Local Jews Address Relevance of Judaism in Modern Society he Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) will present To Be a Jew in the Free World: Jewish Identity Through the Lens of Modern History the institute’s new six-session Winter 2014 course that will begin during the week of February 2. Rabbi Moshe Brennan of Chabad of Penn Wynne will conduct the six course sessions at 7:30 p.m. on Mondays from February 3 till March 10 at the Kaiserman JCC, 45 Haverford Rd, Wynnewood PA 19096. “A recent PEW study exposed that 22% of Jews identify as ‘Jews with no religion’ and for many, this is a clear indication that the landscape of Jewish identity is changing rapidly said Rabbi Zalman Abraham of JLI’s headquarters in Brooklyn, New York. “Our objective with this course is to initiate a discussion about Jewish identity, why it is still relevant, and what we can do to make it something our children and grandchildren will cherish for generations to come. In To Be a Jew in the Free World, participants will confront questions of allegiance and issues in which Judaism and contemporary society appear to be in conflict. Looking into the past, the course explores a series of fascinating case studies, such as arguments made in the 1650s to convince Oliver Cromwell to readmit Jews to England, and how Ulysses S. Grant’s 1862 expulsion of the Jews became a defining issue in his presidential election. To be a Jew in the Free World is unique in that it will likely represent the first nationwide effort to bring the Jewish community together to address these important issues since the findings of the PEW report were released in October of 2013. “The subject of identity is close to the hearts of many in our Jewish community, yet it’s a subject that is rarely discussed nowadays. said Rabbi Moshe Brennan, the local JLI instructor in Wynnewood. “The course provides a rare opportunity to address this issue that will benefit the wider community, and we invite everyone to attend. Like all JLI programs, To Be a Jew in the Free World is designed to appeal to people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship. Interested students may call 610-529-9011 or visit www.ChabadPennWynne.org for registration and other course-related information. JLI courses are presented in Wynnewood in conjunction with Chabad of Penn Wynne.

Tri-County Concerts Presents Stefan Jackiw & Anna Polonsky Continued from front page

the front page of The Times. It was reported that a 14 year old violinist took the London music world by storm. In 2013 Jackiw performed the Mendelssohn Concerto with the Detroit Symphony and with the Royal Philharmonic under Charles Dutoit. In 2010-2011 he played with the Philadelphia Orchestra, led by Marin Alsop. More than once during his young career he has been called upon on short notice to fill in for other noted violinists in 2002 for Pamela Frank with the Baltimore Symphony. This led to a continuing relationship with that orchestra, which included a tour of Japan in 2002 and a performance at the Winter Arts Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia a year later. Among other American orchestras with which he has collaborated are the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony. Jackiw performed several high profile chamber music recitals. This past summer he appeared at a number of music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival and Seattle Chamber Music Society. Born in 1985 to physicist parents of Korean and German descent, he began playing the violin at the age of four. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University as well as an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory. In 2002 he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. He makes his home in New York City.

Anna Polonsky is widely in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. She has appeared with The Moscow Virtuosi, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Columbus Symphony The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and many others. She is regularly invited to perform chamber music at festivals such as Marlboro, and at Bargemusic in New York City. In 2006 she took part in the European Broadcasting Union’s project to record and broadcast all of Mozart’s keyboard sonatas and in 2007 she performed a solo recital a Carnegie Hall. Polonsky made her solo piano debut at the age of 7 at the Special Central Music School in Moscow, Russia. She emigrated to the United States in 1990 and received her Bachelor of Music diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music where she studied with Peter Serkin. She earned her Master’s Degree from the Juilliard School. Polonsky was a recipient of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and in 2011 the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award. In addition to performing, she serves on the piano faculty of Vassar College. For over seventy-two years the Tri-County Concerts Association has served the Chester, Delaware and Montgomery County communities by fostering the performance and appreciation of the highest quality solo and ensemble chamber music. Ticket prices are kept low to enable families to share a rich cultural experience.

“Rocking the Cradle,” 2003, cradle with acrylic, 56 x 27 x 30 1/2 in., by Joyce Kozloff. oyce Kozloff, a New Jersey native and a major figure in both the Pattern and Decoration and the Feminist art movements of the 1970s, debuts her solo exhibition in New Jersey at Rowan University Art Gallery. Running from January 21 through March 15, the exhibition is welcomed with a gallery talk by the artist and reception on Wednesday, January 29 at 5 p.m. Cradles to Conquests: Mapping American Military History is a selection of Kozloff’s work completed between 2000 and 2010 that reference imagined and historical military events. The works utilize collage, cartography and mapping as a narrative extension of Joyce’s decorative arts sensibilities and her work as a feminist and anti-war activist. Ironically, Kozloff’s mapping series makes use of a practice once widely viewed as “gender-specific” – appliqué, weaving, pattern, decorative – to challenge and question the authority of a patriarchal, militaristic culture. Curated by gallery director Mary Salvante, the works selected for this exhibition focuses directly on maps and imagery that dramatize the emergence of the US through the lens of its military engagements and exploits in the name of expansion and national interests. The exhibition features several of Kozloff’s iconic pieces such as Targets, a walk in globe that utilizes official tactical pilotage charts in which to depicts all of the US bombing sites around the world since 1945, Boys Art Series, which collages innocent, youthful drawing done by the artist’s son with nautical maps, and Rocking the Cradle, a larger than life size baby cradle with a map of Mesopotamia, the seat of cultivation, and to this day a very sensitive location politically. Kozloff began to focus on public art in 1979. She expanded the scale of her installations and the accessibility of her art to reach a wider audience and, since the early 1990s, has been utilizing mapping as a device for expressing her interests in history, culture, politics and the decorative and popular arts. She has had solo exhibitions at the DC Moore Gallery in New York; Trout Gallery at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania; Spazio Thetis in Venice, Italy; and Regina Gouger Miller Gallery of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, National Museum of Women in the Arts, MoMA P.S.1, Vancouver Art Gallery and The Jewish Museum in New York. Recently, her work was included in the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art’s The Map as Art. The works included in the exhibition are courtesy of the artist and DC Moore gallery and several private collectors. This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Admission to the gallery, lecture and reception is free and open to the public. Regular gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with extended hours on Wednesdays to 7 p.m.); and Saturday, 12 to 5 p.m. For information, call 856256-4521 or visit www.rowan.edu/artgallery. Rowan University Art Gallery is located on the lower level of Westby Hall on the university campus, Route 322 in Glassboro, NJ.

Valentin Radu Conducts the Vox Renaissance Consort in

Renaissance Candlemas enaissance Candlemas will be presented on Friday, February 7 at 8 p.m. in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in central Philadelphia, located at 18th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Tickets are priced at $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors and $10 for children and students. Tickets may be purchased online at www.VoxAmaDeus.org, or by calling 610-688-2800 during normal business hours, or at the door beginning at 7:15 p.m. on February 7. Lushly costumed professional vocalists and period-instrument minstrels perform Renaissance Candlemas—glorious music from the Renaissance and early Baroque periods, celebrating the time of the liturgical year when winter begins to give way to spring. Conducted by Valentin Radu, twelve musical compositions by twelve renowned composers will be presented, including settings of Agnus Dei by Andrea Gabrieli, Alleluia by Hans Leo Hassler, Hodie Beata Virgo Maria by Peter Philips, Nun danket alle Gott by Johann Pachelbel, Nunc dimittis by William Byrd, and Henry Purcell’s Rejoice in the Lord Alway. What is Candlemas? Candlemas is one of the most ancient feasts of the Christian Church, observed forty days after Christmas. Often called The Feast of the Presentation, it is celebrated on February 2 (or by some denominations, on the Sunday between January 28 and February 3). As defined in the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, the word Candlemas is derived from the Middle English word candelmasse, which in turn came from the Old English word candelmæsse, and which itself was built on the words candel + mæsse (candle + mass or feast). The word Candlemas appears in usage before the 12th century, with the term “Candle Mass” also used.

R

Candlemas commemorates the Presentation of the Christ Child in the Temple in Jerusalem, as well as the Ritual Purification of Mary as prescribed by Mosaic Law (for example, see Exodus 13:12-15 or Leviticus 12). Of this Presentation, the Gospel of Luke (2:29-32) relates that Simeon the Righteous blessed the Babe with the words famed today as “Nunc dimittis” (“Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word.”) A salient and popular feature of the Candlemas religious service is the blessing of beeswax candles and their procession through the church. Historically, Candlemas is believed by some scholars to have roots in numerous pre-Christian European winter celebrations and rites observed in early February. From among these sprang a famous Pennsylvania Dutch tradition that is observed every February 2nd. VoxAmaDeus was founded in 1987 by the Romanian born, European- and Juilliard-trained conductor/pianist/organist, Dr. Valentin Radu. The ensemble’s name can be translated as Voice of the Love of God. VoxAmaDeus comprises three interlocking ensembles. One of these, Vox Renaissance Consort, features professional singers, attired in lush period costumes, and accompanied by minstrels playing period instruments. The artists and music of Vox Renaissance Consort transport the listener back in musical time with enchanting and intimate concerts featuring musical gems from the European High Renaissance and Early Baroque artistic eras (ca. 1550 to 1675). The Consort has charmed audiences, internationally and locally, with Italian madrigals, English fa-la-las, languid love ballads, hauntingly beautiful compositions on liturgical texts, and jaunty dance-based songs. Vox Renaissance Consort has released a magnificent sounding compact disc, Renaissance Noël, on the Lyrichord Early Music Series.

5th Grade Artists Celebrate the Dream of Martin Luther King, Jr. Over the past several months, six students in the Perelman Jewish Day School Forman Center 5th grade, along with their art teacher, Nina Kohn, have been working hard to design and create a large mural for the city of Philadelphia’s Martin Luther King Mural Arts project. This project was one of the many special events leading up to the annual MLK Day of Service January 20, 2014. This year’s theme commemorated the 60th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education. After studying about this historic United States Supreme Court decision to de-segregation our nation’s public schools – Tamar Azulay, Allison Goldstein, Sarah Miller, Tevah Nesvisky, Maya Rosenthal, and Nicole Zappin worked collaboratively, brainstorming ideas, drawing sketches, and ultimately producing a 6 ft. x 5 ft. cloth mural. The students had the honor of presenting their creation to area dignitaries, including Philadelphia mayor, Michael Nutter, at the the 18th Annual Greater Philadelphia MLK Day of Service Kickoff News Conference at Girard College on Wednesday, January 8.
