Familiar face back on local streets Robert Freeman The Progress It’s not necessarily bad news when former IHIT spokesman Sgt. Dale Carr shows up in your neighbourhood. The Chilliwack home-boy is returning to frontline policing duties after five grueling years as the media’s go-to guy at the RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. Carr agreed to an interview, not to get his name in the newspaper, he says, but to put people who might recognize him at ease. “It’s a way to tell them, if they see me, it’s not necessarily bad. It doesn’t mean somebody’s been murdered.” Carr’s face became a familiar sight on TV news reports as gangland slayings in the Lower Mainland hit epidemic proportions in the last couple of years, and he won the respect of reporters everywhere for his availability and his understanding of their deadlines and the kind of information they needed. It’s the kind of 24/7 work that can leave you burned-out and cynical - but Carr maintains an easy sense of humour, perhaps because of his small town roots. “I grew up in Chilliwack,” he says, except for a brief stay in nearby Rosedale, and he even delivered The Progress to 180 customers on Fairfield Island. ‘Building year’ for Yarrow elementary Katie Bartel The Progress When Yarrow elementary students arrive at school this morning, they’ll be guided down a paved path along the outer skirts of the school’s property until they reach the side door located on the northwest corner of the building; the school’s temporary entrance. Along the route, they’ll no doubt catch a glimpse of the new school being built adjacent to the old one. Yarrow elementary is in its final stages of construction. Even though it still has portions of the new school gaping open, the front entrance not yet built up, and the multi-purpose wing still not much more than a shell, it’s not hard to visualize what the school will soon be. “It’s not going to be just another structure,” said Garnet Schneider, project manager with Yellowridge Construction Ltd., which was awarded the designbuild projects for both Yarrow and Rosedale. “It’s going to have

pizazz and design, and a great exterior street appeal. It won’t be boring.” The new school, which is being constructed on a site 10 feet higher than the old school to elevate it from the floodplain, will occupy 42,637 square feet, which includes 4,962 square feet of community learning space – a total increase of more than 7,000 square feet from the old school’s

exiting into the large open courtyard at the centre of the school. The northwest wing will feature a multipurpose space with commercial-sized garage doors opening up into the courtyard. There will also be partitioning doors on the inside, separating the multipurpose room from the drama facility. The wing will also include a 6,383 square foot gymnasium, with change rooms accessible from both the inside and outside. “The change rooms will be accessible from the outside so the community can use them, but access into the school [from the change rooms] will be locked,” said Schneider. The centre wing is where the front entrance will be located, as well as administrative, support staff and community offices. The building is being constructed using concrete, steel, glue-laminated timber beams, and wood framing. Wood accents will also be implemented throughout the school aesthetically. Locals lead rally for wild salmon outside hearing Jennifer Feinberg The Progress A rally to protect wild salmon on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery last week included a contingent from Chilliwack. Squaw elder Eddie Gardner organized the peaceful gathering of “wild salmon warriors” to help push for a province-wide moratorium on open-net salmon farms in the ocean. “It is hard to believe the lengths they will go to allow business to continue as usual,” he said. “We have to fill the courtroom full of people on Sept. 7 and 8 to ensure the truth gets out.” Along with traditional drumming and singing, a Wild Salmon
Dance was performed by Josette Jim and a hoop dance by Gary Abbott of Chilliwack, there was also a symbolic clay salmon shattered on the steps to represent the fate of wild stocks if fish farm stocks pass on deadly diseases to wild salmon stocks. Gardner said anyone concerned about the future of wild salmon is urged to write letters to newspapers and politicians, or attend the Cohen Commission hearings, on West Georgia Street in Vancouver after the long weekend. He wrote his own letter to B.C. premier Christy Clark last week, asking for her support of wild salmon with a fish-farm clampdown to prevent a “catastrophe” on her watch.
“By supporting a moratorium on licensing open-net fish farms on the oceans, you would take leadership in protecting the wild salmon industry that provides many jobs to British Columbians and is a very vibrant part of the B.C. economy,” Gardner wrote. “It would also mean you would ensure continued support to aboriginal people’s right to fish for salmon that has sustained us since time immemorial.” Biologist and whale researcher Alexandra Morton told supporters she was thrilled to hear the sound of “wild salmon” songs and drums coming from the rally in the streets below on Tuesday, as Cohen Commission hearings into aquaculture continued. The aquaculture hearings began
on Aug. 25 to look into the possible link between open-net fish farms in the migratory path of salmon, and the sockeye salmon crash of 2009. Morton is pressing the government to hold off on any licensing of new fish farms in the ocean while the federal Cohen Commission is still underway. The concerted effort “to cover up the marine anemia outbreak that occurred on salmon farms in the Fraser sockeye migratory corridor” is extraordinary, she said. “Today we hit a low. Honour and truth abandoned. It is a struggle to remain hopeful,” wrote Morton on her blog yesterday, at http://alexandramorton.typepad.com. She writes that “marine anemia” has been called everything from
a virus, a syndrome, to a leading candidate cause of the death of millions of Fraser sockeye. “If DFO succeeds in disassembling Dr. Kristi Miller’s lab, the truth about this disease, its impact on sockeye and the concern voiced in the 1990s regarding its potential for health concerns will never be revealed,” Morton said. “If these vets want to tell us all the research done on marine anemia, also called Plasmacytoid Leukemia was wrong, they are going to have to retract the papers they wrote in journals such as Cancer Research, Diseases of Aquatic Organisms, The Canadian Veterinary Journal, the Journal of General Virology and Dr. Stephen’s PhD Thesis.”

Vedder Crossing borrowed its name from an early settler who bought land in the area in the 1870s. Volkert Vedder owned tracts of land near where the Vedder Bridge is now, at the point where the Chilliwack River turns into the Vedder River. That’s the kind of fun factoid found on the new interactive program, TrailTalker, created for visitors of the wellused Vedder Rotary Trail in Chilliwack. With a whopping 15,000
users hit the trail every month, and many will be eager to learn more about it, says Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “The interest will be there because of the sheer magnitude of the number of people using that trail,” she said. “That’s where they do their hiking, running and dog-walking.” The website TrailTalker. com is like an audio tour guide, pointing out points of interest, and is the result of recent trail enhancements made by the City of Chilliwack and the Rotar y Club of Chilliwack. TrailTalkers provides a high-tech tool “to enjoy,
appreciate and learn about the natural world” surrounding the riverside trail. Voiced by the effervescent Scott Riley of Star-FM fame, the TrailTalker vignettes are downloaded as MP3s from a Smartphone, iPod or MP3 at the trailhead. “Chilliwack is especially proud of its trails and parks system,” Mayor Sharon Gaetz said. Riley’s familiar voice can be heard describing landmarks like the Vedder bridge, the river, the canal, flood history, salmon fishing, beavers, and the nearby Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve. “It’s a good first step,” said
Gaetz. The next step is developing a QR code that will take users straight to the website. “We have the technology, so why not use it? Teachers or students who’d like a printout to use as an educational tool or for personal interest, can click on ‘Educational Resources’ to do so. “I think it’s remarkable,” Gaetz added. “Also they will keep it fresh by updating it every once in a while.”
Slow down. Summer vacation is coming to an end, which means back-to-school for Chilliwack students. As students head back to school on Tuesday, Chilliwack’s Safer City program is reminding motorists that school zones are in effect. This means that from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the speed limit in school zones is 30 kilometres per hour. “Everyone needs to slow down and pay special attention when in a school zone,” said Chilliwack RCMP Cpl. Daryl Dalby. “Even if it looks like there are no children on the sidewalks, they can jump out from between parked vehicles or from where you don’t expect them.” Chilliwack RCMP will be focusing extra attention on school zones this fall. Speed Watch volunteers will be working in conjunction with the RCMP this fall to monitor and enforce driver behaviour in school zones. A motorist speeding within a school zone could face a minimum fine of $196 to a maximum of $483, as well as a penalty of three to six points on their record. They could also have their vehicle impounded for seven days. Pedestrian safety is both the driver and pedestrian’s responsibility. But because children’s physical and mental capacities are still developing well into their teens, they are often unable to make safe judgments about pedestrian safety. Parents are reminded to talk with their children about what to do before crossing the road, and to teach them to use their eyes and ears, and to always ‘stop, think, look and listen,’ even if there is a crossing guard or traffic signal. The Chilliwack Safer City program is a partnership between the City of Chilliwack, Chilliwack RCMP and ICBC.

Dale Carr returns to his Chilliwack roots

ROOTS from Front “I lived off Young Street at Fifth Avenue, and I had to cycle all the way to Fairfield Island to deliver my papers,” he recalls. “I hated those thick newspaper days,” he adds, when The Progress was so full of advertising flyers he could hardly keep his bike on the road. Carr also worked at Chilliwack’s first McDonald’s restaurant on Luckakuck Way. “They had such a regimented work ethic, I think it rubbed off on me and that’s where I developed the work ethic I have today,” he says. But Carr found his true calling when he went for a ride-along with an RCMP officer as part of a highschool law class. “I went with an officer named Colin Abel, and I remember the whole evening,” he says. “I knew after that ride-along that this is what I had to do.” Carr graduated in 1980, and in his yearbook he’s quoted saying he wanted to join the RCMP. “I managed to tick that

box off,” he says, pride showing through his modesty. “Not many people actually get to complete what they wanted to complete in highschool.” But Carr had a “Plan B” in mind, in case the Mountie thing failed: radio broadcasting. “I used to spend hours ‘On Air’ at a radio station I set up at home,” he says. “It was fun, kind of silly,” he adds - but it also helped develop his comfort-zone in front of reporters’ cameras and microphones. An experience in 1992 that Carr still remembers with Ted Field, a former CKNW reporter now working at Global. “The key to communications is not just talking, but listening,” Carr says. “If you listen to the questions, and you understand the media ...” “I’m not talking to you (as a reporter) just because I want to talk to you, or because I want my name in the newspaper,” he explains. “I want a message out there.” “If I give you the right information, my message is going to get out there and not your message, the writer’s message.” “I don’t want to say ‘use the media,’” he adds, “but take the best advantage of the opportunity when the media comes calling.” But after five years of being constantly on call to reporters hungry for news, Carr says it was time for a change. “I wanted to stay (at IHIT), but it was time to move on ... to get a sense of your own life back.” Carr has two grown daughters, one of them a registered nurse and the other in the RCMP. It will also feature geothermal heating. Right now, however, the work continues. While students are in their classes, approximately 50 to 60 workers will be on the job regularly from Monday to Friday, some Saturdays, moving lumber, framing classrooms, erecting walls, finishing the roof,
painting walls. A blue fence is in place to separate the students from the men in hard hats. “We want to keep the kids out of the construction area and the workers out of the kids’ area,” said Schneider. Students are expected to move in to the new school some time in the new year.

Before taking the B.C. Teachers’ Federation to task for its stratospheric contract demands, the following should be acknowledged. The value and importance of teachers is indisputable. The great majority are passionate educators, dedicated to turning out well-balanced young people ready to face the challenges before them. Now enter the BCTF bargaining position, and reality rapidly fades. Among the demands currently on the table are wage increases – undefined as yet, but ostensibly on par with the highest paid teachers in the country, which could translate into as much as 20 per cent salary hikes. Add to that more benefits, including doubling the provision for bereavement leave to 10 days on the death of any friend or relative, and 26 weeks off each year as a fully paid leave to provide compassionate care to any person. The government has said the demands would amount to an additional $2.2 billion each year. In 2006, teachers endorsed a five-year agreement, which included a rich 16 per cent wage hike. Things were much different then. The global economy hadn’t tanked. It was three years before the B.C. government imposed a zero wage increase mandate on the public service. The province wasn’t running a $45-billion debt. It wasn’t trying to balance the budget after a string of deficits. And taxpayers hadn’t just voted down the HST, incurring a return to the PST that will see a $1.6-billion repayment to Ottawa, and some $3 billion in additional revenue lost in the next few years. In short, this province is in no fiscal position to entertain the BCTF’s fantasies. That’s the real world, and it’s time the BCTF lived in it. Address the issue that impacts students the most – classroom size and composition. That might even garner public support. ~ Black Press

Our children will pay for PST/HST fiasco Love or hate the outcome, the referendum on the HST saw democracy in action. British Columbians answered the question about extinguishing the tax with a majority in favour of scrapping it. However Chilliwack residents, recognizing its economic benefits, voted to keep it. “British Columbians have made their choice and we will honour that decision,” said Minister of Finance Kevin Falcon. “Now, more than ever, government must provide British Columbians economic stability and focus our attention toward growing our economy to create jobs.” No doubt. As this mess gets straightened out, there’s going to be winners and losers but there could be some second-guessing on the merits of the Yes vote. “You watch, a month from now the majority will shift to proHST when they look at what they

voted for,” said MLA John Les who was clearly disappointed in the outcome. “I don’t know that it affects us at the municipal level,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “Some businesses are really happy such as hairdressers and restaurants. Legislation has to be introduced at both the provincial and the federal levels and an entire bureaucracy will have to be re-tooled to staff and administer the PST for registration of businesses, audits, appeals, rul-
ings, provincial tax information phone lines, billings, remittances, collections and refunds. It’s not going to be cheap and it’s in addition to the repayment of $1.6 billion to the feds. All that Yes jubilation could be short-lived. As the PST gets uncoupled from the GST, the move could ultimately be a job killer. The ‘Yes’ voters might think it’s great for the little guy but when businesses have to start coping with the economic, timeconsuming burden of the old system and decide to cut expenses, it could be the little guy who’s first on deck for lay off. Industry executives will weigh future options with an eye on provinces that offer better tax breaks and accounting. Ontario will happily pick up the pieces. Our loss is their gain. They’ll be laughing all the way to the bank. Their HST system came
into place the same time ours did. They took it in stride and now have the economic edge to attract business at a critically vulnerable economic time. “When we joined those discussions on the HST with the federal government they were already in discussions with Ontario,” said MLA John Les. “They had been talking since March 2009 to go ahead. We joined in that discussion several months later. Now, arguably going back will be more difficult than implementing it in the first place. Our government wants this to happen as soon as possible. Every day that goes by is one of uncertainty.” What is certain though is that this vote was about politics, not policy. “People didn’t trust the way it was brought in,” said Gaetz. “It’s not acceptable to make a promise and not keep it. The Liberal mes-

saging was not adequate.” But Gaetz sees one possible opportunity. “I am pleased that people are demanding an accountability. Governments in the future will be more careful about the things they say and promise. There were many reasons why people made their choices other than economics.” The Yes vote was a painful blow for the Liberals but we could all feel that sting in the long run. Doing a PST U-turn threatens the growth of our future economy. As for the $1.6 billion going back to Ottawa, it will be tacked onto the province’s debt. Who’s paying? Our children. That’s not the legacy the HST supporters had in mind.

Government spends our tax money as if we were not providing military training in Afghanistan, we were not helping Libya with their regime change, and we were not planning to help out Syria and Iran. There is plenty of tax revenue to serve BC and Canada. We are lacking prudent financial managers. The failure of BC voters to accept the HST is the message that directs our elected public servants to quit whining, and help us build a bright future with the money we have already given. The Progress editorial of Aug. 30, much like the comments coming from Chilliwack’s MLA’s, tends to blame BC voters for the painful financial mess the province has found itself. I blame the mess on those who mismanaged our tax money, and I believe that our politicians are missing the message sent by the destruction of BC’s HST. People are taxed enough already. It doesn’t matter if it appears as a tax on something we believe to be bad for us (cigarettes and alcohol) or something that will cure the dying planet (the dreaded carbon footprint), or if it appears as a fee for buying and using auto tires or an electrical product. Politicians are masters of hiding tax increases and creating new taxes for inno-

Health system showing signs of strain ment for the results. I was told that the results were not in yet. I called again in a few days and set up an appointment. I had to wait three weeks to get the appointment, but I did not mind because my doctor is worth the wait. I kept the appointment only to find out that my results had not been received. I was annoyed to say the least; it is not my doctor’s fault. I went home and emailed the Fraser Health Authority compliments and complaints department. I explained my situation
via email and got back an answer the same day stating that they could deal with my problem more efficiently if I called them. I called and, you guessed it: “Please leave a message after the beep.” I did get a call back in just a few minutes, probably because I sounded annoyed on the phone. The person I spoke to asked me if I wanted them to track down the results. I said that would be nice, but I really wanted to know why it was taking so long. She said she would look into it for me but that she did have 30
business days to deal with the problem. Okay, now I am laughing – good grief. My next question is who do I sue if this turns out to be something serious? Evidently I am not the only person whose results are missing and there are people a lot worse off than I am. Our system is in trouble. Stop giving the fat cats at BC Ferries and BC Hydro so much money. Put more money into our medical and education system, after all, these are people that take care of our families and teach our children. Patricia Furness

Rosedale, a walk down memory lane Katie Bartel The Progress When principal Todd McLean, a relative newcomer to the Rosedale school community, asked his kindergarten teacher how long he’d been at the elementary school, the teacher replied: Since 1959. McLean looked at him shocked. That can’t be right, he said, Elvis was still king. Garry Penner’s eyes twinkled at the reaction. He loves telling his story. Penner started teaching kindergarten at Rosedale elementary in 1989, but first came to the school in 1959 as a Grade 1 student. Back then, the single-floored building was still just a section of what it is now; the double stairwell in the two-storey block was segregated boys on the left, girls on the right, as was the basement play area. There was no gymnasium, physical education was done in classrooms, and the library located on the top floor was just a cubby hole of a space. “It’s so neat having been a child that went to school here and now teaching here,” Penner says, as he points himself out in the black-and-white class photos hanging at the end of the hallway. “Some of the kids I had in my first years were children of children I
went to school with. “I’ve always enjoyed it here.” He’s not the only one. Several of the school’s parents, grandparents, teachers and support staff had at one point been students in the Rosedale classrooms themselves. And many had returned in a volunteering capacity, supervising lunch hours, monitoring hallways, manning bake sales, helping with school carnivals. For McLean, who had only ever worked at middle and high schools prior to coming to Rosedale, it was as though he’d been dropped into a scene from Pleasantville. “There’s a feeling you get here that you don’t capture anywhere else,” he says. “Some things are just so simple here ... I can see why people would want to put a bubble around this place and never have it change.” But it is changing. On Jan. 3, both Rosedale elementary and Rosedale middle will be moving into a new kindergarten to Grade 9 school on the middle school site.
(The school district had initially planned for an integrated move-in with the middle school kids moving in earlier in November and the elementary kids in January. But because of work delays, they’ll both be moved in at the same time, the district decided last week.) Rosedale middle, which was built in 1961, will be demolished, as will the two-storey facility on the elementary site built in 1914 due to seismic issues. The elementar y school’s one-floored building will remain, but no plans have yet been determined for it. Both schools are hosting a final walkthrough celebration; Rosedale elementary on Oct. 15 and Rosedale middle on Nov. 2. “We want to honour the history of these schools,” says McLean. The history at Rosedale elementary could fill a museum. Its first one-room schoolhouse was opened in 1890 on the corner of McGrath Road and Yale Road. That school was moved across the road when a larger two-room schoolhouse was built in 1905. In 1914, a
four-room, two-storey facility was built on McGrath Road north to accommodate the growing community – that facility is still in place today. “This school has spanned three generations,” says McLean. “Can you imagine that? We’ve had three generations of kids walking these hallways. That’s approximately 11-12,000 students through here. “This school is the ultimate history of Chilliwack in so many ways.” Inside the buildings, original shelving, coat hooks, and cubby holes are still in place; old typewriters, phonographs, and IBM Selectrics can be found; and inside Penner’s classroom are the same wooden tables and chairs he sat on back in 1959. “Over the years I’ve had principals encourage me to accept newer plastic chairs,” says Penner, who wasn’t interested. The wooden chairs, he says, will be coming to the new school as well. Former student Jennifer Denham attended Rosedale elementary and Rosedale middle from 1982-1992. At the elementary school, she remembers playing dress-up on rainy days in Mrs. Walter’s classroom, skating on an iced-over puddle between the two buildings every winter, and playing hide and seek between a row of trees on the north Continued: HISTORY/ p14

ing about time capsules, and old teachers, and first loves, and about the centennial celebration in 1990, and watching Iraq war updates on the TV in the hall in 1991, and one class switching with another for five weeks because a teacher had broken his leg and the other teachers didn’t want him to have to suffer the stairs every day. Former teacher Mabel Walter, who spent 13 years at Rosedale elementary, never taught another school with the same community feel. “There’s a sense of community here that does not exist at other schools,” says Walter. “I didn’t teach a classroom, I taught a community. I never experienced that anywhere else.” The school’s history will not disappear with the school. The memories, the class photos, the yearbooks, the time capsule will all be transferred over to the new building. “The history makes the school,” says McLean. Chiefs D-man juggles pucks and plates
Training camp has begun for the Chilliwack Chiefs, with a whole new group of players ready to represent this city in its return to the BCHL. To help you get to know your new team, the Progress sports section will be running several player features from now until the start of the regular season. The crash course continues today with a third year defenceman who seems poised to become a team leader.

Welsh, The Progress When things start to get crazy in the Chilliwack Chiefs zone this season, when the opponents bring everything they’ve got in search of the game tying goal, there is one man on the blueline who should be well suited to deal with the frenetic pace. After all, what’s a frantic 60 second shift in a junior A game when compared to a six hour dinner rush at Olive Garden? Why should Stefan Gonzales panic in the face of an oncoming forechecker? Can it be any worse than having a tour bus drop off 25 famished tourists who want food and want it now? “It depends on if things are going well or not, and that depends on who’s working,” Gonzales said. “If we have weaker people working, then mistakes happen, we get behind and there’s no recovering.” In hockey, limited players play limited minutes to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. In the kitchen, there’s nowhere to hide, and in both occupations errors can be disastrous. “It’s a team environ-
ment, and if one person’s not doing their job, everyone suffers for it,” Gonzales said. “It’s high stress at all times, every shift. It’s not easy, but I like the challenge.” There are a surprising number of parallels that he can draw between working at Olive Garden and skating in the BCHL. After a summer promotion, he now runs the line, making sure everyone else is doing what they’re supposed to be doing. Entering his third BCHL season At 19 years old, Gonzales is one of the most experience Chiefs, a veteran shepherding the younger players. Both jobs involve a lot of communication. In the busy kitchen, Gonzales often has to yell to be heard. In an arena filled with 1,500+ boisterous fans, he can’t be afraid to raise his voice. “I’m a pretty good yeller, which is why I got promoted,” he laughed. “I have to yell to get the food out on time, because if I don’t, then I’m going to get yelled at.” Everyone in sports says communication is important, but it seems to be one of the hardest things to do. “I try to communicate a lot on the ice, because it makes it so much easier letting teammates know where you are and where you want them to be,” Gonzales explained. “When guys aren’t talking, it usually has to do with their comfort level and their confidence in what they’re doing. Going back to work, even when you’re not in control you have to act like you’re in control, and the people around you have to believe you have the answers.” The son of a German mother from Iserlohn and a Filipino father from Quezon City, Gonzales grew up in Surrey. He played his upper level minor hockey with the North Shore Winter Club, and started his BCHL career in 2008-09, playing one game with

the Westside Warriors. In 2009-10 he jumped to the Burnaby Express, earning three assists and 47 penalty minutes in 54 games. He had one goal, nine points and 51 penalty minutes in Quesnel last season, and admits to having a tough time with the move to northern B.C. “It was my first winter off the coast, and the temperature in the arena was the same as it was outside the arena,” Gonzales grimaced. “If it was -30 outside, it was -30 inside, which was real overwhelming at first. I learned quickly that layers are important.” The on-ice situation didn’t help, with the Mills lurching to a 13-38-3-6 record. Gonzales insisted the team was better than the record showed, with several of their losses coming by just one goal. “We just couldn’t finish games,” he lamented. The core of the new Chiefs will be the old
Mills, and Gonzales said the only direction for them to go is up. “We have guys who have spent a year in this league, and you can’t replace that experience,” he said. “Once our season started to go down hill last year, the coaches started to distribute ice time more evenly, so a lot of first year guys got a lot of time they wouldn’t normally get. It takes some guys half a season to get into that junior A mentality, where all us guys from Quesnel have it already.” Gonzales knows the expectations in Chilliwack are vastly different from those in Quesnel. Winners are expected here, in a market used to junior A success and soured from five years of mediocre WHL hockey. “My first phone call with Harvey (Chiefs head coach and GM Smyl) he said we are making the playoffs this year,” Gonzales said. “Right away, that set the tone. This isn’t
a rebuilding year and we’re not taking a step backward. There is an expectation that we will perform.” Smyl has never missed the playoffs in his coaching career, and Gonzales doesn’t want to be part of the team that breaks that impressive run. On a personal level, he can’t wait to be part of a winning organization. “I’m tired of losing. My entire minor hockey career I played on winning teams, but I’ve been in this league for two years and I haven’t played in a playoff game,” he said. “That’s why you play at the high level, because you want to win and compete. Losing sucks.” The Chiefs play their next home preseason game Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. versus the visiting Surrey Eagles. The home opener is Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. versus the Penticton Vees. BCHL grad skating in Young Stars tourney
For the second straight year, Penticton’s South Okanagan Events Centre hosts some of the finest young talent the National Hockey League has to offer at the 2011 Young Stars tournament. And this year, the Vancouver Canucks roster will have some BCHL flavour with Karel St-Laurent, who was the go-to guy in net for the Surrey Eagles last season. The six-foot-four and 195 pound goaltender, a Quebec native, impressed at Vancouver’s summer prospects camp, using his size effectively.

There are three major hills adding up to a gut wrenching 1,110 metres in elevation gain (3,641 feet). The toughest of the hills is the last, rising 440 metres. Four aid-stations are strategically placed throughout the course. These stations support the no-frills atmosphere of the race, allowing the runners to remain unburdened. All aidstations are manned by capable volunteers ready to give food, drink or medical support to the runners. A few years ago the 16km-14km relay was added to the race and it has proven popular with those runners not interested in the longer solo 30 km, and those runners still working though the development phase. Race director, Heather Hibberson said the most prominent refinement this year is in the area of timing. “Utilizing Champion Chip Timing provided by Race Headquarters will guarantee very accurate split times and finals times,” she explained. Forty percent of last year’s entrants were from Chilliwack, with the local runner support matched by the sponsorship generosity of local businesses. Numerous prizes have donated and race proceeds are donated to the following community groups: Chilliwack Search and Rescue, the Chilliwack Track and Field Club and the Vedder Mountain Trail Association. Edward Janovick passed away peacefully at Mission Memorial Hospital on Aug. 18. A Gathering of Friends will be held on Sun. Sept. 18 from 12:30 - 3:30 at his farmhouse at 1331 Janovick Road, Columbia Valley.
Mar. 5, 1930 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Aug. 25, 2011 Paul passed away peacefully at Cascade Lodge in Chilliwack. He was the youngest son of Wil- LAVASSEUR lie and Dora Levasseur. Paul is survived by his sister Jean and brother Gerry. He will be forever remembered by his children Tom (Marg), Marilyn (Albert) Mitchell, Ray (Cynthia), Nancy Finnigan, Laura (Chris) Wetaski, 15 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren, and his good friend Dave Rank. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Rosemarie, and his son Dennis. Paul was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan and moved to the west coast as a teenager. While living in New Westminster, Paul worked two jobs as he raised his young family. He drove a truck parttime for Commercial Trucking Co. while he pursued a career at the American Can Company in Vancouver. Not only did he become a mechanic at American Can Co. but he also took an active part in union business. He negotiated several contracts as president of the Steelworkers Union. He brought a tenacious spirit to the negotiating table and was extremely proud of the improved beneďŹ ts and wages he won for his fellow coworkers. He spent his last few years at

Mar. 7, 1949 - Aug. 24, 2011 After many years of health issues, Helen has passed away. She underwent major surgery but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t recover. She was tired. Helen is survived by son Kevin Chapman (Dana), daughter Jennifer Dupuis (Jesse); grandsons King and Austin. Her grandsons brought her much joy. Helenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s siblings Andy (Al), Debbie (Ron), Marg, Maggi, and Jeff (Debbi); many nieces and nephews; family in the Netherlands; and her childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father Garrett. She was predeceased by Mom, Dad and infant son Benjamin. Thanks to Carelife Fleetwood for their care and understanding. Though she had a tough road, she was still able to laugh with family. A private family gathering is planned. We will miss you and love you forever Helen.

Paul and Rose loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Florida, Belize, Hawaii and Costa Rica, but what they enjoyed most was the snowbird life of living in Oliver, BC, during the summer and then hitching up the 5th wheel to join their many friends at their winter home in Yuma, Arizona. They eventually settled in Chilliwack in 2007 but sadly they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get to enjoy the good life together as illness beset both of them. Paul struggled with Dementia and Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and called Cascade Lodge home where he was cared for by many people, his guardian angels. The family will be forever indebted to the nurses and Dr. Fitzpatrick for the love and respect they showed him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Paulyâ&#x20AC;? was at a good place but he is now free to join Rose in a better place. Nov. 22, 1939-Aug. 21, 2011 On August 21st, Bill Turner ďŹ nally lost his four year battle with cancer at Cascade Hospice. His family TURNER was by his side. He is survived by wife Pat, sister Carol, daughter Rose (Guido), daughters Morgan and Jasmine, his son Will and daughter Olivia. Bill was born in Shanghai, and from 1943-45 the family was interned by the Japanese. After WWII the family lived in Victoria where Bill grew up. He served in the RCAF as a radar technician and worked in this ďŹ eld before joining BC Tel and settling in Chilliwack. Bill was a keen long range riďŹ&#x201A;e shooter, shooting for Manitoba and Nova Scotia while in the RCAF and for B.C. from

In spite of losing the sight in one eye he made the 1999 Canadian National Team to Bisley U.K. More important to him though, were the many Army and Air Cadets he taught to shoot while RiďŹ&#x201A;e Instructor with 147 AirWolf Squadron in Chilliwack. His ranges were run with strict military discipline and safety was always paramount. In addition he was an authority on the complexities and ďŹ ne points of reloading ammunition, always ready to help others learn this demanding skill. His family will miss his dry wit, his affection and concern, and his ability to ďŹ x items that other people gave up as useless. Thanks to Dr. Oostenbrink, Dr. Bull and the staff at the Cascade Hospice and Dr. ZulďŹ qar and the staff at the Abbotsford Cancer Centre. As he wished, there will be no formal funeral service, but a Celebration of Life will be arranged at a later date.
