felt like it was a good brand fit for us, and it felt like the right thing to do.”

Doing the right thing will cost Inspirato $2 million over the course of a five-year sponsorship originally priced at $1.5 million. During negotiations, Handler said “the Colorado Open Golf Foundation brought to our attention that if we raised it from $300,000 to $400,000 per year, it would make the men’s and women’s purses equal. We were immediately drawn to that. It made a lot of sense.” In addition to pay equity, Inspirato also supports numerous organizations that serve underprivileged youth, which made the 501(c)(3) Colorado Open Golf Foundation and its beneficiary, First Tee Green Valley Ranch, an attractive partner. In the same way that First Tee is both a game- and life-changer for kids, a $100,000 check can be just as transformative for an aspiring golfer, as previous champions Erin Houtsma (2005), Jennifer Kupcho (2020) and Savannah Vilaubi (2021) acknowledged. “In 2005, I got a check for $10,000 and it changed my life,” Houtsma recalled. “I bought a car and I lived in it while playing throughout the country on the Futures Tour.” Joining with Vilaubi via Zoom, Kupcho took obvious pride in her home state—and the site of her first professional victory— blazing a trail in pay equity. Now full-time on

the LPGA Tour, she shared that a good caddie would run her $100,000 for the year. “Every week is probably $3,000, so, depending on how many tournaments you play, it’s a very costly lifestyle but very rewarding to have the impact we have when all the eyes are on us.” “You learn how to win at the Colorado [Women’s] Open,” said Vilaubi, who last year qualified for the LPGA Tour. “The 50K let me play a little more freely, and inspired me to go after the next big check. I can’t imagine what 100K would be like. Can I get twice as much ramen now?” The Colorado Open Golf Foundation has a strong track record of increasing purses and creating what Colorado Open Golf Foundation Chair Molly Greenblatt calls “the absolutely best tournaments in the country for men, women and seniors.” In 2016, with CoBank as its title sponsor, the men’s purse doubled from $125,000 to $250,000, and the winner took home $100,000. The following year, its women’s purse went from $75,000 to $150,000, with $50,000 going to the champion. The seniors got a raise from $50,000 to $65,000 in 2020. Greenblatt, an attorney and golfer who was low-am the 1999 Colorado Women’s Open and is now in her fourth term as COGF chairperson, said she was happy in 2016 and ’17, “but I remember thinking to myself, ‘Why isn’t it the same as the men’s?’” So she persevered and advocated. “With-

fter the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at Eisenhower Golf Course at the U.S. Air Force Academy, the 36-hole Colorado Springs facility will finally host the 74th version of the event on its Blue Course July 1722, 2023. In doing so, it will become the first golf course affiliated with a military academy to stage a USGA championship. “We are so appreciative to have the opportunity to host the 2023 championship,” said Ed Mate, executive director/CEO of the Colorado Golf

Association. “The enthusiasm when we announced our initial involvement was incredibly high, so to be able to keep that going and stage what will be a world-class championship is a fantastic opportunity for the Colorado Golf Association and the entire golf community in the state.” Notable Girls’ Junior champions include World Golf Hall of Famers Hollis Stacy, Mickey Wright, Nancy Lopez, Amy Alcott and JoAnne Carner; Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Carol Flenniken; and major champions Pat Hurst, I.K. Kim, Inbee Park, Ariya Jutanugarn and Lexi Thompson.

Starting in 2017, Girls’ Junior champions earn an exemption into the following year’s U.S. Women’s Open Championship. The 2023 U.S. Girls’ Junior will mark the fourth time Colorado has hosted the event, and the state’s 34th USGA championship. Its 35th will come a month later when Cherry Hills Country Club hosts the U.S. Amateur Aug. 14-20, 2023. In related news, Colorado Golf Club, which hosted the 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur, will serve as the strokeplay companion course for the 2023 U.S. Am. usga.org/championships

What’s in a Name?

ithin a year of opening in Berthoud in 2018, TPC Colorado hosted a tournament on the PGA TOUR’s developmental Korn Ferry Tour. That event, the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes, went on to capture the KFT’s 2019 Product of the Year and the 2021 Tournament of the Year awards. (For good measure, Mark Fidrych of Windsor was named KFT 2021 Volunteer of the Year.) As of February 22, TPC Colorado will also hold the distinction of having the most appropriate name ever for a title-sponsored tournament for aspiring PGA TOUR pros: The Ascendant at TPC Colorado. The new name reflects a five-year partnership through 2026 with Ascendant National Title to serve as the event’s official title sponsor. The Ascendant at TPC Colorado will take place June 30July 3 with a $750,000 purse, up from $600,000. The winner’s share will jump from $108,000 to $135,000.

ix-time Colorado PGA award winner Trent Wearner has left Meridian Golf Club, where he first worked as an instructor with McGetrick Golf Academy 22 years ago and has operated his own academies since 2004. As of March 1, the Trent Wearner Academy—consisting of Wearner and instructors Ben Portie, Chelsea Soda, Peter Weisel and Chris Melendez—will teach at Cherry Creek Country Club in Denver, Meadow Hills and Murphy Creek golf courses in Aurora and Colorado National Golf Club in Erie. he budding golf career of 22-year-old Jackson Zinn of Westminster came to a tragic end March 15. A member of the golf team at the University of the Southwest—a NAIA Christian college in Hobbs, New Mex.—the 2018 Ralston Valley High School graduate was one of nine people killed about 30 miles east of the New Mexico state line when pickup truck blew a tire and crashed head-on into the team’s van as it returned to campus after a tournament in Midland, Tex. Zinn, who made First Team All-Conference while at Ralston Valley in 2017, had planned on a management career in the PGA, according to the school’s website. His dedication to the game was rivaled only by that to his family, church and the children playing in a special-needs soccer league his family organized. “He was an amazing young man, and I know I’ll see him again,” his father and frequent golf partner, Greg Zinn, told 9News. “But dang it, I wish I had him here for a little longer.” usw.edu

n 1930, the Chicago-based Western Golf Association and U.S. Open winner Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. established the Evans Scholars Foundation, wherein deserving caddies with limited financial means have received full tuition and college scholarships to four-year universities. To date, 11,556 outstanding young men and women have graduated as Evans Scholars from 21 universities—561 of them from the University of Colorado, where most of them spent their college days in the Evans Scholars Scholarship House. As of last month, 11 more will have the opportunity to join their ranks. Selected by the WGA and the Colorado Golf Association from a group of 25 applicants, this year’s group of high academic achievers consists of eight males and three females who hail from across the state. ittingly, new Colorado PGA Executive Director Steven Bartkowski shares a name with a onetime NFL Pro Bowl quarterback. Spending the past five years as signal caller for the Western New York PGA Section and the PGA REACH WNY Foundation, the enthusiastic New Yorker has built a reputation as a respected leader who puts up strong numbers, achieving double-digit growth in event participation, purse sizes and charitable contributions. From leading a Section of 250 PGA Professionals in Buffalo, Rochester and Northwest Pennsylvania, Bartkowski will now direct a section of 825 in a Section that covers Colorado, Eastern Wyoming and a small part of South Dakota. “My goal has always been to serve as many PGA Professionals I could,” he says. Bartkowski succeeds Eddie Ainsworth, who left the position in December after 14 years. He is the sixth person to hold the job since the Section’s founding in 1957. Bartkowski got his start in the industry while in high school. He was a USGA Boatwright Intern with the Buffalo District Golf Association for three years. A graduate of SUNY Cortland in New York, he served three years as the tournament director of the Western New York PGA Section. There he initiated and taught its first PGA H.O.P.E. (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program and created the Children’s Hospital Pro-Am, which had the largest individual professional purse for a Pro-Am to date.

He then represented the New Jersey PGA Section as the Director of Tournaments and Championships, managing a $800,000 budget and maintaining a strong relationship with the NJ State Golf Association through the co-conducted NJ Senior Open. In 2017, at the age of 27, he took the executive director’s job with the Western New York PGA Section, becoming the youngest in the PGA of America to hold that title. Among his many accomplishments, Bartkowski created the PGA Member Growth of the Game Grant Program in collaboration with Allied Golf Associations in 2019 that distributes close to $13,000 annually to PGA Professionals serving youth, military and diverse populations. The Colorado PGA Section has long committed itself to PGA REACH, PGA H.O.P.E. and numerous grow-the-game initiatives. Bartkowski’s record of fulfilling those charitable responsibilities while also serving the needs of members, generating revenue and improving the overall health of the game clearly made him a frontrunner for the job. “What I really like about Steve is he has almost 15 years of working in PGA offices,” said Interim Colorado PGA Executive Director Bob Doyle. “He is high-energy, says a lot in a few words and has extensive experience in the areas of tournaments, foundations and sponsorships. Enchanted Golf Crossing the state line into New Mexico begins a thrilling journey of discovery.

n 1961, a 13-year-old Jep Wille spent a week in the New Mexico town of Taos, on a family vacation. Thirty years later, he returned to the high desert, marked by its tangly, scented sagebrush, to build a golf course that has defined his career as an architect. Something of a star of the Austin, Tex., golf scene in his youth, Wille (pronounced “Willy”) played at Louisiana State University before working for course designers Leon Howard and Joe Finger as well as the team of Robert von Hagge and Bruce Devlin while continuing to play top-level amateur golf. Wille turned pro at age 37, breaking even on California’s highly competitive Golden

State mini tour. That’s where he met fellow professional Tad Bourg, who after leaving the tour joined three other investors in developing Taos Country Club. Aware of Wille’s past life in course design, Bourg hired him to design his course, thus saving the project a good deal of money. “I liked the way Jep thought,” Bourg says, “He was a big Alister Mackenzie fan and appreciated more natural courses. I liked that from a golfer’s perspective and a businessman’s.” Wille was especially pleased when he discovered what lay underneath the neverending sagebrush. “The views north, east and south to the Sangre de Cristo moun-

tains were spectacular, obviously,” he says, “but there was plenty of undulation and lots of little ridges and kinks that would make interesting golf holes.” Taos opened its first nine in 1992, was completed two years later for around $2 million total. It marked the first of Wille’s eight solo efforts, but none attracted as many accolades as Taos. At 7,000 feet above sea level, it stretches to 7,302 yards from the back tees. With few trees, a frequently powerful wind, 20-mile views west to the Tusas Mountains and just a handful of residences dotted here and there, Taos CC might strike some as a touch bleak. But challenges, such as the water carry on the par-3 11th, keep things interesting, and scoring opportunities—especially on the risk-reward par 5s on eight, 14 and 15 and the short par-4 17th—reveal themselves throughout this arroyo-rich landscape garlanded by silver-green chamiso. However memorable Taos might be, the highlight of your trip to the Land of Enchant-

ment could well come 45 miles southwest near Española, where the truly remarkable Black Mesa Golf Club takes you on a wild journey through a rocky moonscape of ridges and valleys. Designed by Baxter Spann and owned by the Santa Clara Pueblo, it opened in 2003 and received a near-constant stream of positive press. The five-star ratings dried up around 2013/14 following a major disagreement between the Pueblo and the course’s lessee that resulted in a rapid deterioration of course conditions. Tom Velarde, pro at Black Mesa since day one, winces at the memory. “Some of the comments we got on TripAdvisor and other sites were brutal,” he says. “But they were accurate.” Indeed, the course took on some unwanted color—yellow in the fairways as the dandelion went untreated, and brown on the once-revered greens as needy bentgrass went without the close attention it demanded and died leaving unsightly, unputtable patches. Thankfully, that unfortunate period in the life of Black Mesa is now a distant memory, owing to a new management initiative and support from the excellent Santa Claran Hotel that opened in Española in 2012. Equally vital to the course’s survival and healthy evolution, however, was the arrival of a young, talented and eager superintendent by the name of Aaron Sunderlin, who quickly identified his priorities, the most

crucial of which was repairing the course’s failing irrigation system. “The first step was solving the plethora of electrical faults and replacing the pumpstation panel,” he says (Black Mesa gets its water from the Rio Grande). “Then I needed to re-grass the greens, train and motivate my staff and complete the bunker project that began before I arrived.” To save money, the Pueblo had decided to take out 150 bunkers, a plan that not only has worked out financially, but improved playability. It’s still a stern test from the back markers, but the mid-high handicapper can look forward to fewer missteps in the sand now. Three years after Sunderlin arrived, Black Mesa is looking as good as it ever has and is, quite rightly, attracting the attention of golf’s most prestigious course rankings (#99 on golf.com’s most recent ranking of top 100 public courses) once again. Ten miles southeast, brings you to the resort-course version of the same Lazaruslike story. Towa Golf Club, which adjoins the magnificent Hilton Buffalo Thunder Casino Resort in the Pojoaque Valley, sports three nines—the Boulder, Piñon and Valley. A favorite of local “Butterfly Club” members and Buffalo Thunder guests, the 27hole facility saw a 60 percent increase in rounds during the pandemic—a spike that would have gravely concerned PGA Director of Golf Linda Howell during her first tenure at the course, from 2009 to ’13). “I did not agree with how Hilton was managing it,” she shares, recalling the dramatic deterioration of course conditions. “So, I left.” After five seasons at the award-winning Rockwind Community Links in Hobbs, Howell returned to Towa in 2018, when the Pojoaque Pueblo ownership took over the

management of the club. Thanks to Superintendent Jimmy Rodriguez—with whom she’d previously worked in Colorado at Cougar Canyon Golf Course in Trinidad— the conditioning shines like never before. Each nine opens with a 600-yard Par 5, and the toughest of the trio, the Bill Phillips-designed Boulder Course, features the state’s only island green Par 3 on its fourth hole, and an unforgettable plunge on its ninth. “From the tee you have spectacular views of the Sangre de Cristos and the Jemez Mountains,” Howell says. “And then there’s the unique nature of hitting to a green 100 feet below.” Jemez vistas also present themselves on every hole of Towa’s Valley Course, Irwin’s resort-friendly counterpoint to his challenging Piñon. The charms of Santa Fe and number of excellent courses await between Towa and Albuquerque. They include Cochiti, Twin Warriors, Santa Ana, Sandia and, of course, Paako Ridge. Paako, a vaunted Ken Dye design, was purchased in 2018 by New York turaround specialists Alvarez & Marsal, which has upscaled the property. It is still open to the public, but the green fee has risen to a very splurge-worthy $225 plus tax. In the Duke City itself, you won’t find a better round than the University of New

Mexico’s Championship Course, opened in 1967. Yes, it fits snugly between a busy airport and interstate, but don’t let that deter you from taking on Red Lawrence’s demanding layout that has hosted multiple NCAA Championships. Although remotely and respectively located in the northeast and southwest corners of the state, the highly decorated Piñon Hills (Farmington) and Rockwind Community Links (Hobbs) will more than repay the effort of getting to them. Then again, you can say the same for most New Mexico courses.

A loaf lover’s guide to Colorado’s growing crew of stellar artisan bread bakers.

or diehard fans, freshly baked bread is about as good as food gets. We crave that soft airy middle, chew-worthy crust and yeasty aroma. Spread with butter, toasted slices in the a.m. are as uplifting as any cup of espresso. Of course, that’s only true if it’s real bread—and not one of those ubiquitous plastic-wrapped sliced white imposters. Luckily, Colorado is experiencing an arti-

san bread revolution. Fueled by sourdough believers baking superior loaves, a worldclass bread culture is thriving under the radar at individual bakeries, panaderias and boulangeries. “Serious fermentation results in bread that’s better for you. It totally unlocks a world of flavors and textures,” says James Beard Foundation award nominee Andy Clark of Moxie Bread Co., the Colorado bakery named on foodandwine.com’s list of the best bread available in every state. With shops in Louisville, Boulder and Lyons, Moxie mills 100 percent organic heirloom grains onsite daily for its sourdough breads and flaky pastries. A continual line of fans stretches out the doors every day, drawn not only by the variety of baguettes, boules and buttery croissants but by inventive sandwiches and bags of fresh-milled flour. Calling these sourdough bakers “geeks” doesn’t do them justice. They juggle mixing, feeding starters, proofing and kneading

to transform four simple ingredients into a taste experience that is genuinely “artisan.” They are collaborating with farmers to source freshly milled heritage and heirloom grains with names like Khorasan, Rouge de Bordeaux, White Sonora and Blue Emmer. Out in Grand Junction, Kulina Lani Organic Sourdough Bakery is attracting the attention of bread fans and chefs. “Kulina” means “corn,” “lani” means “from heaven,” according to Pam Harsh. That’s the name that she and her husband, Shane, had for their organic corn farms in Colorado and Hawaii and use for their bakery which crafts breads, pastries and pizza naturally leavened without commercial yeast. The loaves are found on tables at local restaurants and in Western Slope winery tasting rooms. Kulina Lani’s varieties include a not-so-plain “Jane” simple sourdough loaf, a double olive bread, and “porridge,” a heavily seeded multigrain bread. “My mom had sourdough growing up, and I was raised on it, so I’ve had a chance

to get to know sourdough for 40 years,” Pam says, pointing out that sourdough bread doesn’t necessarily have to taste “sour.” She talks about Kulina Lani’s eight-year-old starter (the fermented dough used to leaven sourdough instead of active dry yeast) like it was one of her children. “It’s an awful-blessed starter. It’s been a very good, very gregarious starter,” she says. The couple is devoted to showing that bread and gluten may not be the gut-health villains behind every one of our dietary woes. “Why was bread called the staff of life?” Pam asks. “Civilization was built on bread. Yet, in the past 80 years, suddenly it’s bad for us. What happened?” The culprit, according to Shane Harsh, is commercial bread. “They call it ‘bread’ but it really is just flour dressed up to resemble bread,” he says, whether or not it’s labelled “whole grain.” Sourdough bread made from freshly milled ancient and heirloom whole grains and true fermentation makes it more digestible with more available nutrients. Basic science explains the apparent health benefits of sourdough bread. “Because it’s a fermentation

process, the gluten and the sugars literally get eaten up to make the beautiful CO2 that lifts that loaf. Pam Harsh says. It’s beneficial bacteria that you don’t get from commercial yeast. It ends up being very low gluten and low glycemic.” Key to crafting better loaves is milling fresh flour. “A kernel of grain is a living thing. You can plant it and it will grow. You always get a better loaf out of just-milled grain. Always,” Shane Harsh insists. The many other members of the sourdough society are easy to find. Denver’s original artisan bakery, Gregory Bortz’s Denver Bread Company, still produces the fragrant boules sliced in Denver’s better eateries. In The Source hotel in RiNo, Ismael De Sousa is drawing rave reviews for his international sourdough loaves at Reunion Bread Co., as is Zach Martinucci at Rebel Bakery. Boulder is a hotbed of serious breadsmanship. Chef Kelly Whitaker has championed the use of heirloom grains in the cuisine at his award-winning eateries, Basta in Boulder and Wolf’s Tailor in Denver. At his Dry Storage in Boulder, Whitaker mills grain

specifically grown for him to produce exceptional baguettes and seeded loaves. The cafe even serves a flight of heirloom toast with cultured butter and jam. Meanwhile in Colorado Springs, Shawn Saunders at The Sourdough Boulangerie uses a 350-year-old starter to craft “extra sour” spelt loaves not far from David McInnis’ mill and bakery at Nightingale Bread Co. Moxie Bread’s Andy Clark sees a great upside from the troops of new bakers who got some starter and flour and a recipe. “They really started to pay attention to bread and what’s actually in it and how it’s made,” he says. A recent crop of serious home bakers, like David Kaminer of northwest Denver’s Raleigh Street Bakery, have also launched cottage bakeries in neighborhoods. “It’s a great time for bread in Colorado,” Clark says, “and there’s more coming to meet the demand.”

Three the Hard Way While GMC and Jeep go big on- and off-road, Honda stays in its lane—and within budget.

2022 GMC YUKON AT4 THE YUKON has matured into a stellar full-sized SUV, with high-quality interior trimmings and a third row now commodi- EPA ous enough to match the first two, thanks to independent rear RATINGS: suspension. It also rides in an incredibly refined manner and 14/19/16 handles well for a big rig thanks to adjustable-damping and 0-60MPH: air-suspension options. Equipped with the 420hp, 6.2-liter 6.0sec “big block” and Max Trailering package, it was superb hauling PRICE AS TESTED: a 6,000-pound, 24-foot-long load behind it, yet still could fit $79,175 into smaller parking spots, unlike a pickup. A 5.3L and diesel are also available. GMC’s AT4 off-road trim package gives it presence and some real go-anywhere ability. The tech is generally superb, including Google-based software, but you can’t get adaptive cruise control on anything but a Denali version—a big omission for a vehicle of this price point. In most all other respects GMC nailed this one.

2022 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE OVERLAND WITH JEEP determined to move upmarket, EPA there’s a lot riding on how good the first RATINGS: new Grand Cherokee, since 2011, is. In 19/26/22 most respects, the Overland is everything 0-60MPH: it needed to be: imposingly contemporary 8.0sec (est) in exterior appearance, upscale inside, re- PRICE AS fined and quiet on pavement and capable TESTED: $62,885 off-road. The Overland is probably the sweet spot in the range for combining these virtues. Its air suspension cushions bumps, but firms up nicely in corners; its materials are price-appropriate and pleasing to the eye, and it is perfectly sized for empty-nesters and pre-family intenders. Graphics on the 10.1-inch touchscreen look great and the optional McIntosh sound system is one of the most accurate available. The Grand Cherokee’s only real weakness now is in its powertrains; the 290hp V6 is too torque-lite to move without continually having to mash the throttle, and the V8 Hemi drinks like many of us did during the lockdown. The upcoming 4xe plugin hybrid is a partial solution, but a twin turbo six would be perfect. In most all other respects the Jeep hits the bullseye.

2022 HONDA CIVIC TOURING THE CIVIC is in now its 11th generation and is America’s best-selling sedan. This latest version looks terrific, with EPA clean and classy lines outside and a contemporary cockpit RATINGS: that impresses at first glance, with textured trim, honey- 31/38/34 comb-pattern vent registers and soft touch moldings for the 0-60MPH: 7.5sec dash and upper doors. But Honda, like everyone these days, has had to cut some PRICE AS TESTED: corners to save money for all the tech goodies people de$28,695 mand, and things like a lumbar support for the driver’s seat and heated steering wheel are gone, even from the top Touring model. Instead, there’s wireless phone integration and charging and every imaginable driver aid bundled into Honda Sensing. A 180hp, turbocharged engine makes the CVT-style tranny tolerable, 60 comes in 7.5 sec. and the Civic routinely returns more than 30 mpg. Ride quality is very good and it handles well, as they’ve retained its multilink rear suspension. The Civic crushes the Corolla, but a Mazda3 is classier and has optional AWD.

Twenty years marks a period of such significance that it warrants its own name—a score. Immortalized in Biblical psalms and the Gettysburg Address, score derives from the vigesimal numerical system (as opposed to our 10-based decimal numerical system) used in ancient times. In Europe, shepherds counting their flocks would cut—or score—a notch on their crooks for every 20 head of sheep. As we know, along the Scottish coasts, when the shepherds finished their tallies, they’d use those same crooks to knock pebbles into holes along the linksland, creating a nascent form of the game we now know as golf. Scoring is essential to golf. No other sport cherishes the scorecard more. Sign an incorrect one and you’ll either find yourself DQ’d or losing in a playoff at the 1968 Masters when you really won the event outright by a stroke. As you can see from the numerical highlight reel from the following pages, we’ve learned how to score—and we plan to continue doing it.

Impeccable Credentials Kaye Kessler’s coverage of The Masters has ended, but his legacy endures.

n 1935, when Gene Sarazen’s double-eagle propelled him to immortality in the second Masters, Kaye Kessler was 10—the same age as Jack Nicklaus was in 1950 when Kessler, then writing for the Columbus Citizen, became the first to cover the cub that would become the Golden Bear. Thirteen years later, Nicklaus won the first of his six green jackets at Augusta while Kessler covered the first of his 56 Masters. One of only a handful of writers to have reported on that many, “Kess” or “Kessy” became a fixture at Augusta’s media center, where a photograph of him
