notice. That’s not much, really, when you figure you’ve been here for two years, or five years,” he said. Next door, the staff at Peter F. Pook Insurance Agencies Cloverdale branch are looking forward to moving after more than 20 years in the mall. The agency is making the move to #5 5723 176 Street, opening up Nov. 1 less than a block away. Located in a mall kiosk “since forever,” according to insurance broker Ellen Naylor, the agency moved to a storefront office in recent years. “The great thing about this mall is it had lots of parking,” she said. The city’s notice, she said, didn’t come as a surprise. “We knew it was coming.” The prospect of moving out of the Cloverdale Mall is proving much more daunting for the Cloverdale Sikh Society, which only learned late last week that the extension they’d “begged” the city for last month has been granted to Jan. 31. That’s a total of six months’ notice to move the temple, which is at the centre of Sikh community life for more than 300 people – and is considered sacred ground. The temple houses a large, vented kitchen that’s used

virtually every day by volunteers who cook up meals enjoyed by members and even local homeless people. On weekends, hot food is prepared for hundreds. The eviction extension means the Cloverdale Sikh Society can honour its bookings and hopefully find a suitable new location to build a new temple, but society president Ajit Saran and general secretary Balwinder Saran say they’re worried.

“The great thing about this mall is it had lots of parking...” - Ellen Naylor They said three more months won’t be enough time to build a new temple, much less raise enough money and secure funding to pay for one. “We don’t want to stay here,” Saran said. “We don’t want to cause any problems. But the city should help us. We will go.” It’s not a simple matter of packing up and moving things into storage, however temporary. The Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, is a sacred object that’s so revered, it’s treated like a living being. Simply putting it into storage

isn’t an option, society representative Gary Grewal said. “We are begging the city, give us a little more time,” he said. Property manager Ken Woodward of the city’s Realty Services department confirmed the society has been granted an extension to Jan. 31. “We’ve checked it out and we can do a lot of the predemolition work with the Sikh Society in its location,” he said, adding six months should leave adequate time for the society to relocate its temple. But Woodward is concerned that some of the other non-profits in the mall won’t be moved out by Nov. 1. The groups – which range from church groups to a theatre company – were able to afford the mall because it wasn’t too expensive. “When it’s time for these people to leave, it’s difficult to find accommodations that are similar,” he said. Plans are also underway to relocate the soup kitchen that’s been operated by a small church group at the mall. Woodward said the mall will be torn down in early February, with construction on the new development slated to begin early next spring. It won’t sit empty for long, he said.

Heritage series delves into Disco, Whalley, and South Asian pioneers

Surrey Archives kicks off its fall Surrey history lecture series tomorrow with an invitation to re-live “Surrey in the 1970s” – a decade of tremendous growth. The Oct. 16 session will give you a sense of what the disco decade was like in Surrey, through archival photos, maps and newspaper advertisements. The Indo-Canadian community has long roots in B.C., dating back to the early 20th century. On Oct. 23, SFU Canadian

history emeritus professor Dr. Hugh Johnston will explore that legacy in his talk, Indo-Canadian Pioneers. “Whalley: A Photographic History” features hundreds of archival photos from the city’s storage vaults. Come see what the City Centre used to be like before it’s transformed over the next few years. This session takes place Saturday, Nov. 6. “The War Years in Surrey” on Nov. 13 explores how Surrey con-

tributed to Canada’s war efforts during the 1910s and 1940s. Pre-register for these sessions by calling 604-502-6459. The cost for each is $10, or $35 for all four. Sessions run from 11 a.m. to noon. The Surrey Archives is located at 17671 56 Avenue in the 1912 Municipal Hall in Cloverdale. Operating hours are Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 am. to 5 p.m.

The government’s tougher drinking driving laws not only put the boots to drivers with blood alcohol readings over .08 but also take aim at those in the .05 to .08 range, who can lose their car for three days and face a $200 fine. Ouch. Yes, but these tougher laws are needed. Something has to be done

to prevent the needless deaths of people like four-year old Alexa Middelaer, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2008. But are they enough? Will they work? And will they only affect the people who were likely to follow the old rules more than the scofflaws? Certainly, these rules will stop law-abiding citizens from having a second glass of wine at dinner. Many will just stay home to avoid the embarrassment of having their car impounded for bloodalcohol readings that are less than the legal limit. Who wants to take

ter with the B.C. Federation of Labour were Delta Mayor Lois Jackson, Burnaby’s Derek Corrigan, City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto, District of North Vancouver Mayor Richard Walton, Anmore’s Heather Anderson, Lions Bay Mayor Brenda Broughton, New Westminster’s Wayne Wright, Port Moody’s Joe Trasolini and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson. B.C.’s $8-an-hour minimum

wage hasn’t risen since 2001 and is now the lowest in Canada. “Low-wage workers face a constant struggle to find housing and feed themselves and their families,” Trasolini said. “The nine-year minimum wage freeze also stretches the resources of municipalities that must help provide services that low-wage workers simply cannot afford themselves.” Labour minister Murray Coell appeared to signal a softening in the provincial government’s position on the issue in a forum with civic leaders Sept. 29, saying a higher minimum wage wouldn’t be a job killer and would be considered in the future.

PORT TAX TUSSLE

Local cities could go to court to try to force Port Metro Vancouver to pay back property taxes the municipalities say are owing. North Van city Mayor Darrell Mussatto says the port has underpaid property taxes for years. Cities are demanding repayment of $10 million in back taxes as well as corrected payments going forward. Mussatto said the port pays property taxes based on lowballed assessments from private assessors it hires – not B.C. Assessment Authority numbers the cities want used. A Supreme Court of Canada decision found Montreal is owed taxes from its port authority.

FIND A FOUNTAIN, FAST New iPhone apps have been unveiled for Metro Vancouver Parks and to find public drinking water fountains or taps. Metro’s Tap Map app gives users a map of fountains or other publicly accessible spots they can fill up water bottles. It’s the latest tactic in the region’s push to encourage more people to use tap water rather than bottled water and reduce the number of plastic bottles tossed in the garbage. Users of other smart phones or computers can search “Tap Map” at metrovancouver.org to find the same information. A second iParks Explorer app from Metro gives sm

users information on the 22 regional parks, including maps, directions, amenities and calendar listings of interpretive programs and other events. Both apps are free downloads from the iTunes app store.

COMPOST FEES RISE?

Metro Vancouver will look at raising the fees it charges for licensing various private landfills and composting operations. Part of the aim is to charge differing fees to encourage higher recovery of material value and energy, according to a staff report. There are 31 licensed private operators in the region, including private transfer stations, compost plants, one private landfill in Richmond and various brokers of recyclables. – Black Press

Tom Jackson brings his expertise to Kwantlen Saturday.

He’s been called the number-one live music producer in the industry, helping artists like Taylor Swift, Jars of Clay and Jordin Sparks create memorable live performances and connect with their audiences. Tom Jackson, also a singer and actor, is bringing his expertise to Kwantlen’s Langley campus Saturday in the form of a live music seminar. Admission is $30 for members and $40 for non-members. The forum runs from noon to 3 p.m. at the Langley Campus, 20901 Langley Bypass. For seminar descriptions, visit www. bccountry.com.

Books on the inside, outside, on the corner Vancouver for next year. In the meantime, I can do some PR for our marvelous Surrey International Writers’ Conference coming up October 22-24 at the Guildford Sheraton. Quickly I Bic-mark in my notebook: “Check out Kindle, or similar, for next flight (or trip to Crescent Beach)”, and head for The Rogue. Thankfully ye old chop house remains tangible and securely chained to the waterfront.

Shrewsbury, Herefordshire, Hay is a haven for second-hand book enthusiasts. The quaint hilly village sports books inside, outside, on street corners, and in coffee shops and local pub. One could never enjoy such a treat with e-books. The thought jolts me back to Vancouver just in time to tune in to a tall blonde enquiring, “Will you join us to the continue the discussion in the pub across the street?” It’s an offer I can’t refuse. A fitting end to end an invigorating day well spent. I’ve bookmarked BookCamp

“My long time association with The Cloverdale Reporter and its affiliate newspapers, The Surrey Leader, Peace Arch News, and The Langley Times, is based on a solid, mutual understanding of the importance visual impact has on my business. Their team of talented photographers and graphic designers work hard to ensure my ads are fresh, eye catching and colorful to attract attention. The proof is in the pudding, as they say. I can always guarantee the jewelery in my ads will sell. Customers call in to ask if the piece they saw in the newspaper is still available, or walk into my store holding the ad looking for the item that caught their eye.

I sprained my ankle playing sports. What does this mean and what can I do? A sprain generally refers to an injury of the ligament, which attaches bone to bone. It is characterized by pain, swelling and limited mobility of the ankle joint. SELF HELP MEASURES Rest- avoid walking on uneven terrain, running, jumping or any activities that aggravate the pain Ice- the ankle 2-3 times per day for 10-15 minutes to reduce pain and swelling. Compression- use a tensor/ankle wrap to provide support and sensory awareness to the ankle joint. Elevate- the ankle by placing a pillow lengthwise under the knee, leg and ankle. Physiotherapy modalities i.e. laser, ultrasound and magnetic therapy serve to promote healing and decrease pain or swelling. Manual therapy i.e. joint mobility and massage help to regain mobility and prevent or breakdown scar tissue. A rehabilitation program will help to regain strength, balance, full function and a safe return to sport/recreational activities.

Q

What’s the best way to negotiate price once you’re ready to buy?

A

Moving forward with an offer can be complicated, which is why you should agree on details with your REALTOR, and then allow them to use their experience to enter into negotiations on your behalf. As you’d expect, your REALTOR will use in-depth ‘comparable’ information as a valuable negotiating asset when presenting your offer to the seller. But it’s also a good idea to authorize your REALTOR to relay pertinent details such as your desired possession date and financial ability to complete the sale. Having a substantial deposit on the property at the time of the offer is also recommended, to show that you’re serious about the purchase. Sellers are much more likely to accept an offer if they’re confident that it’s financially solid. Your REALTOR can also advise you on other ways to ‘package’ your offer, based on their knowledge of the seller and the REALTOR representing the seller’s interests.

What can I expect on a road test? Your Class 7N or Class 5 road test will be conducted by an ICBC examiner for approximately 30 minutes. The test will begin with a check of your vehicle’s safety features. Once on the road, the test will include right and left turns, through-intersections, general driving and vehicle handling. You will be evaluated on your ability to successfully apply these five basic skills: 1. Communication (proper use of signalling before turns and manoeuvres) 2. Steering (no palming or underhand turning) 3. Speed (keep to posted speeds and watch for playgrounds and school zones) 4. Space (proper lane and stop position, understanding of right-of-ways i.e. 4-way stops) 5. Observation (shoulder checking into the blind spot before turning right and changing lanes) The Class 7N test (permitted after one year of the learner stage) includes manoeuvres such as parallel parking, curb and hill pullovers, and reverse stall parking. The Class 5 test (permitted after two years of safe driving in the novice stage) has less manoeuvres but requires driving on a 70 km/h+ highway and a running commentary to point out perceived road hazards. We welcome the opportunity to teach you safe driving techniques in a relaxed and friendly environment and assist you on your road to success!

My co worker and I both started with our current company the same week in the same role. It has only Listings Wanted! “Freeone Market Evaluation Obligation” been month andNoshe has already been promoted to a new role as someone left the company soon after we started. I am not sure why she got the job and I didn’t? Without being in your office I cannot say in this instance precisely why, but I can tell you what I did see last year in a very similar situation to yours. Two ladies started in fairly junior roles and from week one were questioning everything to do with wages (theirs and others), shift hours, and whom they should be reporting to. I am sure their concerns were honest, and they didn’t mean to cause any disruption, but they added extra stress to an already stressful department. Another lady started soon after and her attitude was to go with the flow, bury her head, and just do the best job she could. She refrained from “water cooler” politics, let her work do the talking for her, and within four weeks was offered a bigger portfolio in the company. There are times to speak up and time to work, and she could differentiate. Can you?

Purchasing a sewing machine from the big box stores is not a good Idea. Big box stores do not give you any aftersale support such as machine instruction or warranty. The machines that “they” sell are made to meet a price point and will not perform some everyday functions such as hemming jeans. The warranty for your machine is with the manufacturer so if there is a problem with your machine you will have to ship it to them at your own cost, diminishing your savings that you thought you had. At Castle’s we only sell the best quality sewing equipment on the market at competitive prices. We have onsite factory trained technicians to handle any problem that may arise. Also, we include free of charge, one on one instructions with the purchase of your machine. This is a free service that we offer you for as long as you own the machine! So, it doesn’t matter if you are just mending jeans or sewing a snugly quilt. Castle Sewing will exceed your sewing needs!

SULLIVAN ULLIVAN OPTOMETRY What are some of the latest and best features available in eyeglass lenses?

By category, here are some highlights: Single Vision Lenses: Extremely thin 1.74 index is now more readily available and make high prescriptions more cosmetically pleasing. High index lenses also have a built-in UV block. Excellent new anti-reflection coatings called oleophobic ARs, are very much smudge-friendly and easy to clean. Computer Lenses: Usually for the 20-40 year old patients. These lenses are designed with extra focusing power to decrease eye strain and fatigue while using a computer for long periods of time. Progressive Lenses: With progressive lenses, it is the DESIGN that is important and not the manufacturing process. Beware of loose terms like digitally enhanced, high definition and so on, as they refer only to the process and not the design (which can sometimes be a 35 year old design!!). Sunglass Lenses: The High Transmission (HT) lenses, which are green lenses at 555nm, have a little sharper optics . UV blocks are mostly a given now, so the main feature to look for is a lens that is polarized, preferably with anti-reflective coatings on both sides of the lens.
