Best-Selling Cookbook Author Shares Favorite Slow Cooker Recipes f you think that your slow cooker is a tired and antiquated kitchen tool, well past its prime, then think again! In Favorite Slow Cooker Recipes, bestselling culinary expert Bob Warden offers an assortment of recipes, from appetizers to desserts (and everything in between), that are sure to make slow cooking an exciting culinary endeavor like never before. The beauty of the slow cooker is its ability to help any home cook prepare a mouthwatering meal with minimal effort. Over the years, however, slow cookers have unfairly earned the reputation of being devices of very little function, suitable only for soups, stews, and the occasional pot roast. In Favorite Slow Cooker Recipes, Warden takes a new approach to slow cooking, focusing on preparing a vast array of different recipes with the utmost convenience. He explains, “Slow cooking is all about convenience: the convenience of cooking a meal for the entire family in one pot, and the convenience of letting it cook as you go about the rest of your day. That was my goal for the recipes in this book, for the majority of them to be as convenient as they are delicious.” Warden’s Favorite Slow Cooker Recipes presents a variety of over 120 recipes, ultimately dispelling the myth that slow cookers are only sufficient for concocting a handful of dishes. While this tempting new cookbook does contain the usual favorites, such as All Day Chili, Warden presents a wealth of new and innovative recipes that bring the trusty old slow cooker into the 21st century. Many of these dishes are perfect for entertaining, such as the delightful Arugula and Artichoke Dip, while recipes like Brown Sugar Brisket and Honey Sesame Chicken make for a stress-free indoor barbecue. Delicious offerings such as Ravioli Lasagna, Slow Roasted Potatoes, and Banana Pecan Bread Pudding eliminate

the need for keeping a watchful eye on the oven. You can even astound family and friends with a homemade pizza party with Warden’s recipe for Quick Pizza Dough. This new cookbook is an ideal resource for any home cook. All of these recipes can be prepared with a four-quart (or larger) slow cooker, which can already be found in most home kitchens. Better yet, Warden has made a considerable effort to develop these recipes without the use of canned or packaged ingredients, making the task of preparing a healthy and delicious meal with fresh ingredients easier than ever before. Warden also Warden’s “Favorite Slow Cooker Recipes” presents a variety of over 120 recipes, ultimately dispelling the myth that slow cookers are only sufficient for concocting a handful of dishes. includes a plethora of helpful hints and tips for optimal slow cooking as well as a Pantry List, making Favorite Slow Cooker Recipes an indispensable guide for slow cooker users everywhere. Warden has firmly established himself as a pioneer of quick and easy home cooking. His first pressure cooker cookbook sold over 200,000 copies in 2 years, and his second sold over 100,000 copies in a mere 3 months. His previous release, Great Food Fast, has sold an astounding 122,000 copies and was one of the top-selling cookbooks of 2012. Warden partnered with Quail Ridge Press not only because it is the premier southeastern cookbook publisher, but also because of the company’s close relationship with QVC where Warden has been a regular on-air guest for 25 years. Warden has garnered much acclaim for his culinary innovations, earning him the adoration of home cooks nationwide and amassing a loyal fan following. SAY YOU SAW IT IN CITY SUBURBAN NEWS

n Saturday, April 20, 2013, nearly three hundred people gathered aboard the Moshulu at Penn’s Landing for the Charting the Course for the Future Gala & Auction event to celebrate Delaware Valley Friends School’s twenty-fifth year. The event honored founding Head of School Irene McHenry for her vision as a pioneer in educating adolescents who learn differently. All proceeds benefitted the school’s scholarship fund, which provides financial aid to more than one-third of DVFS students. Delaware Valley Friends School was founded by a group of Quaker educators in 1986 to fill the need for a specialized approach to educating bright middle and high school students with specific language-based learning disabilities. The school opened in 1987 with 21 students at Harcum College in Bryn Mawr. Twenty-five years later, with over 500 alumni, Delaware Valley Friends continues to provide a first-class college preparatory education with a rigorous skills-based curriculum that is designed for students with language acquisition and processing issues such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, as well as ADD/ADHD and executive functioning challenges. The Gala event aboard the Moshulu was the centerpiece of a yearlong celebration of the school’s 25th year milestone. Head of School, Pritchard Garrett, welcomed guests and recognized the contributions of three former Heads of School: Irene McHenry, Ruth Greenberger, and Katherine Schantz. Rhonda R. Cohen, Clerk of the Board of Directors, recognized the school’s founders, who “had the foresight, the belief, and the courage to do what was necessary to start a new school for children who learn differently.” Honored guest, Irene McHenry, concluded the evening’s remarks by reflecting on the early days of the school, expressing gratitude to all those who helped the founders’ dream become a thriving reality. Establishment of a new scholarship fund in Mrs. McHenry’s name was announced at the event.

er, until her injury last season, Fischer has been a major contributor for the FCS girls’ soccer team, FSL champions in 2011 and 2012. Fischer looks forward to growing as a player and a student at Pitt. She explains, “I wanted to go to a college where I knew I would get better. I didn’t want to just walk onto the field and start right away. I wanted to be pushed, to be challenged, on the soccer field and in the classroom, and I think that Friends’ Central’s academic rigor and competitive athletics will prepare me well for college.”

Seaport Museum Presents “Tides of Freedom: CFEVA 30th Anniversary Celebration & Benefit African Presence on the Delaware River” ndependence Seaport Museum will debut a new exhibition, Tides of Freedom: African Presence on the Delaware River on Saturday, May 4, 2013. This is the first exhibition in the Seaport Museum’s River of Freedom series. Conceived by a committee of leading AfricanAmerican scholars, and curated by University of Pennsylvania Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations Tukufu Zuberi, this exhibition explores the concept of freedom through the lens of the African and African American experience along the Delaware River. Throughout the exhibition, Zuberi – a practiced storyteller known for engaging a wide variety of audiences as a scholar, professor, and PBS series History Detectives host – will introduce each major section, touching on important themes and crucial artifacts to provide visitors with a dramatic and engaging overview. The exhibition is scheduled to be open through 2015 and is included with regular Museum admission. “The Seaport Museum is proud to be collaborating with Tukufu Zuberi in the creation of this groundbreaking exhibition," said John Brady, President and CEO of Independence Seaport Museum. “Tides of Freedom features many items from the Museum’s own collection that had been hidden from view. It has been a fascinating journey unearthing these artifacts and examining them from a new perspective. The Museum has learned a great deal about the community we live in and is eager to share this with the public.” “Water plays a profound role in understanding African American History,” states Curator Tukufu Zuberi. “It is a source of good, cleanliness, and purity, but has also been associated with gloom, sadness, and death. Using the Delaware River as the site of the African presence in the Philadelphia region allows us to confront the major historical moments in both their glory and gloom.” Tides of Freedom: African Presence on the Delaware River features recently uncovered artifacts from the Museum’s collection, gripping first-person accounts and interactive elements, providing visitors with opportunities for discovery and communication. Using four key moments in Philadelphia’s history representing the themes of Enslavement, Emancipation, Jim Crow, and Civil Rights, Tides of Freedom urges visitors both to bear witness to a story central to Philadelphia and American history, and to think about the changing meaning of “freedom” both historically and in today’s world. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage in an ongoing discussion via social media at several points in the exhibition. The Museum will host an exhibit Opening Celebration on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day begins with a blessing of the river ceremony on the Seaport Museum’s dock (open to the public). A full day of family-friendly activities, music, and crafts celebrating African and African American culture follows. A luncheon for exhibit committee members, sponsors and invited guests will be held on the Museum’s 4th floor, where guests will be able to see a rare portrait of James Forten, on loan from Pennsylvania Historical Society. Dr. Tukufu Zuberi is the Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations and Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He is dedicated to bringing a fresh view of culture and society to the public through various platforms such as guest lecturing at universities, television programs, and interactive social media. His research focuses on Race, African and African Diaspora populations. Dr. Zuberi is the writer and producer of African Independence, an award winning, feature length documentary film project designed to give fresh insight into the continent’s past, present, and future by examining crucial historical turning points in African history from enslavement and colonization by the Europeans, through the two World Wars, The Cold War, and the era of African Independence. Dr. Zuberi is also popularly known as a host on the hit Public Broadcasting System (PBS) series, History Detectives. History Detectives is devoted to exploring the complexities of historical mysteries, searching out the facts, myths and conundrums that connect local folklore, family legends and interesting objects. Currently airing its 10th season, History Detectives regularly shows the way individual objects can serve as a lens into the past. Independence Seaport Museum maintains one of the largest maritime collections in North America, combining more than 25,000 artifacts with hands-on exhibits and large-scale models. In addition to exhibits, the Museum has a traditional boat shop, the Workshop on the Water; the J. Welles Henderson Archives and Library and a concert hall with sound stage quality acoustics. The Museum also includes two National Historic Landmark ships; the Spanish-American War Cruiser Olympia, and the World War II Submarine Becuna. Located at Philadelphia’s Penn’s Landing Waterfront, the Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.phillyseaport.org for information.

UPCOMING SPECIAL ISSUES:

ontgomery County Communi ty College will host its annual Betzwood Silent Film Festival on Saturday, May 11 at 8 p.m. Science Center Theater, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell. Tickets cost $10 general admission and $5 for children under age 10. The films are shown at their original projection speeds with organ accompaniment by Don Kinnier. For info and tickets, visit www.mc3.edu/livelyarts. In its 24th year, the Betzwood Silent Film Festival pays homage to films produced at the Betzwood Motion Picture Studio – founded in 1912 by film pioneer Siegmund Lubin – in what is now West Norriton Township, Montgomery County. This year’s festival will showcase the role of Native Americans in Lubin’s films. Emeritus Professor of History Joseph Eckhardt, who is the country’s premier expert on Siegmund Lubin and his Betzwood Studio, will begin the screening with a lecture on this, and other, topics. The festival will then include the screening of three silent western films, including “Red Eagle’s Love Affair,” “Sweeter Than Revenge,” and the Louis Bennison feature film Actor Harry Myers portraying Red Eagle in one of “Sandy Burke of the U-Bar-U.” Lubin’s films. MCCC is home to the largest known archive of Betzwood artifacts in the world thanks to Eckhardt, is the author of the first Lubin biography, titled The King of the Movies: Film Pioneer Siegmund Lubin, which details Lubin’s transformation from an immigrant optician into the first successful movie mogul, credited with the first attempt at the “mass marketing” of movies. Only 30 Lubin films and fragments have survived the ravages of time, and MCCC is fortunate to have copies of 25 of these in its Betzwood Film Archive. The archive has recently been digitized and is now accessible online at www.mc3betzwood.wordpress.com. Eckhardt also donated a variety of Betzwood artifacts – including manuscripts, photo albums, tape recordings and studio props that he acquired through this extensive research – to the archive, which is housed in a climate controlled space in MCCC’s Brendlinger Library in Blue Bell. To join the Betzwood mailing list, email jeckhard@mc3.edu.
