Despite coming from different and distant cultures, these playwrights remind us that deeply human stories are universal. Inis Nua mines the shared cultural histories of these countries for an American audience, introducing Philadelphia audiences to fresh new voices from abroad who tackle social, political, and personal issues that we see in our country today. Inis Nua continues to shape the cultural landscape of Philadelphia. Their 2019 - 2020 season will include their 25th American premiere and three Philadelphia premieres. The company has been the recipient of 6 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre including the prestigious June and Steve Wolfson Award for an Evolving Theatre Company (2014) and been nominated for an additional 13 Barrymore Awards. Artistic Director and Founder Tom Reing says “I am so excited for our 16th season! We are doing three plays that show the vast array of stories from Ireland and the UK. These stories are about finding humanity in ourselves and others and remind us that across cultures and countries, human connection is vital to our lives and the stories we tell.” The Night Alive by Tony Award-nominated Conor McPherson is a delicate and humane play from one of Ireland’s most widely produced and highly regarded playwrights. The play will be making its Philadelphia Premiere after highly successful productions both off-Broadway and in London. The Night Alive tells the story of Tommy who lives in a filthy studio apartment and survives on odd jobs around Dublin. When he rescues a young woman from her abusive boyfriend, Tommy’s dilapidated home becomes a safe haven from her violent past and the tenuous friendship they build forever alters their lives. Your help ensures that these vulnerable neighbors have access to medical appointments, banks, pharmacies, and grocery stores, while providing social interaction and reducing isolation. When and how often you volunteer is completely up to you! Use the online system to choose which appointments to accept from your own computer or phone. ElderNet staff is always on hand to assist and answer any questions. ElderNet’s volunteers have been helping older and younger disabled adults to remain in their homes with safety and dignity for over 40 years. ElderNet is looking for volunteers to join their team! Mary Jo Daley, D-Montgomery, announces a free shredding event being held this Saturday, October 5, in the parking lot of the Magisterial District Court at 925 Montgomery Avenue in Narberth. The rain-or-shine shredding will run from 9-11 a.m. or when the truck is full, whichever comes first. There is a maximum of four boxes or bags per household. No newspapers, magazines or journals will be shredded. All shredded paper will be baled and recycled. Daley is co-hosting the event with Rep. Pamela A. Empty the Shelters Adoption Event
After successfully placing over 23,000 pets in homes, BISSELL Pet Foundation is back to Empty the Shelters at a participating location near you. On Saturday, October 12, adopters will have a chance to bring a pet home from Pennsylvania SPCA for the reduced fee of $25 while BPF sponsors the remaining cost. Pennsylvania SPCA is one of 125 organizations in 26 states taking part in this special adoption day. All adoptable pets available during Empty the Shelters will be microchipped and spayed/neutered. MinorityLand will perform September 25 - October 5 at West Kensington Ministry before transferring to Theatre Horizon in Norristown, October 11 - 13. “MinorityLand was Power Street’s first production, premiering in the 2013 FringeArts Festival at Taller Puertorriqueño, followed by a staged reading at the University of Pennsylvania for the 2014 Festival Latino,” explained Power Street’s Founder and Co-Artistic Director Gabriela Sanchez. “Six years later, the themes of this play inspired by the gentrification in North Philadelphia continue to resonate.” In addition, Power Street is thrilled to announce their new audiences programming, called Comunidades Conectadas. Coordinated by resident artists Rachel O’Hanlon-Rodriguez and Lori Felipe-Barkin, Power Street will host community conversations in order to investigate North Philadelphia’s current relationship to theater while offering participants free tickets to the show. In addition to these North Philly community discussions, Power Street will offer three performances with accompanying bus rides from four different areas in the city: Chinatown, West Philadelphia, South Philadelphia, and the Northeast. Bus participants will receive free transportation to and from the theater and discounted $15 tickets to the show. Childcare is included with all ticket sales, but audience members must RSVP for these services.

Following the route he planned and the advice of the great explorers before her, Rory packs a rucksack and her father’s ashes for a journey of love, loss, and endless snow. The Stage called A Hundred Words for Snow “an ice-bound odyssey brimming with humor and humanity.” The production will be directed by Barrymore Award-nominated director and Inis Nua Associate Director and Literary Manager Claire Moyer. Performances are February 5 - 23, 2020 at the Louis Bluver Theatre at The Drake. Opening night is February 7, 2020. The final mainstage production of Inis Nua’s 2019 - 2020 season will be Folk by Tom Wells, a warmhearted play with traditional Irish and English folksongs. The play tells the story of three people who don’t quite belong: Winnie who is a middle-aged Irish nun with a foul mouth and a penchant for Guinness, Stephen who is a lonely man caring for his father, and Kayleigh who is a pregnant teen on her own. In their small town in the north of England there’s not much room for misfits, but these three loners forge a deep connection through their love of folk music. The Guardian said about Folk: Wells “has the priceless ability to endow the ordinary with luminous significance.” The production will also be directed by Barrymore Award-nominated director and Inis Nua Associate Director and Literary Manager Claire Moyer. Each year Inis Nua hosts its Pop-Up Play in a Pub, a fun night out at Fergie’s in Center City, one of Philly’s most beloved Irish Pubs. This year’s Pop-Up Play in a Pub is Lemons, Lemons, Lemons, Lemons, Lemons by Sam Steiner, directed by Founder and Artistic Director Tom Reing. Lemons, Lemons, Lemons, Lemons, Lemons is set in a not-too-distant future where Hush Laws have been instated, limiting each individual to only 140 words per day. Nine Baldwin students have been named Semifinalists and six students have been named Commended Students in the 65th annual National Merit® Scholarship Program. Sophie Feng, Annie Lin, Abby Shen, Lilly Siderowf, Saachi Singh, Mary Wu, Emily Xiong, Katherine Yang and Melody Yu have been recognized as Semifinalists for their outstanding performance on the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). Of the nearly 1.5 million high school juniors who entered the program, these nine Baldwin students were among 16,000 seniors who qualified for recognition as Semifinalists. Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships, worth about $31 million that will be offered next spring. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. Finalists will be selected based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. In addition to Baldwin’s Semifinalists, Kit Conklin, Jennifer Liu, Ava Rosenberger, Meghna Sreedhar, Lisa Wang and Sydney Zilch have been named National Merit Commended Students by the 2020 National Merit Scholarship program. “We are extremely proud of our seniors recognized by National Merit,” said Valerie Marchand Welsh, Director of College Counseling. “Baldwin students are extraordinary in their academic and extra-curricular accomplishments. Organized by the Brandywine River Museum of Art, “Cinderella & Co.— Three Fairy Tales Reimagined” will explore the enduring stories of “Cinderella,” “The Three Little Pigs” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” presenting a wide array of illustrations created through time and across cultures. Guest curated by H. Nichols B. Clark, “Cinderella & Co.—Three Fairy Tales Reimagined” includes more than 100 drawings from books illustrated by 35 artists, revealing both cultural and stylistic diversity. The work of 19th and early 20th-century masters such as Walter Crane and L. Leslie Brooke provide examples of classic styles and Western interpretations of the three featured fairy tales, which influenced numerous artists in the exhibition including Marcia Brown, Paul Galdone, Barbara McClintock and Jerry Pinkney. Rich multicultural visualizations, such as those from China (Ed Young), the Spice Islands of Indonesia (Reynold Ruffins), the Caribbean (Brian Pinkney) and Mexico (Tomie dePaola), underscore the notion that these treasured stories live visually in many different forms and lend themselves to surprisingly diverse interpretation. Juxtaposed alongside more traditional retellings, contemporary versions with drawings that upend familiar narratives include the experimental and edgy visions imagined by Etienne Delessert, Steven Guarnaccia, Lane Smith, William Wegman, David Wiesner and Mo Willems. Also featured will be a lively performance by the Academy of International Ballet performing a variety of classical and contemporary works, as well as excerpts from the Nutcracker Ballet. Free admission. • Discussion and Book Signing with Jerry Pinkney (Sunday, October 6, 12 p.m. - 2 p.m.): “Cinderella & Co.” exhibition artist Jerry Pinkney will discuss his creative process and distinguished career as an artist and illustrator. Prior to his talk, Pinkney will sign copies of his books, which will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop. Artist Jerry Pinkney has illustrated over 100 children’s books and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Caldecott Medal, five Caldecott Honors and five New York Times “Best Illustrated Books.” He has received five Coretta Scott King Awards and four Coretta Scott King Honor Awards. • Reimagined Fairy Tales: A Conversation with H. Nichols B. Clark and Steven Guarnaccia (Thursday, October 24, 6 p.m.): Shake up what you know about fairy tales in this conversation with guest curator H. Nichols B. Clark and illustrator Steven Guarnaccia, whose creative interpretations of classic tales inspired the exhibition, “Cinderella & Co.—Three Fairy Tales Reimagined.” In Guarnaccia’s inventive versions, Cinderella’s apparel comes from some of the most famous fashion designers of the 20th and 21st century; the three bears are mid-20th-century hipsters living with high-end 20thcentury furniture; and the three little pigs are noted architects Philip Johnson, Frank Gehry and Frank Lloyd Wright. A book signing and reception will follow. Titles by Guarnaccia will be available for purchase in the Museum shop. $15 members, $20 non-members. • Stroller Tours: Cinderella and Co. (Tuesday, November 12, 10:30 a.m.): Enjoy a relaxed morning out with your little one while engaging with art in the “Cinderella & Co.—Three Fairy Tales Reimagined” exhibition. This guided tour is designed especially for adults accompanied by babies. Stroller Tours are offered once a month, each with a different theme. Free with Museum admission. • Creative Escape: Paper Quilled Snowflakes (Wednesday, November 13, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.): Come to the Brandywine River Museum of Art to unwind, mingle and make art! Designed for adults who want to awaken their inner artists, this program will include a hands-on paper quilling activity led by professional artist Ann Martin. Participants will be introduced to the basic tools and techniques of paper quilling and will create a one-of-a-kind snowflake that can be used as an ornament or to embellish a gift this holiday season. The evening will also include an opportunity to view Brandywine’s special exhibition “Cinderella & Co.—Three Fairy Tales Reimagined.” No experience is necessary. Program fee includes art materials and light refreshments. BYOB! $20 members; $25 non-members. • Illustrating for a Changing World (Wednesday, November 20, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.): To gain notice in an ever-changing world, books must keep up with the times. Join three-time Caldecottwinning illustrator, David Wiesner, as he discusses his strategy for staying current. Featured works will include Wiesner’s creative version of “The Three Little Pigs; Spot,” a story that is also a computer app; and the graphic novel “Fish Girl.” A book signing and reception will follow. Titles by Wiesner will be available for purchase in the Museum shop. $15 members and teachers with school ID; $20 non-members. • Listen, Move and Create with Barbara McClintock (Saturday, November 23, 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.): Families are invited to join author/illustrator Barbara McClintock as she shares her love of books and illustrating during a fun and interactive reading of her book, “The Five Forms.” Afterwards, Barbara will lead a creative craft influenced by the Chinese woodblock prints which inspired the illustrations in her book. The shared program will be presented in Conwell Dance Theater at 1801 N. Broad Street, 5th Floor on Friday and Saturday, October 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. Conceived and directed by Artistic Director AnneMarie Mulgrew, “Strange Dreams: 30 Years Later” is a multi-media production for nine dancers which features inventive choreography, colorful props, striking projections, a portable set, a genre-defying sound score and inflatable costumes. Strange Dreams tackles dream-like states—the sensations, memories, colors and sounds in a non-linear stream of consciousness format. Dreams appear, disappear, and continue to haunt the dreamer who questions the logic of it all. New York-based dance company MizantyMoves Dance premieres its newest work, “Laura.” Inspired by prime-time television crime dramas from the 90s and beyond, this quartet imagines the lives and afterlives of four fictional women. The non-linear narrative utilizes movement and live vocal performances, exploring violence against women in popular American media, the consumption of normalized violence in contemporary culture and The Disposable Woman. DeLissio to Discuss Recreational Cannabis at 89th Town Hall State Rep. Pamela A. DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., will host her 89th Town Hall Meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 16 in the Wolcoff Auditorium of the Roxborough Memorial Hospital located at 5800 Ridge Ave., Philadelphia. As DeLissio announced at her previous town hall in September, the topic for discussion at this Town Hall will be adult-use recreational cannabis. The discussion, DeLissio said, will feature both proponents of recreational use of cannabis and those who oppose legalization. Plenty of free parking is available in the Jamestown Lot or along the nearby streets. House Bill 50 was introduced earlier this year and has been referred to the Pennsylvania House Health Committee. Moliere’s Tartuffe Opens at Hedgerow October 9 hough more than 350 years old, Tartuffe, French playwright Molière’s greatest comedy, addresses subjects that are pressingly current: the spiritual neediness of the rich, the power of religious zealots to manipulate the unwary, and the slippery nature of truth. Starting October 9, Hedgerow Theatre will be in the grip of one of history’s greatest impostors, the immortal character called Tartuffe, who has been hilariously preying on the gullible for 355 years. Tartuffe, written by Moliere in 1664, is one of the most popular plays ever produced because no matter when it’s performed, audiences see their lives and times uproariously satirized on stage. This is especially true today, just months away from the first national primary, when it’s impossible to believe that Moliere didn’t have our current political scene and its largerthan-life figures in mind. Brexit and Boris Johnson, anyone? Director Peter Reynolds says that now is the ideal time to explore this enduring satire. “Under the comedy is Moliere’s all-too-relevant alarm about being seduced by those who promise salvation but are really only interested in their own self-gratification, wealth, and domination.” Hedgerow’s Artistic Director Jared Reed says he chose to present Tartuffe now because “the play exerts such a vice-like grip on our collective imagination at this moment. I believe that Tartuffe can help us understand what’s happening in the world. Today, we find ourselves in a divide, each side deeply convinced that others are blindly following self-appointed leaders and anything that they don’t agree with is ‘fake news.’” Accordingly, the production nods to its past while being very much of today. In a style they describe as “modern Baroque,” costume designer Marla Jurglanis and set designer James F. Pyne, Jr. have created a world that looks to be three centuries old and yet absolutely fresh from the pages of fashion magazines. Director Reynolds explains, “it’s important to me that we all understand that the same things happened nearly 400 years ago because we haven’t changed all that much, though we’d like to think we’ve advanced.” Tartuffe’s cast introduces some fresh faces to Hedgerow, including Melissa Fuhr as Dorine, the servant who speaks truth to power, Kate Horner as the whistle-blower Cleante, and Brianna Lopez as Mariane, the young woman promised in marriage to Tartuffe himself. Marcus Barainaky, last seen at Hedgerow in Three Sisters, is the scandalized son Damis, while Hedgerow’s current class of acting fellows play the parts of Valere (Thane Madsen), Flipote (Joanna Bak), and Lauren (Michael McInerney). Company members round out the cast in the roles of Orgon, the man who invites Tartuffe into his seemingly perfect household (Adam Altman), his selfsacrificing wife Elmire (Jen Summerfield), his mother Madame Pernelle (Susan Wefel), and the officers of the law Loyal (Stacy Skinner) and the Marshall (Zoran Kovcic). Robert Smythe plays Tartuffe. Tartuffe features set design by James F. Pyne, Jr., costume design by Marla Jurglanis, light design by Andrea Rumble-Moore, and sound design by Aaron Oster.
