Falls Golf Resort sale plan approved Robert Freeman The Progress The B.C. Supreme Court has approved a plan to sell the financially troubled Falls Golf Resort and all its assets to Vancouver-based Pinnacle International Lands Inc. The plan approved last Friday sets out a timeline for the proposed transaction, including a meeting date for creditors, before completion of the sale to Pinnacle on or before Nov. 30. A PricewaterhouseCoopers monitor, appointed by the court when Blackburn Developments president Rick Wellsby applied for bankruptcy protection in early February, selected Pinnacle’s $15-million bid as the “most favourable” offer because it included both the golf course and surrounding development lands and “will provide the highest return to all creditors.” The PwC monitor also recommended the court direct Wellsby and other Blackburn principals to “immediately cease any further efforts to identify an alternative restructuring plan.” Wellsby had hoped to put together his own restructuring plan for court approval. He declined comment Tuesday on the court’s decision until more details of the impact of the proposed sale become clear. “All I can say about the Pinnacle deal for now is that they are the chosen bidder by the monitor, and we will see what takes place over the next six to eight weeks,” he said in an email to The Progress. A Pinnacle official did not return a request for an interview about the company’s plans, if the sale is completed.

About 40 to 50 residents who bought properties developed by Blackburn near the golf course are not involved in the bankruptcy proceedings, but some may have made claims as investors in the company. However, the financial health of the hillside golf resort would have an obvious impact on their property values. According to a monitor’s report, the “Landus Group” (consisting of Landus Development Group Inc. and Home Equity Development Inc.) is the single largest creditor with total claims exceeding $23 million.

Blackburn’s total debt had spiralled up to $64 million, according to a monitor’s report, including $125,725 in taxes owed to the City of Chilliwack. The PwC monitor, who has effectively controlled the resort’s operations since February, was tasked with ensuring the company didn’t fall further into debt while a process for the sale was set up. The 162-acre golf course opened in 1996 and included a pro-shop, a restaurant and banquet facilities. The 71 acres of surrounding development lands have been approved for a mix of

commercial and residential uses. Pinnacle’s $15-million offer sets aside $2.85 million for Landau’s secured debt, $2 million for a mortgage registered against the golf course lands and a $10.5-million fund to pay bankruptcy fees, mortgagees and more than 100 unsecured creditors. In an earlier interview, Wellsby said the company’s financial troubles began in March this year when a mortgage holder called in a loan, which sparked a “cash crisis” and his subsequent petition for court protection. Earlier, in September,

2008, Wellsby had announced an ambitious plan to add a 940,000-square-foot sports facility to the golf resort that would house four ice rinks, an eight-sheet curling rink, and a multi-purpose indoor sports field. A 240-room hotel, a luxury spa, plus 90 “high-end” residential units and a 135-room dormitory for a youth sports camp were also included in the plan. There have been several grandiose developments proposed in Chilliwack’s eastern hillsides over recent years, but, so far, only Wellsby’s 1989 vision of The Falls Golf Resort has become a reality. rfreeman@theprogress.com

Federal negotiators have pulled out of contract talks with provincial officials for RCMP police services in B.C. But Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz says she finds it “hard to believe” the RCMP will withdraw its services. “I can’t imagine the RCMP would give up the kind of resources we have given them,” she said, like the new billion-dollar headquarters for the RCMP’s E-Division now under construction in Surrey, or the RCMP’s Pacific Region Training Centre here in Chilliwack. RCMP Insp. Ken Burton, officer in charge of support services at the PRTC, said he doesn’t expect a “significant change” at the training centre, even if the RCMP contract is not renewed. “There will always be a need for public safety training,” he said. “B.C. is a significant partner in the PRTC,” he said, and training would still be needed for members of a provincial police force replacing the RCMP, and for other agencies like correctional officers, border guards, conservation officers and court sheriffs. Much of the investment in training programs at the PRTC is “provincially driven,” he said, like the PRIME (Police Records Information Management Environment) program, an initiative the legislates all police forces in B.C. to use the same system to record crime events. “It’s not a case of the RCMP leaving and taking funding with us,” he said, and there will “always be a need for an RCMP presence in B.C.” as Canada’s national police force. FHA seeks contempt order at raw milk farm Robert Freeman

tion granted in Dec. 2010, and Michael Schmidt, who took over operations of the farm following that court decision. Schmidt is also the subject of similar court action in Ontario. A recent ruling there reversed an earlier court decision that allowed Schmidt’s raw milk operation to continue on the grounds that health and safety regulations were not violated by the “cowshare” arrangement in which the milk produced by the cow herd is con-

The Progress The Fraser Health Authority has applied for a finding that the founder and the operator of a raw milk co-op in Chilliwack are in contempt of an earlier court injunction against distributing unpasteurized milk to its members. Gordon Watson, co-founder of the “cowshare” on Prairie Central Road, is named in the application as a respondent in the court injunc-

More candidates appear as nomination opens Jennifer Feinberg The Progress More council candidates are coming forward as the nomination period opened Tuesday in Chilliwack for the Nov. 19 local election. Construction business owner Gerry Goosen said his goal is to get active locally and involved in making Chilliwack “grow successful” with solid business management. Goosen is 53, and married with four children. “I’m willing to listen and discuss Chilliwack best interests with residents,” he said. He supports “traditional” values and wants to promote “responsible” city management with his candidacy, according to his press release. The former dairy farmer also said he favours long-term downtown development and fostering a safe environment for children. The Chilliwack secondary grad was a volunteer firefighter in Rosedale for 13 years. Aside from Goosen, first-time candidates Dick Harrington, Garth Glassel, Ken Popove and Ron Wedel have also announced they are running for city council. Sharon Gaetz confirmed she is running for re-elec-

tion as Chilliwack mayor, and councillors Sue Attrill, Ken Huttema, and Stewart MacLean said they will also stand for re-election. Coun. Pat Clark will not be running again, and Coun. Chuck Stam said he will announce his intentions on Oct. 12. There’s been some speculation that the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce president might make a bid for a council seat. Jason Lum was publicly seeking the advice of friends and family on Twitter this week about the prospect of his running, but he has yet to declare officially. Nomination packages came out on Oct. 4 for the local election for city mayor, six city councillors, seven school district trustees and five Cultus Lake Park Board commissioners. The nomination period ends on Oct. 14, with the declaration of all the candidates. Oct. 18 is the deadline for challenge of nominations. Handling election-related issues will be William Storen, Chief Election Officer at 604.703.4704 or Karla Graham, Deputy Chief Election Officer at 604.793.2986 jfeinberg@theprogress.com twitter.com/CHWKjourno

sumed by members. Schmidt has vowed to appeal the Ontario ruling. Watson said he welcomes the prosecution because the case against him “is laughably thin.” “My hurdle is to get a proper trial,” he said in an email to The Progress. “Only by getting a fullblown trial, will I be able to make full answer and defence.” Watson contends that the case is not about health, but about protecting the interests of the dairy

industry. Last year, co-op co-founder Alice Jongerden was found in contempt of court for trying to get around the court injunction by distributing raw milk labelled “Not For Human Consumption” to cowshare members. Schmidt took over operations of the farm after that ruling, but continued distributing raw milk - not as food but as a line of cosmetics called Enzymatic Bath Lotion. Justice Nathan Smith said in his

■ S HINING A P URPLE L IGHT

contempt ruling in the Jongerden case that the injunction is “clearly intended to prevent the distribution or raw milk in circumstances where human consumption is known to be a real and substantial possibility.” The FHA’s application follows an Aug. 25 search warrant executed at the farm. Nothing was seized at the time, but photographs were taken and reviewed to determine if the permanent court injunction was being obeyed.

Father busted driving with open beer in his hand

INTO THE NIGHT

A 57-year-old Surrey driver was arrested Sunday on Highway 1 near Chilliwack with an open beer can in hand and his 12-year-old son in the passenger seat. “As a parent you have responsibilities, and this kind of thing is very upsetting to hear about,” RCMP Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said in a news release. But thanks to a woman who called police to report the erratic driver, and an off-duty officer who also saw the car “weaving between the slow and fast lane” and “straddling the centre line,” a tragedy was avoided, Hollingsworth said. “Had they not called to report this incident, the stor y could’ve ended very differently,” she said. The white, 2007 GMC Yukon pulling a red-andwhite coloured boat was “all over the road” when it was reported heading westbound on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Lickman Road overpass at about 8 p.m. A Chilliwack RCMP officer located the vehicle and pulled it over. “The driver had an open can of beer in his hand,” Hollingsworth said. The “scared and emotional” boy was taken by police to his grandmother’s house in Abbotsford to wait for his mother to pick him up. The unidentified father is facing several alcohol-related charges.

Minutes after a string of purple lights was illuminated at city hall Tuesday, Mayor Sharon Gaetz chats with an attendee with purple bulb in hand. The tree-lighting ceremony was held in Chilliwack to launch Purple Light Nights, a campaign reminding everyone that domestic violence is unacceptable. For more information call 604-792-2760. ‘Monster pumpkin’ at Chilliwack’s last farmers’ market Jennifer Feinberg The Progress The monster pumpkin is “up there” with the biggest they’ve ever seen. An oversized pumpkin will be on display at the Chilliwack Farmers’ Market in the Minter Country Garden store parking lot until Oct.

8, the last farmers’ market of the season. “We are holding a little contest this Saturday and asking everyone to guess the pumpkin’s weight,” said Geoffrey Dalman, market manager. You can thump it, but don’t try to lift it. It’s more than a metre across and a metre high. “It can’t be carried by just one

person.” The prodigious pumpkin was grown by Jake Dyck at the family farm on Camp River Road. The family had a table at the weekly market and became a source of favourite baked that goods customers took home. “Oh yes Eva baked up a storm for Saturday markets,” Dalman said.

Province seeks input on health and education Want to give your two-cents worth about the provincial budget to the B.C. government? You can do that in person next week as the gover nment’s standing committee on finance holds a public consultation hearing in Chillwack. “This is a great opportunity for members of our community, whose taxes pay for ever ything from infrastructure projects to policing, to let the province know what their spending priorities are,” Chilliwack MLA John Les said in a news release announcing the hearing. “Listening to the public is an important part of fiscal accountability as we pursue our goal of delivering responsible provincial budgets,” ChilliwackHope MLA Barr y Penner said. The hearing starts a 9 a.m. Oct. 12 in

I never thought I would be writing a testimonial about hearing aids! Most people expect to eventually need to wear reading glasses as they get a bit older, but I never would have expected that I would need hearing aids. I have to say that once I had my hearing test at Crystal Vision and Hearing Centre it was explained to me although my hearing loss was not severe, my quality of life would be different hearing clearly. I have to say once I was Àtted and got them adjusted to suit my needs I did hear much clearer and even had to turn the volume down on my car radio! I felt the need to write this because I want people to know that no matter what your age is, if you feel you may have some hearing loss go get checked, the screening is free and if you do require hearing aids the staff at Crystal Vision and Hearing Centre are excellent with making the transition an easy one. Thanks again guys! Samuel F.

R AESIDE

Worker safety first The details of the tragedy at a Langley mushroom farm on Sept. 5, 2008 have finally emerged, as the owners of the farm were in court after pleading guilty to numerous health and safety charges. Three workers died and two others suffered permanent brain damage. They were asked to go into a confined space to clear the blockage in a valve containing the chicken manure, straw and gypsum, which are used to make mushroom compost. This came after the farm owners had called a plumber to the scene. He was unable to fix the blockage and asked them to call a sewer pumping service. Instead, the job fell to the workers. As outlined in court, they were never given any information on working in confined spaces, nor was there any occupational health and safety training offered. Many of the people who work on such farms, in Langley and elsewhere in the Fraser Valley, are relatively new immigrants to Canada. They often get the jobs because they have limited job prospects and have some connections to the farm owners. They are also willing to work for low wages at jobs which involve hard physical labour. It is absolutely essential that anyone who hires other people to work in a business offer basic occupational health and safety training. It is also important that when there are hazards, such as confined spaces, employees be fully familiar with the dangers involved. They need to know when they can say “no.” The B.C. Federation of Labour has taken a major interest in this case and deserves credit for highlighting the importance of employers following basic safety practices. Farm workers are just as valuable as any employee on any job site. This case points out the need to ensure they fully understand all the risks of any job they are asked to perform. – Black Press

Dumb municipal leaders attack smart meters VANCOUVER – The annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention spent quite a bit of time talking about new wireless technology. Unfortunately, most of it was wasted on ignorance and fear, fanned by the NDP, Green Party and some like-minded opportunists in local government. A tiny group of protesters gathered outside the Vancouver convention centre each morning, setting up a pile of picket signs wailing about imagined smart meter sins from privacy invasion to human rights violation. One of them allowed that she was wearing “special clothing” to ward off the bad rays. That’s understandable, since BC Hydro calculates that a delegate’s wireless signal exposure from four days at the UBCM convention is equivalent to standing next to a smart meter for 1,147 years. And that’s not even calculating

those other horrible sources of electromagnetic energy bombarding downtown Vancouver, such as traffic lights, spark plugs, and let’s not forget the Sun or Earth’s molten core. It wasn’t all foolishness, however. I attended an economic development panel, at which physician and cabinet minister Margaret MacDiarmid Tom described the conFLETCHER tinuing extension of rural cell phone and internet service underway since the extension of the B.C. government’s contract with Telus. There was not a discouraging word about cell phone towers, the innovation that spawned the antiwireless cult in California many years ago. Quite the contrary.

MacDiarmid was beseeched to get cell service to northern Vancouver Island and un-serviced parts of the Interior, and to cut through the multi-ministry maze still required for routine approval of towers. Cell phones save lives on remote highways. In the main hall, supposedly experienced municipal leaders continued to parrot fear of “microwaves” and such drivel, either because they believe it or because they are pandering to those who do. This continued on talk radio, which stoked the smart meter “controversy” all week, apparently because it reliably generates angry calls. The descent into farce became complete when delegates had a show of hands on a resolution to place a moratorium on a smart meter installation program that BC Hydro has already paid for. The vote was too close to call, so

they had to fish out their wireless voting devices to vote about 55 per cent in favour of the moratorium. Premier Christy Clark was asked after the convention if her government would contemplate a moratorium on meter installation. “No,” she replied. This is not surprising, since the motion effectively asks BC Hydro to waste $930 million. “I’ve spent quite a bit of time talking with the experts about it,” Clark said. “I don’t share those health concerns, because when we’re surrounded by wireless and cell phones, there are a lot of other sources of the problem that they’re concerned about.” I’ve argued with numerous people about this. They often start with an exaggerated claim about the World Health Organization’s risk rating. In fact, WHO acknowledges that people who claim hypersen-

sitivity to electromagnetic signals can’t identify them in controlled studies. WHO also notes that cell phone tower emissions are effectively five times weaker than the FM radio and TV signals to which we’ve all been exposed for decades. Cell base stations reach no more than two per cent of international limits. And smart meter signals are much weaker than that. I’m done arguing with people who make up their own facts. I’ll just address those who haven’t bought into this nonsense. Please, survey your council candidates on smart meters, and on Nov. 19, support only those who have the common sense to understand what a smart grid is. Be a friend to public education Chilliwack School District No. 33 wants you! Public education is important. Being a member of the Chilliwack Board of Education is a rewarding job complete with responsibilities and obligations. In the civic election three years ago, only eight people ran for seven positions. Public education is one of society’s most treasured institutions. Please consider putting your name forward as a candidate and potential trustee. Being a friend of public education and working together with colleagues on a board of education has challenges, opportunities and rewards. Trustees and the executive team working in

a collaborative environment is critical to the district’s obligation and responsibility to the community to provide an education that will prepare all students for life beyond Grade 12. The board of education is responsible for the approval and monitoring of an operating budget of about $110 million. In addition there is a capital budget that presently approaches another $100 million. Further, the board of education is charged with the job of passing policy that guides the district in its day-to-day operations. Re: Shining a purple light on domestic violence I was glad to read the article in the Tuesday, Sept. 27 Progress that states domestic violence is completely unacceptable in Chilliwack and anywhere else. Unfortunately, this was not always the case, and it brought back some very unpleasant memories. In the sum-

mer of 1982, my husband (who is now my ex-husband) was drinking heavily and became enraged at something I said, or maybe I looked at him the “wrong” way, I don’t recall. He grabbed me by the shirt collar and slammed my head into the wall. I’ll never forget the screams of my fouryear-old son who was forced to witness this.

I called the police and explained that my husband had assaulted me and that I was fearful for my own and my son’s safety. The police officer that I spoke to said they would send someone out right away. I hung up the phone and informed my husband that the police were on the way. I then waited, and waited.... No one came.

When I called back to police told me that no one would be coming after all, and that police believed that domestic violence was something that should be resolved privately at home without police intervention. I will never forget the feeling of shame and humiliation that I felt when I hung up the phone.

Love is at the core of true faith Every Sunday I and my wife, Urmil Singla visit church (dera) to attend a satsang (gathering of people) in Surrey. Every time different topics are discussed by different teachers (pathies). It’s a one-hour lesson – half in English, half in Punjabi. It teaches us so many methods to please God, but the main thing is “simpan” (repetition and remembrance). Men are men, whether of the East or of the West, and are all one. No one belongs to a higher caste as there is atma (soul) in each of them, and that is a particle of the Lord. Kabir says:

“The soul is a particle of Rama (God)”. God is never pleased with one who injures the feelings of others. Even though he may perform thousands of rituals and worship. He may observe thousands of fasts and say prayers thousands of times in each fast and may remember Him for thousands of nights; all these are not acceptable to the Lord if he injures the feelings of anyone. You may drink wine, set fire to a holy place, burn the holy book, or whatever, but don’t injure the feelings of another man.

Therefore, unless you make man happy, you can’t win grace of the Lord. If you want the Lord to shower his grace on you, then you should do good to his creatures. We have no right to call the Lord our Father unless we are in a position to call all men our brothers. We earn health and wealth in life, but at the end we leave all these things behind. Nothing will go with us. So please love all the creatures of the creator, be they human beings or animals. Madan Singla

ed in the next couple of weeks. “We’re finalizing the details of that,” he said. An expanded hotel and academic facilities are also included in a 25-year plan for the PRTC site located in the Canada Education Park. Gaetz said B.C. municipalities have “no voice” in the contract talks, even though cities pay 90 per cent of RCMP costs. Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender represents municipalities in negotiations, but has no vote. “It’s a little bit frightening for local government not to have a voice,” Gaetz said, pointing out that one-third of Chilliwack’s budget goes to policing costs, and Surrey spends nearly half its budget on RCMP services. She said B.C. negotiators want a number of concessions like restrictions on “unlimited” sick pay and the cost of train-

ing RCMP cadets. The provincial government has reached a “tipping point,” she said, in the costs it bears for RCMP services in the smaller communities and rural areas. Gaetz said policing costs are a major concern for municipalities the get only eight cents out of every tax dollar. “Obviously, all of us want to see police in our communities, we all want to afford that, but there comes a time when we can’t,” she said. Burton said part of the “magic” of the PRTC is that it provides training for a large number of agencies in one central location, instead of taxpayers’ dollars being spent on training facilities in several different locations. “I can’t imagine (the PRTC) will not continue,” he said. rfreeman@theprogress.com twitter.com/paperboy2

Overall it’s been a good market season, despite the adverse spring and early summer weather. He estimates they’ve seen 20 per cent year over year growth. Ultimately he hopes the pumpkin will bring people out to the last event of the year. “I have never seen such a big pumpkin,” Dalman says. “You have to come down and see it along with all the other wonderful vendors and their food. “This is our last market for this season and it has been a great year, thank you for all your community support.”

The ALC tabled a new strategic vision for the future last November but the proposed new directions are stalled in Victoria because the provincial government has yet to make any decisions. On all nine of the original recommendations, Doyle’s report says the ALC is “awaiting direction from government.” The commission is seeking increased funding for several initiatives. The future foodgrowing productivity of the ALR continues to be damaged by illegal activity such as the dumping of construction material and tainted fill on farmland. Doyle previously found the ALC too often gives violators written or verbal warnings instead of issuing orders or fines because it can’t afford to defend tougher measures if they’re challenged in court. The Lower Mainland has lost eight per cent of its ALR land since the reserve was created in 1973.

been taken in the year since B.C.’s Auditor General red-flagged a series of big holes in the Agricultural Land Commission’s ability to protect farmland. Auditor General John Doyle’s original report in the fall of 2010 contained nine recommendations, some of them urging the ALC to fix inaccurate maps of Agricultural Land Reser ve boundaries and tighten enforcement against those who degrade farmland. The commission’s budget has been cut 30 per cent since 2002 and the audit had found the agency is underfunded and understaffed to carry out much of its duties. But in a new followup report, Doyle scolds the inaction over the past year. Nothing has been done with five recommendations and the rest are only partly implemented. “I am disappointed that the ALC has made negligible progress,” he said in the report.

Changes coming to B.C. schools Tom Fletcher Black Press VICTORIA – The B.C. government will provide more money for special-needs support in the province’s public schools, and provide new training for teachers, according to Premier Christy Clark’s first throne speech. Lieutenant-Governor Steven Point delivered the speech Monday to open a new session of the B.C. legislature. It confirms that the province’s “net zero” negotiation mandate for public sector union contracts will be imposed for the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, whose contract expired last June. The BCTF has been refusing non-essential duties since school started in September, and on Monday the B.C. Public School Employers Association met to consider reducing teacher pay or imposing a lockout in an effort to force a settlement. The BCTF is demanding wage parity with other provinces and a range of benefit improvements, as well as hundreds of millions of dollars to reduce class sizes and increase special-needs support staff. Education Minister George Abbott said the additional money for special needs support will be in the “tens of millions” over the next three years. Decreasing class sizes by one student across the province would cost $150 million, and research suggests that smaller classes are far down the list of things that improve education outcomes, he said. The speech promises “additional flexibility and choice” in educating students, adding that “these changes will be bold and represent a significant improvement in how, when and where education takes place.” NDP leader Adrian Dix said improvements to special needs support are only coming because of a B.C. Supreme Court decision earlier this year giving the government a year to consult on class size and composition limits taken out of teacher bargaining in 2002.

WIN

“The government that lost in court on its action on class size and composition is now say-

ing they may make some changes,” Dix said. “But in the year that we’re in, 12,000 classrooms are

Meet bad weather with good sense. It’s that time of year again. It’s getting dark early, it’s raining more often and foggy patches are here, there and sometimes everywhere. All of which negatively affect driving conditions. But paying attention to the changing weather and using a little seasonal road sense, helps prevent crashes and injuries that could negatively affect your auto insurance rates.

to an end. Setting clocks back one hour brings darkness earlier and makes it more difficult to see the pedestrians and cyclists who share the road with you. According to ICBC, this time change is known to be followed by an increase in the number of crashes and injuries on B.C. roads. So be safe and consider driving with headlights on, because many daytime running lights don’t automatically INSURANCE illuminate the tail lights. OUTLOOK

Practice safe driving in adverse weather and remember what to expect in the days ahead. Most will be too young and excited to think about road safety and the earlier onset of darkness. Though most children are accompanied by adults, kids are unpredictable, and it’s up to drivers to stay alert for any that may dart into traffic. Being aware of the impending weather and driving accordingly will enhance the safety of all road users during the change of seasons. A change of season may also mean a change in your auto insurance needs. Visit your local BCAA Sales Centre to ensure you are prepared with the right coverage for the coming months. Donna Wyant is a Sales Centre Assistant Sales Manager - Insurance at BCAA. She can be reached at donna.wyant@ bcaa.com.

Paula DeWit, along with 13 students, are all part of the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra's Piano Extravaganza on Oct. 8. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Piano is the key to musical extravaganza Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Organizers are not exaggerating when they describe their upcoming concert as a ‘Piano Extravaganza.’ The Oct. 8 event features Canadian pianist Ian Parker and more than a dozen local piano students at the Chilliwack Alliance Church, accompanied by the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The focus of the special concert will be on the musical marvel that is the beloved piano. They’ll be tickling the ivories on an impressive Steinway D — the largest F I N E

piano of its kind, courtesy of Glen Cuthbertson, who generously offered to loan it to the CSO. It’s the second time the CSO has tried something similar for local fans of piano music, says conductor Paula de Wit. The first half of the Saturday night program will feature 13 piano students of the B.C. Registered Music Teachers’ Association (BCRMTA), who earned the right to perform that night by auditioning for the CSO conductors. They were up against a total of 30 other young pianists. The second half of A Piano Extravaganza will feature Parker

playing the romantic and dramatic Liszt Piano Concerto as well as Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Liszt was the piano pop star of his day, and loved the drama of performance. Gershwin apparently wrote Rhapsody in Blue very quickly, trying to meet a deadline. “It’s so jazzy, and easy to listen to. It will be accessible to the audience because everyone has heard it,” de Wit said about Rhapsody. The CSO Chorus as well as Belle Voci A Cappella Singers will also be on stage singing. Born in Vancouver to a family of pianists, Parker began his piano

studies at age three with his father, Edward Parker. While at Juilliard, the Canada Council for the Arts awarded him the Sylva Gelber Career Grant, which is given annually to the “most talented Canadian artist.” Parker has appeared with the Buffalo Philharmonic, Calgary Philharmonic, Cincinnati Symphony, CBC Symphony Vancouver, and many more. “As a performer, he’s totally immersed in the music,” said conductor Clyde Mitchell. “He’s charismatic, easy-going and delightfully articulate,” said de Wit. “He has a great future ahead

of him.” The juxtaposition of a seasoned musician with several young players was not accidental. “They can learn a lot from Ian and they already have,” de Wit said. Parker worked with each piano soloist during a master class he offered on Oct. 1 in preparation for the concert. “It’s going to sound so good!” Piano Extravaganza with Ian Parker and BCRMTA students, Oct. 8, 7:30 p.m. tickets $30 Dress Circle, $25 Orchestra and $20 for general seating, at Chilliwack Christian Alliance Church.

Last Band Standing continues Who will be the Last Band Standing in Chilliwack? The elimination-style band competition resumes Thursday night, heading into its sixth week at Major Leagues 2, says event emcee Brittany Waslen. Local bands have been competing in earnest for the excellent prize of $1500 cash, a Long and McQuade credit, and some recording time. “It’s a really good way to get local bands featured and it’s free to the public,” said Waslen. The bands have been vying for the big prize by performing on the raised stage at Major Leagues 2 on Gaetz Street, and working the crowds leading up to Saturday’s final showdown. Weekly door prizes have been doled out to keep it extra interesting. The preliminary rounds were Sept. 8, Sept. 15 and 22. The semi finals continue on Oct. 6 and the final round of performances are on Oct. 8. The fun typically starts at 6:30 p.m. with live music from the house band, Manhole Cover. The finalists this week include three Chilliwack bands: The Leenie Bennett Band, Matt Lowen and 9:31, and they’ll be taking the stage after the hockey game at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, and then starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 8. Admission is free.

Alpha Yaya Diallo plays the Cultural Centre

Serving the Immigrant and Aboriginal clients of the Fraser Valley

DIALLO from p22 During the time he spent in neighbouring Senegal, Diallo picked up the popular and powerful rhythm known as mbalax — as well as influences from the Caribbean. By uniting the traditional and the contemporary, Diallo has carved a niche for himself on the same path as such luminaries as Salif Keita, Baaba Maal, and Youssou N’Dour. With five highly acclaimed albums, including Juno Award winners The Message and The Journey, it was a natural fit for him to take part in the hugely successful African Guitar Summit concert at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto with Pa Joe, Mighty Popo, Madagascar Slim, Adam Solomon, and DonnÊ Robert. Udy returns to where it all began Eric J. Welsh, The Progress As the Chilliwack Chiefs hit the road for two games this weekend, one player prepares for a homecoming of sorts. Goaltender Bryton Udy returns to Vernon Friday night, facing the team that gave him his start in the BCHL. Udy played seven games for the Vipers last year before being dealt to the Quesnel Millionaires. His experience with and against Vernon had Chiefs head coach Harvey Smyl hinting that he might be between the pipes when Chilliwack invades the Wesbild Centre. “Playing with Vernon, I found it to be a great barn to play in because they’ve got such knowledgeable and passionate fans,” Udy said. The Calgary native got his first start of the young season last weekend, getting the nod in a 6-4 win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Udy stopped 23 of 27 pucks in a wild affair featuring odd-man rushes aplenty and dismal defensive coverage. Udy was happy to be back in action after a tumultuous offseason. The 18-year-old was part of the roster shuffle from Quesnel to Chilliwack and found himself battling former teammate Adam Harris for a job at training camp. “We were really good buddies in Quesnel, but the dynamic definitely changed when we got to Chilliwack,” Udy said. “We’d hang out during the day, but once we got to the rink we were kind of enemies. It was a tough scenario knowing only one of us was probably going to have a job.” His birth certificate

(two years younger than Harris) gave Udy a big leg up in the competition. Harris didn’t get much opportunity to prove himself before Smyl cut the 19-year-old loose. “When he was let go, I was excited that I’d made the team, but it was also really tough to have a really good buddy leave the team and not know what’s going to happen for him,” Udy said. An outstanding outing in the final preseason game in Merritt almost gave Udy the opening night start against Penticton. Mitch Gillam got the eventual nod against the Vees, and Udy ended

up going two weeks bullets. between starts. “Especially for goalUdy looked remark- ies too where every shot ably sharp despite the means something,” Udy layoff, a testament to admitted. “It’s definitely the work he puts different, but in at practice. you’ve still got to “I try to stay bring that mindfocused and go set to the rink through pracevery day.” tices like I’m An optimistic playing a game,” guy by nature, he explained. “I Udy seems well try to prepare as suited to deal though I’m startwith the ebbs Bryton ing every game. and flows of goalEven if I don’t, I tending, never UDY want to be ready getting to high whenever they want me or to low. to play.” That wasn’t always Just about every the way. player will say the same “I don’t let things get thing. to me as much I did Just about every play- in bantam,” he said. “I er will also say there’s had to change my mindno substitute for live set, not sorry so much

about what was going into the net as what I was keeping out of it. Another thing that’s easy to say and difficult to do, even for veteran National Hockey League stoppers. “My goalie coaches helped me a lot with that, and it got to where, when I got scored on I’d do the exact same thing,” Udy said. “Take a squirt of water on my face, wash it off, take a skate to the corner and come back and I’m ready to go. Blank slate.” Udy had to do that four times against the Silverbacks in a game that was... difficult... for a goalie. He could hardly be

faulted on the goals that beat him, tick-tack-toe power play passes and top shelf wristers from 10 feet out. Smyl admitted as much after the game, saying Udy was “hung out to dry” on several Salmon Arm scoring opportunities. That’s the way it goes for a goalie sometimes, when he plays well and still ends up with a 4.00 goals-against average and .852 save percentage. “Personally, I felt a little shaky at the beginning, but by the second period I felt a lot better,” Udy noted. “I made one save at the end of the first and felt a lot more comfortable. We had

the lead and I just had to let in less goals than the other guy.” After Friday night’s game in Vernon, Udy and company will head on to Westside for a Saturday night game with the Warriors. If Udy has a favourite building in the BCHL, Royal LePage Place might be it. “Their fans get pretty rowdy and that gets me pumped. Even if they’re yelling at me, it’s more fun,” he said. “It’s just a lot more fun when the fans are vocal and into the game.” Udy and the Chiefs are back home Friday, Oct. 14 to host the Vipers. Puck drop is 7 p.m.

The school is holding a second annual Ford Test Drive Event on Saturday, Oct. 15. For each person that test drives a Ford vehi-

teams Abbotsford, Cloverdale, Burnaby, Por t Coquitlam, Semiahmoo and North Shore are joined by Island squads from Nanaimo and Victoria. Kamloops, Kelowna and Prince George represent the Interior along with the Pursuit of Excellence and the Okanagan Hockey Academy.

U-S visitors include Seattle and Wenatchee. This tournament is always heavily scouted by major junior and junior A teams. The local Chilliwack entry consists of 12 second year, and five first year players coached by Garnet Wendel, Sean Hannah and Miles MacRae. Chilliwack’s first

game is Friday at 2:45 p.m. versus Cloverdale (at Twin Rinks 2). Their second game is Saturday at 9:45 a.m. versus Pursuit of Excellence (at Prospera Red). Their third game is Saturday at 6 p.m. versus Nanaimo (at Twin Rinks 1). Get more at http:// cmha.goalline.ca/.

Chilliwack secondary school’s senior girls field hockey team travelled to Oliver last weekend for two days of tournament action, going 1-2-1 in four games. The locals were missing three regulars to injury on the second day and showed guts to battle through. CSS has one win and one tie in league play thus far. Kelsey McLean, Christina Vandenbrink and Nicole Bartel scored goals in a 3-2 win over North Delta last Thursday.

Chilliwack’s Voodoo Derby Dollz were thrilled to have Chilliwack firefighters operating a Beer Garden and Concession during their first roller derby bout, held last Saturday at the Landing Sports Centre. The firefighters worked very hard to feed and quench the thirst of hundreds of spectators. Their goal was to raise funds for the Chilliwack Firefighters Charitable Society, which in turn donates to a local charity in Chilliwack. The total raised was $1,000! As the month of October marks the launch of ‘Purple Light Nights,’ a campaign which honours victims of domestic violence, the Chilliwack Firefighters have donated all proceeds to Chilliwack’s Ann Davis Transition Society.

Lisa Hiemstra got the shutout with help from Jocelyn Hultman, Rebecca Bramley, Marnetta Felix, Trudy Hall, Jessica Malinowski and Helena Paul.

heights when the teams met in the BCHL finals four times in a five year span beginning in 1999. The teams split those series, with the Chiefs winning in 2000 and 2002 and the Vipers being crowned champions in 1999 and 2003. It may take a bit for this rivalry to heat up again but I have no doubt that it will. It’s likely the fan bases of both teams will fuel the fire. There are many fans in both cities who remember the early 90’s when the Chiefs with Joey Potskin and Marc Gagnon, and the Lakers with Scott Longstaff and Dusty McClellan would entertain us with games that ended with scores like 9-8 and 10-7. Fans a little younger will remember the four final series and watching players like Jeremy Jackson, Jeff Tambellini and Gabe Gauthier leading the Chiefs to two final series wins over the Vipers. During the last five seasons, while the Chiefs were absent from Chilliwack, the Vipers were the class of the BCHL. They’ve won the last three league championships and claimed national championships in 2009 and 2010. The Vipers are also the Chiefs next home opponent on Oct. 14. Both teams have great fan support and many of these fans will remember the days when a Chilliwack versus Vernon game was a must see event. I think it still is. jb@chilliwackchiefs.net

What was once one of the best rivalries in junior hockey will be rekindled Friday night in Vernon. While it may have never reached the heights of rivalries like Boston Red Sox versus New York Yankees, Montreal Canadiens versus Toronto Maple Leafs, Ginger versus Maryanne or Rosie O’Donnell vs Donald Trump, the Chilliwack Chiefs versus the Vernon Lakers/Vipers was once one of the best rivalries in junior hockey. It goes back to 1990 when the Richmond Sockeyes moved to Chilliwack to become the Chiefs. Chiefs spent their first four seasons in the Interior Division with Vernon who were then known as the Lakers. During those four years the two teams faced off against each other 40 times during the regular season with the Chiefs winning 16 of those 40 games. They also met twice in the playoffs, in 1991 and 1992, with the Lakers winning both of those second round series in six games. Keep in mind back then the games in both cities were played in small arenas where the fans were right on top of the players. If you were there, you know how special it was. The Chiefs then moved out of the Interior conference and the teams met just two or three times during the regular season from that point on. Despite that the rivalry hit new

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 8th, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 45901 Victoria Avenue, Chilliwack, BC.

(Art) Dec. 6, 1919-Sept. 30, 2011 Art passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 91, just 34 days shy of his 65th wedding an- CANTLON niversary, after a hard and courageous battle with cancer. The third child of Theodore and Flossie Cantlon, he was predeceased by his brothers Ev and Alvin. He is survived by his beloved wife Pat, son Jim (Carol), sisters Aimee (Harold) and Dorothy, brothers Darrel( Jessie) and Lynn, grandsons Seth (Christy) and Brad (Mandy), granddaughter Angie (Kevin), great-grandsons, Jake, Max, Cody and Ryder, and great-granddaughters Lexi, Mya and Taite. In 1941 Art enlisted in the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps and served in the European theatre for the duration of WWII, rising to the rank of Armament Staff Sergeant. He was decorated with the 193945 Star: Italy Star; France and Germany Star; Defence Medal; Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp; War Medal 1939-45; The Canadian Forces’ Decoration and Clasp. Upon his return from the war he met Pat Wallace and they soon married and embarked on a long, adventurous and loving journey together. Art got his Electrician’s papers and started working as an electrician, but soon reenlisted in the Army and served in the RCEME Corps until retiring with the rank of Major in June 1969. Upon leaving the army Art put his skills into practice in the forest industry, working as a vehicle and mill maintenance superintendent in Houston, B.C., then Goose Bay, Labrador, and finally in Liberia, West Africa. He left Liberia in the middle of a revolution and said he was retiring. He then started Dart Services and undertook the rather large project of renovating the old Chilliwack Community Arts Centre. Art was passionate about the outdoors and loved hunting, fishing and river running. Art was an avid curler and loved participating in helping the community. He has been a long term member of the Legion and the Elks and became a Mason shortly after he moved to Chilliwack. Art served as Worshipful Master of the Mt. Zion Lodge #120 from 2004 to 2005. He will be missed for many reasons, not the least of which are his many stories, sense of humour, and his song writing and singing. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Chilliwack General Hospital, 45600 Menholm Road, Chilliwack V2P 1P7 where he was given much care and compassion, would be appreciated. Special thanks to those who visited Art and brightened his days. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 16th at 1:00 pm at the Mason’s Lodge, 45905 Hocking Ave., Chilliwack.
