On July 31 the Cloverdale-area tunesmith was awarded a Golden Guitar – top prize in the Shore 104 FM’s Sounds of Summer song search contest. The trophy was handed to him by none other than Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson and Jim Cuddy from Blue Rodeo on a stage at English Bay the same night as the big fireworks display. Contestants’ songs were also judged using input from radio station staff, listeners and online votes. Not surprisingly, the win feels pretty good. “It’s been amazing to have the recognition and validation,” he says. All that attention and publicity have made the past few weeks seem pretty surreal, to say the least. “I kind of feel like a character in somebody else’s story,” Pick says, saying it still feels “really weird” turn the dial on the radio and hear himself singing. band-style contests, the Shore song search is “more about songwriting,” he says. “I’m a fan of good songwriting. Every time you listen to a good song, you take

something new away from it,” he says. He lists singer-songwriters like Daniel Lanois, Bob Dylan, Patty Griffin, Ray LaMontagne and John Lennon among his faves. An accomplished gui-

tarist and musician, Pick is a relatively recent import to the West Coast, where he played with the Vancouver band Doubting Paris, now on hiatus. Originally from Medicine Hat, he moved

from Alberta about eight years ago, landing first in Langley, and more recently Cloverdale. Pick always meant to move to downtown Vancouver, a frequent destination, but never

quite made it that far. “I’m used to having wide open spaces around,” he says. “Usually, after the end of the day in the city, I love driving home,” he says. “Cloverdale is a beautiful place.”

Those wide open spaces can be heard in the haunting melodies and unhurried pace of his winning sound of summer song, “My Century”, and the other songs on his 2009 EP, the aptly-named Fierce Wind. Two songs from that album, “Drifters” and “Bad Dream”, were featured on the TV show One Tree Hill, but there are no frothy, lighthearted pop tunes. Instead, the listener will be rewarded with melodious, intimatesounding works – meditative, personal songs that lend themselves to repeat listenings and a secure piece of real estate on iPod playlists, whatever the season. As good as the songs are, it’s Pick’s whisperysmooth, prairie-strong vocals that set him apart from lots of other talented performers vying for the spotlight. So, it comes as a surprise to learn the solo

effort was his first foray as lead singer. Until striking out on his own, he sang backup. He also plays cello, guitar, slide guitar, mandolin, and a bit of the bass. “Really, whatever I can get my hands on,” he says. In addition to the “golden guitar” and a slot at the Aug. 14 Burnaby Blues + Roots festival, he won studio time to complete a fully mixed and mastered four-song EP, a music video and a $5,000 gift certificate to Tom Lee Music – prizes that will allow him to focus on the kind of songwriting that got him to this point, he says. As summer 2010 winds down, Pick’s busy performance schedule continues. Local audiences got a chance to see him Aug. 26 at Langley’s Willoughby Hall, where he opened for indie musician Tucker Green at Green’s CD release party.

Kwantlen students. They vote in late October on a referendum that will determine whether they all must pay $30 per month to join the U-Pass system giving students universal transit access. It’s a popular idea at colleges in Vancouver that aren’t yet on U-Pass but students in Surrey and Langley have questioned whether it’s worth it at TransLink’s current service level. “We would love a commitment for an express bus between the Langley campus to the Cloverdale campus to the Surrey campus so students and community members can access quick reliable transit service,” Griffiths said, adding such a move would probably cement support. As it now sits, he predicted Richmond Kwantlen students will vote yes, Langley students will oppose it and Surrey students will be more evenly split. “It’s anyone’s guess what will happen,” he said. “In order for the U-Pass to come to Kwantlen, it has to receive a majority across all the campuses.” TransLink spokesman Ken Hardie said students will have to consider various factors when they vote, including the comfort of transit service in all weather conditions. “We’re aware that transit service south of the Fraser still needs to be beefed up and its something we want to do – when the resources are there to do it.”

Dual race tracks not realistic

To the editor; Re: “Double or nothing? High stakes for Fraser Downs if tracks merge,” Aug. 27 Reporter Jeff Nagel wrote a good article that touches on some of the options for horse racing in general, but he does not know all the problems involved. A dual track would force both breeds onto training facilities off-track. There are nowhere near the number of training facilities available to train both breeds. The cost of building such a facility is cost-prohibitive. The standardbreds need to train on a yearly basis to just get colts ready to race, let alone getting the older ones ready to race again.

At present, we train at Fraser Downs in preparation for the coming meet. At present, the track, in order to facilitate thoroughbreds, would have to be made larger, and there is not sufficient room as it is now and have a barn area, too. Nagel also speaks of upgrades Great Canadian Gaming Corp. has done to racing facilities. I would love to see these upgrades. I train at Fraser Downs! As to advertising, etc., we of the harness sector were told the BC Lottery Corp. had taken this over, but recently learned they have already spent their budget on the thoroughbred meet.

To date, we have seen no advertising for the upcoming Fraser Downs meet even though we will be starting Oct. 1. The idea of a dual track at Fraser Downs is not realistic. These are two separate forms of racing horses with completely differing needs. I would also like to hear more on the recent resignation of two key B.C. racing committee members. Trust me, Mr. Nagel, you have a lot to learn. I believe your heart is in the right place.

Uh, Tom? We’re taxed enough already To the editor; Re: “Sorry, the HST isn’t going away,” Aug. 27 Your Victoria correspondent, Tom Fletcher, appears to be sold on the rhetoric coming out of our capitol city about the HST and the threatened cuts to “our government services, which we all have come to expect.” Stop there a minute, Tom. Personally, I have no expectations of being the now and future recipient of all of these so-called

services. For one thing, the cornucopia will soon be empty, and for another, most of the older taxpayers (and younger, as well) never, ever, asked to be blessed in this manner. With taxes, government fees and a plethora of more-or-less cleverly hidden official charges in Canada today approaching 60 percent of the average Joe’s take-home pay, how much longer can we afford to allow our politicians and our commissars to pile

The Cloverdale

taxes upon taxes? We are already quickly approaching the breaking point. Or do you think we perhaps should go all the way and suffer taxes at 100 percent and then wait for our food stamps and rental chits in the mail from Victoria or Ottawa? Jon Ferry had an interesting piece in the Vancouver Province on August 16, 2010 titled “Abuse of taxpayers goes far beyond HST”. You should read it, Tom!

Extremely enlightening! Or have you perhaps been too close to the ivory towers in downtown Victoria for far too many years? Maybe it is time for you to move around the province a bit and listen to fellow British Columbians. You might even be able to learn something.

Promoter cancels racetrack concert ‘Tritt & Friends’ will have to wait for better weather

By Jennifer Lang The Travis Tritt concert at Cloverdale’s Fraser Downs has been postponed until sometime next year. The Grammy-winning country music superstar was supposed to headline a Sept. 24 concert on the racetrack’s infield. Billed as Travis Tritt & Friends, the concert was also slated to feature performances by Chad Brownlee, Emily Taylor Adams, Chris Buck Band and One More Girl. But when another commitment came up, the star asked to back out just three weeks before he was to headline the show. “He wanted to reschedule,” said Don Adams of Vancouverbased Don Paul Entertainment. Adams explained the performer’s contract allowed Tritt to back out within 30 days of the concert at Fraser Downs in the event of a conflicting TV, movie or other lucrative offers. Ultimately, however, the decision to postpone the concert was at the promoter’s discretion. “We just felt that at this point, we didn’t want to create a problem,” Adams said. “We’ve rescheduled for next year. We’re not sure of the date. He’s open to rescheduling it to whenever we can do it.” Adams said his company – which brought the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to Cloverdale last

year – looks forward to working out something for Tritt at Fraser Downs, an outdoor venue with a capacity of 4,000. Tritt had offered to perform later in the fall, but the concert will have to wait for better weather, said Howard Blank, vice president of Great Canadian Gaming Corp., the company that owns and operates Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. “The trouble with an outdoor concert in Canada is you can’t reschedule in November,” Blank said. Tritt also pulled out of a Sept. 25 performance on Vancouver Island. Instead, he’ll appear at next year’s Sunfest music festival. An explanation for Tritt’s B.C. cancellations

emerged Tuesday, when faith-based film company Desert Wind Films announced the singer has agreed to play the role of Eddy Waters in Fishers of Men, a feature film that begins filming Sept. 13 in the Bainbridge area of Tritt’s native state of Georgia. A story published Sept. 7 in the weekly newspaper, The PostSearchlight, said Tritt has also agreed to write a song exclusively for the film’s soundtrack. The six-week shoot is expected to wrap Oct. 11, the article says. Meanwhile, anyone who purchased tickets to Tritt’s Sept. 24 show through Guest Services can contact Fraser Downs for a refund. Ticketmaster will also reimburse their customers.

That’s why the Province of B.C. is implementing full day kindergarten for more than half of all five-year olds in 2010 and for all eligible children starting in 2011. Providing kids with an early start will give them the skills they need to be successful in school and to be prepared for the opportunities of the twenty-first century. Man about the house – on loan

By Jennifer Lang Why own when you can rent? When it comes to business, that’s Duane Wendt’s guiding philosophy. A retired carpenter with years of experience in the construction industry, the Cloverdale resident has found an unusual niche business. He calls it Rent-AHusband. That friendly suggestion is printed on the side of a buggy he uses to haul tools around behind his electric bicycle. Maybe you’ve seen him riding around town – Wendt rides his Electricruiser everywhere, logging hundreds of kilometres a week, he says. He started advertising his home-based business in this way about two and a half months ago. A lot of his customers are seniors who’ve

lost their spouses and now need someone else to do odd jobs around the house, like cleaning the eaves, raking the lawn, or small home repairs. He provides free estimates and charges a flat rate per job.

He notes a growing number of customers are young couples or families that are either too busy or lack the expertise to tackle those jobs around the house. “It’s the little odds and ends they just can’t

get at,” he says. “Window cleaning, broken taps – they don’t have time to fix it.” Originally from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Wendt has also lived in White Rock and South Surrey.

Pairs of running shoes dangle from a sign over 57 Ave. along Highway 15.

Tossed away? Or are the shoes a warning? Dangling runners give rise to a local mystery

Several pairs of perfectly good running shoes are dangling from the power lines across 57 Ave., and Highway 15 in Cloverdale. It’s not clear whether this particular example of “shoefiti” is symbolic or is intended as a message. The long-standing, widely-practiced activity of shoe-flinging has given rise to numerous theories. Explanations range from the super-

stitious – they ward off ghosts or bring good luck – to the decidedly more worrisome: they’re code messages advertising drug or gang activity in the area or the handiwork of bullies. Another explanation could be somebody just tossed their shoes up there for the heck of it. Email your theories to newsroom@ cloverdalereporter.com

The Cloverdale Cheetahs beat visitors Coquitlam Packers 9-7 at a home game Sept. 5, with touchdowns by Cheetahs Dante Vatkin, Andrew Steinmann, and Matthew Baxter. Highlights: a one-kick return for a touchdown to take the lead for the win.

Atom Cloverdale Lions blanked the White Rock Titans White 60-zero in a season opener Sept. 5 in White Rock. The Cloverdale squad brought in a total of

eight touchdowns, and four out of four field goals scored by Trey Jones, and two for Terrel Jones. White Rock put up a great fight and had some amazing tackles.
