Storybook Musical Theatre Spins Gold with “Rumpelstiltskin” torybook Musical Theatre, the Abington, PA-based professional Equity children’s theatre company will strike gold with its classic adaptation of the Grimm Brothers’ tale of Rumpelstiltskin. This is the story of a Miller’s daughter, who gets into trouble, and must guess the name of a strange, little man, who has the unusual talent of being able to change straw into gold. The family musical plays at the Bluett Theater of St. Joseph’s University, 56th & Overbrook Avenue in Philadelphia from May 7 to May 11. Tickets are $12 for children and $14 for adults. Spring Fair at Lankenau Medical Center The Women’s Board of Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood will hold its annual Spring Fair on May 9 & 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the main lobby area. Merion Concert Band Spring Concert he Merion Concert Band will conclude its formal concert series on Sunday, April 28 at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr featuring Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue performed by pianist David O’Neill. Other highlights of the program include the always popular Pineapple Poll by Arthur Sullivan, Frank Erickson’s Toccata for Band and Wagner’s Huldigungs marsch. Mr. O’Neill, a graduate of West Chester University, studied music education majoring in trumpet and in 2006 accepted a full scholarship to the University of Florida where he completed a Masters degree in Piano Performance. He is the Instrumental Band Director at Colonial Middle School and has taught in that district for 15 years. Locally, he performs with the Temple Night Owls, A Touch of Brass, and the Montgomery

and plays lead trumpet in the Montgomery County Jazz Band. Mr. O’Neill’s virtuosity will be on display in the Rhapsody in Blue, the immensely popular Gershwin piece that premiered in 1924 at Aeolian Hall in New York under the baton of bandleader Paul Whiteman in a special concert entitled, “An Experiment in Modern Music.� Gershwin was at the piano for the premiere and audience members included John Phillip Sousa and Sergei Rachmaninoff. The Rhapsody begins with a now-famous clarinet glissando, which will be performed by Doug Ohlman, principal clarinet for the Merion Concert Band. Nathan Snyder, conductor, is excited to present this piece. “One of the reasons it is so special is because concert bands rarely get the opportunity to perform it,� he said. “This may be the first and only time that our players get to play it in concert.� Huldigungsmarsch by Richard Wagner, translated as “Homage March,� is another piece that is not often performed. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth and the Merion Concert Band has performed two of his works this season, the first being Trauermusik, Wagner’s band arrangement of excerpts from Carl Maria von Weber’s Euryanthe. The Huldigungsmarsch is “deceptively simple but complex and challenging,� said Mr. Snyder. “A lot of people think of Sousa when they think of a march, but this is completely different.� The April 28 concert is free and open to the public. Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts STREET FAIR, April 27 G et ready PIFA 2013 lovers – the Street Fair is back! As with the inaugural Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts in 2011, the finale of PIFA 2013 brings artistry and family fun full circle, in the daylong outdoor experience known as the PIFA STREET FAIR. The culminating event of the 31-day festival takes place Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Kimmel Center will once again close Broad Street from Chestnut to South Street for a traditional Street Fair – a throwback to a carnivalesque atmosphere with interactive family fun festivities, fantastical and unique street performers, visual excitement, attractions and music for all ages with no gate charge. More than 60 vendors will be providing a variety of food, artisan’s work and exhibits. Garces’ Guapos Tacos, Anthony’s Italian Ice, Parc and the Surf and Turf Truck and of course, popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream and hot dogs are some of the food offerings. This time around, traveling musicians will perform along the street – an assortment of jazz, blue grass and Americana, Brazilian music – roaming through the crowds. Visitors, wherever they wander, will encounter magical and wondrous surprises and fantastical characters. Crisscrossing the history of time from the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth to the era of robotics and technology, the 2013 Street Fair highlights include some favorites from the first Street Fair– the return of the Giant Ferris Wheel ($5 pp); the fascinating Fountain Lady—as well as a generous sprinkling of Bagpipers, Monks, Knights, Give and Take Jugglers, and Post-Apocalyptic Stilt-Walkers. Times are 12 noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. Broad Street will close on Friday April 26 at 7 p.m. from Chestnut Street to South Street. Cross streets will remain open but drivers will not be able to turn onto Broad Street. Cross Streets will close on Saturday April 27 at 5 a.m. – including Sansom, Moravian, Chancellor, Locust, Bach, and Spruce Streets from 13th to 15th Street. Chestnut, Walnut, Pine, Lombard, and South Street will remain open but it is recommended that drivers avoid these streets because of congested traffic. Attendees are encouraged to use alternate transportation if possible or if driving into Center City, to consider parking at garages located off of 13th or 15th Streets. The Quartet ushers in the spring with a romantic musical program at Amado Hall, University of Pennsylvania on May 5, at 7 p.m. The Quartet will also perform the String Quartet in D Major by Alexander Borodin, thought to be one of the most melodically gifted composers of Tsarist Russia. Dr. Nocella will speak briefly on Borodin's life and music during the concert. The String Quartet No. 3 in Green is the third of the Quartet Colors Series by this highly regarded, world renowned Philadelphia composer. While Nocella’s String Quartet No. 1 in Blue is cool and jazzy, his String Quartet No. 2 in Red, passionate and fiery, in contrast, Nocella’s String Quartet No. 3 in Green, is poetic, episodic, and bucolic, evocative of emotions listeners may associate with the natural world. Sharing the program, Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2 in D Major, includes two memorable, romantic melodies, later incorporated into the 1950s Broadway musical, Kismet: “And this is My Beloved” and “Baubles, Bangles, and Beads.” Nocella, a long time Main Line resident, is the former music director/conductor (1993-7) of the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. He has also composed for several choreographers and ballet companies, including Benjamin Harkarvy and Lar Lubovitch at the Pennsylvania Ballet Company, Baryshnikov at the American Ballet Theater, and Jean Paul Comelin in Milwaukee and at the Swedish State Theater Ballet, Malmo. He has written for and also conducted the Philadelphia Concerto Soloists, who performed his violin concerto. In 1996, The Green Violinist, based on art of Marc Chagall, also a Holocaust memorial, was premiered by the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, Peter has written numerous commissioned works: In 2000, Missa Brevis was performed at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II. For the 75th anniversary of the American Swedish Historical Museum, in 2001, he composed Eight Candles in the Darkness. Rose Tree Concerto by The Commissioning Project of Rochester, New York followed in 2003. Between 2005-7, Nocella composed Poquessing Violas for four violas, and two orchestral

tone poems: War Prelude and The Romance of My Viola. After completing the commission, Psalm 98, by the Nazareth Chorale in 2008, he then in 2009-10, finished his Symphony No. 2 and Symphony No. 3. His String Quartet No. 1 in Blue premiered at the Meiravi Quartet’s debut, April 9, 2011; String Quartet No. 2 in Red, in fall, 2011. Longtime friends and professional colleagues, Meiravi Quartet members have impressive individual resumes and performance backgrounds, which they each bring enthusiastically to the ensemble, contributing to the Meiravi’s vibrant sound and rich musicality. Each member has both outstanding international as well as local credentials. In addition to Peter Nocella on viola, the Meiravi Quartet members include violinists, Igor Szwec and Greg Teperman, and cellist, Vivian Barton Dozor. Individually they have performed under the batons of such world class conductors as Eugene Ormandy, Leopold Stokowski, Eric Leinsdorf, Lorin Maazel, Ricardo Muti, Charles Dutoit, Yehudi Menhuin, JoAnn Falletta, Ignat Solzhenitzyn, and Max Rudolph, and for all of the major Philadelphia musical institutions including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Ballet, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, American Society for Ancient Instruments, and the Philly Pops. Igor Szwec, who soloed with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age 12, was a member of the prestigious National Arts Orchestra in Ottawa, Ottawa’s Constable Quartet, and has become a highly regarded recording studio concertmaster for popular artists. Szwec also has performed with such notable musicians as Bernard Greenhouse, Menahem Pressler, and Denys Koronzai. He studied violin with Jaro Megasuik and Karen Tuttle. Igor, for many years was a member of the highly regarded Concerto Soloists. He performs regularly with such ensembles as the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, Academy of Vocal Arts, Orchestra 2001, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Ballet Company, and Philly Pops. Gregory Teperman’s musicality, sense of style, and joie de vivre is evident whenever he performs. Among his credits include his performing with the Moscow Symphony, Moldavian Philharmonic, Kirov Ballet, and the Trenton Symphony, for whom he was assistant concert master. He has, as well, performed for such diverse artists as Pavarotti, Carreras, Domingo, Joshua Bell, Hillary Hahn, Josh Groban, and Frank Sinatra. Among others, he has recorded with Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Will Smith, Justin Timberlake, and Rosemary Clooney. Currently a member of the AVA and the Philly Pops Orchestras, he is also concertmaster for Broadway at the Academy and for the Walnut Street Theatre. Vivian Barton Dozor, a Curtis graduate and Princeton University faculty member, performs with many groups throughout the city, including Pennsylvania Ballet, Opera Orchestra of Philadelphia, and The Society for Ancient Instruments, of which she is music director. The students read and listened to haiku poems, and then wrote their own poems under the cherry blossoms in Lansdowne’s Sycamore Park and at the school. They painted paper lanterns to include in LFS’s Silent auction and then painted other lanterns to keep. The students played Jan Ken Po (Rock, Paper, Scissors) and learned Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Japanese. They even experienced lunch beneath the cherry blossoms! Mrs. Annette Loutrel, faculty moderator of Devon Prep’s chapter, welcomed everyone to the ceremony and introduced Headmaster Rev. James J. Shea, Sch. P. who opened with a prayer. Students presented a background of the SNHS, explained the requirements for membership and the goals and accomplishments of the chapter. Fourteen candles, representing the light of learning, were lit during the Candle Lighting Ceremony. Devon Prep Science Department Chair, Mr. Roger Mecouch, served as the guest speaker. GET READY FOR CAMP Empty Bowls Supper Raises Hunger Awareness

n Sunday, April 14, from 5-7 p.m., The Haverford School and Agnes Irwin School Student Community Service boards hosted the sixth biannual Empty Bowls Supper in response to the needs of the hungry in the local community. More than 400 students, parents, faculty, staff, and families shared a supper of soup and bread in an ongoing awareness effort to support the community-based hunger organizations that the two schools work with throughout the year. This year’s event raised approximately $10,000 to be shared by the schools’ hunger partner organizations. The hunger organizations include: SHARE (which collects, sorts and distributes food locally), PALM food cupboard in Ardmore, Greater Philadelphia Food Bank/Philabundance, the Life Center of Eastern Delaware County, MANNA, Ardmore’s St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Food Cupboard. Five authors – Augustus Cileone, Sandy Carey Cody, KB Inglee, Donna Huston Murray, and Elena Santangelo – will answer questions about writing and publishing and talk about making the transition from print to e-books. Augustus (Gus) Cileone won the Dark Oak Mystery Contest sponsored by Oak Tree Press, which published his first novel A Lesson in Murder. He won first prize for fiction at the Philadelphia Writers’ Conference in 2007 and a short story award at the same conference in 2010. His newest novel, Feast or Famine, is a satire that takes place in South Philadelphia in the 1960s and 1970s. Sandra Carey Cody is the author of the Jennie Connors/Riverview Manor mystery series, the standalone mystery Love and Not Destroy, and a collection of non-mystery short stories. KB Inglee works as an interpreter of Colonial and New Republic periods at two local living-history museums. Her short stories, mostly detective fiction including the recent Joseph’s Captivity, are set in 18th and 19th century America. Donna Huston Murray is the author of seven books in the Ginger Barnes Main Line mystery series. Her work can also be found in the award-winning book, The Fine Art of Murder, Montgomery County Community College invites the community to its Spring Dance Concert on April 26 and Spring Performing Arts Showcase performances on April 29 and May 1 and the Lethal Ladies I and II anthologies. Summer Stage is in their 38th season, the Shooting Stars in their 15th and is directed by Kevin Dietzler and Abby The Summer Stage Shooting Stars ensemble will perform Shunskis, choreographers, April 29, at Symphony Square, in Bala Cynwyd. and Dan Matarazzo, Musical Director, are ready for their most unforgettable year to date, beginning with this upcoming appearance at Symphony Square. The Summer Stage Shooting Stars is an ensemble of talented young people between the ages of 14 and 19 who were selected by audition from more than 700 members of the Upper Darby Summer Stage program. A Shooting Stars show features outstanding singing, exciting choreography and the energy and smiles of 30 talented young people. Billie Jean King, Holly Hunter and Chris Evert will gather May 18 at the home of Vahan and Danielle Gureghian in Gladwyne for an evening reception and moderated conversation, and the opportunity for guests to bid on some incredible silent auction items, such as Billie Jean King’s Wimbledon Center Court seats. Earlier that day, there will also be a Pro Am featuring Chris Evert. This event is produced by the Philadelphia Freedoms to raise money for the Philadelphia non-profit Assistance in Healthcare, which helps lessen the financial burden of cancer patients and their families. Individual tickets to the reception are $250 per person, and tickets to the Pro Am, which include access to the reception, start at $3,500.
