“An optimist is the human personification of spring.” — SUSAN J. BISSONETTE

There’s much to be said for the power of positive thinking. In fact, an optimistic outlook has been linked to better health as well as a lower risk of disease. As the days grow longer and the landscape comes to life, be sure to look on the bright side – it may just make a difference in your health. In the spirit of better health, our spring issue of HealthScope® magazine is filled with timely medical topics that seek to educate and empower men and women of all ages. First up, our feature “Blood Types” answers common questions about these classifications and underscores the importance of knowing your type. Our feature “What You Should Know About the Autism Spectrum” sheds some light on Autism Spectrum Disorder, including how it presents and how you can show support to someone with it. In “Parkinson’s Disease,” we cover the symptoms, causes, and what you can do to treat this neurodegenerative disorder. Also inside are inspiring stories and words of wisdom from local women in the sections “Inspired,” “Her Story,” and our newest section, “Balanced.” You won’t want to miss our annual “Tech for Your Health” section covering the latest technological advancements in healthcare, from high-tech therapeutic devices to hearing aids that connect to your smartphone.

There are many more topics for you to discover, including a guided partner workout with Calvin and Denise O’Neil, healthy pineapple recipes, and spring denim picks from local boutiques. On George Mullinix page 74, you’ll find PUBLISHER our Mother’s Day Gift Guide, which offers up inspiration on ways to show Mom how much you appreciate her. Last, but certainly not least, enjoy our interview with cover models Susan Flanagan, Lee Anne Werner, and Suzanne Felts. Having spent the last few decades as close friends, these ladies are an integral part of each other’s support systems, and on page 66, they talk about the importance of uplifting and celebrating each other through life’s ups and downs. We hope that when reading through this issue of HealthScope® magazine, you will be informed, inspired, and filled with optimism for a happy, healthy life. Blessings always,

hen Dr. Snell was only 10 years old, her father became very sick with bleeding ulcers and ultimately had emergency surgery that saved his life. That’s when her interest in medicine began. During high school, she realized her aptitude for math and science, and she naturally followed that track throughout her undergraduate education. As the newest surgical oncologist joining the USA Breast Services, Dr. Snell is following her passion by providing women faced with breast cancer diagnoses the best care and utmost support. “I found my home in breast surgery,” says Dr. Snell. “It’s a place where I can advocate for women in the operating room and for women who need expert cancer care.”

1

What do you love most about your profession? One of my favorite things about breast surgery is the

ability to help women with a big problem, but then I also get to continue caring for them and ensuring they stay well over the

Why have you chosen to work in surgical oncology? During my medical school rotations, I was

immediately drawn to surgery. I very much equated the work of surgeons to that of electricians and plumbers – there’s a problem and we work to fix it. It’s my privilege to work with these women, solve the problem, and provide the compassion and care they need while doing it.

What sets your practice apart? I believe in multidisciplinary care – meaning we are

all working together as surgeons, oncologists, geneticists, nutritionists, and support staff – to help women understand their options and choose the very best path forward through their cancer and beyond.

“It’s crazy to think that 30 years later I would fall in love with and marry the man who got the call to take my place at work the day of my accident.” - Marcia

Living life has never been a walk in the park for me. I was born in the back of a 1963 Ford Galaxy, and things only got more interesting from there. Growing up, my family lived in a rural town about 30 miles from Fort Payne, Alabama, and farming was our life. From a young age, I could be found pulling a tow sack picking peppers or cotton. By the time I was 14, I was spending my entire summer babysitting, and once I was able to get a regular job at the age of 16, I went to work at Shoney’s. Working hard was something everyone in our family did, and it set the stage for the work ethic I have carried with me throughout the rest of my life. At age 20, I got my first ‘real’ job with Quadel Management Corporation and pretty quickly moved from a receptionist to a file clerk with my own office. Soon after, I got the opportunity to work for Mid America Entertainment, a brand-new company, as an office manager and bookkeeper. I remember calling my brother, David, wondering if I should take the job, and he simply said, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” I turned in my notice and took the job, which turned into an amazing career lasting more than 30 years. That job would later lead to a network of entertainment catering gigs, and I was constantly on the move. I would drive from one concert to the next just to do it all over again, but it was a job I loved. I was always on the road, and one day, I was on my way to Memphis to cater a Journey concert when the unthinkable happened. I got into a horrible vehicle accident. The car rolled several times, and the resulting injuries left me without two fingers and my thumb on my right hand. The doctor in Murfreesboro where the accident happened said that I was a perfect candidate for a thoe (an operation in which they replace a missing or damaged thumb with a toe). Without a thumb, a hand loses its mobility; a thoe would restore my hand’s mobility, but I wasn’t interested. I had already lost enough, and I did not want to lose another digit, even if it was just going elsewhere on my body.

SPONSORED CONTENT

A second and third medical opinion yielded similar feedback. I went home to see Dr. John Franklin who felt confident in the procedure, but I still wasn’t on board. On my first day home from the hospital, however, I went to blow dry my hair and just couldn’t make it work. I told my mom that I had changed my mind and that I needed a thumb, and I wanted it as soon as I could get it. I scheduled the first surgery possible on Friday, March 13, so God would know I wasn’t superstitious. I can never remember if it was 13 hours and 11 surgeons or 11 hours and 13 surgeons, but either way, this surgery was a huge undertaking. After a few days of being held in a burn unit to aid with blood flow, I began my road to recovery. Now, 35 years later, I couldn’t be more happy and blessed to be alive. I truly love life, God, and my family, and I try really hard to never take it for granted. I’ve had an amazing team of doctors and

nurses, along with family members, who have supported me and helped me get to where I am today. While I was in the hospital, my sister, Sonia, visited me every day and made me color, eventually teaching me to write left-handed. And I am forever grateful to the family who witnessed my accident, stopped, and took me to the hospital. Early in life, I learned the value of hard work and determination, and it is that key teaching that has helped me recover from this accident with my spirit intact. I have never let what happened stop me from living my life. I’ve played on softball and volleyball teams, and I love to rollerblade. But more importantly, I love to inspire others. I want to inspire anyone out there that thinks they can’t make it through to realize that they do have what it takes. They are strong and they can persevere, just as I did.

Marcia Caldwell

H E A LT H I N A M I N U T E FOR HIM

Simple Tips to Stop Snoring It’s family vacation season, which might mean sleeping in closer quarters than usual. Here are some tips to make sure you (and your family!) get a restful night of sleep.

Try snoozing on your side.

Sleeping on your back can constrict your airway and lead to snoring, but sleeping on your side can help keep your throat and nasal passages open. A good body pillow can help you stay on your side more comfortably.

Skip the last call.

Did you know that drinking alcohol before bed can increase snoring? Sedatives cause the muscles in your neck and throat to relax, which leads to noisy vibrations when you breathe. Closing your tab about four to five hours before bedtime can help limit the negative effects of alcohol on your sleep.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Drinking enough water is generally important for your health, but it can also decrease your chances of snoring. When you’re dehydrated, normal secretions in your nose and throat become stickier, which often leads to snoring.

Clear those sinuses.

If snoring starts in your nose, opening your nasal passages can be an easy fix. The steam from a hot bedtime shower might be enough to clear out your sinuses, or you could opt for nasal strips to physically open up your nasal passages.

5 Signs You Might Have Low Testosterone Testosterone production naturally decreases with age, but testosterone levels can sometimes decrease more than they should. The symptoms associated with low testosterone can be subtle, but they can keep you from feeling your best. If you are experiencing some of the following symptoms, you can talk to your doctor about testing and treatment for low testosterone.

1

HAIR LOSS. Balding is a natural

part of the aging process for many men, but men who are experiencing low testosterone may notice a loss of body or facial hair as well.

2

CHANGES IN BODY FAT. In-

creased levels of body fat can be a sign of low testosterone. Gynecomastia (enlarged breast tissue) in particular is often a sign of hormonal imbalance.

14

HealthScopeMag.com

3

CHANGES IN MOOD. Testoster-

one plays an important role in many bodily processes, and disruptions can lead to notable changes in your mood including irritability, depression, anxiety, and more.

4

FATIGUE. A decrease in testos-

terone can lead to decreased energy. Feeling tired regardless of how much sleep you get each night or lacking the motivation to do the

activities you once enjoyed can both be signs that low testosterone is affecting your energy.

5

LOW SEX DRIVE. Testosterone

is linked to libido, or sex drive, in men. Decreased sex drive is a natural part of aging for many, but a drastic change can be a sign that your testosterone levels are out of balance.

Be present when your little one is enjoying screen time. You may talk about what you’re viewing, answer questions, and point out things like good behavior. Research television shows and games before allowing access. Familiarizing yourself with what your child is consuming will help you determine if it is age-appropriate. Make non-screen time a priority. Playtime is absolutely essential to a child’s development, so be sure to schedule plenty of time for play as well as hobbies such as art, music, and sports. Shut down the screens at least one hour before bedtime. Additionally, keep screens out of your child’s bedroom to ensure they get a good night’s rest.

Screen time often gets a bad rap, but by managing your child’s screen time, you can help them form a healthy relationship with technology. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies younger than 18 months of age should avoid screen time entirely unless video chatting with family or friends. For toddlers 18 to 24 months, some screen time may be introduced, but limited to educational programming with a parent or caregiver, and by ages 2 or 3, it’s recommended that kids be allowed up to one hour of screen time per day. Here are a few tips as you form your own guidelines regarding screen time:

H E A LT H I N A M I N U T E FOR PARENTS

The introduction of solid foods is such an exciting time in your child’s development. While your little one will still be getting the bulk of their nutrition from breast milk or formula, you can start to offer solid food once baby nears six months of age and:

✓ Can sit with minimal support

✓ Can hold their head steady and upright for the length of a meal ✓ Can pick up food and bring it toward the mouth ✓ Appears interested in food As for which food should be your baby’s first, you have plenty of nutritious options. Many parents like to start with foods that are easily mashed, such as banana, sweet potatoes, avocado, or squash. Around six months of age, your baby’s iron needs increase, so foods like well-cooked meat, mashed beans, and fortified infant cereals can be excellent first foods that help them meet their needs. You can also start to introduce common allergens right away, including eggs, nut butters, and fish; serving these foods early and often may help reduce your child’s risk of developing a food allergy. In addition to these considerations, you should think about the foods that you and your family love, as these will be the foods that baby will likely grow up eating. And, most importantly, have fun!

MESSAGE RECEIVED: Communication Tips for Families Every family has its arguments. If you repeatedly have the same arguments, however, your family may be experiencing a breakdown in communication. The following tips can help you achieve healthier communication and conflict resolution. Don’t try to “win” the argument. In order for

one person to “win,” another has to lose. This leads to feelings of resentment rather than healthy resolutions. True communication requires all parties to listen with the desire to work toward a resolution together.

Respond, don’t react. During heated moments, you may find yourself reacting from an emotional place rather than responding thoughtfully. This can be hurtful, and it’s better to pause, take a breath, and consider your response before speaking.

Know when to walk away. It’s okay to table the con-

versation for another time. If one party is experiencing

intense emotions, the conversation may be unproductive. Try distancing yourselves and taking a break to cool down and gather your thoughts.

Practice empathetic listening. Listen with the goal

of understanding the other person and how they are feeling. Ask for clarification if you don’t understand something rather than assuming you know what someone meant to say.

Use “I” statements. Speaking to how a situation affects you rather than accusing the other party can be more productive. Try leading with “I feel…” instead of “You did…” as blame tends to make people defensive, which makes it harder to have a productive conversation.

The Dog Days of Summer The four-legged members of our family enjoy summer outings just as much as the rest of us, but sometimes the sun can be too much for them. Here’s how to tell when a dog is overheated and how you can help. Signs of Overheating Excessive panting. Panting is normal, labored and frantic breathing is not.

Move them into a cool, shady area immediately. Spray cool (not cold) water over their body. Cold water could send him into shock.

Abnormal salivation. Puddles of drool and foamy lips are a sign that your dog is in distress.

Take them to an emergency clinic as soon as possible.

Vomiting or diarrhea. Dehydration can lead to upset tummies.

Preventing Overheating

Disorientation. If your dog cannot stand, sways when he walks, or seems “out of it,” something is wrong. Loss of consciousness. In extreme cases, your dog may experience seizures or pass out.

18

Treating an Overheated Dog

HealthScopeMag.com

Pay close attention to your dog. If you’re sweating, remember that your dog has to work harder to cool himself down, and he will likely be uncomfortable as well. Come prepared. Bring cooling towels, ice packs, plenty of cool water, and a spray bottle to keep your pup cool while you’re out. Do not leave a dog in an enclosed space without adequate ventilation or air conditioning.

H E A LT H I N A M I N U T E FOR HER

With countless sunscreen brands on the market today, it can be hard to decide which option is the best for your skin and your lifestyle. Read on to learn more about natural sunscreen and why some people prefer it. What Is Natural Sunscreen? A sunscreen that is “natural” includes active ingredients that are naturally derived from the earth. Natural sunscreens contain the minerals zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as opposed to chemicals like oxybenzone, octinoxate, or avobenzone that are used in synthetic sunscreens. How Does It Work? Natural sunscreens create a barrier on your skin to physically block UV rays, whereas synthetic sunscreens work by absorbing them. Natural sunscreens tend to be thicker and more opaque, and typically leave a somewhat visible film over the skin. Unlike synthetic sunscreens, natural sunscreens begin working immediately after application because they don’t need to be absorbed into the skin.

Is Natural Sunscreen Right for You?

Tips for Forming New Habits Habits are just patterns of behavior that drive us toward a goal, but what happens when our goals change? It’s easy to set a new goal, but new habits can be tricky. Following these three simple tips can help you build habits that stick.

1. Stack your odds. Try “habit stacking” – build a new habit onto an existing habit that you’ve had for a while. This will make the new habit easier to adopt. Example: If you want to get in the habit of walking every day, take a walk every time you go to get the mail. You’re already headed down the driveway, so adding a lap around the block doesn’t feel like a big change!

20

HealthScopeMag.com

Why Do Some People Prefer Natural Sunscreens? ♥ Sensitive skin concerns. People with conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or other conditions that cause sensitive skin may experience discomfort with chemical sunscreens.

♥ Concern about chemicals. The active ingredients in chemical sunscreens have not proven to definitively cause harm to humans, but some people prefer to avoid them. ♥ Skin allergies. Some people are allergic to the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens.

2. Start small. No matter how big a change you want to make, small steps toward your goal are the best way to get there. Set yourself up for success by keeping your goals attainable and slowly raising your expectations. Example: Instead of saying you’re going to work out for an hour every day, start with just 10 minutes of exercise. If you can keep going, great! But if you feel sore and need to stop, you still met your goal.

3. Remember why you’re making the change. It’s important to ask yourself why you want to form a new habit and be clear about what you want to gain from it. This will help you stay motivated and be intentional. Example: You don’t just want to start walking, you want to feel better and have more energy throughout your day.

ASK THE DOCTOR

Q. I’ve noticed my 8-year-old son asking for extra helpings at the dinner table lately. How can I make sure he’s staying healthy with his eating habits in a way that doesn’t harm his relationship with food?

A.

Mealtimes pose different challenges for families; requests for extra food servings are common. I remind parents that the best way to teach healthy eating is by modeling! Strengthen family relationships by enjoying each other’s company with set meal and snack schedules without distractions. Give a single serving of the main course and offer second helpings of vegetables if your child is still hungry. Offer your child water because thirst is often confused for hunger. Our stomach needs 20 minutes to send fullness cues to our brain. Increasing our awareness when eating gives our stomach and brain enough time to communicate! Appetites vary throughout childhood and adolescence due to changing calorie needs. Check with your child’s physician about

senior living setting is best for her?

A.

First, ask her what she envisions for her own future. Is she socially active and does she want to be around other people, or is she more comfortable being alone? Sometimes a familiar environment is best if there are eyesight issues or dementia. Another consideration is affordability. The cost of long-term care can be surprising. In-home assistance is usually a minimum of around $100 per visit, and senior living is thousands of

dollars per month, depending on the level of care. As you face this situation with your mother, take time to consider your own retirement care plan. Don’t leave that responsibility with your family. It’s not just financial planning – it’s empowering yourself by making your own informed decisions about who will care for you, if needed, in the future. Finally, share your plan with those you love!

My friend says that exercising outdoors will help alleviate my depression, but I’m not so sure. What’s the science behind that?

A.

Being outside and exercising have profound effects on the brain and the chemicals that affect our mood. When we exercise, the body releases hormones called endorphins – the body’s natural pain killer. Endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body and create a feeling of general well-being. Regular exercise, with a goal of at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, allows our brain to remodel its reward system, leading to higher levels of dopamine, the “feel-good” hormone. Being outside allows us to engage our five senses and connect with nature and sunlight, which causes the brain to release a hormone called

serotonin. Serotonin is the mood-boosting hormone that helps us feel calm and focused. This combination is a powerhouse for mental and emotional health. Although this will not cure your depression on its own, it can help alleviate some symptoms. Paired with other lifestyle changes, your depression could be alleviated naturally.

Q.

I just got hearing aids a few days ago, and I’m having some trouble adjusting to them. How long does it usually take for people to get used to wearing hearing aids?

A.

The most common type of hearing loss is age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis. This type of hearing loss is gradual and occurs over time. When an individual suffers from this type of hearing loss, they lose the ability to hear sounds in the speech spectrum and normal environmental sounds. The brain adapts to the loss of these sounds, therefore giving the individual the sensation of not noticing they have hearing loss. When one is fitted with hearing aids, those sounds are reintroduced to their brain, and it takes time to acclimate to those sounds again. It is a good idea when being fitted with hearing aids to wear them daily to make the adjustment period less challenging. It can take several weeks to adjust, but the outcome is being able to enjoy one’s life with better hearing. Follow the advice of your hearing professional to achieve your best outcome.

hile it’s important to know your blood type, sometimes the science of it all can be a bit overwhelming. Here, we’ve gathered some common questions about blood types and broken down the answers with experts who can tell you all about it.

How is blood type determined? The traits that compose blood type are genetically inherited from your parents. Two elements determine blood type: the ABO group and the Rh factor. The four major ABO groups – A, B, AB, and O – reflect the presence or absence of A or B antigens in the blood, while the Rh factor (Rh+ or Rh-) reflects the presence or absence of a certain protein in the blood. The combination of these two factors leads to the eight most common blood types: A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+, and AB-.

Why is it important to know your blood type? There are two key reasons that it’s important to know your blood type: transfusions and donations. “One of the most valuable reasons to know your blood type is to help others through blood donation,” says Mary Still, a physician assistant with Cempa Community Care. “Sometimes blood banks will put out a call for specific blood types, so when you hear that your type is in need, it’s your opportunity to roll up your sleeve and donate to help others.” Blood shortages are unfortunately not uncommon, but blood donations are needed regularly for all kinds of patients. “While we commonly associate the need for blood with traumatic injuries such as those suffered during traffic accidents or natural disasters, blood products are also used on a daily basis to support the care of patients undergoing routine surgical procedures or treatment for many common diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes,” adds Karen Miller, the blood bank clinical coordinator for Erlanger Health System. On the flip side of that, it’s always good to know your own blood type in case you’re the one in need of a transfusion. While medical staff will test your blood and determine compatible blood types for you should you need a transfusion, it’s helpful to know your own blood type simply as an added precaution in case you ever notice any kind of discrepancy. Outside of these two reasons, knowing your blood type can also help to prepare you for a potential pregnancy complication that can occur when the mother’s blood type is Rhand the father’s is Rh+. This can lead to the mother’s blood creating antibodies that attack the baby’s blood, which can harm the child. Fortunately, this complication can be easily treated with proper prenatal care.

What kind of restrictions are in place for donating blood?

What does it mean to be a universal donor or recipient?

In the United States, there are some basic requirements that you must meet to be a blood donor. This includes being at least 16 or older (in most states), weighing 110 pounds or more, and generally being in good health. However, there are additional reasons why someone might be deferred, including feeling unwell on the day of donation, having low iron or hemoglobin levels, or having traveled to a country with a malaria risk designation in the past three years. Other risk factors that might prevent you from donating are use of some prescription medications, recently getting a tattoo, or a history of engaging in behaviors such as IV drug use or sex work. “These questions are intended to minimize the risk that donated blood may harm the recipient rather than help,” explains Miller. “For example, during chemotherapy treatment for cancer, the recipient’s immune system will not be performing optimally. A minor cold that your immune system could fight might easily overwhelm someone undergoing chemotherapy.”

The terms “universal donor” and “universal recipient” are pretty self-explanatory. What isn’t self-explanatory is what makes certain blood types that way. Antigens, which were mentioned previously as the factor that determines your blood’s ABO group, are also a major factor that determine your blood’s compatibility with other types. Type O blood contains no antigens – the protein in the blood that triggers an immune response – on the surface of the red blood cells. Type O- blood is considered to be the universal donor blood type due to its absence of antigens and the protein that determines the Rh factor. This means that red blood cells from O- blood can typically be transfused safely to any recipient. “This is especially important for trauma patients in the early moments of an emergency, as practitioners will often depend on O- blood to help save the person’s life,” adds Still. On the other hand, the universal recipient blood type is AB+. AB+ blood contains both A and B antigens, meaning anyone with AB+ blood can receive a transfusion of red blood cells of any type. Though not quite a universal recipient, AB- blood can receive transfusions of any negative blood type. However, both blood types are somewhat uncommon.

Can having a rare blood type affect your life or health? “This really depends on our definition of rare,” says Miller. For example, AB- is the rarest of the eight blood types in the United States. However, making up approximately 1% of the U.S. population still means that about 3 million people have that “rare” blood type. Furthermore, AB- is a universal recipient of negative-typed blood transfusions, as mentioned previously, so there often is no particular elevated risk for those with that blood type who are in need of a transfusion. There are, in fact, rare blood types that are so rare, they don’t fall within the typical spectrum of blood types. This includes the Rh null blood group – a blood type that contains no Rh antigens on its red blood cells. Often referred to as “golden blood” due to its rarity and universal donor status, this blood type has been discovered in just dozens of people globally. “If by ‘rare,’ we mean something as rare as a type from this blood group, then yes, having this rare blood type could definitely have effects on a person’s life,” Miller adds. “Finding blood for such a person would be next to impossible.”

Does your blood type determine anything else about your health, such as nutritional needs or whether or not mosquitos are attracted to you? Answers to questions regarding blood type and nutrition are still a work in progress. While some preliminary research has been done, “Currently there is not enough support evidence to validate the purported health benefits of blood type diets,” says Still. “If you are interested in pursuing a healthier lifestyle, I would recommend looking into a diet that emphasizes whole grains, vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, and seeds, such as the Mediterranean diet, which has more research and evidence behind it.” As for the mosquito “myth,” there is actually more truth to the idea that mosquitoes may be more attracted to certain blood types than one might initially believe. Some research has shown that mosquitoes might be more attracted to O blood types than others; however, other factors might increase your attractiveness to mosquitoes as well, such as the scent of your sweat or if you’ve just had a beer. So, if you suspect that mosquitoes prefer you to your friends, it’s important to remember that while your blood type could be a factor, it’s likely to be a combination of things that draws them in.

If you don’t know your blood type, ask a provider the next time you’re in for bloodwork – it’s important information to have for more reasons than one.

What You Should Know About the

Autism Spectrum

By Anna Hill

A

utism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often misunderstood by the general public. To shed some light on the truth of the condition – how it presents in people and the support that individuals with ASD might need – we’ve asked experts to weigh in.

34

HealthScopeMag.com

Signs of autism vary across the spectrum. Autism spectrum disorder is defined by the National Institute of Mental Health as a neurological and developmental condition that has an effect on the way people communicate, learn, behave, and interact with others. While there are common, medically established signs of autism – such as difficulty with communication and interaction, repetitive behaviors, restricted interests, and sensory differences – the word “spectrum” is important to remember. “The specific ways these characteristics present will be different in every autistic person depending upon their personality, environmental factors, and biological predispositions,” explains Dr. Karen Weigle, a licensed clinical psychologist with the Chattanooga Autism Center. “For example, social communication – including expressive and receptive language – can vary from a person who does not use words, to another person who is very verbally fluent but may be processing incoming communication more slowly than average, or anything in between.”

Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician, Siskin Children’s Institute

LORENA FERREIRA, MD, FAAP

Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician, Siskin Children’s Institute

KAREN WEIGLE, PHD

Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Chattanooga Autism Center

Other examples of variance across the spectrum include things like eye contact – some autistic people struggle with it, while others do not – or the amount of support they need from day to day. “However, we should be careful not to view autism as a ‘linear spectrum’ from low to high needs, but to look at each autistic individual as a whole person who has their own specific strengths and weaknesses in different areas, and that these can vary day to day,” adds Dr. Weigle. “Autistic people, like everyone else, also develop across their lifetime, and thus one person’s specific characteristics are not static but ever-changing.”

Autism can affect people differently depending on gender. Being female not only means that autism can present differently, but it can also mean that a diagnosis might be more challenging to obtain. “According to the CDC’s latest numbers, boys are four times more likely to be identified with autism compared to girls. Often girls are being missed or diagnosed late due to the challenges of recognizing their autism symptoms, as most autism screening tools were developed on data from studies of boys,” says Dr. Lorena Ferreira, a developmental behavioral pediatrician with Siskin Children’s Institute. “In addition, girls can be better at ‘masking’ their social difficulties, mimicking facial expressions, and appearing more motivated during social interactions. They could also exhibit less repetitive and restricted behaviors.

Currently, there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding autism spectrum disorder. Unfortunately, one of the biggest and most persistent misconceptions surrounding autism at this time is the false claim that it can be caused by vaccines. However, there is no credible evidence that supports this. “There has been extensive research done in the past 20 years regarding this topic,” Dr. Ferreira explains. “The original 1998 study that linked autism with vaccines has since been retracted. This study was based on only a sample of 12 children – where only eight had autism – and was based on a poor experimental design, ethical violations, and scientific misinterpretation.” Another harmful misconception that some people have about those on the autism spectrum is that they have no interest in others or any kind of interpersonal relationships. However, this assumption isn’t particularly accurate. “Because the majority of individuals with autism have some level of difficulty with social interactions, they may not be able to express their love or affection in a way expected by society,” says Dr. Ferreira. “Individuals with autism may find it difficult to show and express their feelings and emotions, or may just do it in a different way than what we would expect from their typically developing peers.” Furthermore, this misconception can inflict unfair isolation on those with autism. “It can lead others to overlook opportunities to connect with an autistic person who may not present their interests in a ‘typical’ way, which can leave people with autism feeling lonely and left out,” adds Dr. Weigle.

Intervention and support look different for every person with autism. First, it’s important to remember that many autistic individuals and their family and friends do not consider autism a disorder, and instead consider it to be part of their identity and embrace that identity. “The differences associated with autism are not necessarily something they need to ‘fix,’ and it is other people’s negative or unaccepting reactions to them that create problems and can lead to mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders, usually as a result of being misunderstood and marginalized by others,” says Dr. Weigle. For those who do seek support, there are a variety of therapies and services that can be beneficial. “However, interventions for children with ASD should be individualized, developmentally appropriate, and intensive, with specific treatment goals that should be monitored and reevaluated as the child makes developmental progress,” Dr. Cindy Chestaro, a developmental behavioral pediatrician with Siskin Children’s Institute, says.

Treatments may include speech or language therapy, which is used to address receptive, expressive, and/ or social language skills; occupational therapy, which can assist difficulty with sensory processing or differences; psychotherapy, which can help with identity development, emotional and behavioral regulation, and expressive skills; and others, depending on the needs of the individual. One particular challenge that many autistic people looking for support or intervention face is barriers to access. It can be difficult and time-consuming to even receive an initial diagnosis, thanks to obstacles like shortages of providers, insufficient insurance coverage, and even social stigma or general lack of education surrounding ASD. Studies have shown that early intervention can be highly effective in helping children with ASD navigate the world around them, which is why it’s so important for access to professional services to be increased.

If you’re someone without autism wondering how you can help, the answer is simpler than you might think: “Perhaps the biggest potential for support would be for our entire community to learn more about and from autistic individuals and be accepting of differences and inclusive,” advises Dr. Weigle. “Our current culture is created by and for neurotypical people. By making modifications and accommodations, our world then becomes more accessible to neurodivergent people.”

Parkinson’s Disease By Anna Hill

P

arkinson’s disease – a progressive nervous system disorder – is an incredibly diverse disease that looks different for everyone diagnosed with it. Here, we shed some light on the wide range of symptoms it can cause, as well as what treatment plans might involve for those diagnosed with the disease.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects a specific area of the brain called the substantia nigra. This structure, located in the midbrain, plays an important role in the brain’s function, particularly regarding TARECK eye movement, motor planning, rewardKADRIE, MD seeking, learning, and addiction. ParkinNeurologist, son’s compromises this area of the brain CHI Memorial by killing off dopaminergic neurons, Medical Staff which are the nervous system’s primary source of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in the brain functions mentioned above.

Symptoms When someone has Parkinson’s disease, the symptoms of it usually develop gradually, and the progression of these symptoms can vary greatly among individuals. Some of the primary symptoms of the disease include: • Tremor • Stiffness / limb rigidity • Slowness of movement (bradykinesia) • Difficulty with gait and balance

However, there are a number of other symptoms that might arise, including:

• Cramping muscles

• Soft speech or a hoarse voice

• Drooling

• Small, untidy handwriting (micrographia)

• Involuntary movements (dyskinesia) • Walking with short, rapid steps

• Shuffling gait • Cognitive impairment

• Constipation • Fatigue • Sleep disorders • Incontinence • Mood disorders • Loss of smell

• Lightheadedness

Causes “There is no single, definitive cause of Parkinson’s disease,” says Dr. Tareck Kadrie, a neurologist on staff at CHI Memorial. “It is likely a combination of genetic, environmental, and unknown factors.” Research estimates that genetics

causes somewhere between 10 and 20% of Parkinson’s cases, and certain genetic mutations have been linked to Parkinson’s. Environmental and lifestyle risk factors are varied. Head trauma, especially repeated head trauma, as well as exposure to certain chemicals, pesticides, or HealthScopeMag.com

• Loss of taste • Excessive sweating

Parkinson’s affects people in different ways and with varying severity. However, there are stages of the disease that are guided by typical progression patterns. In stage one of the disease, the person experiences mild symptoms that usually don’t interfere significantly with daily life, such as changes in posture, walking, or tremor or movement symptoms that occur on one side of the body. In stage two of the disease, movement symptoms typically begin to affect both sides of the body. Stage three is considered to be the middle stage of the disease’s progression, and loss of balance and slow movements become common. At stage four, symptoms are often severe and limit the person’s ability to live and function successfully on their own. Stage five – the most advanced stage – often restricts the person to a wheelchair or bed, with around-the-clock care required. At this point, hallucinations and delusions may affect the individual with the disease.

42

• Decreased facial movement

heavy metals can potentially increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s. “It is more likely to develop in males than in females,” adds Dr. Kadrie. “Advancing age also makes one more susceptible to the disease. The average age of onset is approximately 60 years of age.”

Diagnosis Just as there is no one definitive cause of Parkinson’s disease, there is also no one definitive method of diagnosing it. Commonly, your physician will first make note of key symptoms, such as tremors or trouble with movement, and patients will often be referred to a neurologist following this. The neurologist will then review your symptoms, medical history, and any physical or neurological exam results. Some of the tests that might be administered include a dopamine transporter scan (DaTscan), though many patients do not require this for a diagnosis to be made. Other imaging tests such

as an MRI, PET scan, or brain ultrasound might be administered, primarily to rule out other conditions. Some doctors confirm the diagnosis by prescribing Parkinson’s medication to see if the patient’s symptoms improve as a result.

Treatment While there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, there are a variety of treatments available for it. Medications are available that can help manage primary symptoms such as tremors or difficulty with movement, and other medications might also be prescribed to treat secondary symptoms such as depression. Depending on the advancement of the disease, surgical treatments might also be considered. Clinical trials might also be an option. Therapies, as well as lifestyle changes, are also often recommended as treatment methods. “Formal physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy are often helpful in

managing disease,” says Dr. Kadrie. “It is also important to address cognitive impairment, sleep disorders, and mood disorders, which are often seen. Chewing and swallowing impairment can be seen later in the disease and will need to be managed.” If someone diagnosed with Parkinson’s isn’t already exercising regularly, an exercise program might be recommended, as physical activity can help maintain balance, muscle strength, and flexibility. However, it’s important to consult with your doctor before beginning, as certain types of exercise can elevate the risk of falling for someone with movement or balance issues. If you’re struggling mentally with a Parkinson’s diagnosis, support groups may be available in your area and can offer resources as well as an environment to help you cope. If you’re experiencing symptoms that aren’t being addressed, be sure to let your doctor know, as it’s not unusual for comprehensive treatment plans to shift and change over time. HealthScopeMag.com

WavelinQ 4F EndoAVF System This procedure offers a non-surgical vascular access option for chronic kidney patients undergoing dialysis.

Dialysis is a common treatment for people with failing kidneys to help remove waste from the blood. In order to receive dialysis treatment, patients must first undergo a procedure to create a point of access to the bloodstream for the machine. This access point allows blood to be drawn from the body, filtered through the machine, and then returned clean.

What Is It?

An arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creates a direct connection between a vein and an artery in the patient’s arm for physicians to administer hemodialysis. AVF is preferred by many patients because it is longer-lasting and has a lower risk of infection and serious complications compared to other vascular access options. WavelinQ is a minimally invasive procedure that creates an AVF without an open surgery.

How Does It Work?

A surgical AVF is created by dissecting a patient’s vein, moving it, and then sewing it to an artery. The surgical wound is then closed with stitches and heals within a few weeks. WavelinQ creates this connection between a vein and an artery without the need for open surgery. Two thin devices are inserted into the artery and the vein through needle punctures, magnets align the devices, a connection is established, and then the doctor removes the devices. The arm will then heal with no need for stitches.

What Are the Benefits?

Compared to traditional AV fistula surgery, some benefits of the WavelinQ 4F EndoAVF System include: MINIMALLY INVASIVE PROCEDURE. This procedure is done without the need for open surgery and can be completed with local or regional anesthesia. FASTER HEALING TIME. The small needle punctures heal quickly with minimal need for wound care, and stitches are not required. REDUCED RISK OF SCARRING. This procedure avoids surgical incisions and the scarring they can cause, as well as minimizes the risk of arm disfigurement that can come with open surgery.

CEREC Same-Day Crowns If you are looking for a quick and effective way to restore your smile, this same-day procedure might be the perfect solution.

Why You Might Need a Dental Crown Though dental crowns can resolve cosmetic concerns, like covering discolored or misshapen teeth, more often they are used to protect and restore function to the teeth. Crowns add a layer of protection to the tooth that can prevent weakened teeth from breaking, restore teeth that are already broken, or help keep bridges in place. Crowns are also beneficial after procedures such as root canals and dental implants to support the tooth. A damaged tooth that is broken or decaying can cause toothaches, tooth sensitivity, or discomfort while eating and drinking, and crowns can alleviate these symptoms. Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic, or CEREC, is a same-day crown procedure that uses computer-aided design and manufacturing to restore your smile.

What Are the Benefits of CEREC? CEREC allows your dentist to place durable, highquality ceramic crowns in a single visit. Some of the many benefits of CEREC include: IMMEDIATE RESTORATION OF FUNCTION. If you have a temporary crown placed, you will need to be careful when eating or talking while your permanent crown is being manufactured in a lab. Same-day crowns eliminate this waiting period. REDUCED RISK OF INJURY. Temporary crowns can become loose or dislodged from the tooth, which can cause injury. Same-day crowns do not carry the same risk, and the procedure is less invasive as it requires less drilling and saves more of the tooth. SAVING TIME. Traditional crowns require one appointment to fit and an additional appointment to install. With CEREC crowns, you can have everything done in a single visit. INCREASED COMFORT. Temporary crowns are typically made of resin and are not fitted perfectly in your mouth. An ill-fitting crown can cause physical discomfort as well as anxiety about dislodging the crown. For anyone in need of replacement teeth, same-day crowns are a safe and convenient option. Whether your concerns are functional or cosmetic, CEREC can restore your smile in a single visit without all the fuss of temporary crowns.

48

HealthScopeMag.com

An Expert Weighs In “With the use of CAD/CAM in dentistry, crowns can be made same-day, eliminating the need to wait two to three weeks for crown fabrication with a temporary crown in place. Although the cost of a lab-fabricated and a same-day crown is about the same, patients save money by cutting out the other extra visit to come back for the permanent crown. This also means less time off work, travel, etc. One question we are often asked is about the strength. Recent studies have shown that CAD/CAM tooth restorations are just as successful as crowns made with traditional materials and techniques.” Mandy Shearer, DDS Dentist Soddy Daisy Smiles

LiteGait This partial-weight-bearing device allows patients to participate in therapeutic activities without the risk of falling.

If your ability to walk has been affected by a medical event, your doctor may recommend gait therapy as you go through rehabilitation. The purpose of gait therapy is to help patients regain the ability to walk safely and independently. LiteGait is a device that assists with gait therapy, making it accessible to more patients and safer for everyone.

What Is It?

LiteGait is a device that keeps patients balanced in proper position and reduces weight bearing as they focus on training their legs and pelvis to walk properly. LiteGait’s unique harness design can be adjusted to suit a variety of patients with differing therapeutic needs.

How Does It Work?

With a secure harness and a powerful lifting system, LiteGait allows patients to walk safely over a treadmill or the ground without the risk of falling. Physical therapists can adjust the weight-bearing mechanism to progressively increase the difficulty of therapeutic exercises as mobility improves. Patients can steadily build up coordination in their lower extremities as they work toward walking independently.

What Are the Benefits? HIGHLY ADJUSTABLE. Most patients can safely use LiteGait regardless of differences in size or therapeutic needs. A single LiteGait harness can be safely and comfortably fitted on a wide variety of patients. START GAIT TRAINING EARLIER. Therapists can adjust the weight-bearing load to precisely match what each patient can handle. This allows them to begin gait therapy earlier in the recovery process. IMPROVED THERAPY SESSIONS. Because the therapist does not have to worry about falls or balance concerns, they are free to focus fully on the patient. A single therapist can conduct a therapy session with LiteGait, aiding the patient with one-on-one attention that can improve outcomes. NO FEAR OF FALLING. Patients can walk comfortably regardless of any balance or coordination concerns with the confidence of knowing that they will not fall. This can reduce anxiety and make physical therapy less intimidating.

An Expert Weighs In “To optimize stroke recovery, research shows that patients maximize their neurologic potential when they are challenged by increasing the intensity of therapy, maximizing the number of steps taken, and engaging in activities that are stimulating and fun. The LiteGait equipment allows patients to increase stepping repetitions and explore their limits of stability while being safely supported by a harness. The LiteGait allows therapists to provide patients with an optimal blend of support and independence to meet their unique needs and lead to better functional outcomes.” Meredith Russell, PT, DPT, NCS, CSRS Physical Therapist Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation

Cone Beam CT Scanner This CT scan provides more detailed information than a typical dental X-ray.

When you have a complex dental issue, your dentist needs to have a clear understanding of how to treat you, and sometimes a traditional 2D X-ray doesn’t provide enough information. Cone beam CT (CBCT) scans create a 3D X-ray image that shows both the bones and soft tissues in your mouth and face. This allows your dentist to evaluate your dental structures, soft tissues, nerve paths, and facial bones with a single scan.

When Do You Need a CBCT Scan? Your dentist may order a CBCT scan when regular dental and facial X-rays will not suffice. Typically, CBCT scans are helpful with planning for surgery to remove impacted teeth, planning for dental implants, finding the origin of pain and diagnosing the issue, identifying issues with the jaw, and other complex situations.

How Does It Work? During a CBCT scan, you will either sit in a chair or lie back on an exam table to remain still throughout the procedure. The imaging machine will rotate around your head to quickly capture over 150 images from various angles, forming a single 3D image. A full scan of your mouth takes less than a minute to complete, and the process is even faster if your dentist only needs to look at a specific region of your mouth.

What Are the Benefits of CBCT Scans? HIGH - QUALITY IMAGES. Because CBCT scanners use

a focused X-ray beam, they can pinpoint the area your dentist needs to see and get a better quality image. PRECISE PLANNING. The wide variety of angles and the

variety of tissues that show up on these scans allows your dentist to get a complete look at your mouth. This helps them get a more accurate diagnosis to precisely tailor your treatment plan to suit your individual needs. REDUCED RADIATION. Compared to conventional CT

scans, CBCT scans expose you to lower amounts of radiation. There should be no immediate side effects from CBCT scanning, and no radiation remains in the patient’s body after a CBCT scan. Furthermore, the FDA states that the benefits of CT scans far outweigh potential risks.

An Expert Weighs In “CBCT has been a game-changing advancement in the field of dentistry. It allows us as practitioners to gain insight and knowledge beyond the typical two-dimensional image. Through this we can more predictably plan the placement of implants, detect fractures in teeth, better pinpoint areas of infection, detect pathologies, and so much more. As dentists, it simply elevates our level of practice to better serve our patients.” Kristen Conner, DMD Dentist Northpoint Dental Co.

3D Printing in Dentistry High-speed 3D printing expedites the process of dental restorations.

When it comes to dental restoration, most people want results quickly. Whether you have aesthetic concerns or you’re dealing with discomfort from damaged teeth, getting your smile restored as efficiently as possible is important. Normally, if you need dentures, a bridge, orthodontic aligners, or anything of the sort, your dentist would rely on an external lab to manufacture your dental device. With 3D printing technology, however, these can all be created at your dentist’s office.

How Does It Work?

After your dentist completes a CBCT scan, they will use a 3D model of your mouth to custom design a dental device. The printer will then begin to quickly construct the device with high-quality materials according to the exact dimensions of the 3D model. The process of 3D printing is fast and efficient, and the result is a dental device that is a precise fit for your unique dental needs – created right in your dentist’s office rather than a separate lab.

The Benefits of 3D Printing in Dentistry PRECISE FITTING. 3D printing works with digital impres-

sions from 3D scanners to detect and record every detail of your mouth, resulting in dental prosthetics that fit exactly how they should. REDUCED WAIT TIME. 3D printing allows clinics to

produce dental devices much faster than traditional methods. Dentures, for instance, take 70-80% less time to produce with this technology. FEWER APPOINTMENTS NEEDED. Because in-house 3D

printing streamlines the production process, patients typically need just two appointments as opposed to the four or five visits traditionally required for fitting and placing dental devices. LESS ROOM FOR ERROR. Manual methods of produc-

ing dental devices are labor intensive and leave room for human error. Models are typically shipped back and forth between the dentist’s office and the production lab several times before the device is properly fitted for the patient. With in-house 3D printing, the process is much more reliable and the results are more precise.

Value-Based Rotator Cuff Repair This surgical technique maximizes patient benefits and minimizes costs.

Rotator cuff injury is one of the most common types of musculoskeletal injury in the United States, and it can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. Patients with torn rotator cuffs typically experience anywhere from mild to severe pain as well as loss of mobility in the affected arm and shoulder. For more severe tears, surgery is often unavoidable. There are steep costs associated with surgical repairs, but this value-based hybrid approach can significantly reduce the cost of surgery without compromising the quality of results.

The Technique As the name suggests, this technique adds value for patients. More and more, people are looking for outpatient surgery options as well as ways to reduce the costs associated with these procedures. The value-based rotator cuff repair technique serves to meet these patient demands. First, this technique replaces costly anchors that have previously been used to repair rotator cuffs with an innovative suturing technique. These anchors can cost several hundred dollars each, and this adds up quickly – some rotator cuff injuries require three or four anchors to repair. Additionally, this new technique is performed as a minimally invasive arthroscopic outpatient procedure. This means quicker recovery time and, in most cases, no need for an overnight stay.

The Benefits REDUCED COST. Because this technique eliminates the need

for anchors, there is less cost associated with the procedure. For more severe tears, this technique can save patients over $1,000. EQUAL OR IMPROVED OUTCOME. This technique can achieve

the same strong results as the anchored approach without leaving inert material behind in the body. INDIVIDUALIZED APPROACH. Without being limited by an-

chor configuration, your doctor has more control over the procedure. They can create a specialized plan to address your unique needs and use the suturing technique that will give you the best possible outcome. OUTPATIENT PROCEDURE. This technique is performed

arthroscopically rather than with open surgery, which is far less invasive and leads to faster healing. Because it can be performed as an outpatient procedure, patients save both time and additional hospital costs.

Immediate Dental Implants This single surgery option is ideal for patients who want a quick solution to their tooth loss.

Tooth loss is a common dental problem, and it is one that many people prefer to deal with quickly. Whether you have lost a tooth to trauma or periodontal disease, a gap in your smile can leave you feeling less confident. Beyond that, losing a tooth causes the surrounding gums and jawbone to recede and weaken, which can cause problems with eating, speaking, and overall oral health in the long run. Immediate dental implants are one of the quickest and most permanent options for replacing lost teeth and restoring your oral health.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is placed in the jawbone to replace the lost tooth root. As it heals, the jaw bone will fuse with the implant to create a sturdy, permanent root for the replacement tooth. Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth or several, and unlike other options, they also help preserve healthy neighboring teeth. Because they fuse with your bone, dental implants look, feel, and function just like natural teeth. This procedure preserves the jawbone and actually stimulates new growth as bone cells work to anchor the screws in place. This sturdy solution restores not only your smile, but the health of your entire mouth and jaw.

The Benefits of Immediate Dental Implants SINGLE SURGERY PROCEDURE. Unlike traditional dental

implants, which require separate appointments for tooth extraction and implant placement, immediate dental implants allow your periodontist to do both in the same visit. This expedites recovery and restores your smile faster. HEALTHY AND NATURAL SMILE. Because the implant pro-

cedure is done right after the tooth extraction, your gums will heal around the implant. This makes the implant look more natural, as the tooth will appear to emerge from the gums rather than simply sitting on top of them. SAME - DAY TOOTH REPLACEMENT. Immediately after

the implants are placed, you can receive a temporary replacement tooth to provide aesthetic relief until your permanent replacement is ready. This is particularly beneficial for patients missing front teeth.

60

HealthScopeMag.com

An Expert Weighs In “Techniques and technologies with implants are constantly improving. One of our most appreciated procedures is our immediate implants. If a patient comes in with a broken front tooth, we can remove the tooth, place an implant, and place a cosmetic temporary crown in one appointment with no sutures! It helps the gum tissue heal very naturally and creates an ideal foundation for the patient’s new final crown.” Elizabeth Felts Randall, DMD, MS Periodontist Chattanooga Periodontics

OraQuick HIV Test This rapid test is an important step forward in combating the HIV epidemic in the United States.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that weakens the immune system and inhibits the body’s natural ability to fight off diseases and infections. According to the CDC, HIV currently affects over 1.1 million people in the United States, and nearly 1 in 7 of these people do not know they are living with HIV. A major part of the CDC’s plan to end the HIV epidemic is increasing knowledge of status, or increasing the number of people living with HIV who are aware that they are HIV positive. The OraQuick HIV test, the first to be approved for athome testing, is a big step forward in ending the country’s HIV epidemic. OraQuick provides rapid results and makes getting tested easier and more comfortable for people who are at risk of infection.

How Does It Work? Rapid HIV tests work by detecting antibodies and can be administered with a finger prick or an oral swab. OraQuick tests can be administered at home or in clinical settings and provide reliable, simple-to-read results. The test only requires a swab of the gums, and test results come back in just 20 minutes. In clinics, the test will be administered in a private room where patients can wait comfortably until the results come back.

The Benefits of OraQuick RAPID RESULTS. Waiting for the results of an HIV test is

nerve-wracking, but patients only have to wait for 20 minutes with OraQuick. This also means less time spent in clinics, which can also be anxiety-inducing. PRIVACY. Patients can take OraQuick tests in the comfort of

their own home or in a comfortable, private waiting room. This privacy reduces the discomfort that many people feel about getting tested, which means that more people will make the choice to get tested. POWERFUL INFORMATION. The CDC recognizes that inform-

ing more people of their HIV status is an important part of ending the HIV epidemic. OraQuick allows people to make informed decisions that keep themselves and others healthy. ACCESSIBILITY. OraQuick makes it easier for people who

are at risk of infection to get HIV tests. Some clinics offer free tests so that more people can access this life-saving information.

Digital Impressions With digital 3D scanners, dental impressions are more efficient than ever.

If you are in need of dental work like crowns, dental implants, or dentures, your dentist will first take an impression of your teeth and mouth. Traditionally, this has involved biting down on dental putty to create a mold – an unpleasant experience for patients with sensitive teeth or a strong gag reflex. With digital impressions, however, your dentist can use a scanner to create a digital 3D image of your mouth.

How Does It Work? Your dentist will use a wand-like scanning tool to capture all the details of the hard and soft tissues of your mouth. As the device scans, computer software creates a 3D replica of your mouth that is highly accurate and can be used for a variety of dental work. The entire process typically takes less than two minutes.

What Are the Benefits? EFFICIENCY. Unlike traditional dental impressions,

the process for digital impressions is fast and efficient. The scanner can create an accurate 3D impression in under two minutes, much faster than waiting for dental putty to harden. ACCURACY. Your dentist will be able to monitor the

impression as the device scans your mouth and ensure that everything is accurate and there are no errors in the scan. Furthermore, a retake of the scan is much easier than redoing a dental putty impression if something is not right. FASTER RESTORATION. Whether you are going to the

dentist for crowns, dentures, dental implants, or any other restoration, digital impressions expedite the process. While traditional impressions involve creating a physical cast of your teeth after the mold is set, a digital 3D image is ready to go immediately after the scan is complete. A MORE ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE. Digital impressions

eliminate the need to sit with unpleasant dental putty in your mouth. Many patients dislike dental putty either for the unpleasant taste, the way it triggers their gag reflex, or how it irritates their sensitive teeth.

hat started out as a volunteer opportunity has turned into a lifelong friendship for friends Susan, Lee Anne, and Suzanne. The trio originally connected while serving in Junior League of Chattanooga, but didn’t become close friends until years later when they found themselves all taking the same tennis lessons. While physical health and wellness may have been part of what connected them initially, these ladies have now added a layer of emotional well-being to their lives that has been made possible by the true support and friendship of one another. What are some valuable traits of the other ladies that make them such an integral part of your support system? LAW There is great loyalty and trust in our friendship. Susan and Suzanne are both great listeners, encouragers, and have been true friends through all life’s ups and downs. STF We love being together and sharing our stories, and we always have each other’s backs. Our children were friends growing up, so we always had similar outlooks. Why do you think it’s necessary to have a support system in place? SEF I think it’s important to have friends to cheer you on and encourage you. It’s also good to have someone to confide in and get guidance from when you need it. LAW It is so important to have special people in your life to whom you can express your honest feelings, voice your difficulties, and bounce ideas off of. You have to be able to pour out your thoughts, problems, and concerns to understanding and sympathetic friends.

How has your relationship changed through the years? SEF When we first met, it was more about common interests and having fun. Now, it’s about being there for each other to celebrate happy things but also giving support during hard times while still doing the fun stuff! LAW We have gone through so many decades now. Our younger years were about raising children and all of the life experiences that came with that. As younger women, we were all about fashion, trends, shoes, hairstyles, trips, and having fun. Having fun is still a priority, but we have gone from shopping for ourselves to shopping for our grandchildren. How do you approach wellness, both separately and as a group? SEF I play tennis, golf, pickleball, and work out. As a group, we try to help each other eat healthy, and we all like to go for walks when we travel together. LAW Our personal health is much more a part of our conversations now. As we age, our health and wellness have become such a priority. We share our own experiences, recipes, advice, and tips.

What’s the most important thing you’ve taught each other since meeting?

What are your favorite ways to bond and lift each other up?

LAW Our families mean the world to us, but we have to carve out time to keep friends in our lives as well. My girlfriends have enriched my life in so many ways.

SEF We try to meet once a week for lunch to talk and check in with each other. We talk about what our kids are doing, what’s happening in our lives, and just anything that we need to talk about.

STF These girls are so sharp, and they keep me on my toes. Lee Anne has an eye for decorating and style, and Susan is a great leader and organizer. I just tag along in amazement of these two talented girls.

STF We have special occasions that we celebrate. We just helped with a wedding shower for Lee Anne’s daughter, Madison! It was so fun to get together with all our good friends to wish her family well with this exciting event.

Vanishing Veins — TOP TIPS FOR COVERING UP YOUR VARICOSE VEINS

The weather is heating up, and that means the season for skirts, shorts, and swimsuits is near. Yet for many women, showing some leg is the last thing on their mind … all thanks to varicose veins. Although these blue and purple bulges are generally benign, their presence can cause some women to feel self-conscious about their appearance. Varicose veins can’t technically be cured, but there are several things you can do to hide them temporarily. Here, we offer up our best tips and tricks to making those pesky veins less visible.

THE QUICK FIX Body Makeup: Just like applying concealer

to cover up a breakout, you can also cover up varicose veins using concealer specifically designed for the legs and body. Your best bet will be a waterproof product, especially if you’re planning to be poolside or at the beach. To make the concealer less noticeable, you can apply a layer of body foundation over the length of your legs – this will ensure an even skin tone. Self-Tanning Lotion: Although not as quick

of a solution as makeup, self-tanning lotion can help camouflage your varicose veins over time; plus, by using self-tanning lotion regularly, you’ll benefit from a healthy glow and moisturized skin. Compression Stockings: Worn under your

clothing or integrated into your outfit, compression stockings are a classic example of having your cake and eating it too. Not only do they help cover up your veins, but they also promote improved blood flow in your legs, which could prevent varicose veins from developing further.

By Mary Beth Wallace

LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS Boosting Your Circulation: Talk to your doctor about starting an exercise program.

Yoga and walking are two low-impact activities that could really make a difference in your circulation while also reducing the appearance of varicose veins. Other ways to improve your circulation include staying hydrated, avoiding long periods of sitting or standing, elevating your legs when resting, and wearing compression socks during the day. Medical Procedures: If your varicose veins are particularly bothersome, you may

want to seek professional treatment. Medical procedures such as sclerotherapy, laser therapy, and vein surgery – also referred to as ligation and vein stripping – can remove any present veins; however, these treatments cannot prevent veins from becoming varicose in the future.

Getting to the Root of This Haircare Conundrum By Mary Beth Wallace

It’s the question that leaves everyone – beauty experts included – scratching their heads: How often do you really need to wash your hair? The answer, of course, isn’t so simple. The frequency with which you should shampoo depends on a number of factors ranging from your hair type and your lifestyle to personal preference. Wash too often, and you’ll strip your hair of its natural protective oils – drying it out and making it more prone to breakage. Not washing enough will cause those natural oils to build up on the scalp, leading to greasiness, itchiness, and other scalp issues. In fact, going too long between washes can even impede hair growth. First, it’s important to understand the role shampoo plays in your haircare routine. Just like your body, your hair gets “dirty” over time thanks to things like sweat and air pollution. Shampoo is a cleansing agent that removes impurities (think: dirt, dust, and product buildup) from your hair. Finding the best frequency for using shampoo will help you sport a clean mane without stripping it of its natural oils.

Dos and Don’ts for Washing Your Hair Ready to lather up? Make sure you’re washing your hair correctly with these tips.

Do focus on the scalp.

So, how often should you wash your hair? Some people can go two or three days between washes. You may want to lather up more frequently if: • You have thin/fine hair. • You have oily hair. • You live in a humid environment. • You exercise/sweat daily. • You use a lot of styling products. On the other hand, some people can wash less frequently without any issues. This might be you if: • You have thick hair. • You have textured hair. • Your hair is dry or damaged. • Your hair is styled (for example, a blowout). One other factor to consider is age. As you grow older, your hair follicles tend to produce less oil, meaning hair is more likely to feel dry – and your frequency in hair washing should decrease accordingly. In other words, your haircare routine in your 20s will probably look a little different than when you reach your 40s and 50s. No matter your hair type, age, or environment, if you notice your hair getting visibly oil, grimy, or smelly, you could probably benefit from a shampoo. And, according to cosmetic experts, you shouldn’t go more than 14 days without a wash. The longer you go without shampoo, the more dirt, excess oil, and air pollution build up on your scalp. As you can see, washing your hair isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Determining the right frequency for you may take some trial and error, but it’s important to maintaining a healthy head of hair!

A common mistake, many people spend time massaging shampoo into their strands, when scrubbing the scalp is key to an effective shampoo. After all, you need a healthy scalp to grow healthy hair.

Don’t overdo the product. Chances are, you’re using more product than necessary – and that’s just money down the drain. For most people, a dollop of shampoo roughly the size of a raspberry will suffice.

Do find products you like, and keep buying them. Hair appreciates consistency, so there’s no need to mix it up when it comes to your go-to shampoo. Any claim that hair gets “used to” a certain product after using it a while – therefore becoming ineffective – is simply untrue.

Don’t forget the conditioner. If you’re regularly skipping the conditioner, think again; conditioner nourishes your hair and helps to protect it from damage. Just remember that it only needs to be applied to the bottom twothirds of your hair.

Do finish with a cold rinse. This will help you lock in moisture, resulting in shinier, smoother hair.

Her Story Every woman has a story to tell, and no two stories are alike. Meet the women who have persevered through challenges and tribulations and come out the other side stronger than ever. These unique individuals have seen their fair share of adversity but continue to inspire those around them with the lessons they have learned and their love of life. Read on for four truly motivating stories by the women who experienced them firsthand. Photography by Rich Smith / Photos taken on location at Alleia

In 2014, I had the opportunity to start a tech company to solve a huge problem I faced as a parent. I had never worked so hard in my life – endless 80-hour weeks, months of sleeping three to four hours a night, working holidays, sacrificing my health, and ironically enough, precious family time. I spent the better part of three years marinating in cortisol. To cope, I was washing down a couple of Benadryl with a bottle and a half of Sauvignon Blanc almost nightly, waking at 3 a.m., and then on to a full day of CEO-ing. Rinse and repeat. Several tests confirmed that my body was revolting from all the stress. At 42 years old, I had the cardiovascular health of a 65-year-old. I remember Thanksgiving Day 2016: I woke up and couldn’t move my body out of the bed. My husband had to physically move

my legs and help me stand up. Overnight, it was like I’d turned into an old woman. I went to several doctors only to find I had been having recurring flare-ups of the Epstein-Barr virus over the past year. This last flare-up finally got my attention. After three years of operating my company, the money dried up, the product still didn’t work, the team was falling apart, and I was a shell of a person. My skin was intact, but not much else. It would be another six months before I finally dissolved the company. The experience brought me to my knees with the deepest exhaustion I’ve ever experienced. It produced debilitating burnout, compounded by humiliation that would take a full year to recover from. With the help of an amazing team of professionals, I recovered. I found

my way out of the unsustainable race that was literally leading me to an early death. As I’ve learned, too much stress does that. And collapsing is not resting. But the most important part of my recovery was confronting deeply held beliefs about my worth, identity, and cultural messages around “success.” I had to re-evaluate my unrealistic expectations. I had to realign with my core values. And I had to deconstruct a belief that having needs is synonymous with weakness. If I’m honest, this work will take a lifetime. Every day I feel lured back to the grind. And every day I practice silence and solitude, honor constraints, find the easy path, and reconnect with what matters most.

HER STORY

I’m a 10-year transplant from Detroit, Michigan. I am a mother, a wife, an entrepreneur, an author, and a woman of faith. I’ve always enjoyed being a mother to my two beautiful daughters. My husband and I raised them in a healthy and loving environment. Then, one day our world turned completely upside down when I experienced a mother’s worst nightmare involving my eldest child. She spiraled downward into major depression, which led to several suicide attempts. I did everything I could to make sure I provided my children with the best life and all of the love and attention they needed. I believe most of us parents want our children to excel in academics, form great friendships, and avoid being negatively influenced by their peers. None of us want to experience them spiraling into depression. Or worst yet, into suicide. When this experience happened, it shook me to my core because all I wanted for my child was for her to be everything I had imagined for her life. Well, as we all know, life can throw us some unexpected curveballs. And when it happens to your child, it’s a feeling of helplessness. I am happy to say that my daughter is still alive today and living out her life’s purpose. However, I wanted to share this experience with the world and wrote a book, Three Failed Attempts One Faithful God, because I knew there had to be other mothers who needed to be encouraged by my story of victory. I also formed a Facebook support group– titled Save Our Descendants – which was created for parents who have children battling depression. It includes videos of real people sharing their stories of triumph over depression and other resources provided by local mental health professionals and educators. Working to prevent youth suicide is a priority for me. I’m committed to working together with others so that our children can live their life’s purpose and reach their full potential.

HER STORY

When asked to share my story, I immediately thought, “Which one?” Divorce, the loss of a child, getting laid off, health issues, and weight management all came to mind. I guess anyone who has lived 69 years has a pretty long list. My story’s most significant occurrence was certainly the death of my daughter, Lori, after a six-year battle with leukemia. A desire to make her short life really count and to help other families like ours has fueled my life’s work since 1984. Volunteering for many causes that helped families of sick children was the route I found eased the pain of losing her; at least, it kept me so busy I didn’t focus on all I had lost. Volunteering for the effort to build a Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Chattanooga was one of those causes. When I was laid off from a great job with TVA, I knew God was paving the way for me to make my volunteer “job” my real job. Now, 32 years later, I remember how awful it felt to be laid off and how relieved I was when I knew Ronald McDonald House would become my life’s work. I have loved every day of making it possible for families to be together when their child is sick. Comfort food is part of RMH hospitality, and there’s always something good to eat here. I admit that food has always been my comfort too. I love to eat out with friends and cook and bake, and I often made poor choices during stressful times. About 18 months ago, I joined Weight Watchers and found the online tool so easy. Today I am 65 pounds lighter and still working on the last 10! I even gave away all my larger sizes to make sure I didn’t backslide. A health condition that has plagued me since 2004 has improved to the point that I expect to be “fired” from my doctor at my next visit! I know I’m not the only one with a story, but I’m thankful to be able to share mine.

HER STORY

As far as anyone knows, we are a nice normal family, but normal is not always the truth and can be very unforgiving. From a very young age, I equated normal with belonging. I was adopted as an infant, and from the beginning, I was on a journey to belong. Life would later teach me that this push toward normal doesn’t create genuine belonging. How you define normal changes depending on what phase of life you are in or what challenges you may be facing. The shifts in my life have proven this true. My husband Chris and I have been married for 26 years. We married young, tackled college, and hurdled moves and other challenges from early on. We have five boys ranging in age from 3 to 21. Six days after having our fifth son, we made the trek to UT Knoxville to move our 18-year-old into his college dorm. Nursing a newborn at the age of 43 in the parking lot of Brown Hall while college freshmen carried plastic bins into their dorms was not normal! Currently, our boys are in five different life phases: college, high school, middle school, elementary, and preschool. This spread lends itself to many scenarios that stretch normal. Some of the normal in our life I can count on to stay the same – piles of laundry, nerf bullets in random places – but other things shift and force us away from the safety of normal. I’m honestly thankful for the view apart from normal that I’ve been given. I know it’s shaping me to be a better wife, mom, and friend to others. We all will find ourselves far from the shore of what seems normal at some point in our lives – at times we may be further out than others. But no matter how far out you are, you are not alone! Let go of the norms that isolate you; embrace the discomfort; be present where you are. God has something for you there that He will use for good!

Survivor Story

W

omen these days lead very busy lives. Constantly moving from one task to the next and often caring for others means tiredness is inevitable. So, when Sharon Ledford began feeling exhausted at seemingly random times, she dismissed it as part of life. What was really taking place, however, was a series of smaller heart attacks that were leading up to an even bigger cardiovascular event. What follows is Sharon’s personal story and a -rst-hand account of why you should always take signs and symptoms seriously.

Sharon Ledford It was a beautiful spring day. I had been working around the pool and in the yard. I realized I did not have the strength to get the shovel into the ground to dig up a plant. I had pain in both arms and shoulders, pain radiating up my neck and jaw. I thought I had done too much and stressed my body. This type of experience was happening quite often lately. I would be full of energy one day and tired the next. There were times I would look in the mirror and think I looked pale. Some days I was simply pushing myself. Less than a week later, I was awakened with nausea and cold sweats. I got up and went to the bathroom; barely able to stand, I laid on the cold tile floor. Once I was able, I got back in bed and fell asleep. The next morning, I called my son and told him I didn’t think I could watch my grandson and that I thought I had a stomach bug. As the morning progressed, I started feeling better. I had an appointment for a yearly physical. I decided to go in. This is when my mind began to piece together the symptoms I had been experiencing. It was slowly making sense. I asked my doctor to check my troponin level (these are levels that show heart injury), administer an EKG, and check my carotid arteries. I knew to ask for these tests due to my husband’s issues. Everything looked good. My doctor ordered a stress test for the following week. Less than three hours later, I started feeling bad. I checked my blood pressure. It was high. I called my doctor and told her. She said my troponin level results would not be back until the following week due to the long Memorial Day weekend. She urged me to go to the ER. I kept thinking to myself, this is not happening. When I arrived at the emergency room, I walked up to the desk and told them I was having chest pain. I remember thinking to myself, “Really Sharon? Are you really?” This is typical for women to doubt and somewhat feel guilty for complaining. They immediately did an EKG which was now abnormal and drew a troponin level that indicated I was experiencing a heart attack. I called my family. I was transferred by ambulance downtown to the main campus cardiac catheterization lab. The results indicated five blockages. They scheduled open-heart bypass surgery. The doctor told my children that if I had not gotten to the hospital when I did that I would not have survived. He told them that I had experienced a few small heart attacks previously but that my heart muscle was not damaged. As I look back and reflect, I can pinpoint the times I was experiencing cardiovascular events. The doctor told my children, “Your mom won’t know how bad she felt until she realizes how good she feels.” This was so true! Most women are caregivers and always put everything before their needs. Conditions with the heart are a combination of genetics, lifestyle, and life events. You need to be aware of your body, know your numbers, and be mindful of symptoms. Do not dismiss yourself. I am so grateful to be alive!

We built a business connection initially, and over the years it has grown into a true friendship. Nicole is my caring, strong, and straight-to-the-point friend. Her determination and support of those around her inspires me. Her views on building community and collaborating have helped me to grow professionally and personally, whether she realizes it or not. We both run a collaborative studio workspace we opened this year. It amazes me to look back on the time three years ago when she reached out randomly with an opportunity to move into a small studio space. Now, we have expanded into a bigger building with more room to grow. It’s a blessing to have a friend who is so driven to reach their goals and dreams. I met Caroline 10 years ago when we were college kids in Athens, Georgia. We became fast friends — and since then, we’ve become family. In a way, we’ve grown up together, and our friendship has been a defining factor in who we’ve each become. Throughout the years of shared experiences, change, and growth, I’ve always been inspired by Caroline’s curiosity, kindness, and commitment to selfbetterment. When Caroline has a question, she finds the answer. When she wants to develop a skill, she makes a plan. When she learns something new, she integrates it into her worldview. And when she makes a promise to herself, she follows through. In her interactions with others, Caroline practices empathy, patience, and compassion. She communicates respectfully and tries hard to understand perspectives that differ from her own. She isn’t afraid to examine her own beliefs and behaviors, either — altering them as needed to live in greater alignment with her values. Over the last five years, I’ve had the privilege of knowing Amanda through church in Red Bank. She is welcoming, encouraging, radiates energy, wears a contagious smile, has a listening ear, and displays compassion to those around her. She’s been an encouragement to me spiritually, but in recent years I’ve been inspired by her lifestyle and her artistic ability. Amanda is mindful and lives with intention in almost every aspect in her life. She is intentional with her relationships and exemplifies this quality as a mother to her two young boys. She is passionate about finding opportunities to help the environment, but also takes the time to help serve the people within the community. Amanda is well-known in the community as a volunteer, but also as an accomplished artist. Amanda is able to summarize and express who she is through the art she paints. It’s not just the image or patterns that she creates, but the intentional time that was spent before putting it onto canvas. She uniquely makes her own oil paints out of the soil from the ground we walk on every day. She is intentional about the resources she uses, but also is able to tell stories through the patterns she so intricately paints. Her mindfulness has inspired me, and others, to have a new perspective, to lend a helping hand, to slow down, to appreciate the beauty in God’s creation, and to live life every day with a purpose.

Musings on Motherhood Bringing a child into the world is an incredible event. But as wonderful as being a new mom is, it can also be a very challenging time with its fair share of ups and downs. Here, three local ladies talk about their journey through recently having a child and what they have done that has helped them enjoy this season of life even more.

Carolyn and Gideon

Kelli Boitnott “I knew my life would change dramatically when I became a mom, and it has. It’s both wonderful and hard. Right now, I don’t have the independence to travel or go on challenging hikes or even to drink my coffee while it is still hot. But what is lost in autonomy is made up for in gummy smiles, precious giggles, and having a frontrow seat to this amazing show of human development. I remind myself to appreciate each season as it comes. My son won’t always need me like this, but right now he does, and I’m thankful I can be present for Kelli and Xavier it. Rather than focusing on what I can’t do right now, I try to remind myself to focus on all the special opportunities I do have. This child is a marvel! And being his parent is a whole new kind of adventure.”

Kayla and Link

Carolyn West “One thing new parents in this generation are not lacking is advice. We get it everywhere, from Google to the cashiers at the grocery stores. As a type-A, firsttime parent, advice overload was one of my biggest challenges. I realized that I can rigidly follow all the schedules and buy all the sensory toys to help him with his milestones, but he will get there when he is ready. Now, my favorite mantras are ‘This too shall pass’ and ‘Let feelings be.’ We can help, teach, and assist them as much as we loving parents want to, but always remember to give grace for the learning curve. It’s okay that babies have bad days, too. Growing is hard stuff – nothing a little cuddling and rocking can’t help.”

Kayla Jones “On November 15th, we welcomed our third sweet baby boy into our family. We now have an almost-4-year-old, a 2-year-old, and a newborn. But of course, with every new baby, there are new routines and challenges to face. I started feeling overwhelmed with three young children. I was also finding myself crying more than usual. One thing that helped me and continues to help me is the community I have surrounded myself with. Of course, my husband has been absolutely incredible and supportive, but my community has also really lifted me up – specifically my brothers and sisters in Christ. For more than two months, we had meals delivered. I constantly had friends checking in on me and sending me prayers. Several friends offered to watch the boys. This was all very helpful as we don’t have much family here in Chattanooga. My advice to new mothers is to not do this alone – find yourself a good community to help you in challenging times.” HealthScopeMag.com

You + Social Media Relationship Status: It’s Complicated

BY OLIVIA HALVERSON

F

or better or worse, the emergence and rapid evolution of social media have changed society as we know it. In realtime, users can post statuses, share photos, videos, blogs – you name it, and there’s probably a specific platform for it. These spaces were built to foster creative expression, community building, and career advancement among other positive initiatives. While many platforms have proven successful in these aims, studies have revealed that overuse or misuse of social media can lead to negative mental health outcomes. It’s important that social media users establish boundaries with their channels and curate networking spaces that leave them feeling fulfilled instead of drained. Here, with insights from a local professional, we will explore the many ways in which you can fashion a healthier relationship with social media. John Daum is a content creator for First Things First, a Chattanooga-based relationship resource center devoted to helping families start and stay strong. As a content creator, Daum has found that social media can be an excellent tool for disseminating helpful information to people who otherwise wouldn’t be reachable. He’s also seen how social media can be critically useful in times of crisis to organize actions that bring relief and save lives. “This is social media and humanity at their best,” he says. “On the flip side, social media can also be a tool for spreading toxicity, misinformation, and hate speech,” Daum explains.

92

HealthScopeMag.com

Overconsumption of such content can lead users to experience a variety of negative side effects including depression, anxiety, self-absorption, and feelings of isolation and inadequacy. “Social media platforms can be poor conduits for emotions, empathy, and genuine socialization,” says Daum. “This is why being a mindful user is critical.” So, how can you tell if your relationship with social media is unhealthy? To start, Daum suggests asking yourself the following questions. • Is my social media post more important than the experience itself? • Does social media isolate me from the people I'm with? • Is social media causing me to neglect my relationships and responsibilities? • Does social media ever keep me from getting sleep? • Are the ads negatively affecting my spending habits? • Does social media make me feel angry, envious, stressed, or sad? • Has social media become a coping mechanism for negative feelings or mental health issues that I need to address in a more proactive and productive way? If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, it’s probably time to set some healthy boundaries with your social media accounts. Here’s how to get started:

JOHN DAUM

Content Creator First Things First

1. Create goals for yourself that are measurable, reasonable, and achievable. “Most phones provide a weekly report of how you've spent time on them,” says Daum. “Take a good hard look at those reports, and use that data to create goals for yourself such as spending one less hour a week on social.” 2. Gamify your goals, and get family and friends on board. “Research suggests you'll be more successful by making a game or competition out of your goals,” says Daum. For example, reward the family member who uses social media the least each week with a special prize. 3. Silence those notifications. Daum has accounts on all the major platforms but makes a point to not engage with social media every day. “I keep notifications turned off so that I check social media when I want, not when it tells me to check it,” he says. 4. Take inventory of the accounts you follow. Unfollow accounts and channels with posts that make you feel overwhelmed, angry, less than, or insecure. Make it a point to only follow and engage with accounts that bring positivity, motivation, and inspiration into your life. 5. Surf the social web as a family. “My kids have introduced me to TikTok, and I'm amazed by the talented, hilarious, and informative content,” says Daum. “As a parent, this provides me a great opportunity to interact with my kids as we look at social media together and talk about it.” 6. Use your social media to bring something positive to a community. “I think there's a big difference between contributing, collaborating, and creating with other people on social media, versus simply consuming or conquering some digital real estate,” says Daum. “Picture the real human being on the other side of your screen and ask yourself, what positivity can you bring into their life?” Whether social media is inherently good or bad is a debate we’ll never resolve, but the way you use it and the boundaries you set around it can help make your social networking experience a positive one. According to Daum, you’ll know that you’ve been successful when you can say to yourself: “Social media is a constructive and healthy part of my balanced lifestyle.”

Balanced Counter the Impact of Life’s Many Demands With Intentional, Restorative Practices A life of balance looks different for everyone. Movement is Medicine

The Power of the Pause

Our bodies are fascinating machines that store energy, stress, emotion, and so much more. I’ve found that even the simplest movements can bring me back to alignment when I am not feeling quite right. Been sitting at your desk all day? Take a moment for a few neck rolls between answering emails. Have a lot of pent-up energy? Try walking a little faster or scrubbing your dishes a bit more vigorously.

Much of our modern life is filled with endless todo lists and tasks. We’ve put a huge emphasis on the destination and have forgotten to enjoy the process. When I get overwhelmed, I like to remember I am a human being, not a human doing. There is power in taking even a few moments each day for yourself. When we take a moment to soak in our surroundings, it elevates the good and gives us perspective against the bad.

Express Yourself As people, much of our struggle comes from unexpressed emotions and stress. As much as we wish we could cover it up with social media or television, it’s much more effective to seek outlets that really let us release the negative. For me, it’s hot yoga, creativity, kickboxing, or a quick walk. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Find what makes you feel good and keep doing it!

Belly Dancing

I try to dedicate time each week to belly dance. Belly dancing allows me to reconnect with my body, center my mind, and work up a sweat! The belly dancing instructors I’ve had the privilege to learn from over the years have taught me to love my body no matter what industry standards for beauty are. I practice belly dancing at Movement Arts Collective in Red Bank. They are a body-positive belly dance studio where I always feel welcomed and loved.

Building Models Building LEGO sets allows me to disconnect from my day. Watching the set take shape is exciting. Instead of ruminating over work projects, I give my full attention to the LEGO set to ensure I don’t miss a step. I come away from each new build with a clear mind and a sense of accomplishment. Someone interested in building a LEGO set should start with a small set (500 pieces or less). Starting too big could increase stress by contributing to the feeling that tasks are left unfinished.

Creating Space I practice mindfulness daily by creating space. Often, we feel the need to respond quickly to emails or respond right away in conversation. There is an urgency in everyday life that only increases stress. Creating space allows me to pause between a stimulus and my response, leaving time to breathe and reflect before proceeding. I’ve noticed that the better I get at creating space, the better my responses and decisions have become. Someone interested in creating space could start by counting to 10 before giving a response in any situation.

Schedule Time to Move I’m a competitive cyclist outside of my career in communications, but I schedule workouts like I would any meeting. Riding my bike outside brings me joy and gives me time to reflect, so I try to make that happen. It’s not always perfect, but at minimum, I try to get up from my desk and walk around or stretch. Getting some type of movement in each day keeps me energized and focused, even if I feel worn out from stress.

Stay on Top of Sleep I’m a big proponent of sleep, so it’s the first thing I focus on when I’m stressed (because it’s the first thing interrupted under these conditions). I used to think being busy meant you didn’t sleep, but I realized how destructive that was on my body and mind. I can handle much more and make better decisions more quickly when I’m well-rested.

Share My Struggles If things get hard to manage, I speak up. Sharing what’s stressing me out with people I trust and who are willing to listen helps me organize my feelings and emotions in a productive way. This helps me avoid impulsive behaviors I tend to lean into when I’m stressed, such as careless spending, eating too much junk food that only makes me feel worse, or being negative toward people I care about.

Pass the Pineapple Few sensations are more pleasant than biting into a juicy piece of ripe pineapple. Vibrant tropical flavors overtake the palate, while an unparalleled sweetness delights the senses. Tasting notes aside, a serving of pineapple fruit packs a healthy dose of vitamins and antioxidants, coming in at 88% daily value of vitamin C and 109% daily value of manganese. While it’s certainly a treat when eaten by itself, pineapple shines in a variety of dishes ranging from sweet to savory. Here’s a look at how some Chattanooga locals enjoy the fruit in their favorite healthy pineapple recipes.

Mayan Kitchen’s Caribbean Salsa SERVES 10 Ingredients

• • • • • • • •

1 lb. pineapple, diced 1 lb. jicama, diced 2 Tbsp. purple onion, diced 2 Tbsp. red bell pepper, diced 2 Tbsp. cilantro, chopped ½ Tbsp. lime vinaigrette 2 Tbsp. olive oil cup lime juice, freshly squeezed • ½ tsp. cayenne pepper • 1 tsp. salt Directions

Combine all ingredients in a bowl, and cover for at least 15 minutes to allow flavors to blend. Once rested, this salsa can be used to dress Caribbean shrimp tacos, or it can be used as a dip served with banana chips.

Did you know? Pineapple is classified as a berry. The fruit is technically a mass of individual berries fused to a centralized stalk.

“The thing I like the most about this salsa is how the flavors blend together. You have the right amount of sweet, sour, and salt all in one bite. It’s a very refreshing and unique salsa, not to mention how healthy it is!” Jany Rocio Flores, Chef

Ingredients

Directions

• 4 oz. sashimi-grade tuna steak • 1 Tbsp. soy sauce or tamari • ½ tsp. sesame oil • ½ tsp. mirin or rice wine vinegar • 1 green onion, thinly sliced • ½ cup fresh pineapple, diced • ¼ cup cucumber, peeled and diced • ½ large avocado, sliced • 8-10 macadamia nuts, roughly crushed • 1 Tbsp. plain Greek yogurt (I use Fage 2%) • Sriracha, to taste • tsp. black and white sesame seeds • Crispy wontons or banana chips (optional)

Cut tuna into small quarter- to half-inch cubes and place in a bowl. In a separate dish, mix soy sauce, sesame oil, mirin, and green onions. Whisk sauce and pour over cubed tuna. Cover and place in refrigerator. Place a large 4-inch circular cookie cutter in the center of a plate. Start your stack by placing the diced pineapple within the circle on the dish. Top the pineapple with the cucumber. Then, top the cucumber with the avocado. Press down a little to create a stable start to your stack. Remove tuna from the refrigerator. Lightly stir the crushed macadamia nuts in with the fish. Now, top the stack with your ahi mixture and gently press. Delicately remove the ring from the dish. In a small bowl, combine the yogurt and sriracha. Top the stack with a dollop of the yogurt mixture and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Serve with wontons, banana chips, or enjoy as is.

Mind Your Meal How to Start Eating Mindfully

When was the last time you ate a meal without scrolling through your phone or answering a work email? It happens to the best of us – we lead busy lives, and unfortunately, mealtime often becomes a rushed, mindless affair. Even more unfortunately, this mindless eating could be having a negative impact on your health. That’s where mindful eating comes in. Here, we discuss what this practice is and how you can incorporate it into your daily routine.

What is mindful eating?

Chances are, you’re at least somewhat familiar with the concept of mindfulness – being fully present in the moment, free from distraction. Mindful eating takes mindfulness and applies it to the experience of eating; essentially, it’s being fully present during meals. This involves paying attention to your thoughts and feelings while eating, as well as physical cues such as hunger and fullness. Part of what makes mindful eating so appealing is how accessible it is. No matter your age, weight, dietary restrictions, or dietary preferences, you can practice mindful eating anytime, anywhere.

Why is mindful eating beneficial?

By paying closer attention to how you feel when eating, you can learn to distinguish between your body’s hunger and fullness cues – leading to increased satisfaction at the end of a meal. Eating mindfully can also help ease stress and anxiety, and the slower pace of the meal will do wonders for your digestive system. Not to mention, you’ll get greater pleasure from the foods you eat when you’re able to fully focus on your meal. Mindful eating can also promote healthier eating habits, as well as help heal unhealthy relationships with food. For example, the practice has been used to help prevent binge eating, which involves consuming an excessive amount of food in a short time frame. Observing how your body feels after you eat different foods – and different amounts of food – can teach you how to best care for your body and keep it in tiptop shape.

How do you practice mindful eating?

While it may take some time to feel like a mindful eating pro, there are a few simple steps that can get you started in the right direction.

• Respond to your body’s hunger signals. You should ideally be starting your meals with an appetite, but not to the point of ravenous hunger – otherwise, it’ll be more difficult to enjoy your food. • Remove distractions before starting a meal. This means turning off the television, putting aside your phone, or stepping away from your work computer, allowing you to focus on the task at hand. • Watch your portion sizes. For those who tend to eat with their eyes instead of their stomachs, try plating smaller portions at the beginning of the meal. Once you’ve finished everything on your plate, you can check in with your body’s cues to see if you’re still hungry. • Take smaller bites. Not only will small bites help prevent you from rushing through your meal, but it also makes it easier to taste and savor what you’re eating. • Chew thoroughly. Depending on who you ask, you should chew each bite of food between 20 and 40 times – or until it’s ground into a fine paste – before swallowing. • Engage all of your senses. Be intentional about noticing the color, aroma, and texture of your food as you’re eating. You might make a mental note of qualities you do and don’t enjoy for future reference. • Express gratitude for your food. At some point during your meal, take some time to reflect on where the food came from and how it was prepared – then feel appreciative of the opportunity to be eating a delicious meal.

Keep in mind that realistically, you won’t be able to practice mindful eating 24/7. A deadline will come up, a toddler will demand your attention, or a dinner out with friends will require you to participate in the conversation – not spend five minutes contemplating your grilled asparagus. Try to incorporate as many of these mindful eating exercises as you can, and if and when life gets in the way, show yourself some compassion. We’re all doing the best we can!

Partner Leg Throws Lie flat on your back with your legs fully extended out in front of you. Your partner will stand with their feet straddling your head. Take your hands and grip the back of your partner’s ankles. When you are ready, lift your legs up toward your partner, keeping them straight. Your partner will grab your legs at your feet or shins and explosively push them back down to the floor. Contract your abs to prevent your feet from touching the floor and then immediately lift your legs up toward your partner to prepare for the next rep. Continue this movement for 45 seconds and then switch.

Wall-Sits and Tricep Dips Assume a squat position against a wall. Your partner will place their hands on your knees and do a tricep dip, lowering themselves until their arms form a 90-degree angle before extending back up to the initial position. Hold the squat for 45 seconds while your partner continues doing tricep dips and then switch positions.

Push-Up Plank Ladder For this exercise, both you and your partner will begin on all fours with arms extended. Complete a push-up, lowering to your knees if needed, and make sure your arms are

at a 90-degree angle at the bottom of the push-up. While you are doing a push-up, your partner will hold a plank. Once you have returned to the starting position, you will hold a plank while your partner does a push-up. Repeat this process, adding one push-up each time until 45 seconds have passed.
