AccordingtotheCounty’swebsite,archaeologistsestimatethatthefirstinhabitantsofSussexCountyarrivedbetween 10,000and14,000yearsago.No,theywere notwearing“BethanyBeachBikiniPatrol” shirts,butwereinsteadnativepeople knownastheNanticokes.Theyarestillan importantpartofthecultureofthecounty, andtheirannualpowwowisatreasured event.

Dutchsettlersestablishedatrading postinwhatwenowknowasLewes,in 1631, perthesite,andtheyoriginallycalled itZwaanendaeel,or“ValleyoftheSwans.”

Aboutahalf-centurylater,according totheCounty,theKingofEnglandgave WilliamPennlandgrantsinwhataretoday PennsylvaniaandDelaware,andhesubsequentlynamedDelaware’ssouthernmost countySussex,afterhishomecountyin England.ThatdistributionoflandtoPenn kickedoffabitofaturfwarwiththe Calvertfamily,whogovernedwhatistoday Maryland, astheboundariesbetweenthe twobecamedisputed—provingonceagain

thatpeoplearealwaysmorethanhappyto fightovergrass.

In1791,Georgetownwasestablished astheseatofSussexCounty,givenitslocationasgeographicallycentraltotherest ofthecounty.Electionsthatyearwereoperatedbyvoterscomingtocasttheirvotes inGeorgetown,andthenphysicallyreturningtwodayslatertoheartheresults.

Thispost-electionhappeningbecame knownasReturnDay,atraditionthatcontinues todayasthewinnersandlosersof electionsreturntoliterally“burythe hatchet”(inaboxofsand,noteachother) andmoveontotheprocessofgoverning thepeople.

In1859,twoyearsbeforethestartof thenation’sCivilWar,therailroadreached Delmar,meaningfarmerscouldexport theirgoodstocitiesincludingWilmington, PhiladelphiaandBaltimore,changingthe faceofthelocalindustry.Agriculturegot anotherbigboostin1871,whenthefirst strawberriesinthecountyarethoughtto havebeenplantednearSelbyville,launchingaboomcroptotheareathatisstill strongtoday.

County’srichagriculturehistory?In1923, OceanView’sCecileSteeleordered50 chicksforheregg-layingbusiness.However,duetoaclericalerror,shereceived 500babybirds.Heringenioususeofthe excesspoultryledtothemodernbroilerchickenindustry,andmadeSussexCounty the leadingbroilerproducerinthenation. In1985,thepopulationofSussex Countyreached100,000people.Itonlytook until2010beforethepopulationhit 200,000people.In2020,pertheCounty, thepopulationreached235,000.USAFacts hasthecounty’spopulationlistedat 247,527asof2021.Noticeatrend?

SussexCountyissimplyadesirable placetolive,andithascontinuedtoshift andchangewhatitisonitsfacetoaccommodateagrowingpopulationwhileremaining abeloveddestinationspotfor visitors.

“Thisisatransitionalgarden.The successionofbloomstakesyou througheveryseason.Especiallypeople whocomeinthespringandseethe daffodils—theywanttoreturntosee themeadow.Itisatitspeakfromthe middleofMaytotheendofJune,althoughIamreluctanttosaythat,becausetherearesomanydifferent seasons thatonecanseethemeadow,” PryceLeasaid.

“AzaleaswerecominginearlyApril. ByJune,coneflowerswillbeinthe meadow,andtherewillbebeautiful summerflowerings—seaholliesand thingslikethat,”hesaid.

Walkingthroughthegardenisarealexperiencetoenjoyforafewhours,andweare alwaysexpanding.

“We’vegotkids’craftsthroughoutFridaysinJuly.Childrencancomeand,while their parentsenjoythegarden,theycan learnwithoureducationvolunteersteam,” hesaid.

Craftsincludingpapermaking,painting anddrawingflowers,andlearningabout seeds.Eventsandprogramsinthe37-acre gardenshaveincreased,andstaffmembersalwayshavenewideasforvisitors, includingtheclassButterflies&Blooms.

Thebigcelebritiesofthepreservearethe redkangaroocrew,thetwo-toedsloths, spidermonkeysandtheAsiansmallclawedotters,whomayormaynotbeconfusedwithnifflers(hideyourshinyobjects).

BonnieHall,aformertribalcouncil memberandSouthernDelawareTourism’s currentboardchair,pointedoutthatone ofthefirstthingspatronsseeuponenteringthemuseumistheNanticokeIndian flag,whichisdisplayedtowelcomevisitors intotheNanticokes’mostprizedpossession.

Attractingapproximately2,500visitorseachyear,themuseumhousesthousandsofartifactshandmadebyNanticoke ancestorsandlivingeldersthatshowcase theirlifestyleandtraditions.Exhibitionsof theirmastercraftsmanshipdisplay beadedjewelry,arrowheads,pottery,a headdressandheadbandbelongingtoformerchiefs,andbasketscarvedfrom peachpitsandwalnuts.

DaguerreotypephotosofNanticoke ancestorssitproudlyinexhibitcases,their patientexpressionswouldperhapssmileif theycouldseetheirdreamtoattainvisibilityasanIndiannationrealizedthrough themuseuminwhichtheirlikenessstands. Alongwithfarmingandfishingtools, manyoftheitemsinthemuseumchroni-

AstheonlyNativeAmericanmuseum locatedinDelaware,thecollectionalso featuresitemsbelongingtootherNorth Americantribes,suchastraditionalclothingfromtheNorthernPlainsregion,as wellasHopiandZunikachinadolls.Other facetsofthemuseumincludeamodest NativeAmericanlibrary,aminiaturereplica ofaNanticokevillageandagiftshopsellinggenuinehandicrafts.

Aslivingconnectionstothepast, manyofthestaffmembersareopento sharingtheirpersonalstoriesabout growingupintheIndianRivercommunity.

Harmon-Robbins,alsoknownbyherIndian nameofMorningStar,recalledherloving, butdifficultchildhoodgrowingupina familyof13children,withnoelectricityor runningwater.

“Myfamilygrewproduce.Theywould selllocalgroceriestothestore,butthey werealsonotallowedinthebuilding.They wouldn’trecognizetheNanticokeNative Americansatthattime,”shesaid.

ThemuseumhasaspecialsignificancetoHarmon-Robbins:thestructure wasestablishedbyhergreat-grandfather IsaacHarmon,whodonatedthelandto buildatwo-roomschoolhouseforNanticokeIndianchildrenin1921.Duringthe timeofsegregation,however,theState assumedcontroloftheHarmonSchool, renamingitWarwickNo.225andreclassi-

fyingitasaschoolforBlackchildren. Whiletheedificeremainedunoccupiedformanyyears,theNanticokeIndian tribewaseventuallyabletorepurposethe structureintoanindeliblesymboloftheir collectivestrengthandsenseofcommunityestablishingthemuseumin1984.

Hangingonthewallinthemuseumis oneofHarmon-Robbins’favoriteexhibits: anewspaperclippingofherfatherfrom 1930,chroniclingthelastNanticokepowwowbeforetheGreatDepression.Another photodocumentsthemomentwhenher great-grandfatherwastoldhewasthe ownerofmorethan800acresofland.

Bythe18thcentury,manyoftheNanticokeIndianshadbecomedisplacedfrom theEasternShore,forcedtoleavetheir

homebyEnglishcolonistsandtravelto otherregions,inOklahoma,NewYorkand Pennsylvania.WhiletheNanticokewayof lifewaslosttothosewhoassimilatedinto othertribesorwhitesociety,herancestors,theHarmons,wereamongsttheNanticokeswhoremainedintheregion.

SinceIsaacHarmonwasoneofthe Nanticokeelderswhocontinuedtolaythe foundationfortheirtribetoberecognized bytheState—withhisnameappearingon theincorporationdocumentsfrom1881— shehonorsherrelatives’fortitudebycontinuingtoupholdtheirtraditions.

“I’mlivinguptomyrelatives’expectationsofkeepingtheirheritagealive,”said Harmon-Robbins.

WhilemanyoftheNanticokes’historicalartifactsarepreservedbehindglass, themuseumoffersamoreinteractiveapproachwhenitcomestotheongoingconservationoftheirworldviewandtraditions.

Whilemanyofthemuseum’spresentations centeronNanticokehistory,residentstorytellerandCherokeedescendantRaggatha“Ragghi”Rainhostsspecial storytimeeventsatthemuseum,reciting legendsthat’vebeenpasseddownthrough generations.

Thelegendof“TheTurtleandtheCreationStory”—whichdetailshowtheirland wasfirstformedonaturtle’sbacktocreateTurtleIsland,orNorthAmerica—may havebeenadoptedbytheNanticokeIndiansfromothertribalnations,butthemyth hasbecomesynonymouswiththecommunity’sidentity.TheNanticokeIndiansof theDelawareBayregionaredesignated astheTurtleClan,witharepresentation ofTurtleIslandfeaturedontheir tribe’ssymbol.

“Nomatterhowoftentheselegends areshared,wewalkawaywitharenewed spiritandswelledprideinwhoweareasa

people,”saidHall.

Inadditiontothemuseum’sspecial eventscelebratingHeritageDayandNative AmericanHeritageMonth,theNanticoke IndianAssociationwillbehostingtheir 45thannualpowwowatHudsonFieldsin MiltononSept.9-10.

“TheannualNanticokeIndianPowwow isthetribe’sprideandjoy,”saidHall,noting thattheeventgivestheNanticokepeople aplatformtosharetheirtraditionswith thepublic.

BoatrentalsatTrapPondopenthefirst weekofMay,fromtheboatlaunch.Theprices are$9perhourforcanoerentalor$45fora day;or$10forkayakrental($12fortandem kayaks)or$50foraday.Kayakersandcanoeistscanalsobringtheirownwatercraftand justpaythe$4stateparkentrancefeeatthe TrapPondmaingate.

“TheTrapPond9-milewaterwayand2.8milekayaktrailisnoweasierforeveryone,”said WillKoth,theinterpretiveprogrammanagerat TrapPond.“Wecanmakeitfartherbackintothe channelwiththeclearingofthewaterway.We needtocontinueourstewardshipofthesewaterways.Thesearelongflatsofcypressswamp andexperiencedpaddlersmaywanttostartat RecordsPond—thecurrentisswift,andyou canfeelthewaterflowandthestreamchannelschange,”dependingonwhereoneembarks.

ShaunaMcVey,communityrelations coordinatorforDelawareStateParks,added, “It’sanicefloatback,andanyonecantrytheir handatit.Wewantourvisitorstoexperience

natureinthisway.”

“It’sashelteredwaterwayandthereisnot toomuchwind,soyoucanpaddlefromanydirection,”saidKoth.

PointsofinterestincludeJasonBeach, whichpaystributetoBlackculturalheritageand recognizesthat,whenTrapPondstatepark systemwasbuilt,thepark’sbeacheswere functionallysegregated,ifnotlegallyso.Itis namedforDr.WilliamC.Jason,thesecond longest-servingpresidentofDelawareState University,ahistoricallyblackcollegeor university(HBCU).

CypressPointisthemainattraction,with JamesBranchPondandnaturepreserve fartherdownthetrail,andTrussumPond, whereboatersareimmersedinthecypress trees.ThedamatTrapPondwasrebuiltbetween1936and1937bytheCivilianConservationCorpsandcreatesthepond.Inthespring, thewaterisbetween55and60degrees Fahrenheit,sodumpingakayakorcanoemeans achillyreturntoshore.

Parkofficialsemphasizedsafetyonthe watersaboveallelse,includingusinglifepreserversandabuddysystemforkayakand canoetrips.DelawareStateParkshasjustissuedasummerguidescheduleforcampexperiencesandcanoeorkayaktrips.Theparkand watertrailareopenfromMaytoOctober,and experiencedkayakersareabletomaketrip arrangementsinthewinteraswell.

Therearenumerousweekendtoursavailableforvisitors,andreservationsareencouragedandcanbemadeonline.

“WewantTrapPondtogrowandbecome thelargestparkwithamenitiesinoursystem,” saidRayBivens,stateparksandrecreationdirector,inasneakpreviewofwhatisyettocome fromthedivision.Bivenspredictedthenewinstallationofasplashpadandtheupgradeof fiveexistingprimitivemini-cabinswithnobathrooms,improvingthemtooffer10enhanced cabinswithtoiletsandplumbing.

“Campingnightsincreasingfrom67,000 overnightstaysto150,000—sowehavegrown by120percent,”duringthelastdecade,said DNRECSecretaryShawnM.Garvin.“Mostof ourcampersarefromDelaware,Maryland, NewJerseyandPennsylvania,andwehave guestsstayinginDelawarefromeverystate intheunion,”hesaid(except,curiously,no residentofNorthDakotaisrecordedas havingcampedthere).
