March is a fun month with lots to do here in the North Carolina Triangle. The first day of Spring is March 19th this year, bringing warmer weather and outdoor adventures with your family! Check out Durham Creek Week events to get out and help clean up local streams (p. 7). For more outdoor Spring activities, visit www.chillkids.com to find fun events, hiking paths, and family outing ideas. Mark your calendar now for the North Carolina Science Festival, with events taking place from April 1st through 30th in locations throughout the state. Find upcoming STEM events statewide throughout the month of April at www.ncsciencefestival.org. Celebrate Women's History Month and learn with Morehead Planetarium & Science Center about Mary G. Ross, the first female Native American engineer (p. 12). Meet Adeena Lioness and her friends (p. 6), and schedule a tour at the Animal Park at the Conservators Center to see them and hear their "oofing" to greet visitors. Remember the last time you had a cold or the flu?
It was pretty miserable. You sneezed, coughed and had no energy. But there’s an easy way to avoid all that: Just join the SCRUB SQUAD. HOW TO JOIN: You join automatically, every time you wash your hands!
Using hand sanitizer shouldn’t be a _________________ for washing your hands with soap and _________. While sanitizer does kill _________, it doesn’t do a very good job of getting rid of __________ dirt. Think of hand sanitizer as just a little “touch-up” ____________ hand washings with good ol’ soap and water.
Rub your hands together under warm running water. Make sure to get wet up to your wrists. Use a generous amount of soap. Liquid soap, powdered soap or bar soap are all great. SCRUB: Get the palms, back of your hands, wrists, under your nails and between your fingers for at least 20 seconds. Rinse your hands to get rid of the soap (and dirt and germs). Air dry your hands or use a clean towel, either cloth or paper.

Meet Adeena Lioness & Friends
at the Animal Park at the Conservators Center
Adeena Lioness was born at the Animal Park at the Conservators Center, along with her sister, Willow, and brothers Ra and the late Thomas. Adeena Lioness still lives with her sister Willow in a shared habitat, along with Hansen Lion. These sisters are hardly ever apart from each other and can usually be found lounging on their platform and sunning their bellies during one of their many naps.

Adeena and Willow have a sisterly bond that is very much like their human visitors. They pick on each other, especially when it comes to getting attention. Other times though they are inseparable and can be found laying on their highest platform together, napping and sunning their bellies. They sometimes even allow Hansen to join in the nap time. All of the animals at the Animal Park enjoy their scent enrichment provided by keepers and adopters, but Adeena is particularly fond of cardboard covered in peppermint scent. She will roll around on the enrichment toys and enjoy the minty smell. Adeena enjoys playing soccer, napping, and basking in the sun. Intelligent and mischievous, Adeena also is a very affectionate lioness, especially with those who spend time with her, like her adopters! Women's History Month
Mary G. Ross, the First Female Native American Engineer Mary Golda Ross was the first Native American female engineer.
Who comes to mind when you think of a female engineer? Perhaps Katherine Johnson, the mathematician whose work was vital to the first American manned spaceflight.
After being hired by Lockheed Martin in 1942, she helped lay the groundwork for NASA's modern interplanetary space travel and orbiting satellites.
Or maybe you thought of Ava Lovelace: the first programmer and computer engineer. It’s also possible you couldn’t think of any female engineers. However, history is full of the untold stories of amazing women in STEM. One such story is that of Mary G. Ross: the first female Native American engineer. Do you recognize her name? That may be because she was recently featured on the 2019 one dollar coin! As we celebrate Women’s History Month this March, her story is one that certainly deserves to be told. Like many other women at the time, Ross’ life was changed when World War II began. As men went overseas, women often filled their jobs at home becoming mechanics, factory workers, nurses, etc. In factories, women built the planes, vehicles, and weapons that were vital to the United States’ success in the war. Unlike other women, Mary G. Ross worked at aerospace and defense company Lockheed Martin designing P-38 fighter planes. This position was the first stepping stone in securing her place in history as the first female Native American engineer. Ross didn’t gain national attention, though, without breaking a few barriers first. In a time period where few women worked in STEM professions, Ross was a pioneer. She had a natural gift for math, earning her degree early at age 20. During these years, she discovered her passion for astronomy and engineering. Her journey was not an easy one, however. She frequently faced prejudice for being a woman in an overwhelmingly male field. In Ross’s words, “I was the only female in my class. I sat on one side of the room and the guys on the other side of the room. I guess they didn’t want to associate with me. But I could hold my own with them and sometimes did better.” After college, she pursed education as a schoolteacher in Oklahoma. Once the war began, Ross moved to California with the hope of getting a factory job. It was here where she landed her position at Lockheed, becoming one step closer to her dream.
Working at Lockheed laid the foundation for the rest of Ross’s career. Finally able to enter a formal engineering program, she earned a certificate in engineering and design from UCLA. After the war, Ross received a call from Lockheed once again, this time asking her to work on one of their top-secret projects in collaboration with NASA. She worked on these projects until retiring in the 1970s, and they remain classified to this day. Ross describes her work there as “taking the theoretical and making it real”, so we can only imagine the innovations she helped bring to life. Ross didn’t let retirement slow her down. She became an advocate for both women and the Native American community, inspiring future generations through her recruiting and lectures. A supporter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), Ross became an outspoken advocate of Native American representation in STEM and the celebration of Native American traditions. This month, take a minute to reflect on women pioneers like Mary G. Ross, whose story continues to inspire positive change for women around the world.
