NEW COMMUNITY WRITERS SERIES Continued from front page

Pinkney, a Germantown native, has illustrated more than 100 children’s books. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Caldecott Medal, five New York Times “Best Illustrated Books” distinctions and five Coretta Scott King Awards. Pinkney has had over 30 one-man exhibitions; Witness: The Art of Jerry Pinkney appeared at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from June 28 - September 22, 2013. His most recent book, The Tortoise and the Hare – which received a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly for its “magnificently illustrated version of this famous fable,” lending “the race the excitement of an Olympic event” – was published in October. On November 19, Pinkney will discuss his memories of Germantown and his work as an artist and storyteller of folktales, fairy tales and African American history. Historic Germantown is partnering with the Friends Free Library on the event, one of two in the series’ inaugural year; novelist/musician Wesley Stace, author of the forthcoming Wonderkid, is slated to appear in March. “The Friends Free Library Community Writers Series represents the heart of Germantown Friends School: a diverse, well-read community engaged in conversations about art, writing, history and the connections that make us human,” shares Chris Singler, head of the English department and member of the Writers Series committee. “In basing this series locally, we hope to provide space and celebration for the writers among us, to highlight the art being made around the corner and around the world. Jerry Pinkney is a perfect first choice as his art and books reflect a dynamic mind and sensibility, and his aesthetic speaks to all people.” There will be a reception and book signing immediately following Pinkney’s presentation, which is free and open to the public. Getting Ready for the Holidays

The Historic Odessa Foundation Presents Its 2013 Holiday Tours and Special Exhibit: “A Madeline Christmas” he Historic Odessa Foundation (HOF) will transform its National Historic Landmark Corbit-Sharp House (c. 1774) into the “old house in Paris that was covered with vines” for this year’s literature-inspired holiday exhibit entitled “A Madeline Christmas.” Adapted from the 1956 classic children’s story, “Madeline’s Christmas,” written and illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans (1898-1962), the house will be adorned as Madeline’s Paris boarding school as part of the foundation’s 2013 Christmas Holiday Tours, November 13 to January 5, 2014. On December 16, author John Bemelmans Marciano, grandson of Ludwig Bemelmans, will stop by HOF for two book readings. Interpreting classic literature for the holidays has been a tradition at the Historic Houses of Odessa for more than a quarter of a century. “A Madeline Christmas” will feature decorated rooms which represent several aspects of the book, including a dining room set for twelve girls, a Christmas parlor, a kitchen stacked with dirty dishes, and the classic’s bedroom with two rows of six beds. “A Madeline Christmas” takes place the night before Christmas. Eleven of the twelve girls are ill, and Madeline seeks to aid them with the help of a magical rug merchant whom she thought might be Santa Claus. All of the Historic Odessa Foundation’s properties, collectively known as the Historic Houses of Odessa, will be open and on display for the holiday season, from Nov. 13, 2013 to Jan. 5, 2014. Special events and tours will be held throughout the holiday season including: • Storybook Trees Exhibit: A festive display of Christmas trees decorated by local families, schools, and organizations showcasing books and works of children’s literature. • Holiday School Tours: Offered November 13 through December 31. • Champagne Candlelight Tours: Experience a special candle-

or performed. Known for his rhythmic detail and bizarre time signatures, he also shows influence both of jazz and folk music. His work is broad enough to anticipate John Cage and the dissonance of the Dadaists/modernists as well as to embrace his early influence of Debussy, Scriabin, and Richard Strauss. Prokofiev’s String Quartet No.1 in b minor, written in the following decade was premiered in Washington DC in 1931, yet still reflects the more romantic era in Russia, especially in its distinctive finale, highly intense in emotion and full of sweeping melodies. Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No.1 in C major, (1938) is at times both wistful and ironic. Especially its third movement, this quartet dances like a carefree firefly, it is thought, a reflection of his early childhood, but also mirrors the war and politics of the twentieth century. So simultaneously and

somewhat subversively, it is also a vehicle for Shostakovich’s private thoughts of a repressive Russian regime. The Meiravi Quartet, comprised of violinists, Igor Szwec and Gregory Teperman, violist Peter Nocella, and cellist Vivian Barton Dozor, performs both traditional and modern repertoire. Individually, they each have impressive resumes, and together have been developing a following in the area since their ensemble debut. Nocella, also a knowledgeable music historian and lecturer, regularly provides in-concert talks to illuminate the music performed. “The Butterfly Project” Takes Flight Destined for Czech Republic n Sunday, November 3, Wolf Performing Arts Center (Wolf PAC) announced that they have been invited by the Prague Youth Theatre (PYT) to bring their touring production of “The Butterfly Project” to Prague this April. “The Butterfly Project” features the play “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” by Celeste Raspanti, based on the book of the same name. The play tells the story of the children of Terezin, a concentration camp during the Holocaust, and uses poetry written by those imprisoned children. The cast features 36 child actors from the all over the greater Philadelphia area and represents 20 schools. Since launching “The Butterfly Project,” Wolf PAC has brought this production to 40 different audiences at schools, places of worship, senior and community centers across the greater Philadelphia area free of charge. The announcement came during a brunch held at Harcum College’s Little Theatre Hon. Consulate General of the Czech Republic in to celebrate the success and Philadelphia from Jenkintown, Peter Raffeli, Evelyn and Ed future of “The Butterfly ProRosen from Bryn Mawr hosted the event. ject.” Ed and Evelyn Rosen, Ted and Toni Rosen, David Lincoln and Melissa Morris hosted the event for 75 supporters, actors and families of “The Butterfly Project.” Wolf PAC’s Executive Director, Bobbi Wolf, beamed with pride as she triumphantly shared the news with the attendees. “Just when I thought this journey had reached it pinnacle, I discovered that we had not at all reached the height that this Butterfly is capable of flying.” During the visit to Prague, Wolf PAC’s 30 young actors and teaching artists will meet with 30 PYT students and teachers to share a Passover Seder and prepare a cross cultural performance of “The Butterfly Project.” These performances will be held in the International School of Prague and on site of the former concentration camp of Terezin. Indescribably significant, the actors of Wolf PAC will meet Dr. Raja Zadnikova, née Englanderova, the survivor about whom the play is based. Dr. Zadnikova has met the Wolf PAC cast via Skype twice since the project’s inception in 2012. “Things like performing in Prague and meeting Raja don’t actually happen,” said Nina McKay, one of the young actors of the cast. “Those are dreams that never come true but are nice to think about once in awhile.”

A Healthy Tradition of Care and Wellness

The Weenie Roast is Merion Mercy’s time-honored Halloween celebration. For more than 50 years, this celebration is a fun-filled afternoon for the students to show off their Halloween best, to perform skits with classmates, and to enjoy a picnic with their friends and the entire school community. From left – Sophomores Theresa Dierkes of Drexel Hill, Jaclyn Benedict of Broomall, Gwen Mattia of Elkins Park, Elizabeth McMonagle of Havertown, and Elizabeth Olson of Marlton, NJ, “time travel for their Halloween skit.
