Cummins, Clark make byelection stop Robert Freeman The Progress The big guns are rolling in to Chilliwack as B.C. political parties prepare for a byelection battle here in the ChilliwackHope riding. B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins checked out the political landscape in Chilliwack and Hope on Monday, and Premier Christy Clark is scheduled to meet privately with members of the Chilliwack/Fraser Rotary Club on Wednesday.
Cummins told The Progress he is “not surprised” to see the Premier in Chilliwack, probably doing just what he is — testing the political waters for “critical local issues” that could make the difference between a byelection win or loss. “The BC Liberals are on a bit of a downward slope right now, and it wouldn’t look well on them not to do well in this byelection,” Cummins said. “I think they’ll put considerable resources into it to try and get a victory out of it.”

BC Liberals may also fall back on fear tactics like the threat of splitting the conservative vote to hold onto the riding, but Cummins dismissed such a political ploy. He said a BC Conservative candidate here can win the byelection without touching the BC Liberals’ voter base by drawing support from the 48 per cent who didn’t vote in the last provincial election. “We’re drawing support from those folks who stayed home because they didn’t like the

choices that were out there,” he said. “Now they’re coming to us.” No splitting of the conservative vote needed. In fact, Cummins said that without the BC Conservatives in the 2013 province-wide election, a majority NDP government would be a slam-dunk. Anyone who has ever tried to get across the Vedder River bridge in Chilliwack on a hot summer day knows it can get snarled with traffic. A request for expressions of interest from City of Chilliwack is seeking preliminary engineering designs on replacing the bridge to improve traffic flow. “We know the traffic patterns in that area are bad in the summertime,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “We don’t need to do a traffic study to know the bridge is inadequate and has to be upgraded.” In fact, the Vedder bridge and what should be done with it is one of the “top” subjects that city officials hear from residents about, she said. “For people from Yarrow, Cultus Lake and Chilliwack River Valley, it’s a huge issue for them,” Gaetz said. The RFEI process will show city officials who has the expertise to do the work, along with their respective visions, whether it’s replacing the bridge with a new structure, or making interim improvements in a phasedin approach. The question of how pedestrians and cyclists will cross the river will also be considered, and the “dream” would be to keep the old bridge for that purpose, she said. “We’ll have to see. The real challenge will be finding the funding,” underlined the mayor. “We can’t do it on our own.” Bridge replacement has been the subject of three past studies, including one to get a preliminary cost estimate on replacing the bridge, but it is not in the city’s 10-year comprehensive financial plan. In absence of a new bridge, officials have used the more cost-effective method of employing traffic flagging

Penner denies involvement in logging approval Robert Freeman The Progress Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner’s role in a gravel mine approval and allowing logging in Spotted Owl habitat is being questioned by the Friends of the Chilliwack River Valley. But Penner dismissed the allegations Wednesday as the kind of political rhetoric expected before the upcoming byelection to fill his seat as he leaves provincial politics. “I expect to hear more of the
same as the byelection unfolds,” he said. Penner denied he had anything to do with the decision to allow logging in the wildlife habitat area (WHA) set aside to protect Spotted Owls. “I had nothing to do with the logging decision,” he said. “Ministers don’t issue logging permits.” By legislation, forestry officials make those decisions, he said, not ministers, to keep politics out of the process. Penner said he’d seen the CFV’s news release, but he did not com-
ment on the allegation that when he was environment minister he had halted an environmental assessment of a proposed gravel mine in Larsen’s Bench. CRV spokesman Glen Thompson said environment ministry officials had earlier stated the decision “was made by Barry Penner himself.” Thompson said he could produce a document to back up the allegation, but he also felt Penner had an obligation to meet with the CRV and disclose how these decisions were made.
“This was done on his watch,” Thompson said. “That’s something we want to ask him before he disappears.” Thompson said the CRV only learned of the logging approval at a public meeting held last fall by Tamihi Logging officials. “It appears most likely that Mr. Penner would be involved in the negotiations since he was the minister responsible, and the WHA is located in his riding,” Thompson said. “Three years is a long time to
negotiate what amounts to two or three weeks of work,” he added. “We wonder if there are more surprises coming.” Thompson was going to run for the NDP nomination in the riding, but later withdrew his name. However, federal NDP MP Peter Julian has been invited to a tour of the Spotted Owl habitat on Dec. 20, along with Western Canada Wilderness Committee officials who held a campout last year to protest logging in the area. rfreeman@theprogress.com

Stepping up for ‘a Christmas to remember’ Katie Bartel The Progress It was a ‘Christmas to Remember’ for 25 needy Chilliwack families Saturday afternoon. The greenhouse at Fantasy Farms on Gibson Road was transformed into a winter wonderland with snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, 15 decorated trees, hundreds of twinkling lights, a cosy fireplace, and a dinner table with all the Christmas fixings. For Gary Moran, owner of Fantasy Farms, it was about providing lasting memories for those who need it most. When Chilliwack Rona approached Moran last July about organizing a Christmas event, he didn’t hesitate to jump on board. He wanted to give a little extra to those in need just as
someone had for his family so many years earlier. Moran grew up in a single-income household, with three other siblings, after his father died. His mom worked hard, and they never went without. But most Christmases, the young Morans didn’t have the extras that all the other neighbourhood kids had. And then one Christmas two men showed up at their front door with bags of food and other such goodies. “All four of us children remember that Christmas as the Christmas where we had the extras that others had,” said Moran. After Fantasy Farms got on board, the event snowballed. Several businesses donated time, money, and other such necessities. Rona raised $5,800, Save-On-Foods, PriceSmart,
and Coopers Foods supplied the food at cost, Lilydale supplied all the meat, the Fraser River Fishing Lodge in Agassiz donated its kitchen and staff, and one Fantasy Farms customer, a chef by trade, donated his skills by way of cooking up the massive feast. As well, there were approximately 40 volunteers decorating the greenhouse, wrapping gifts, cooking food, serving food. “We had so many people wanting to volunteer, we actually had to turn down volunteers,” said Moran. Families were selected by the Ann Davis Transition Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well as private submissions. Each family was asked to provide a wish list for Santa. “It was so heartwarming to read what they were asking for,” said
Moran. “Mostly just the basics of what they needed: flour, cooking stuff, baking stuff. The kids asked for Lego and colouring books.” Every item that was asked for, was provided. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. 25 families, just shy of 100 people, were doted on. They were entertained, dined, given presents, and train rides around the outdoor Christmas village. “We all have memories of something that was special in our life, that we can reflect back on at different times,” said Moran. “This is something to remember.” For Fantasy Farms, this year’s Christmas to Remember is just the beginning. “We’ll definitely be doing it again,” said Moran. “It’s very rewarding. It’s nice to be able to do something like this.” kbartel@theprogress.com
Crime “hotspots” in Chilliwack and other Fraser Valley communities have been identified so residents and businesses can keep their eyes open and report suspicious activity to police. The public awareness campaign is the next phase of a policing model in which an analyst identifies crime “hotspots” in a community, so police patrols and other crime-fighting resources can be focused there with greatest effect. The success so far of the policing model, adopted last year by the Upper Fraser Valley Regional RCMP detachment, has prompted police officials to now bring the public into the picture with monthly “hotspot” bulletins. “The message is: ‘be vigilant,’” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said. “That message is going to be the same every month, unless there’s something significantly different in one of those (hotspot) areas.” The hotspots that saw more property crimes over the last 28 days are: In Chilliwack: Fairfield Island, north of the Menzies Street bridge on Hope River Road; Strathcona Road; Fairbanks Crescent and Emerald Drive. Convict, now deceased, was ‘person of interest’ Chilliwack father hopes for answers Vikki Hopes Black Press A Surrey man who died in prison while serving a sentence for a manslaughter conviction has been linked to the case of a missing Abbotsford woman.
Black Press has learned that Darryl Cole, 44, was a “person of interest” in the disappearance of Candace Shpeley, missing since March 31, 2007. The single mother, who was 23 at the time,
left behind two young daughters and a son. Cole was convicted of beating Michael Gerald Larson to death with a bat during a marijuana grow rip in Surrey in December 2007 and was sentenced to 13½
years in prison. He was found dead in his jail cell in Kent Institution in July of this year. Foul play was not suspected. Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which is handling the Shpeley case,
confirmed Cole’s connection. “He was a person of interest in that he was one of the last people with Candace before she disappeared,” Pound said, adding that many others are also considered “persons of interest” in the matter. Candace’s father,

Barr y Shpeley of Chilliwack, said he is aware that Cole was with his daughter in the days before her disappearance. “From what I gather, he was the last person to see (Candace).” Barry said he met Cole once for a few minutes at Candace’s home in Abbotsford about three weeks before she disappeared. He does not believe the two were in a relationship. He attended Cole’s sentencing hearing in the manslaughter case earlier this year. “There were a lot of questions I wanted him to answer, but he wouldn’t speak to me.” Barry hopes that anyone who knows what might have happened to Candace comes forward. On the day she went missing, she had lunch with her brother at an A&W restaurant in downtown Chilliwack. She visited friends in Surrey that evening, and Cole might have been among them. Also that night, RCMP ran the licence plate of her car twice while it was parked outside a suspected drug house in Surrey, but it is not known whether Candace was at that residence. She was scheduled to pick up her kids the following day, but never arrived. Her green 1995 Pontiac Grand Am was found nine days later in the area of Renfrew Street and 17th Avenue in Vancouver. That vehicle has been in the possession of police ever since. It was

Pound said it has taken this long for police to complete a full forensic exam of the vehicle, which will now be scrapped. She urged anyone with information to contact IHIT. “I know we have had leads but as the years go by, people think that the information is too small or perhaps they just forget, but releasing a vehicle and having it stimulate the public like this hopefully will bring people forward.” Barry and his wife are raising Candace’s two daughters – who were five and six when she disappeared – while her son, who was two, lives with his dad. Barry said they would all like to know what happened. “Our lives have continued on. It’s a little hard some days. Gaetz elected FVRD chair The Progress

While those internal issues are on the boil, there are external issues like Metro Valley’s incineration plans and the effect on
Fraser Valley air quality for Gaetz to contend with. The inaugural meeting also saw the election of Chilliwack city councillor Chuck Stam to head the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital board, and Abbotsford city councillor John Smith as vice-chair. Committee appointments will be approved at the next FVRD board meeting in January.

Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz was elected chair of the Fraser Valley Regional District board in a vote last Wednesday night by directors. Former board chair Patricia Ross was elected vice-chair. Ross told The Progress she was “a little conflicted” by the vote, but welcomed the chance to reduce the stress factor and focus on issues close to her heart like proposed incineration plans in Metro Vancouver. “I was conflicted because I feel so attached personally to the FVRD and the work we do,” she said. “But I felt entirely comfortable passing the torch to Sharon Gaetz,” she added. “She’s the hardestworking politician I’ve ever seen in my life.” Gaetz was equally complimentary towards Ross. “She’s done such an amazing job,” Gaetz
said. “I’ve got some large shoes to fill.” And some large challenges to deal with as the new board chair. “The big elephant in the room is Abbotsford,” Gaetz said. “The issue isn’t whether they stay or leave, it’s if they feel there are inequities ... are they getting the biggest bang for their buck.” Abbotsford city council is still considering leaving the FVRD and asking the B.C. govern-

Not feeling the love Chilliwack’s Paramount Theatre sparked more than a few romances in its day. But the old girl may have lost some of her allure. As reported by The Progress last week, City Hall’s efforts to find a suitor for the aging structure produced just two interested proposals. Granted, the Paramount doesn’t bring with her a rich dowry. Instead, the city estimates repairs to the building could cost as much as $300,000 – repairs admirers would have to pay for themselves. Chilliwack’s relationship with the Paramount is an interesting and accidental one. Although residents have shared with her their laughter and tears over the generations, it was only last year that city taxpayers gained an actual financial stake in the affair. As Chilliwack’s movie-going affections switched to the younger and more enticing Galaxy Cinemas at Eagle Landing, the Paramount’s owners ‘gifted’ the theatre to the City of Chilliwack. Within days, the grande dame’s heart went cold – literally. The heating system, built when the Paramount was built, warmed its last seat. City hall hoped to rekindle the romance by inviting interested groups and businesses to submit proposals,

stipulating that eligible suitors would have to detail their intentions in a business plan and provide evidence of an ability to pay for the repairs. More than 60 businesses and individuals reviewed the city’s request for proposals. Only two – an entertainment group and a church – were willing to take the plunge. Whether either of the two proposals earn the city’s consent remains to be seen. But city taxpayers should take more than a passing interest in the consummation of this affair. As the number of empty buildings in the downtown continues to grow, hopes of a revitalized downtown become more difficult to achieve. The tepid interest in the Paramount proposal may have had something to do with the theatre’s condition, and the stringent parameters laid down by the city. But it might also be uncertainty. For several months city politicians have hinted at the bold and innovative incentives contained in the city’s yet-to-be-released Downtown Action Plan. Until it is released, developers will wait. And Chilliwack’s empty storefronts will continue to line the dance floor, like aging spinsters hoping for a partner. ~ Greg Knill, Chilliwack Progress

It is the moment, actually 9:30 pm to be precise, when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. That means that the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun. At this point, as the sun appears to pause then start its journey northward, it means that, for us, the days start getting longer again and the sun climbs higher in the sky. Good. Figuring this stuff out comes down to folks at time laboratories calculating nanoseconds of time with the use of atomic clocks in Greenwich, England, the original ground zero of world time, and other time labs around the world. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) became the world’s time standard at the Washington Meridian

It was agreed back then that the Prime Meridian (the longitude defined to be 0 degrees) passed right through the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, in southeast London, U.K. This lofty time point has other more convoluted references. It is also known Margaret as Coordinated Universal Time EVANS (UTC), it’s sometimes called UT1, and it’s used as Zulu Time in aviation. Getting the time right is set by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures based in Sevres, France and known by its French acronym BIPM – Bureau International des Poids et Mesures. The BIPM’s Time Department
calculates UTC based on input from some 400 atomic clocks held in 70 national metrology institutes, observatories and other institutions in 48 nations. The world-wide distribution of timing centres guarantees accuracy to a nanosecond (a billionth of a second) and broad dissemination of UTC. BIPM doesn’t stop with time. Under the Metre Convention of 1875 (which created BIPM in the first place in a treaty ratified by 55 nations), the agency ensures the uniformity of units of weights and measures around the world. It’s the official keeper of the international prototype of the kilogram. Who knew? Ancient people didn’t, of course. But they knew the significance of the winter solstice enough to know that mid winter was a turning point for the lengthening of the day and the returning warmth of
the sun. That was as good excuse as any for celebrating, feasting on some freshly slaughtered cattle and downing some well fermented beer. From Yule traditions in Nordic lands when large logs were burned to the worship of Oden in northern Europe and Saturnalia, Juvenalia and Mithra in Italy, pagan gods were remembered in the time honoured ritual of eating and dancing that went on for days. December 25th became the birthday of the ‘invincible sun’ in the third century according to the dictates of Emperor Aurelian. Then, in 273 the Christian church set this date as the birth of Christ and by 336 the Roman feast to the sun became the celebration of Christ’s birth. There was likely a morsel of politics mixed up in this. By holding Christmas at the

same time as some of the traditional festivities, religious leaders theorized that the Christian celebration would become more popular. They were right on that score. Over the centuries, pagan rituals were replaced with church-going, celebrations, feasting and gift-giving. Christmas came to dominate the mid-winter festivals, triggering new customs and traditions along the way. The exact date of Christ’s birth, of course, isn’t known beyond a guess or two at the year, historians putting it sometime between 7 and 2 BC. And the season could be off. The concept of shepherds tending flocks of sheep in the night maybe puts the date closer to lambing time. But either way, the winter solstice and Christmas are times of special celebration.

Cultus Lake faces garbage threat In reading this article (“Taking care of Chilliwack’s jewel Cultus Lake,� Progress, Dec. 13) sent to me by a friend it raised a question I would like to pose to Ms. Robinson. I am a 50-year Sunnyside Campground participant and a long time supporter and avid lover of Cultus Lake. A couple of summers ago my husband and I stopped to chat with a dive group that were using the lake for a training program. We naturally inquired as to “what they saw down there.� Not surprised but rather horrified at
their response of “thousands and thousands of cans and bottles and garbage.� How damaging is that environmentally and why has nothing ever been done about cleaning that up? This, by the way was just in the area around Main Beach and along that stretch of houses. Also, the milfoil problem has been left totally unattended for the last many years (even though the park board has a fund for such things). The beloved swim areas are now almost completely choked out by it all along the shore line.
I would dearly love someone to pay these issues some attention and start the Lake clean up there. As to the sewage issues, I agree they must be addressed. Why then is the park board conversing in camera on a condo development to sit right on the shore line where the old Marina was and tie into the already overstressed sewage system of Cultus and/or Sunnyside Campground? I would certainly welcome some informed and helpful dialogue on these subjects.

Knowing I have atrial fibrillation, my husband took me to the emergency department at Chilliwack hospital. Atrial fibrillation occurs when the heart
ceases to pump and flutters. The danger is that as the blood is not moving regularly through the heart, clots can form on the heart wall and break off, leading to strokes. I was admitted to emergency and placed in the cardiac cubicle with all the sophisticated monitoring equipment, and observed for several
hours. Eventually it was decided that I needed a cardiac conversion to shock the heart back into normal rhythm and the team was assembled. After a short anesthetic, I awoke to find the heart had reverted to regular rhythm. Thanks to quick and accurate diagnosis, careful monitoring and effec-
tive treatment I returned home in six hours in normal rhythm with normal blood pressure and feeling greatly relieved and grateful. I am grateful for the kindness and efficiency of attractive and sophisticated emergency department and to a country which provides this type of treatment to everyone. Celia D. Rogers
The Spirit of Christmas found at Winks During this time of year it is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, the business of the holidays, malls are busy, parking stalls rare, horns are honking noise is everywhere‌until I came across Winks Home, Garden & Gifts in Sardis. I live in Abbotsford and was looking for somewhere to get something special and I ended up at Winks, I was greeted by a fragrance that emanated Christmas, the gentle sounds of carols in the
background and the most pleasant smile of a lady named Wendy (also known as Winks). Wendy guided me through her treasures on display and when I described what I was trying to find she knew exactly what I needed to buy and she wrapped it with such artistry. While I waited at her counter I saw a jar where she was collecting money for a local charity, a cookbook she was promoting and giving all proceeds to another charity and
to top that off she is raising funds to heat an orphanage! I asked her why was she doing all this while at the same time trying to run a business is it because of Christmas? She replied “because they are in need� that’s it because they are in need no other reason, that to me is the true Spirit of Christmas and I am so glad that I was able to find it at Winks, Thank you, Wendy. Don’t judge RCMP by the few bad apples The old saying that there are a few bad apples in every barrel is very true. In an organization that employes over 31,000 individuals there are going to be a few that will commit acts that are detrimental to the many. An overwhelming majority of the RCMP are responsible men and
women dedicated to performing their duties in a professional manner. Theirs is often an unenviable task where they must deal with the most undesirable and often dangerous elements of society that is becoming ever more violent. Adding to their difficulties is the seriously
under staffed court system that sees many hardened criminals walking the streets after serving ridiculously lenient sentences for committing serious crimes. If we are to have a save and enjoyable society we must recognize the realities of the current situation and pro-

The BC Conservatives have set a Jan. 17 date for its nomination meeting, but no location has been selected. Cummins said more candidates are waiting in the wings, but none have filed nomination papers so far. Council has some big decisions to make come January about the status of the historic Paramount Theatre building. As reported by The Progress last week, two submissions emerged from the city’s recent request for proposals process for the old theatre building on Yale Road east. “Council will have to decide if we want to go with one of those proposals we received, or close it down and invite proposals through a new process,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. Demolition of the structure is possible, since the renovation costs might be prohibitive, she said. Estimates are from $150,000 to $300,000 to bring the building up to provincial code standards.

“Obviously we’d prefer the revitalization option, but the building is going to have its challenges,” Gaetz said. “There is great potential there, but it’s going to cost a pretty penny.” Council will not be reviewing the matter until after Christmas. Mayor Gaetz toured the boardedup building with some Vancouver media recently. “It was weird walking through the building,” she said. “There is still popcorn left on the floor.” One submission came from Revolution Church, and the other was from Protocol Developments with an entertainment proposal. Analysis of the proposals has not been completed yet, and staff will be checking to see if they have the financial resources and skills to undertake the renovations or redevelopment work needed.

Dove Girls boosts self esteem in tweens Katie Bartel The Progress Funding cuts weren’t enough to stop Gabe D’Archangelo from boosting his students’ self esteem. When the Evans elementary principal was notified last spring that Big Brothers would be cutting funding for its eight-week Go Girls program, D’Archangelo didn’t follow suit. Instead of shutting the program down, he expanded it. It was too important not to continue, he said. Go Girls is a program designed to instill positive self image and healthy living into tween-aged girls before they hit middle school.
Research shows that 47 per cent of Canadian girls between the ages 10 and 14 avoid going to the beach, participating in physical activities, and voicing their opinions because they feel insecure about their looks; 55 per cent feel pressure to be beautiful by the time they’re 14. For many girls, middle school is a cesspool of self esteem issues, negative image and peer pressure. Evans is trying to change that. “We want to give our students a repertoire of skills they can fall back on when situations come up at middle school,” said D’Archangelo. However, because Go Girls was only an eight-week program that completed in April, D’Archangelo felt it wasn’t fully meeting the needs of his Grade 6 students.

“April, May and June is when our students face the most challenges,” he said. “They’re excited to be leaving elementary, but they’re also hesitant about going as well. Those last six to eight weeks of school is when these girls have more questions than answers.” D’Archangelo approached the school’s child youth care worker Tanya Harnett, who had been facilitating Go Girls, and asked if it was possible to develop a more in-depth year-long program. With Dove’s True You workbook as a guideline, the Evans elementary Dove Girls program was born. Dove Girls operates for one hour, once a week after school for two small groups of Grade 5 and 6 girls, each with 11 and 12 students. The focus is to educate girls on a wider definition of beauty beyond their looks. They
discuss issues around image, self esteem, and feelings. They learn about how the beauty of women portrayed in media outlets such as magazines and TV is often Photoshopped or otherwise altered to perceived perfection. They discuss topics surrounding personal hygiene, physical changes, healthy living, bullying and peer pressure. And they build on relationships with trusted, out-of-school mentors, such as their mom, grandma, aunt, or sister to ensure they always have someone they can go to for advice. The intimate size of the group is key. “Some of the discussions are very uncomfortable for the girls ... and by having a small enough group, they’re more likely to participate and speak up,” said D’Archangelo. With only a few more days to support the Salvation Army kettle campaign, revenues are significantly lower than expected. Chilliwack Salvation Army spokesman Ian Pratt estimated they were down $10,000 from last year this time. “More people are accessing our services but the donations have decreased,” he said. A total of 120 emergency hampers per day are going
out the door in Chilliwack from the Care and Share Centre, and they’ve seen a 20 per cent increase in the demand. “That’s a lot more need that we’re seeing,” said Pratt. Some of those who used to be regular Sally Ann donors are now struggling to make ends meet themselves. Even though the campaign ends Saturday, a couple of kettles still need volunteers, he said. They have 12 volunteers ringing bells and accepting Salvation Army donations,
and a couple of sporadic ones. The goal for the 2011 campaign was $160,000, of which 100 per cent goes to programs in the community. Chilliwack police and fire officials are investigating a fire that erupted in a vacant commercial building on Yale Road early Friday morning. Heavy smoke and flames were venting from the single-story, 3500-square foot building when firefighters arrived at the scene in the 51000-block Yale Road just after 2 a.m. Firefighters from three firehalls battled the blaze for nearly three hours. The fire had burned into the attic, making it difficult to extinguish. The basement was also gutted, and there was “significant” damage to the main floor where two businesses were located.

Guide dog offers gift of independence Chilliwack’s newest immigrant is a tall, blonde, and walks for four legs. Ozzy, a two year old yellow Labrador Retriever, is a professionally trained guide dog for local resident Bruce Hansen. Hansen, 31, is completely blind in one eye and has no peripheral vision in the other. When Hansen was 10, he suffered from a brain tumour which has caused his vision to deteriorate over the years. “In medical terms, perfect vision is 20/20 and mine is 20/500,” explains Hansen. “I can sort of make out shapes, but I wouldn’t be able to tell if the object in front of me is a building or a moving vehicle.” Prior to being matched with Ozzy by charity B.C. Guide Dog Services, Hansen relied on a white cane and the help of friends and family to get around. “Even after years and years of using a cane, I was still having problems. I was falling off sidewalks or walking into things. It got to the point where I just didn’t feel secure outside [by myself] anymore.” Hansen officially “graduated” with his new canine partner in October after three weeks of training with B.C. Guide Dog’s certified instructor Henny van der Leeuw. “We practised on local routes, on roads with and without sidewalks. There’s a lot of repetition but it’s important for the dog and the person,” says van der Leeuw who has trained guide dogs for over 10 years. “The very first day after graduation, Ozzy and I took a bus out to Cottonwood Mall then over to Canadian Tire. I’ve never been able to go out there by myself,” says Hansen. With Ozzy by his side, Hansen no longer has to wait for his wife to come home from work to run errands. “It’s like getting a driver’s license. I am more independent and that really gives you a better sense of self.” Meanwhile, Ozzy is settling in comfortably in his new home. He has made a new playmate in Hansen’s twoand-a-half-year-old niece and is quickly bonding with Hansen. “Ozzy is always near me, making sure that I’m OK,” says Hansen. Hansen approached
The Progress with his story to raise awareness about guide dogs but also to thank some Good Samaritans that he recently met in town. “I was on the bus and a driver named Rhonda went out of her way to call out each stop when she saw that I am blind.” He adds, “Another lady in town offered to stay on the bus until I reached my stop, even though it meant that she would have to ride the entire route again just to get to her stop. I didn’t catch her name, but I’m really hoping she reads this and knows how appreciative I am of her kindness.” B.C. Guide Dogs is a charity based out of the Lower Mainland. Breeding and training a dog like Ozzy takes two years and costs $37,000 but clients like Hansen pay only a nominal $1 for a guide dog and training. Because the charity receives minimal government funding, it relies heavily on donations. Ozzy, in particular, was sponsored by more than 60 individuals who have received letters “from Ozzy” over the last two years about what he has been learning. Now that Ozzy has found a life partner, the last letter that sponsors will receive will be from Hansen himself describing how Ozzy

They’ve undergone a stunning transformation in only a couple of months, and changes were celebrated in grand style with an official opening of the new day

Reid bought the faltering Sardis business more than two years ago, vowing to one day provide a big-city day-spa experience, “but at Chilliwack prices.” It’s part of the overarching vision. “I think it is important to keep our prices at a level where everyone can afford them,” she says. “I really wanted a place where we could all come and enjoy the luxury of the spa without having to mortgage the house to do it.” Some of the eye-popping elements include a shimmering water wall, dazzling crystal chandeliers and a giant rock feature in the guest seating area. Some of the impressive reno work was executed by a local business called Stonetree Studios. “We have a fabulous team,” says Reid. “More than anything Gente Bella is about the people.” Now proudly featuring a hand-picked staff of 30, including estheticians, stylists and other technicians, Gente Bella prides itself on delivering fantastic customer service. Services run the gamut from delightful facials, to rejuvenating skin care like microdermabrasion or spray tans. There are, of course, self-care stan-
dards like lovely manicures and pedicures, along with a range of sigh-inducing massages, wraps and body treatments. When Reid comes through the door of her salon and spa, she does it “as a client,” assessing everything from the perspective of the clientele, to make sure all their bases are covered. They offer complimentary use of their coveted eucalyptus steam room or infrared sauna, when available, and a free shampoo is always in the offing to remove the massage oil that’s seeped into a client’s hairdo. Young Road in October, renaming it the Gente Bella Academy. “Our stylists love to share their knowledge,” she says. Gente Bella has also made a point of supporting its community by getting involved in a range of Chilliwack charities from Chilliwack Hospice Society to local hockey tournaments and Dry Grad events at the local high schools. “It’s important to give back to your community, and I like to support kids whenever I can,” Reid says. ✞ Obituaries BODENER Frieda
Frieda Bodener passed away peacefully at the Bradley Center on Wednesday, Dec. 14th, 2011. She was born October 15th, BODENER 1929 in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, the older of two girls born to Henry and Ida Frey. She lived with parents in Sagathun, Sask. until her father passed away in 1932. Then her mother, and her two daughters moved to Irvine, and then to Medicine Hat, Alberta. Frieda’s sister, Esther passed away in 1944 of typhoid fever. Frieda also contracted typhoid but miraculously survived. On October 24th, 1944 Frieda’s mother married Ferdinand Krause; her new family now included two step-brothers, Ken and Morley Krause. The family moved to Chilliwack, B.C. and settled on a farm on Gill Road, in Rosedale. On August 20th, 1952 Frieda married Leo Bodener of Chilliwack. Leo and Frieda took over the family farm on Evans Road, and lived there for 32 years; milking cows, haying, raising laying hens and fryers, and had a large vegetable and flower garden. They retired from farming in 1984, and moved to Stevenson Road. In June, 1998 they moved to the Birchwood Retirement Home. In her retirement years Frieda did a lot of knitting, crocheting, cross stitch as well as beautiful petit point works of art. September 2008, Frieda moved to the Bradley Center. During her lifetime she was a member of the Chilliwack Evangelical Missionary Church for 60 years. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 21st, 11:00 am at the Evangelical Missionary Church, corner of Princess and Williams. Pastor Glenn Driedger officiating with interment held at the Chilliwack Cemeteries. Frieda is survived by Morley and Bertha Krause, Drumheller, Alberta and Ken and Dorleen Krause of Chilliwack. The extended family includes, Ella Ritz of Edmonton, Agnes and Fred Mammel, Clarence and Mary Bodener all of Chilliwack. Many nieces, nephews and cousins including Leroy and Pauline Mann of Medicine Hat and their families; as well as special friends, Elfrieda Toews and Lorraine Krause who visited her faithfully. She was predeceased by her husband Leo Bodener in August, 2002; her sister Esther Frey, her father, Henry Frey, her step-father, Ferdinand Krause and her mother, Ida (Frey) Krause. If desired, donations may be made to the Gideon Bible Society. The family would like to thank Dr. John Hamilton, and the staff at the Bradley Center for their loving dedicated care. BURR Robert “Bob”
Bob Burr passed away peacefully on Friday, December 16 at Cascade Lodge, Chilliwack at BURR the age of 91. Bob was born November 19, 1920 in Edmonton, AB and was raised in the farming district of Irma, AB. In 1943, he enlisted in the Canadian Army; Bob served for 29 years in Canada, West Germany, and Egypt. His family traveled with him everywhere except for his time served in Egypt. In 1960, Bob settled in Chilliwack where he spent the rest of his days. He was an avid swimmer and loved to bowl, dance and golf. Bob is survived by daughter Carol (Everet) Kinsman; sons Ron (Kathy) Burr and Gary (Bev) Burr; grandchildren Robert and Donna Kinsman, Robyn (Chris) Nightingale, Brian (Kristen) Burr and Krystal (Jeremy) Sobie; greatgrandchildren Allysha and Serena Kinsman, Kiera Sobie; and step-great-grandchildren Alyssa and Nya Friesen. Bob is predeceased by his wife Evelyn. A Memorial Service will be held in the New Year at Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made in Bob’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society or Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Elsie Dan passed away peacefully on December 10, 2011 at Chilliwack Hospital at the age of 86 DAN years. She will be sadly missed by her children; Ervine Dan, Lorna Jimmie, Gloria Hillas and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by husband Andrew Dan and family members, Garry Dan, Elmer Dan, Andrea Jack and Velma Jack. DOHERTY Mary Louise Aug. 22, 1922 - Nov. 16, 2011 Dear Mary gracefully departed, her soul set free, at her home at the age of 89 years. Mary DOHERTY was born in Veteran, Alberta and raised in the farm life. Mary had one brother, Herman “Wes”, six years younger. Mary enlisted in the RCAF performing secretarial work in Vancouver and earned the rank of Sergeant.
Mary was predeceased by her mother, May Wetenkamp, in 1949 and her father August Wetenkamp in 1963 whom she nursed at his home until he passed away. Mary’s great passion was nature and she loved and nurtured her gardens, especially her “rose” garden. Her constant companion was her little dog “Goldie.” Goldie is being graciously cared for her by her good friend Marjorie who has 2 chihuahuas of her own. Mary had one son, Dan, whom she dearly loved. Dan and Mary lived for one another. Mary led a quiet, peaceful and thoughtful life. She will be remembered as a wise and intelligent woman who stood the test of time and life’s challenges. She is survived by her loving brother, Wes (Lynne); niece Sandra; and nephew Doug (Cleone). Mary will be greatly missed by friends in both Chilliwack and Kamloops and family that loved her.
HOLDEN Doris Dec. 30, 1920 - Dec. 11, 2011 D o r i s passed away on December 11, 2011 in Agassiz, BC at the age of 90. She was Born HOLDEN in Regina, SK December 30, 1920. Doris is survived by her daughters Diane Singer & Pamela Holden; grandchildren Kristin, Karin, Todd & Ryan Singer and Brianne Holden & great-grandchild Bryce Singer. She was predeceased by her husband A. William Holden. Doris will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend...always there to guide us, support us and there to listen. The pillar of our family, she will be missed. We love you, Nanny. A private ceremony has been held for family.
KERR Dorothy
D o r o thy Kerr, 89, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Menno Hospital. KERR She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann; three sons, Harold (Shirley), Brian, and Gord (Lynda); seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Jack this year on November 4. Dorothy was born in Saskatoon to Jessie and Arthur Woolley, and was raised in Vancouver and surrounding area. Before she was married, she taught briefly at Stave Lake Elementary. In the early years, she was active in the Chilliwack United Church in the Women’s group and as a CGIT leader. Family was very important to Dorothy. She was a good mother and adored her grandchildren. She enjoyed knitting, reading, gardening and baking; passing along many recipes to her family. After Jack’s retirement, they enjoyed their acreage on Sumas Mountain, being with family and friends and their
many trips throughout Canada and the USA with Jackson Tours. They moved to Menno Terrace East in Abbotsford where they had been living for the past 2 years. A Memorial Gathering for both Jack and Dorothy is being planned for the spring. The family would like to thank the staff at Menno Terrace East and Menno Hospital for all their care and support. Frank Noel passed away unexpectedly on December 4, 2011 at Agassiz, BC at the age of 53 years. NOEL Frank was born and raised in the Fraser Valley. In this younger years, he worked in Beaten River for BC Rail, then ranching in the interior and also in construction and the forest industry. Frank had a great love for all animals and enjoyed his gardening. He enjoyed the occasional day of fishing as well. Frank will be lovingly remembered by sons Michael (Courtney & granddaughter Alexis) and son Tony; brothers Lawrence (Mary) and Gordon (Joan); sisters Deanne (Sandy), Loretta (Art), Marian (Bob), and Rhonda; father Herman (Bud) Noel; and numerous nieces and nephews. B a r r y Wayne Simmons passed away peacefully at his home on December 14th, 2011 in SIMMONS Agassiz. He was born in Winnipeg on June 16th, 1939, and moved to Vancouver at age four. He graduated from John Oliver High School and then worked with his father in construction. Soon after he pursued an education degree at UBC, accepting his first teaching position as the shop teacher at Agassiz Secondary. He later went on to become principal at Harrison and Kent Elementary Schools. He completed his Masters Degree in Curriculum Development, focussing on Mathematics. In total, Barry taught in the Kent School District for over 35 years. Barry was also an active member of the Agassiz volunteer fire department for over 20 years and a member of the Elks Lodge #311. He owned and flew a Cessna airplane during the 70s, a boat and motor home during the 80s, and finally settled on his fifth wheel trailer in the 90s. Barry enjoyed reading, woodworking, golf, RVing and traveling the world. Barry and his wife Jane set foot on
every continent except Antarctica, enjoying excursions to The Great Wall of China, African Safaris and his favourite Australia. He spent many hours working in his shop creating toys for his grandchildren and works of art in wood, never wanting to repeat a project twice. He loved playing golf at the Harrison Hot Springs Course with his buddies, holes 2 and 7 especially. Barry also loved spending time traveling with the trailer. Together Barry and Jane took trips to the US, across Canada and just to get away. He could always be found sitting in his chair carving a found piece of driftwood, working on a word puzzle or reading another novel with his faithful Pug, Fancy by his side. He is survived by his wife Jane, children Karen (Dwayne), Blair (Anna) and Todd, grandchildren Paige and Riley and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Richard, his mother Edith and his sister Louise. A celebration of Barry’s life will be planned for Spring of 2012.
