The Strategic CFO: Big Picture Skills December 4, 2015 | COCPA As the controller and CFO for a number of companies over the years, I finally decided that excellent accounting skills are just the ante to be in the game. To be successful as a CFO in today’s world, a more strategic or big picture view is essential.
I always had a handle on traditional risks like equipment breakdowns, business interruption, and fraud. What I did NOT always anticipate were strategic risks. Examples:
Attend this seminar and discuss the CFO’s role in four critical areas:
At one point in my career I was the controller for a company that manufactured jeans for Sears. At the time, Sears was the world’s number one retailer. In this seminar we will learn that Sears is now only the 12th largest retailer in the U.S. and fading rapidly. How did a company like Sears get to this point and what can they do about it? You will have an opportunity to determine if a “blue ocean strategy” may help turn Sear’s situation around by helping them find a unique value proposition in a niche where there is no other direct competitor.
I had an opportunity to lead a benchmark site visit trip to Kodak in Rochester, NY in the mid 1990’s. At that time the Kodak V.P. of Quality stated that the future belonged to digital photography, not traditional picture on paper photography. Few inside the company believed him and eventually Kodak declared bankruptcy. Who invented digital photography? Kodak in the 1970’s! Why did they not realize this new innovation would eventually take the place of their existing product line? How could the CFO have helped raise up the warning signs? Throughout the 1990’s I worked for the yellow pages division of the local Bell telephone company. At that time yellow pages had annual revenues of one billion and 4 | QuickSearch December 2015
a gross margin of about seventy percent. The phone company had millions in cash and access to millions of pieces of data about businesses and consumers. Why didn’t the phone company invent Google? We sometimes are blinded by our own historical success and fail to see the warning signs that the world is changing.
1. The CFO’s role in helping to shape strategy development. We will learn how the CFO can both help shape a company’s unique competitive advantage and help execute the strategy going forward. 2. The CFO’s role in strategic cash management. As we learned in the Great Recession, those companies with cash reserves and/or ability to obtain cash through loans, public offerings, or others sources survived. Those who had insufficient sources of cash did not. 3. The CFO’s role in risk management. Learn about tools to help identify unexpected risks, sometimes called “black swans,” which occur infrequently but can bring a company to its knees. How to envision black swans and have at least some ideas in your back pocket on how to mitigate such risks if they do occur? 4. The CFO’s role in strategic financial communication. Having innovative ideas regarding strategy and a complete understanding of the risks your company currently faces accomplishes nothing if you can’t effectively communicate your ideas to other senior executives in your organization.
