An 8-year-old girl was thrown off her bike after she hit a wire strung across a trail leading to a wooded area of Garrison Crossing on Monday. A witness told police an unknown man wearing black pants and a black-hooded jacket has been seen acting suspiciously in the area. “Police believe the person that strung the wire had the intention to harm someone,” Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said. The wire struck the little girl at chest level causing her to fall off her bike at about 2:30 p.m. “Luckily, the girl was not seriously injured, but we are asking people who use that trail to be aware and reports any similar circumstances or see anyone suspicious in the area,” Hollingsworth said. Wind storm brings uninvited guest to dinner Robert Freeman The Progress Bonnie Fox was preparing a Christmas Day dinner for 19 guests when the party was crashed — by a 100-year-old Douglas Fir that suddenly keeled over and narrowly missed her house in Garrison Crossing. But a neighbour’s roof and deck were damaged as the huge tree came crashing down over four properties in the neighbourhood at about 1:35 p.m. “It’s a godsend that it didn’t go
through anybody’s house,” Fox said. “It was a miracle that nobody was hurt.” Christmas Dinner, however, was cancelled. “We slept in a hotel Christmas night,” Fox said, because two more huge trees remained in the backyard, and city workers were concerned for Fox’s safety as a windstorm had ripped through the Chilliwack area Christmas Day, knocking out electricity to thousands of homes and flipping two planes at Chilliwack airport. But it seems something called
“laminated root rot” may have had more to do with the falling tree than an unusually fierce gust of wind. Bonnie’s husband Darrell said a Canada Lands Company arborist had “tagged” the three trees for preservation, but as they were being removed another arborist told Fox they had all suffered from “laminated root rot.” A Canada Lands official explained last week that no sign of the disease is visible by outward appearances, and it is transmitted by root contact only, making
it unlikely it is present in the remaining trees that are a signature of the company’s Garrison Crossing housing development. “This happens to be a disease that’s invisible even to the expert observer,” said Randy Fasan, chief planner at Canada Lands. The arborist who tagged Fox’s trees for preservation revisited the site after Christmas Day, and reported there is “little concern” for infection in other trees. “The potential for root-to-root contact between these trees and adjacent trees is extreme-
ly remote, therefore the spread of this disease is also remote,” arborist Norman Hol said in the report. Fox said he might have designed his house differently, if he could have removed the trees, and saved himself and his neighbours a lot of grief. “We’re a little disappointed because we had our house built around those trees — and now those trees are gone,” he said. rfreeman@theprogress.com twitter.com/paperboy2

a huge audience,” said McAulay. “We’re hoping to try and leverage that through Twitter and YouTube.” Wednesday’s episode is the second time Naked has been featured on Dragons’ Den. Primus went on the show in 2009, before the product had even gone into production. He knew he had a great design and vision, and hoped the dragons would concur. However, while they were appreciative of the idea, they felt Primus’ overall plan was lacking. Furthermore, the only product he had were a few underwear samples – which he stripped down himself to show – sewn by a friend’s grandmother.
“It was still very much in the prototype stage,” said McAulay. Primus walked away with nothing, but didn’t give up. The business graduate bought the Naked trademark with his credit cards. In 2010, he teamed up with McAulay, a chartered accountant, who set up a capital structure for the company, a business plan, and brought in high-profile investors. A short time later, before Naked went into production, Holt Renfrew was sold on its pitch. “It is seriously a fairy tale story,” said McAulay. “It’s an entrepreneur story, a true entrepreneur story.” Their recent success hasn’t gone unnoticed. Primus and
McAulay were invited back to Dragons’ Den for a second chance episode. “There are a lot of underwear lines that get pitched on the show, but not one with the success that we have had,” said McAulay. But those dragons can be intimidating. Prior to filming, McAulay and Primus were led into a dark room with a backdrop that separated them from the dragons. “That’s when the nerves started going,” said McAulay. “But one minute in, it was on. You were in the hot seat and they were firing questions at you right away. We negotiated for an hour, going back and forth, trying
to find something that would work.” McAulay was mum about the outcome of the show, as per contractual agreement with CBC. “It was a good experience; we left happy for sure,” he said. “Regardless of whether we got a deal or not, it’s very good exposure for us. “We have one of the finest made products in Canada.” McAulay and Primus will be answering questions about the business and the challenges of growing a business on Twitter from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. via the company’s Twitter handle @NakedUnder wear. A firefighter was injured fighting a blaze in a vacant house on Watson Road last Wednesday morning. Assistant Fire Chief Jim MacDonald said the fire had burned through a number of holes in the floor of the house, when the firefighter made a “misstep” and plunged through one of them. Luckily, the firefighter fell into a crawl space, suffering a bad sprain, rather than a more serious injury after a longer fall into “a less benign” situation, MacDonald said. “It could have gone a different way completely,” he said. Homeowners know their way around a house, MacDonald added, but firefighters “are going into places where we have no idea — often with poor visibility — “ and they must be constantly be aware of the risks. The injured firefighter was treated and released from Chilliwack General Hospital. MacDonald also urged owners of vacant homes to board up properties securely, as they are often used as shelters by transients who often light fires inside to keep warm. New hope for FVRD seen in new Abby mayor Robert Freeman The Progress Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz, the new chair of the Fraser Valley Regional District, hopes new elected leadership in Abbotsford will help hold the region together. This is despite the new Abbotsford council’s vote last month to continue looking into leaving the FVRD. However, Bruce Banman, the new Abbotsford mayor, and city councillors Patricia Ross and Henry Braun voted against asking the province for permission to leave the FVRD and set up its own regional government. Gaetz said in an email to The Progress that Banman “has indicated to me that he wished to build relationships with neighbouring communities and this (vote) clearly sends a message of that intent.” Gaetz also said it’s her understanding that “there is no legislated pathway for any municipality to form their own regional district” and that such a move “would be rather counter-intuitive, as the purpose of regional districts is to bring communities together to work on common challenges
such as airshed protection, transportation and regional growth strategies, to name a few.” “Regional districts have a broad and diverse membership and it’s difficult to make everyone happy on every issue, but Abbotsford’s new mayor is showing leadership and I am looking forward to working with him and with his council,” she said. But Banman also said, despite his personal objections, that he will begin discussions with the provincial government about leaving the FVRD. “The mayor has to follow the wishes of council,” he said. Banman does not believe the B.C. government will allow the move, and he said that a local MLA has advised him to stay with the FVRD, although he would not name the MLA. City staff reports indicate that leaving the FVRD will save taxpayers about $750,000, but Coun. Ross does not believe the number is accurate.

Ecstasy can kill you. Can that message be driven home any more clearly? In the past five weeks, the popular man-made drug has taken two lives in Abbotsford, and is responsible for another that hangs in the balance. On Nov. 27, Tyler Miller, 20, took ecstasy. He was a gifted Abbotsford musician and student, with great career plans. It’s all over. He was dead in eight hours. On Dec. 19, 17-year-old Cheryl McCormack of Abbotsford ingested ecstasy with some friends – ostensibly as a weight loss aid. She became unresponsive, and three days later, she died. She was a bright, fun and athletic teen. On New Year’s Eve, a 24-year-old Abbotsford woman engaged in “recreational” use of ecstasy with three friends. By 6 a.m. she was in critical condition in hospital, where she remains today. The grief and suffering of the family and friends of these victims is excruciating. In that context, it is such cruel irony, considering ecstasy is known for inducing euphoria and a sense of well-being. It’s chemical Russian roulette. You can feel good and survive – perhaps many times. Or, you can end up dead, or on life support. It doesn’t take prolonged use or abuse of ecstasy to court disaster. Ecstasy, or MDMA, is notorious for being laced with other drugs, including ketamine, methamphetamine and cocaine. Depending on the circumstances, the physiology of the user and other factors, the mix can be lethal. It seems an insane risk, yet ecstasy is popular among a segment of young people, who have so much to lose. Please – parents, teachers, police – speak with your children, your students, your young contacts. Teens, counsel your peers who may be tempted to use ecstasy or are already using it. Give them the cold facts. Implore them to think, to make good decisions. The loss of Tyler and Cheryl must take on deep future meaning – and that is to save the lives of others.

Weather that seems to defy predictions If the weather seems decidedly odd, we’re not alone. Canadians are enjoying balmy temperatures on the east coast, double digit temperatures in Calgary, and no snow in Saskatchewan. Go figure that one. Up until Christmas day in Chilliwack, it was the driest December since 1914. Even with the wind and rainstorm that day and some mild, wet weather leading up to New Year’s, December rainfall totals were still 63.86 per cent below normal. But the whole of 2011 was sure out of sorts. According to Roger Pannett, volunteer weather observer for Environment Canada in Chilliwack, “With mean temperatures 0.27 degrees C below normal, 2011 was the coolest year since 1996. This was primarily due to the coldest February since 1994, the coolest April and May since 1955 and the coolest April

to July period since 1964.” Temperature extremes came in odd months too. The daily record breaking minimum temperature was -10.0 degrees C on February 25th while the maximum temperature of 31.5 degrees C which occur red on September 11th. This is the time of year when Environment Canada puts out its top ten weather stories and topping the list for 2011was the prairie flood that would never end. The spring flood became the
summer flood with the highest water levels and water flows in modern history across parts of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. But if it was wet at the beginning of the growing season, conditions came together for some farmers enjoyed bumper crops at the end of the season from all that moisture. And if it was monumentally wet on the prairies, it was monumentally windy and dry in Slave Lake where the mother of all fires destroyed one-third of the homes and business putting the Slave Lake fire in the national #2 spot. With 100 km/h winds and 1000 degree C heat, some 400 structures were reduced to twisted steel and blackened rubble. The east wasn’t out of the lineup either, landing itself in 5th place. In August a wild week of wind and air currents in Ontario whipped up tornadoes starting
with the killer F3 tornado that hit Goderich on August 21st, killing one person and injuring 40 others. An F3 twister has winds from 250 km/h to 320 km/h. Before that nightmare ended, three more tornadoes touched down in the province. On the east coast, 19 tropical storms formed in the Atlantic basin, well above the long-term average of 11 storms and putting the region in 6th place. Six storms became hurricanes with three logging in as major at a Category 3 or higher, those being Irene, Katia and Ophelia. That storm season was a continuation of above-normal activity that began in 1995. In the north and in 8th place, more Arctic sea ice melted. According to Environment Canada and the National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado, sea ice covering the Arctic Ocean

It surprised many scientists because of the absence of the usual warm weather and oceanic conditions that had contributed to the super melt in 2007. Even in December it was still unusually low. In 10th place are the furious winds that stormed across southern Alberta. During the last week in November, some of the most powerful winds ever recorded roared across the foothills, A home weather station in Pincher Creek recorded winds at 204 km/h. Predictions for this winter? The Weather Network is calling for southern B.C. to have near normal temperatures but wetter than usual.

Good Samaritans tend to a female cyclist who was found at the intersection of Spadina Avenue and Yale Road in Chilliwack last Tuesday afternoon. Presented by Mt. Cheam Lions Club As we head into a New Year, it is customary for organizations to reÀect back on the past year, as well as trying to catch a glimpse of what lies ahead in the new year. The Mount Cheam Lions are no exception. 2011 was a busy year as usual. Among the projects we worked on were (in no particular order) the Terry Fox Run, Canada Day Celebrations, Gord Hutton Walk’n’Knock, Train & Hobby Show, Christmas Pub Crawl, Turkey Draw among others. We also cooked and barbecued for various fundraisers, both with our club and other organizations. The nicest part is the fact that money raised in these projects goes 100% back into our community. Along with our ongoing projects, we created some new ones. The Mount Cheam Lions Seniors Club was created as a result of the withdrawal of the government funded Time-Out programme. We had hoped to ¿ll a gap for the seniors, but we had no idea how successful this would be. We began with one day a week (Tuesdays) but later added Thursdays as well. Not only did the Mount Cheam Lions put in many hours, but we were soon joined by volunteers from other clubs, students, and others. The students of the Culinary Programme of the University of the Fraser Valley did the cooking for the Thursday session, while our own Mount Cheam Lions prepared Tuesday’s spread. Throughout the year we were aided in our quests by other clubs, various businesses, local newspapers and media. Last, but not least, if you like to knit we can use your help in knitting hats, scarfs, etc for needy young people. For more info call Trudy at 604-392-6777. Teens boost businesses with social media Katie Bartel The Progress Social media has become a business for a trio of teenagers. Six months ago, Max Gardner, Brendan Reeve, and Louis Retief started Plugged_ In, a social media management company designed to boost the online profiles of small businesses. “Social media is such an important part of having a business today,” said Gardner. “You win if you know how to do it, and lose if you don’t. “We want to help small businesses in Chilliwack be as successful as possible with social media.” And they would know. Gardner, Reeve, and Retief are all in Grade 11 at Sardis secondary; they’ve grown up with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, email and websites – it’s a main component of their lives. “If you grow up on a farm, you’re going to be experienced at being a dairy farmer, and if you grow up living, breathing social media, you’re gong to be good at social
media,” said Gardner. When the teens were in middle school together, they used to dream up business ideas and talk about how cool it would be to start one of their own. Then last summer, when Gardner was bored and noodling around on Craigslist, he got inspired. Social media could be their business, he told his buddies. “Social media is where everybody is,” said Gardner. “You can get consumers right there on the couch without having to spend a whole whack of money.” But you need the savvy and the time to do so. That’s where Plugged_In comes in. “Business owners are so busy and don’t have the time to get on Twitter and Facebook, so we thought, why not bring it to them,” said Gardner. “If you want to run a successful social media campaign for your business, you have to commit at least one hour a day to build a network. You have to follow people, like their pages, add and invite people to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, and on top of that, you have to interact with

people – it’s a good 40 hours a month at least.” “If small business owners are able to allocate that time elsewhere into their business, they’re going to be better off,” added Retief. These aren’t just a group of kids looking for a hobby, or to just make money. They’re serious about the business venture. Every lunch hour, they can be found in the school’s computer lab completing school assignments to ensure they have evenings free for Plugged_In. They’ve given up social activities and lounge-around days to work on the business. They stay up until the wee hours of the morning Skyping, talking on the phone, text messaging – all for the business. “Our friends don’t really see us anymore,” said Retief. “It’s not easy, but you do what you have to do to be successful.” “We’re not just 16-year-old kids, we’re business owners,” said Gardner. They have spent extensive hours researching how social media can improve businesses, and have picked apart different companies, looking at what has worked and

what hasn’t with regards to social media. They’ve looked at the benefits of developing Facebook pages and websites, and have even figured out the number of daily tweets required to capture an audience. They also regularly attend business and networking conferences, local and provincial. During the recent municipal and school elections, their clients included city counselor Sue Attrill and school trustee candidate Dan Coulter, a relative unknown before the election, who was just 384 votes shy of winning a seat. They’ve also worked with a couple of Chilliwack businesses helping them boost their profiles online, and are working on a “major” social media business proposal they believe will increase foot traffic for businesses in the downtown. “We’re just filling a niche,” said Reeve. Chilliwack meets Dollywood Katie Bartel The Progress A Chilliwack metal sculptor has caught the eye of one of the most prolific belles south of the border. Nine months ago Kevin Stone was approached by Dollywood, a Tennessee theme park owned by
country music star Dolly Parton, requesting he build them a metal sculpture comparable to Parton’s voluptuous personality. The result: a massive, $250,000 bald eagle with a wing span of 48-feet from tip to tip, and a head that hovers more than two stories high. “This is the largest eagle in the
world,” boasted Stone, owner of Metal Animation Studio Inc. It’s also the third in a series of eagles Stone has completed. Unlike the first two, which were all stainless steel, this bird has a combination of both stainless and rusted steels – as requested by Dollywood. Continued: METAL/ p13

Red Nose numbers solid again this year The Progress Operation Red Nose saw solid support in 2011, with its last ride heading out on New Year’s Eve. The local campaign provided 702 rides for motorists who didn’t feel fit to drive over the holidays from the communities of Chilliwack, Yarrow, Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs. The 2011 total of 702 was down slightly from
the all-time high of 738 rides in 2010. This year Red Nose volunteers travelled 17,000 kilometres over nine nights to get drivers home safely. Donations totaled $12,220.92 for the host charity, Chilliwack Restorative Justice, a youth focused non-profit organization. The annual Operation Red Nose campaign continues to attract strong
backing from community members. “We are extremely appreciative of the support provided by our many volunteers and sponsors. The Old Yale Brewing Company on Vedder Road had shut down a couple of years ago, but the brewery is busy making all-natural beer again since being purchased by a group of passionate beer-lovers. They retained the same brewmaster, Larry Caza, who steered production of the hand-crafted beer when it was
winning industry awards for its full-flavoured Sergeant’s IPA and Sasquatch Stout, among others. “The recipes are the same and the first few batches have come out excellent,” according to an announcement from the new owners. “Our new group is excited about getting our superb beer to more people.” They have started shipping a large bottle format to a few liquor stores in the Chilliwack and Abbotsford areas and a few outlets have Old Yale beer on tap again.
Metal sculpture a hit The theme park is a throwback, featuring a steam engine train and a wooden roller coaster, bluegrass music, blacksmithing exhibitions and other such turn-of-thecentury crafts. my other two eagles.” Over the next two weeks, Stone will be finishing the bird’s second wing. The completed bird will weigh an estimated 1,500 pounds, and is engineered to withstand 170 km winds. The eagle will be transported on a semi truck next month to Tennessee, where it will be the mascot of Dollywood’s newest roller coaster, Wild Eagle, which opens in March. Stone will be flying out to help with installation, and “hopefully meet Dolly,” he said.

CLAXTON Louis Franklin
L o u i s Franklin Claxton passed away on January 2, 2012 at the age of 84 at the Chilliwack CLAXTON Hospital. Lou was born on November 17, 1927 in Smith’s Falls, ON and is survived by his dear brother Neebour, nephews Lyle & Calvin Tingey and Daryl Claxton, and nieces Denis Claxton, Valorie Harmon & Sharon Gauthier. He also leaves to mourn his passing, step grandsons Steven & Douglas Horsfield. In his time, Lou was a devoted son, protective brother, and a wonderful husband, uncle and grandfather. He was very proud of having served his country in WWII but under the uniform beat the heart of a poet. He wrote verses all his life and in those line the deep love he bore for e his mother, Hetty, rang out like a churchbell on a clear quiet morning. Though Lou never had any children of his own, he and his wife, Violet, raised her son Ray Horsfield who, sadly predeceased Lou. Violet passed away in 1996 leaving a vast emptiness in Lou’s life. It was then that he found spiritual comfort in the Community of Christ Church. Over the years, Lou forged many stalwart friendships, but one in particular, Tom Beer, warrents mention. Whether it was trimming Lou’s much-loved plum tree or taking him to doctors appointments, Tom was always there, remaining Lou’s closest friend and spiritual advisor until the very end. Lou was an enigma. He loved to tease and joke, but in times of great stress, he was the voice of reason. He could be gruff and ornery, but his touch as he nudged his cat outdoors for a walk about was a gentle as a mothers. Lou was a member of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Union Local #170, establishing many lifelong associations, including his good friend Don Rutledge. At Lou’s express instructions, no formal funeral service is to be held. He can’t however, forestall the tears that have fallen, nor stop the sharing of fond remembrances of all who knew and loved him.

GOEDHART Anna Jacoba
Anna Goedhart passed away peacefully at Cascade Lodge on December 28th, 2011 at the age of 90 years. She was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on May 3, 1921. Anna and her husband Antonie came to Canada from Holland around 30 years ago, first moving to Southern Alberta, and then settling on a property just west of Chilliwack. They lived at this location for many years and raised Arabian Horses, the first of which they brought with them from Europe. Anna was an independent, yet gracious woman, who loved animals and often took in stray cats. She enjoyed music and was particularly fond of Bach. She was pre-deceased by her husband Antonie on August 2, 2001. Graveside Services will be held from the Carman United Church Cemetery at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 13, 2012. A reception will follow from the Carman United Church located at 7258 Vedder Rd Chilliwack.

Denise Dorothy Dalane Devnich Graham was born May 26, 1967 in Moscow, ID GRAHAM and passed to her rest December 28, 2011 in Port Angeles, WA. Denise was employed by the Seventh-day Adventist Church as an elementary teacher and vice-principal in Chilliwack and Fraser Valley Adventist Academy (Aldergrove) until 2008. She completed a MBA degree in 2009 and moved to Sequim, WA to establish an academic coaching and educational support service to families of the community. Denise is predeceased by her father, Pastor Raymond Devnich (1973); step-sister, Ruth Blabey Sutton (1981) and step-father, Stanley A. Blabey of Rosedale in 2006. Andy was born in Windsor, NS. At the age of 12 he moved to Bridgewater, NS with his family. Following school and business college, Andy worked for Roy O’Brien Wholesales Ltd. in Halifax. In 1960 Andy moved to Chilliwack, BC to join his parents and sister. Andy worked in purchasing for Van Waters & Rogers and in 1964 went to Fisher Scientific as Purchasing Supervisor and later on Inside Sales Supervisor. He worked on his CMA Accounting Program from 1969 to 1974 and after receiving his CMA joined an equipment company as Accounting Manager. In 1976 Andy went into the client accounting business and in 1978 began teaching accounting at BC Vocational School. In the mid eighties Andy transferred to Douglas College as

an Accounting Faculty member there. Andy retired from Douglas College in 2001 and he and his wife moved from Coquitlam to Chilliwack to be near family and he did some part-time work for his son in law’s business. He finally retired for good in December 2006. In addition to fishing and camping, Andy took up painting as a hobby late in life doing landscapes of Nova Scotia, Ontario, Alberta and BC. Andy was predeceased by his parents Alex and Doris Morrison, and his first wife Joeyan (MacLeod) Morrison. He is survived by his current wife Katherine (McFarlane) Morrison; his daughters Julie Vanthournout (Aaron), Christina van den Brink (Bruce); his grandchildren, Melody, Jasmine, Jarrod and Grace; his step son and daughter Dylan Hagerman (Emily) and Stephanie Schlosser (Shane) and grandson Logan. He is also survived by his brother David (Arlene) Centreville, NS and his sister Beryl (Don) Mirror, AB as well as several nieces and nephews. Kathleen Barbara Anne Rancier, aka Kay, passed away peacefully at Cascade Lodge, RANCIER Chilliwack BC on Friday, January 6, 2012. She is survived by her two sons, Robin and Jay and her daughter, Kym. She is also survived by her three sisters, Rosemary, Ruth and Lynn and her four grandchildren, Myrika, Jessie, Laurie and Cooper. Kay was a real people person. She loved animals and garage sales. She will be missed by all. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Tea Room at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 45901Victorial Ave. Chilliwack. Special thanks to the staff at the Cascade Lodge for their care and compassion and to her granddaughter, Laurie, who helped make her last night a pleasant and peaceful one. STOREN William Michael Aug. 22, 1934 - Jan. 7, 2012 It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my husband and soul mate Bill Storen on STOREN Jan. 7/12 in Abbotsford ICU at age 77. He succumbed as a result of acute lung injury, due to complications from chemotherapy, after colon surgery August 29/11. Bill was born, raised, schooled and held early jobs in Brandon, Mb. In 1959 he met Clara Sutcliffe and they married August 11/62. Bill began working for the Federal Gov’t. - DIA, and transfers took them from Brandon, Dauphin, The Pas, Island Lake to Prince Rupert and Prince George where Bill switched to Coast Guard so we could return to Prince Rupert. In 1979 Bill opened Wilara Stationers in Prince Rupert and ran it successfully until 1986 when he sold out and, at age 52, we bought a motorhome and small truck - getting “Lost in America” for 2 1/2 years. We then settled in Nanaimo - Bill built me a lovely bungalow but we decided we were on the wrong side of the strait so in July 1991 we moved to our present location here in Chilliwack. During Bill’s life he belonged to many clubs and organizations, but none gave him more pleasure or satisfaction than his “Bikes for Kids” program - collecting used bikes around the valley, repairing as need be and distributing them through the Salvation Army at Christmas. The sheer joy of a child going home with a bike made it all very special. He also supplied Chance School with as many bikes and parts as possible for use in their Bike Dept. He worked elections at every level but being Chief Election Officer for the City of Chilliwack was always his favourite. The staff was wonderful to work with and the election in November 2011 even more so - as by this time the chemo was playing havoc in Bill’s body. Karla Graham, the City Clerk, was there for Bill every step of the way - for which Bill was ever so thankful. Our thanks go out to Dr. Causton and his staff, plus the staff at Chilliwack and Abbotsford hospitals. Since Bill is the last of his generation and our families are scattered across Canada and USA, Bill requested there should be no service. Clara thanks all of you for your prayers, concerns and support during this most difficult time. A drop in reception will be held at Evergreen Hall, Slesse

TURNER Kenneth L.
Kenneth passed away at Chilliwack General Hospital on December 22, 2011. He was born in Regina, Sask. on April 10, 1920. He was a proud veteran and a member of the Chilliwack Region no. 4. Ken is survived by his loving wife, Grace; sons, Terren, Dan, Dennis (Beth); stepdaughters Geri, Elaine, Carol, Nancy and extended family. Ken’s family wishes to thank the Drs. & staff for the excellent care given to him while he was in the hospital. We will all miss him.
VANLAAR Teunis (Teus)
Teunis VanLaar passed away peacefully at his home near Yarrow to be with his Saviour VANLAAR on January 5, 2012, aged ninety-three. He was born on a small farm near Schoonrewoerd, Holland in May of 1918. At age fifteen he began to work as an apprentice stonemason in the city of Utrecht. In 1946 he married his local sweetheart, Florida DeLeeuw, after courting her through the tense war years. With two young sons they immigrated to Canada in 1950, a land of freedom and opportunity. After working on various farms in Alberta they moved to the Fraser Valley and eventually bought their own dairy farm in Sumas Prairie, a dream come true. There he farmed with his sons until he retired. We are thankful for the love and dedication he showed to his family, leading us in service to God. He leaves behind his wife of sixty five years of marriage, Florida, his children: Jake (Liz), John (Rita), Wilf (Yvonne), Arnold (Marian), and Nell (Dick), 28 grandchildren and 35 greatgrandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 January 10th in the Canadian Reformed Church in Yarrow. “Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life.” John 6:40
