CANTEEN HARVEST FESTIVAL Big and Bountiful 14th - 16th September 12pm - LATE

Expect... Legendary Local Music | Fine fine Food | Terrace Games | We Want Your VEG ! Your allotment Veg = Free Canteen meal FRIDAY 14 SEPT | VAMOS: One of Bristol's best mestizo bands, conjuring a smile-inducing Eurobeat from their mix of Spanish, French and English roots and then stirring in a healthy pinch of Caribbean spices to give it that worldwide beach party vibe. www.myspace.com/vamosband SATURDAY 15 SEPT (MUSIC FROM 12PM) | AJI PA TI TBC: This lot give you contemporary cumbia and salsa, with plenty of instrumental flair, all the percussion uplift you could ask for and the vibrant voice and personality of Havana-born Indira Roman. Dance, damn you! MEDICINE CREEK: Medicine Creek is a stomping celebration of that old time Americana stuff, featuring the flailing fiddle of Aaron Catlow and Dorian Sutton's rock-solid bass (both from Sheelanagig) and the excellent Nuala Honan on guitar and vocals. It's as yee-hah as it should be, which is very (of course). www.medicinecreek.co.uk/

SUND 16 SEPT | SWEET LAREDO: Hey - where's this lot been of late? In the studio, of course, and you can get a taste of their SUNDAY impending album 'Little Things We Lost' if you check out this gig. Expect a rich mix of well-crafted soul, gospel and country songs with Sarah Scott's spellbinding vocals making each a little jewel in its own right. www.soundcloud.com/sweetlaredo AND a whole lot more to be announced! MOND 17 SEPT | LADY NADE: Lady Nade's voice has the husky resonance of a life well lived and lessons learned, and yet she's MONDAY one of the brightest young sparks to emerge in the last year or so. Her songs sketch moments of emotional transformation, love and loss, arranged with care and effortlessly delivered in That Voice. Yummy. www.myspace.com/ladynade TUESDAY 18 SEPT | MATT WOOSEY: Like the blues? Proper blues, mind, bashed out on a guitar with moanin' and howlin' and all that razmataz? Matt Woosey's your man, then, or maybe your mannish boy. www.mattwoosey.co.uk WEDNESDAY WEDNESD 19 SEPT | JALLA MICHTO: Ever since Parisian cafe society welcomed pairs of Gypsy-swing guitarists in the 40s it's been hard to beat that sizzling interplay. Jalla Michto's Brett Lewis and Graham Fellows give it all they've got while Trevor Davis' relentless percussion keeps the swing swinging. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJVoat8Hvjc THURSDAY 20 SEPT | WHAT FLAG: Sprung from White Flag, an original project convened in the Middle East, this Bristol-based fivesome slide poetic trance-dance vocals over rollicking modern jazz grooves on guitar and keyboards and bubbling drum and bass rhythms. They say 'world rock/jazz' but we say 'bring it on'. www.soundcloud.com/whatflag FRIDAY 21 SEPT | SHEELANAGIG: Their new album 'Cirque Insomnia' is still keeping everybody awake, thanks to the familiar instrumental wizardry gaining a rockier edge and even a few vocal numbers (albeit oddly surreal stories, as you'd expect) and though they've been touting their wares the length of Festivalland they'll happily always find time to visit us. www.sheelanagig.co.uk/ SATURDAY 22 SEPT | COOL BEANS: Cool by name but hot by nature, this is a fresh-from-the-oven collaboration between drummer Jason Newman and the flying bass of Eric Atofo. Expect funkiness but be prepared for surprises. http://www.reverbnation.com/coolbeansbristol SUNDAY 23 SEPT | GUY CALHOUN: This versatile singer/songwriter is perhaps best known as a guitarist and bass player in outfits like Dub From Atlantis, Jazz Reggae Sessions and Roots Prescription, but it's equally impressive to see him performing his own folk-blues acoustic material. www.myspace.com/guycalhoun MONDAY 24 SEPT | CANTEEN JAZZ SESSION: An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes TUESDAY TUESD 25 SEPT | CATHY JONES AND TRISTRAM COX: Performing Bossa Nova songs 'and much more', jazz and Latin vocalist Cathy Jones has one of those voices that clearly belongs in a Rio nightclub, delivering the kind of intense langour that befits the style while Tristram Cox's cool guitar adds the perfect Latin-jazz accompaniment. www.myspace.com/quartetobossa WEDNESDAY 26 SEPT | KALI MUR: Pioneering duo exploring the possibilities of drums (Ben Hooper)and acoustic bass guitar (Marcus Gee), weaving psychedelic lyrics around hypnotic rhythms that can be subtle and ambient or pompous and prog like an early, unplugged Pink Flloyd. www.soundcloud.com/kali-mur THURSDAY THURSD 27 SEPT | SIMO LAGNAWI &AMADOU DIAGNE: Sahara-straddling collaboration between Moroccan Gnawa master Simo Lagnawi's driving gimbri (lute) and the Sabar drumming and guitar playing of Senegalese griot Amadou Diagne. Expect a soulful fusion of plaintive Wolof melodies and hypnotic Gnawa trance grooves. ww.youtube.com/watch?v=QAS3jb_Z9ks www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUgvAzpytjw FRIDAY FRID 28 SEPT | RANDY SWINDLERS: The implausibly named Gaylord Gordon, Lip Lane, Norman Nutcrusher, Milo Mesmero and Randy Swindler himself are offering the unique combination of Easy Listening Music and 'sound financial support and advice'. You could believe all or none of that, but we think the clue is in the name. www.therandyswindlers.com SATURDAY 29 SEPT | JAZZ REGGAE SESSIONS: Given their equal devotion to both dub and jazz it was inevitable that Guy Calhoun (guitar) and Craig Crofton (sax) would come up with this project giving classic roots tunes an instrumental workout. Very good it is too, with Dan 'Pinstripe' Moore's keyboards, Flash (bass) and Des Rogers (drums) giving proceedings a proper set of riddims. http://www.myspace.com/jazzreggaesessions SUNDAY 30 SEPT | ACOUSTICIANS: Ace violinist and Balkaneer Fiona Barrow selects a choice ensemble of acoustic musicians to join her for an unpredictable voyage into the wider realms of improvisation, drawing on folk, jazz and global musical ideas to create a whole new palette of sounds.

Coexist passionate about hitting Bristol airwaves! Passion Radio Bristol.com has been supplying listeners with the best in alternative reggae, soul, jungle and drum & base for 14 years, and now Coexist has been invited to produce their very own weekly in-house show in order to promote the organisation and upcoming events in and around the area. Studio Manager Jackie, co-founder of Passion Radio, moved the station into Hamilton House earlier this year with help from some of the DJ’s and a few loyal listeners. “When we first started Passion, we decided we would make it a multi music station to try and reflect what is played in Bristol,” she said. “What sets it apart from other stations, aside from the music, is the cool and laid back environment. The DJ’s here are all volunteers; they could go to other stations, but they prefer to be here. Some of them have said it’s like meditation for them, somewhere where they can get away from it all for a couple of hours. I don’t know about the rest of the world, but I think we would struggle to find another radio station similar to Passion in the UK.”

7

Henry Taylor, assistant producer of the new Coexist show, shared a little of what listeners can expect in the future – “There will definitely be a wide range of music, mostly selected by tenants of Hamilton House, plus

interviews with anyone who wants to talk about a project or event they’re involved in. We also hope to have people who represent creative, social and political spheres on the show to talk about a variety of subjects that involve or affect the local area.” It seems fitting that Coexist and Passion Radio Bristol should join forces, as they are both equally enthusiastic about the community around them. “We talk about Passion as a family and listeners who’ve been with us for years & feel part of that family,” says Jackie. “One of the main aims of the radio show is to extend Coexist’s reach to more people,” adds Taylor. “As well as promoting events and exhibitions happening in Hamilton House, we will be discussing topics close to the heart of the community. Over time, the show will hopefully become a useful addition to Coexist’s Community output.” Tune in to Passionradiobristol.com 24/7 for the best alternative tunes and listen out for the Coexist show every Thursday from 10am-12pm.
