Welcome April has arrived, but don’t expect showers from this unpredictable weather we’re having here in Blighty. We could get snow, sleet, hail, or even sunshine! Hamilton House is as busy as ever and buzzing with energy. As we say every month there are way too many exciting things going on within these walls for you to be staying at home! We have full listings of what’s on this month including, weekly workshops & classes (check the back pages). There’s also tons of inspired live music in The Canteen, check the full listings in the centre pages for details. Make sure you come down and take a peek at the Artist Of The Month display on the right hand wall as you enter through The Canteen’s double doors. If you love the artwork and simply have to have it hanging on your wall at home get out your wallet and buy yourself a one off, locally created masterpiece. If you need some cooking inspiration, check the bottom right and try our super delicious Quick Menu Tip. The yummy recipie is cu-out-able! I’ll leave you with this inspiring quote, apt because we’ve just finished redecorating Hamilton Hub, our hotdesking/co-working suite... Quote of the month...

You’ll need: *300g gram flour *800ml water *150ml olive oil *2 leeks, thinly sliced *500g potatoes, cubed and parboiled for 1 minute *1 onion, thinly sliced *2tsp salt *black pepper

Farinata recipe First whisk the gram flour with the water and set aside for up to 2 hours. In the meantime roast the potatoes with a little oil and salt in a 240ºC oven. Stir fry the leek with oil and a pinch of salt and pepper until just soft. When the potatoes are slightly crispy and brown, remove from the oven and mix with the leeks. Line the same baking tray with greaseproof paper and pour in the remaining oil. Season the chickpea batter with salt and pepper and pour in the lined and oiled tray. Add the leeks and potatoes and distribute them evenly into the batter mixing in the oil a little. Scatter the sliced onion on top and grind some black pepper over it. Bake in the oven at 240ºC for 30-40 minutes until set and golden on top, if necessary turn on the grill for the last 5 minutes. Slice and serve warm.

Sam Green & The Midnight Heist This ridiculously good lap-steel guitar player rolls out his own contemporary folk songs of freewheeling wisdom.

Wed 3 Thur 4

MBP Trio While frequently funky tenor sax player John Pratt’s got a soul-jazz heart too, and this collaboration revels all.

Matt Woosey Like the blues? Proper blues, mind, bashed out on a guitar with moanin’ and howlin’ and all that razmataz? Matt Woosey’s your man

Ikestra Fri 5

Six very clever musicians from Leeds provide a sizzling update on Afrobeat and funkadelia, while Anna Stott’s elusive vocals add to the whole mystique. All very modern and danceable in a Tru Thoughts kind of way, with the genial smile of Sun Ra beaming down from out there.

Sat 6

Los Mercenarios Let’s talk funk, shall we? Heavyweight funk with jazz attitude. Or may be dub, ditto. Even a little Latin, likewise?

Sun 7

Nifty finger-picking guitarist and songstress Molly Samson bedecks her wistful and eloquent songs

Mon 8 Tues 9

Molly Samson & The Cautionary Tales

Lady Nade & Friends ft. Just 3 There’s always plenty of talent on display when the sumptuous-voiced Lady Nade gets her friends round to play.

The Flamenco Thief

Guitarist Craig Sutton is on a mission to take the flamenco style into a whole new place, using loop technology to build up big, anthemic sounds.

Kevin Figes Quartet One of the regions best combos, led by saxman (and flautist) Kevin who writes nifty modern jazz and Latin tunes

thu 18

Modou Ndiaye Cissokho Hailing from the famous Cassamanca region of Senegal, Modou’s roots lie in the Griot traditions of his family, a tradition that shows whether he’s singing, drumming or playing mesmerising music on the kora.

Randy Swindlers The implausibly named Gaylord Gordon, Lip Lane, Norman Nutcrusher, fri 19

Milo Mesmero and Randy Swindler himself are offering the unique combination of Easy Listening Music and ‘sound financial support and advice’. You could believe all or none of that, but we think the clue is in the name.

Sat 20

John Fairhurst There’s blues in John Fairhurst’s head that slips through slide-guitar fingers and gruffed up vocal chords and out into a Southern railroad siding

sun 21

Emily Wright & The Royals Smoothly louche vocal evocation of the swing music of the 30s and 40s and beyond, influenced by Nat King Cole, Edith Piaf and Blossom Dearie.

Jim Evans

home-made biscuit tin slide guitar and impressive hillbilly beard, he’s a damn fine folk and blues player and singer, too.

James Riley With his debut CD impending, this very folky singer-songwriter with an ear for Americana is heading out of London to let the world know about it.

Bad Hands With two ace guitarists - this new fusion/funk jazz foursome combine incendiary music with hip-snatching rhythm and no holds barred.

Kamba Band Remarkable coming together of West African roots and style with the

unusual tones of the Swedish nyckelharpa, playing a mix of Amadou Diagne’s songs and improvised rock-out trance grooves.

Ziriguidum Massive Brazilian-style carnival drum band in the contemporary Monobloco

style, complete with authentic Brazilian singers and even (on occasion) dazzlingly be costumed dancers. It’s a big noise they make and the urge to dance is irresistible.
