usan Stefanski was a 47-year-old mother of three working as a secretary for Villanova University when she first applied a paint brush to a creative act. Now, 13 years later, hardly a day goes by when she isn’t using one expressly for that purpose. A fulltime, award-winning painter, Stefanski’s work has been featured in scores of solo and group exhibits. On April 26, Stefanski returns to Villanova with “Nature’s Gifts,” a solo exhibit of large and medium-size landscapes and floral arrangements in oil. A reception to meet the Havertown, PA, artist will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. in the campus Art Gallery in the Connelly Center. Refreshments will be served. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. It was in an after-work class taught by Villanova art instructor Br. Jack Stagliano, O.S.A. In the Fireside Gallery, Potsic will exhibit “Made In China.” Her photographic series of trees in the throes of seasonal change utilizes the aesthetics of traditional Chinese scroll paintings to focus attention on China’s current political, economic, and social conflict. GET READY FOR CAMP Waldron Mercy Students Named Region 2 Winners in the 2013 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Competition

From left – Charlie Giunta from Toshiba, Krishnan Raj, Antoine Adson, Lindsay McBride, and Liz Meyer, science specialist, at the Award Ceremony held at Waldron Mercy Academy. aldron Mercy Academy second grade students, Krishnan Raj, Antoine Adson, Lindsay McBride, were recently named as Region 2 winners in the 2013 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Competition for their Eating Account Tracking (E.A.T.) system which helps students make better food choices. Using the E.A.T. technology, students would slide their meal trays under a bar code reader that will access a database of food nutrition values. If the meal or snacks are nutritionally well-balanced a green light will shine, and if the meal is unbalanced a red light will shine. Students will learn to recognize good eating habits and improve their overall health using E.A.T. Each of the regional winners will now move on to the national phase of the competition, where they will compete to be named among the eight national winner teams, including four first place and four second place winners. Students received their own Toshiba HD camcorders, and WMA received a Toshiba laptop computer. To participate in the national phase of competition, students must design a website, including a one to two minute video, and build a prototype of the E.A.T. technology. Underwritten by Toshiba and administered by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), Toshiba ExploraVision is the world’s largest K–12 science and technology competition, challenging students to work in teams and design innovative technologies that could exist in 20 years.

“Here Today and Gone Tomorrow,” Oil on Canvas, by Susan Stefanski, in the exhibit “Nature’s Gifts,” at the Villanova University Art Gallery, April 26 through June 8. find God’s beauty. It’s everywhere. All you have to do is look and see. Concerned about suburbia’s vanishing open spaces, she is drawn to the farm fields, the animals that graze upon them, and the 18th and 19th century stone barns and farmhouses that line Radnor-Goshen Road. Farther afield, the Jersey shore serves as setting for many of her serene, soft-hued canvasses of wetlands and seaside sunrises and sunsets. Stefanski’s engagement with nature is reverential: “Feeling the wind and watching the grass bend to it, seeing how the changing light plays on the landscape, the beautiful feeling of being outside: It’s all so joyful.” Being a ‘plein air’ painter has its hazards, which is why many artists choose to paint their landscapes indoors from photographs and recall. Rain has wetted more than one of Stefanski’s canvasses, wind has toppled her easel and propelled flies and other debris into her wet paint. Cold has turned her oils to goo. A dog once landed on her palette. Small inconveniences: “Don’t try to wipe whatever it is off. Let it dry on the canvas and then just brush it off,” the artist advises. Stefanski doesn’t mind people stopping to watch her at work at her easel. Young people are always welcome, the younger the better. Often, she will hand a child a brush with an invitation to help her with whatever she is painting. “I was 47 when I picked up my first paint brush. You never know when inspiration will strike.” In addition to oils, she paints in watercolor and pastels, is a portraitist and painter of sacred icons. A portion of monies raised from her Villanova Exhibit will go to the hunger awareness program Fiorenza’s Food For Friends (F4). The Chester County-based not-for-profit organization gathers perishable and non-perishable foods donated by restaurants, universities and schools and delivers them to homeless shelters free of charge. Stefanski’s work has won the People’s Choice Award at the Kutztown (PA) Plein Air Festival; the Grand Prize, Art of the Garden, at the 2011 Havertown Township Library Exhibit; and the 2010 Suzanne M. Kaminski Memorial Award. Among her memberships and active involvements are the Delaware Valley Art League, and the Wayne and Main Line Art Centers. The Villanova University Art Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. into most evenings. For extended and weekend hours, and information, contact the Art Gallery at 610-519-4612. Selected works for “Nature’s Gifts” Exhibit by Susan Stefanski may be previewed on the gallery’s website at www.artgallery.villanova.edu. The Exhibit continues to June 8.

The Philadelphia Singers Presents Philadelphia Premiere of “Tchiakovsky and Schnittke” Sunday, April 28, 3 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul he Philadelphia Singers’ Music Director, David Hayes, will conduct a Philadelphia premiere featuring compositions of Tchaikovsky and Schnittke. The performance will move and intrigue audiences on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 3 p.m. at the stunning Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul at 18th and the Ben Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia. Assistant Conductor Brian Schkeeper will conduct a pre-concert panel discussion about Tchaikovsky, Schnittke, and Russian choral music, which will be held at 12:30 p.m. Spanning 100 years of Russian choral music, this concert presents two different worlds of sacred composition, one composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, his Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and the other a century later by Alfred Schnittke, his Choir Concerto. One an insider, the other an outcast, one composer commissioned by the Tsar, and the other composed under communist rule, while struggling to achieve artistic freedom. Hear why these pieces are so similar yet so uniquely different. This is the first time the works have been presented together in Philadelphia and it is also The Philadelphia Singers inaugural performance at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, a beautiful example of RomanCorinthian architecture. “I am thrilled to welcome one of Philadelphia’s finest choral ensembles to the Concerts at the Cathedral Basilica Series. The combination of the Philadelphia Singers and the sonic splendor of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul will be an amazing combination and a musical extravaganza not to be missed!” – John Romeri, the Director of Music at The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. Tickets range from $10 - $40. Group rates are available. For tickets and information, call 215-751-9494, or visit www.philadelphiasingers.org. (Tickets cannot be purchased at the The Cathedral Basilica Box Office except on day of concert starting 1 hour prior to the performance.) The Cathedral Basilica is located at 18th and Benjamin Franklin Parkway in downtown Philadelphia. There is limited free parking with entrance on 17th St. between Vine and Race Streets.

ymphony Square Senior Living in Bala Cynwyd invited the whole community to join them in a celebration of the Passover holiday, as residents, their families and guests welcomed neighbors to gather with them for a Seder and traditional service on Friday, March 29 under the leadership of Rabbi Joseph Domosh. As Symphony Square is a brand new senior living residence, this Seder was the first for the senior community and represents Symphony Square’s eagerness to establish deep and lasting relationships with residents in the surrounding neighborhoods.

UPenn History Presents: “Bismarck, Anti-Semitism and the Tragedy of German Jewry.” In 1880 the Prussian Lower House, the Landtag, debated the ‘Jewish Question’ as if thousands of German Jews had suddenly become no longer German. The wave of anti-semitic agitation and publications reached the highest level of society. Bismarck let it all happen and took no steps to counter the movement. Why he acted as he did in spite of his good relations with many prominent Jews shines a lurid light on Bismarck’s political tactics and marks the moment when the German Jewish community no longer felt safe. Jonathan Steinberg is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor of Modern European History at the University of Pennsylvania, former Chair of the Department of History, and is an Emeritus Fellow, Trinity Hall, Cambridge. His most recent book, “Bismarck: A Life.” RSVP at http://jonathansteinbergbismarck.eventbrite.com/. Monday, April 22, 2013, 8 p.m. at the Parkway Central Library, 1901 Vine St., Philadelphia, PA 19103. Call 215-686-5415 for info.
