New Study at Temple Shows Extra Virgin Olive Oil Staves Off Multiple Forms of Dementia in Mice oosting brain function is key to staving off the effects of aging. And if there was one thing every person should consider doing right now to keep their brain young, it is to add extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) to their diet, according to research by scientists at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM). EVOO is a superfood, rich in cell-protecting antioxidants and known for its multiple health benefits, including helping put the brakes on diseases linked to aging, most notably cardiovascular disease. Previous LKSOM research on mice also showed that EVOO preserves memory and protects the brain against Alzheimer’s disease. In a new study in mice published online in the journal Aging Cell, LKSOM scientists show that yet another group of agingrelated diseases can be added to that list – tauopathies, which are characterized by the gradual buildup of an abnormal form of a protein called tau in the brain. This process leads to a decline in mental function, or dementia. The findings are the first to suggest that EVOO can defend against a specific type of mental decline linked to tauopathy known as frontotemporal dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is itself one form of dementia. It primarily affects the hippocampus – the memory storage center in the brain. Frontotemporal dementia affects the areas of the brain near the forehead and ears. Symptoms typically emerge between ages 40 and 65 and include changes in personality and behavior, difficulties with language and writing, and eventual deterioration of memory and ability to learn from prior experience. Senior investigator Domenico Praticò, MD, Scott Richards North Star Foundation Chair for Alzheimer’s Research, Professor in the Departments of Pharmacology and Microbiology, and Director of the Alzheimer’s Center at Temple at LKSOM, describes the new work as supplying another piece in the story about EVOOs ability to ward off cognitive decline and to protect the junctions where neurons come together to exchange information, which are known as synapses. “EVOO has been a part of the human diet for a very long time and has many benefits for health, for reasons that we do not yet fully understand,” he said. “The realization that EVOO can protect the brain against different forms of dementia gives us an opportunity to learn more about the mechanisms through which it acts to support brain health.” In previous work using a mouse model in which animals were destined to develop Alzheimer’s disease, Dr. Praticò’s team showed that EVOO supplied in the diet protected young mice from memory and learning impairment as they aged. Most notably, when the researchers looked at brain tissue from mice fed EVOO, they did not see features typical of cognitive decline, particularly amyloid plaques – sticky proteins that gum up communication pathways between neurons in the brain. Rather, the animals’ brains looked normal. The team’s new study shows that the same is true in the case of mice engineered to develop tauopathy. In these mice, normal tau protein turns defective and accumulates in the brain, forming harmful tau deposits, also called tangles. Tau deposits, similar to amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s disease, block neuron communication and thereby impair thinking and memory, resulting in frontotemporal dementia. Tau mice were put on a diet supplemented with EVOO at a young age, comparable to about age 30 or 40 in humans. Six months later, when mice were the equivalent of age 60 in humans, tauopathy-prone animals experienced a 60 percent reduction in damaging tau deposits, compared to littermates that were not fed EVOO. Animals on the EVOO diet also performed better on memory and learning tests than animals deprived of EVOO. When Dr. Praticò and colleagues examined brain tissue from EVOO-fed mice, they found that improved brain function was likely facilitated by healthier synapse function, which in turn was associated with greater-than-normal levels of a protein known as complexin-1. Complexin-1 is known to play a critical role in maintaining healthy synapses. Dr. Praticò and colleagues now plan to explore what happens when EVOO is fed to older animals that have begun to develop tau deposits and signs of cognitive decline, which more closely reflects the clinical scenario in humans. “We are particularly interested in knowing whether EVOO can reverse tau damage and ultimately treat tauopathy in older mice,” Dr. Praticò added. Other researchers contributing to the study include Elisabetta Lauretti, Miroslav Nenov, and Ozlem Dincer, Alzheimer’s Center, LKSOM; and Luigi Iuliano, UOC Internal Medicine, ICOT University Hospital & Sapienza University of Rome. The research was funded in part by a grant from the North Star Charitable Foundation and by Sapienza University grant RM #11816436DA301.

R ED C ROSS M AKES I T E ASY AND R EWARDING TO S AVE L IVES THIS H OLIDAY S EASON he American Red Cross urges eligible donors to be the lifeline for patients in need this holiday season by making an appointment to give blood or platelets. While helping to save lives is likely motivation enough, those who come out to give Nov. 18 - Dec. 18 will also receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Suburban Propane. Still need reasons to fit lifesaving blood donation into busy holiday schedules? Try these three: • It’s quick and easy to find a convenient blood drive. Search for drives by ZIP code and make an appointment to donate using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, online at www.redcrossblood.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or by enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. • Donors can save time by completing a RapidPass®. The entire donation process only takes about an hour, but donors can save time with RapidPass. Pre-donation reading and health history questions can be completed online to save about 15 minutes. • Donors will get important health information. Donors receive a mini-health screening to help determine eligibility that includes blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin readings. First-time donors will also find out their blood type soon after donating. Some Upcoming Area Blood Drives • Bala Cynwyd – 12/17/2019: 1:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., The Woman’s Club of Bala Cynwyd, 382 Bala Ave. • Bryn Mawr – 12/16/2019: 1:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., Ludington Public Library, 5 S. Chester Pike. • Havertown – 12/13/2019: 1:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., Manoa Community Church, 153 N. Eagle Road. • Havertown – 12/17/2019: 1 p.m. - 6 p.m., Bon Air Fire Company, 541 Royal Ave. • Lansdowne – 12/11/2019: 1:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 140 N. Lansdowne Ave. As schedules fill with holiday parties, shopping and fun with friends and family, many blood and platelet donors delay giving. Unfortunately, that may lead to delays in treatments for patients relying on blood. Right now, there is a critical need for type O blood donors. The Red Cross is thanking those who come to give Nov. 18 - Dec. 18 with a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Suburban Propane. (Restrictions apply; see amazon.com/gclegal. From left – Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Chairman Wayne W. Grafton, Bryn Mawr Hospital President Andi Gilbert, System Vice President Behavioral Health – Main Line Health Michelle Mullany, and Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Senior Co-Chair Darlene DiGorio and Co-Chair Eileen Devine celebrate the presentation of a $375,000 donation to support the expansion of the hospital’s Behavioral Health Unit. he Devon Horse Show and Country Fair kicked off its new $2 million pledge to Bryn Mawr Hospital with a donation of $375,000, proceeds from the 2019 show. Senior CoChair Darlene DiGorio, Co-Chair Eileen Devine and incoming Chair Buttons Corkhill along with both members of the Horse Show and Foundation Boards will present the check to Bryn Mawr Hospital President Andi Gilbert, System Vice President Behavioral Health – Main Line Health Michelle Mullany and other members of the hospital community during a reception at the hospital on Friday, December 6 at 5:30 p.m. The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair’s new pledge will support the Behavioral Health Unit at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Patients with a wide variety of psychiatric conditions, including depression and anxiety, are treated by a multidisciplinary team at Bryn Mawr Hospital, which has the inpatient behavioral health care unit within Main Line Health. “Bryn Mawr Hospital and Main Line Health are committed to caring for patients and families in need of behavioral health services,” said Mullany. “Devon’s support for this project means the exceptional clinical care that our behavioral health inpatient unit provides can be offered to even more patients, further addressing this need for all communities served by Main Line Health.” With support from the Behavioral Health Fund, Bryn Mawr Hospital will expand its behavioral health unit to 40 beds, doubling its current size, and create modern facilities that are best suited to this vulnerable patient population. This increased capacity will further enable BMH to expand its overall scope of care, beyond general psychiatry, to include additional patient populations such as those with a Dual Diagnosis, those with both mental health and substance abuse disorders. “Our partnership with Bryn Mawr Hospital continues to have a positive impact on the health and well-being of residents of the Main Line and beyond,” added Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Chairman Wayne W. Grafton. “We are proud to have renewed our pledge and commitment to our community’s premiere hospital.” To date, the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair has contributed over $15 million to fund innovations at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
