Penner takes early exit to join law firm Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner is resigning his seat in the B.C. legislature effective in January to take a position with a Vancouver law firm. In his goodbye speech from Victoria on Thursday, Penner was effusive with gratitude. “It has been a tremendous honour to serve the people of my hometown and beyond for more than 15 years in elected office and to receive their votes of confidence in four successive election campaigns,” he said. Penner initially resigned from cabinet in August as B.C. attorney general, saying he would not seek re-election as MLA. He was the youngest politician to be elected when he was first ran and won as MLA in 1996. Penner went on to hold the Environment portfolio from 2005 to 2010, as well as being picked as the first Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation. Asked what he’d miss most, Penner told The Progress: “There are many things I’ll miss. Working with so many different people on different issues, it’s been all-encompassing and mentally stimulating. “It’s particularly rewarding when you’re able to resolve issues for people.” In terms of accomplishments, Penner listed the cable-wire barrier on Highway 1 and the new courthouse which opened in 2001 in downtown Chilliwack. “Chilliwack has led the way with the cable barrier on the highway,” he said. “Some may think it’s a small thing, but it has saved lives and that is something I’m proud about.” The other major thing was the statue for Piper Richardson and the repatriation of his lost bagpipes back to B.C., which he worked on with MLA John Les. The pipes are now proudly on display in the rotunda of the legislature in Victoria. “Richardson died trying to find his pipes,” he said. “So it’s significant that we were able to repatriate them and now display where many can see them.” He also pointed to the construction of the first roundabout on a provincial highway on Highway Continued: PENNER/ p4

Bill McIntosh was upset and surprised to find Cheam Golf Centre had closed less than one week after he purchased a 2012 membership for more than $500. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Cheam Golf members fume after closure Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Cheam Golf Centre was locked up tight by bailiffs last week after the operator defaulted on more than $40,000 in lease payments and back taxes. The agreement between Bogey Enterprises and City of Chilliwack was terminated after lease conditions were breached, and a new operator could be sought after the dust settles. In the meantime, some of members, who just paid their annual fees, were fuming to find the 18-hole golf course suddenly shut down when they showed up to play a round of

golf last week. “We want to know what’s going to happen now. We’re concerned about our memberships,” said member Bill McIntosh. McIntosh is a Chilliwack resident, who has been a member at Cheam for about five years. When he pre-paid his $554 membership for 2012 a few weeks ago, there was already talk about how the operator knew he was in trouble financially. “Now we’re hoping to either get our money back, or get a membership for the next season,” he said. A security guard now patrols the locked site on behalf of the bailiffs to keep it secure.

“It’s never fun to have to take action like this,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz, referring to the lease termination and property repossession. “But we have to protect our taxpayers’ financial interests.” The golf course on Luckakuck Way is located on city property, and the land was leased to the operator, Bogey Enterprises, for recreational purposes specifically. The golf course itself is not technically owned by the City of Chilliwack, just the land under it. Almost $40,000 in lease payments and taxes were owed to the City of Chilliwack by the end of October, but now it’s already substantially more than that since the tally is mounting

daily with accrued interest and legal fees, said city staff. Bogie Enterprises was in its 15th year of a 35-year lease agreement with the City of Chilliwack. City officials said they have received no payment to date on what’s owed since March 11. They waited to see if a penalty deadline for taxes would be met in August, but a breach of lease notice had to be issued on Oct. 26, hand-delivered to a company principal, according to city staff. Disgruntled golf course members can contact the city to leave their names and contact information before the Dec. 13 property claims deadline. Continued: GOLFER/ p11

Serial killer pleads guilty to prison cell murder Robert Freeman The Progress Convicted serial killer Michael Wayne McGray pleaded guilty Monday to the first-degree murder of his cellmate at Mountain Institution last November. McGray coolly admitted in court that the killing of 33-yearold Jeremy Michael Phillips by strangling him to death in their cell on Nov. 21, 2010 would mark his seventh conviction.

“I’m 100 percent guilty of planning and committing this murder,” he said, via a video link to a special handling unit in Quebec where he is being held. The court was reluctant to accept McGray’s guilty plea via video, especially without legal counsel, but the 45-year-old convict was adamant he did not want to return to B.C. - and he was well aware of the legal consequences, given his six earlier life sentences.

“I just want to wrap this up,” he said. “I don’t need to talk to a lawyer. In fact, I refuse. I don’t want to talk to a lawyer.” After repeatedly asking McGray if he was aware of the what he was doing, and after ensuring his plea was made voluntarily, BC Supreme Court Justice Brian Joyce sentenced McGray to life in prison without eligibility for parole for 25 years. Although McGray had said in an

earlier court hearing that he was paid $20,000 to kill Phillips, he did not object to a summary by Crown counsel Grant Lindsey Monday that the murder started as a fake hostage-taking plan cooked up by the two convicts. Lindsey said McGray told police after his arrest that Phillips wanted to stage a hostage-taking in which he would be tied up so that he could go to the prison infirmary and McGray could go back to Kent

prison. But McGray said he became angry with Phillips and decided to end his “bullshit” and kill him. With a razor and nail clippers, McGray told police he cut up bedsheets to tie up Phillips. He said Phillips “gave him a hug” and then lay face down on the cot just after the 10:15 p.m. cell count so McGray could tie him up. Continued: MURDER/ p11

Making it happen for health at the Coast Jennifer Feinberg The Progress It’s a double-whammy of community fundraising efforts at the Coast Chilliwack Hotel this week to benefit Chilliwack General Hospital. “As usual all funds raised in the community, stay in the community,” said Vicki Raw, spokesperson for the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation. It all starts with a magical event to welcome the holiday season on the evening of Dec.

1 with a Coast Christmas Tree Lighting at 6 p.m. “We’re expecting a bigger crowd this time around since it was only the first time we held the event last year,” said Raw. “We’ve had more lead time for this year.” The tree-lighting event is followed bright and early the next morning by the Make It Happen For Health breakfast 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Dec. 2 at the Coast Chilliwack Hotel. Last year, the combined efforts of both events raised

more than $4,000 for the foundation. “We’re hoping to do even better this year,” said Raw. The funds collected will be directed to areas of greatest need at CGH. “We are thrilled with the partnership we have forged with the Coast with these events,” said Raw, which handles the fundraising for CGH. “They are so supportive of the hospital and the foundation.” For the tree-lighting event, patrons purchase bulbs for $5 each, and then watch as

the tree lights up with local generosity. Hot beverages, treats, as well as a visit from Santa, choir music and a violin troupe will be there to enjoy. Then it’s a delicious hot breakfast the next day for a minimum donation of $10, or a Starbucks coffee from the drive-through, for those who don’t have time for stop for breakfast. There will also be raffle prizes, entertainment and a few speakers. jfeinberg@theprogress.com twitter.com/CHWKjourno

B.C. now appears close to inking a new 20-year policing contract with the RCMP. Negotiations in Ottawa ended last week with a tentative agreement that would keep the Mounties as the police force for most B.C. cities, said Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender, the municipal observer in the talks. No details have been released on the new contract, which is subject to detailed technical review, consultation with cities and may require further refinement. To meet an end-of-November deadline imposed by Ottawa, the deputy ministers leading the talks for each province or territory are to confirm by Wednesday they will recommend the agreement to their respective ministers and cabinets, Fassbender said. Final decisions to sign would still be up to each provincial cabinet, he said, and promised city councils in RCMP-policed cities will get detailed briefings as soon as possible. Fassbender said the recent talks have been “productive” and said federal officials have become more willing to address municipal concerns. “Everybody came to the table with a desire to find the best for both Canada and the provinces and territories,” he said. Cities had demanded greater control over how the RCMP are managed, particularly in the containment of costs and greater transparency and accountability. Federal officials in September told B.C. to sign the new RCMP contract by the end of November or they’d begin withdrawing the Mounties in 2014. That ultimatum prompted B.C. Solicitor General Shirley Bond to begin considering the launch of a replacement provincial force, if necessary. Any new contract would still have opt-out clauses under which any city can form its own municipal force or the province could end the RCMP contract and form a provincial force. The deal is not expected to change the current cost-sharing formula, which sees large cities pay 90 per cent of local RCMP costs, while smaller ones pay 70 per cent. A new contract management committee to address local concerns on an ongoing basis is among the new components of the contract.

Penner steps down PENNER from Front 9, which has been slowing down traffic and possibly saving lives ever since. But Penner also said in his speech, “however, to everything there is a season, and for me the season of serving in elected office is drawing to a close.” He will join Vancouver law firm, Davis LLP early in 2012, on the heels of his political career, and will work on their environmental and renewable energy practice. “It (politics) is a challenging calling and can and should be a noble profession in my view, but I’ve never thought of it as a lifetime career for me. “Therefore, I have informed the Premier that after checking with the Conflict of Interest Commissioner, I have today accepted an exciting position as senior counsel with the well-known law firm of Davis LLP.” Penner had made the original decision not to run at the end of the summer, and stepped down as B.C. Attorney General at the time. B.C. Opposition leader Adrian Dix found out about the resignation Wednesday when Penner stood up to announce it in the legislature, and spoke to The Progress over the phone about it. He’s known the local MLA for 15 years, and suggested Penner’s most significant political role was as minister of environment. “We frequently disagreed, but he was a hardworking and dedicated guy,” he said. “I’m sorry to see him go.” Even when they took opposing points of view, “we still had good, respectable debates,” Dix said. “I also think he had a way of making fun of himself, around things like his cat or the effort to save the Vancouver Island marmot, which was fun.” The B.C. NDP recently announced a new candidate for Port Moody-Coquitlam. “Clearly now we will be looking at another byelection in Chilliwack-Hope,” he said. “We will work hard to find and run a very strong candidate.” jfeinberg@theprogress.com

By-election fight

R AESIDE

Opposition parties wasted little time gearing up for the by-election expected this spring in the riding of Chilliwack-Hope. On Friday Barry Penner said he would be leaving the legislature earlier than planned to take a position with a Vancouver law firm. (See story, front page.) That leaves open a prime opportunity for both the BC Conservatives and the NDP to make gains in a traditionally Liberal territory. Penner had already said he would not seek re-election when he announced his decision to step down as Attorney General several months ago. However, when it became clear Premier Christy Clark would not be calling an election until 2013, Penner decided not to wait. BC Conservatives were quick to pounce. Party leader John Cummins promised Friday to run a high-profile candidate in the riding. NDP Leader Adrian Dix, meanwhile, made clear that his party, too, hoped to make gains on the work done by Gwen O’Mahony, who finished second to Penner in the last election. Both parties clearly sense an opportunity. Opposition parties tend to do well in by-elections. For one thing, the narrowed focus of the campaign allows them a larger stage for their platforms. Secondly, voter turnout is usually lower than in a general election, and often draws the protest vote. It’s often seen as a chance to register dissatisfaction with the existing government without fear of actually bringing it down. All these factors put additional pressure on local Liberals as they choose their next candidate for the riding. Currently only Diane Janzen has announced her intention to seek the nomination. It will be interesting to see if, given the changed landscape, others are so willing to join the fray. ~ Greg Knill, Chilliwack Progress

Putting a price tag on a warming world Just as a new Canadian report confirmed that the recent loss of sea ice in the Arctic is greater than any natural variation in the past 1,450 years, the 17th UN Climate Change Conference got underway yesterday in Durban, South Africa. For the next two weeks some 7,000 delegates representing 195 countries and organizations will be wrestling with the consequences of a warming world. And Canada can expect some severe criticism since the Harper government is refusing to sign on to a second commitment to the Kyoto Protocol. “The Kyoto Protocol doesn’t meet our simple criteria,” said federal Environment Minister Peter Kent during a speech to the Economic Club of Canada earlier this month. “It has not been signed by all of the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters.”

So what happened to the concept of a leadership role? The Harper government has never been warm and fuzzy about Kyoto. Under that Protocol, we had committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to six per cent below 1990 levels by 2012. That’s not going to happen. The Copenhagen accord committed Canada to reducing Margaret emissions by 17 EVANS per cent below its 2005 level by 2020. Environment Commissioner Scott Vaughan, who tabled his 2011 report in October, said he thought it next to impossible that Canada would be able to reach its Kyoto target. The gap is too wide. The calculated emissions in Canada in 2008 were 734 mil-

lion tonnes, or 31 per cent above the Kyoto target. Making matters worse, the government has consistently lowered its greenhouse gas emissions targets since 2007. In fact, emissions targets have dropped from 282 million tonnes in the first plan to a mere 28 million tonnes in the latest plan, a drop of some 90 per cent. No wonder Vaughan is highly critical of Canada’s performance. The problem isn’t only commitment to reducing GHGs but a commitment to a game plan. Vaughan said in his report that “despite allocations of more than $9 billion, the government has yet to establish the management systems and tools needed to achieve, measure and report on greenhouse gas emission reductions. Key elements missing include consistent quality assurance and verification systems to report actual GHG emission reductions

and clear and consistent financial reporting systems for the measures in the plans.” He added that the plan is made up of at least 35 different programs that are disjointed. One of the main problems, he said, was that there are too many information gaps, or non-transparent information, make it impossible to quantify cause and effect. Then there’s the issue of the Alberta oilsands and the inefficient environmental monitoring systems at play which, said Vaughan, is one of the country’s most serious ecological hotspots. During his speech in Toronto, Kent announced that $148.8 million will be spent on climate change adaptation funding over the next five years spread through 10 programs in nine departments. But that’s pittance. Look north. Along with melting Arctic sea ice, thawing perma-

frost is causing buildings to sink. Inuvik, which has experienced the largest increase in air temperature in all of Canada, is looking at costs of close to $121 million to try to fix the problem. That town alone would gobble up Kent’s five-year budget. But climate change isn’t about a simple five-year plan on adaptations. The consequences of global warming stretch in front for many decades and will bring complex challenges such as economic development or hardship, population shifts as huge numbers of people migrate to new regions, increasing needs for sustainable development, resource management, food production, and the response to rising sea levels. This week Canada will deservedly face tough questions in Durban. The Harper government has to do better.

Next election we have to do better and personal expenses to contribute to a better community are all deserving of better support and appreciation at the polls. The pathetically low turnout, less than 20 per cent of eligible voters, reflects a lack of appreciation for the blessings, privileges and protection we enjoy

as Canadians and, yes, residents of Chilliwack. Compare our social and living conditions and infrastructure with the lot of 65 per cent of the global population living in abject poverty and all which that entails, day after day. My conclusion is if you could have voted but

neglected that privilege, you should evaluate your indifference and lethargy, repent and get to the polls on the next round. Encourage your friends and neighbors to do likewise. Surely this is the duty of every responsible Canadian citizen.

George H. Epp Chilliwack,B.C .

Departing DPAC vice-president sounds like sour grapes I admit I was a little taken aback with yesterday’s headline concerning the DPAC vice -chair stepping down.... was it that slow a news day? I don’t know Kirsten Branderith or Katie Bartel and I’m sure they’re wonderful people, but how petty can you be? You didn’t win so you quit? I thought we as adults were to model grace when we lose, think what you want to yourself but try to lose with dignity and live to fight another day. I think it was very unfortu-

nate that this was printed, the thinly veiled contempt for the existing board was quite frankly insulting. Katie Bartel would be well served to maybe be a little more objective and a little less partisan, she is a reporter after all. We the public aren’t as stupid as you think, we can tell when there is bias and manipulation, please try harder and just give us the facts, thanks. James Wiens

Editor’s Note: Perhaps the loss of a long-time parent volun-

teer and 10-year veteran of the District Parent Advisory Council might seem a non-issue to some. But coming at a time when barely 15 per cent of the Chilliwack population bothered to vote, others might argue that the erosion of public involvement is worth talking about. Some may have wished the former DPAC president had gone quietly, but she didn’t. And her years of service to the school district and to the community has earned her the right to comment on why she left.

You better watch out You better not cry Better not pout I’m telling you why Santa Claus is coming to town

Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la, la la la, la la la. Troll the ancient Yule tide carol, Fa la la la la, la la la la. See the blazing Yule before us, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Strike the harp and join the chorus. Fa la la la la, la la la la. Follow me in merry measure, Fa la la la la, la la la la. While I tell of Yule tide treasure, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Fast away the old year passes, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Hail the new, ye lads and lasses, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Sing we joyous, all together, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Heedless of the wind and weather, Fa la la la la, la la la la.

The city has no plans to take over the golf course, and claims will have to settled with the operator. Meanwhile city officials will be seeking to collect on the operator’s debts, and the property and contents on-site will be under the control of the bailiffs, Consolidated Civil Enforcement until at least Dec. 13. The mayor said she couldn’t recall a similar situation faced by the city, and it wasn’t clear if the reason for not paying his bills was tough economic times, or something else. “But there was no way to prevent this, as the guy clearly defaulted,” she said. “But there are still some unanswered questions for those who have golf memberships, and hopefully we’ll be able to reveal some future plans to the public shortly.”

Killer pleads guilty But instead of the hostage-taking plan, McGray said he strangled Phillips for five minutes, and then punched him in the head to make sure he wasn’t faking death. He told police he had to kill Phillips “very quietly” because a guard was only 23 feet away. He didn’t report Phillips’ death until the next morning.

Cooking oil sparks apartment fire

Thank You

to the 100’s of readers who participated in the Chilliwack Progress Readership Survey.

Congratulations Betty McKenzie

Betty was the lucky winner of a 42” Samsung LCD HDTV from

The Progress Apartment dwellers are lucky a sprinkler went

off and put out a fire that flared in a pot of cooking oil, say Chilliwack Fire Department officials. Crews were called to

the 30-unit apartment building on Edward and Spadina on Thursday. The resident had put a pot of oil on high to cook some wings, and had forgotten about it until he noticed the oil had ignited, said assistant fire chief Ian Josephson. “He grabbed the pot and moved it to the sink but it flared up when he threw flour on the fire. Fortunately the sprinkler went off, allowing the male to escape unharmed.” The apartment dweller told crews he had wanted to walk the pot of oil out of the building. But the pot was too hot handle. Throwing flour on it, however, is not the best idea in a panic situation, since the flour tends to ignite. Throwing a lid on

top is better than trying to move it. “That’s how people end up in the burn unit when that burning oil gets splashed back.” Fire crews shut off the sprinkler, ventilated the apartment and began loss control operations. There were no firefighter injuries, but there was minor smoke and water damage to the apartment and adjacent units. “Chilliwack Fire Department would like to remind the public to be careful in the kitchen. If a fire ignites in a pot or pan do not try to remove it from the stove but slide a lid over the fire and turn off the element.” For more on preventing fire go to www.chilliwack.com/fire.

Vigil to mark Aids Day A candlelight vigil to commemorate World Aids Day is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Thursday at Central Park in downtown Chilliwack. “We hope to see more people out this year showing their support

for those that have been living with HIV/AIDS,” organizer Colleen Crook said in a statement. “We plan on letting people know that, as of January, we will be holding monthly support groups,” said Crook, who is also coordinator of The Gypsy Project Society. “Until I got HIV myself, I didn’t realize that there is nothing here for people living with HIV/AIDS,” she said. The vigil will start at 6:30 p.m. at the park, at the corner of Young Road and Victoria Avenue.

Bringing First Nations stories to the classroom Katie Bartel The Progress

Nerine Graham dreams of one day seeing aboriginal culture taught seamlessly in Chilliwack schools. She doesn’t want the culture to be taught for one month and then tucked away for the next nine months, never to be spoken of again. She doesn’t want the culture to be exclusive. And she doesn’t want students of First Nation descent to be taken out of the classroom for separate lessons, away from all other students in the class. “We live in the middle of Sto:lo territory; this is part of our local history, said Graham, an aboriginal education coordinator with School District 33. “Knowing where you live and understanding the people around you, that’s important. Chilliwack school district’s Lit Kits are clearing the path for Graham’s dream to come true. The kits are a literacy initiative, created by the aboriginal education department and curriculum department, chock full of aboriginal culture and local history. They are tub-sized treasure troves filled with First Nations books that include Rough Face Girl, Red Parka Mary, The Raven, Shi-Shi Etko, The Elders are Watching, and Frog Girl. They also have aboriginal artifacts such as rabbit fur, jewels, moccasins, toques, choke cherries, and leather to connect the young readers to each story. Almost all of which are authentic and many made by the locals. “We didn’t want to assume that students knew what everything was, so we tried to add as many different objects as we could that could bring the stories to life, said Graham. The signing of the Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement last year prompted Graham and Shawna Petersen, vice principal of curriculum, into action. The Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement is a working agreement that was signed between Chilliwack school district, Chilliwack’s aboriginal communities and the B.C. Education Ministry and is meant to make education more meaningful for aboriginal students. Something many believe is long overdue. In Chilliwack, approximately 15 per cent of the student population (1,794 students) is aboriginal, representing 12 different bands. Of those students 312 live on reserve, and 1,482 off reserve. The school district has consistently struggled to get its aboriginal students to graduation. According to the ministry of education’s 2010-11 completion rate data, just 55.6 per cent of aboriginal students who started in the district six years prior graduated. The Lit Kits are one initiative towards

4th Annual

improving those numbers. After working extensively with members of the Sto:lo, Coqueleetza, and Cheam communities, and with teacher representatives from grades 1-6, 18 interactive kits were created with six different themes. Oral language is at the forefront of each. A large component of the elementary school curriculum is oral language, but “we didn’t want kids to just stand up and do speeches, said Petersen. “We wanted it to be more interactive. With Lit Kits, some of the oral lessons include students predicting stories based on a book’s cover; using their memories to piece pictures of a story together; and using their senses to describe a story. In Hollie Redden’s Grade 3 class at Unsworth elementary, students walked around the classroom answering thoughtprovoking questions about the book All the Stars in the Sky. Before reading the book, Ms. Redden asked her class what they were wondering after seeing the front cover. “I wonder why the coyote is sitting on six bows and arrows, said one student. “I wonder if a hunter is going to kill the coyote and the coyote is going to become a constellation in the sky, said another student. “I wonder if maybe the constellations

are the coyotes relatives who died, said another. Those young wonderings had both Graham and Petersen glowing. “We use to pull aboriginal kids out of their class and do these kinds of lessons in a separate room, said Graham. “When you’re pulling students out for

these lessons, you’re only impacting three or four of them, added Petersen. “But when you bring the history and understanding into the whole classroom, now you’ve got 24 students who understand. kbartel@theprogress.com twitter.com/schoolscribe33

Patti was fortunate to attend the recent Business Excellence Awards and was very impressed by the calibre of business that is represented in our community as well as the hard work of the board and Alyssa Conkin in putting this event on. Chilliwack Hospice Society is once again offering the community the chance to remember a loved one with a beautiful and unique gesture. Celebrate A Life allows participants to remember some who was precious to them, by writing their name on a butterfly ornament and hanging it on a special tree. Butterflies will be hanging from two Celebrate A Life trees in different locations this year, say hospice officials. One is at Minter Country Garden store at 10015 Young Road from Dec. 1 to Dec. 22. CHS volunteers will be at the store during business hours and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. during extended hours. The second Celebrate a Life tree will be at the Thrifty Boutique, at #260-45428 Luckakuck Way, Monday to Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The winners will also receive a great Christmas present from the library! More information can be found at the Chilliwack and Yarrow Libraries. Please pick up your packages starting Nov. 25. Make sure your finished letters are returned to the Library by Wednesday, Dec. 14 so the winners can be sure to make it into the newspaper by Dec. 25.

Chiefs absorb pummelling in Penticton Eric J. Welsh, The Progress While hockey coaches hate to lose, they will tell you that sometimes, a loss can be a good thing. Adversity builds character. Lessons can be learned in defeat. Stuff like that. But what do you do when your team loses 9-0? Those are the ones coaches want to put in the rear-view mirror as fast as possible. Burn the game tape. Move on. Nothing to see here. “But you need to somehow get something from it,” Chiefs head coach Harvey Smyl said Monday morning, two days after a 9-0 drubbing at the hands of the Penticton Vees. “We’re trying to piece together exactly what happened and find something to prevent it from happening again.” Through 20 minutes of Saturday night’s game in Penticton, Smyl’s Chiefs stood toeto-toe with the vaunted Vees. Connor Reilly scored the only goal in period one, with Penticton out-shooting Chilliwack 10-5. But the wheels fell off in a disastrous second period as the Chiefs coughed up five goals. Minnesota Wild prospect Mario Lucia scored at 6:31, followed in short order by Steven Fogarty (8:14), Reilly (10:14) and Bryce Gervais (10:42). Some of the damage was to be expected, with the Vees icing the most offensively loaded roster in the league. You can’t hope to shut them down. You can only hope to contain them. But Smyl felt much of the damage was also self-inflicted. “They’re a very talented team, but we can’t give them the space that we did and make the mistakes that we did,” he said. “Our ratio of turnovers and defensive breakdowns in the neutral zone was really bad and led to way too many odd-man rushes.”

Logan Johnson scored in the final minute of the middle frame, giving Penticton a 6-0 lead heading to period three. Chilliwack’s starting goaltender, Mitch Gillam, was yanked after the fourth Penticton goal, having given up four goals on 14 shots. Backup Bryton Udy was marginally better in a busy third period, facing 19 shots and surrendering goals to Travis St. Denis, Gervais and Johnson. “We hung both goalies out to dry a bit, and they’re just too good a team to give them the chances that we did,” Smyl said. “Their weapons up front are very good and they have lots of them. Give them an opening and things will snowball on you pretty quick.” It’s not that the Vees are actually nine goals better than Chilliwack. Their talent level is superior, but the Chiefs are capable of sticking with the Interior conference leaders. On Friday night, the Chiefs fought tooth-andnail, taking a 5-4 loss at Prospera Centre — with one or two bits of puck luck, they might have knocked off the Vees. As the Chiefs prepare for a mid-week game in Prince George followed by two weekend games in Trail, they’ll be best served remembering Friday and forgetting Saturday. Chilliwack’s next home game is Dec. 7 versus Merritt. ● The newest Chief made his debut Friday night at home versus Penticton. Jordan Ethier, acquired from the La Ronge Ice Wolves late last week (in exchange for Chris Blessing) played both weekend games. “He struggled this weekend, and he was no where near where he thinks he can be and we think he can be,” Smyl observed. “He showed one good period in the six, but once he settles in I believe he’s got the size and skill to be a good player for us.”

Chilliwack’s Alexandre Perron-Fontaine (left) checks Penticton’s Joey Benik during a BCHL game Friday night at Prospera Centre. The Chiefs lost this game 5-4. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Two Chiefs selected to all-time teams

Two Chilliwack Chiefs have been picked for all-time BCHL teams, with the league revealing results of fan voting over the weekend. As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the BCHL invited fans to vote on the best players from five decades, starting with the 1960s. The first Chief to get the nod is Shawn Horcoff, who earns a spot on the all-1990s team. The current Edmonton Oiler played for the Chiefs in 1995-96 before moving on to four seasons at Michigan State University. Now into his 11th National Hockey League season, Horcoff has 149 goals and 417

points in 707 career games. The second Chief to get voted in is Jeff Tambellini, selected to the all-2000s team. Tambellini played for the Chiefs from 2000-02. The Calgary native lit up the league in 2001-02, scoring 46 goals and 117 points in just 34 games. Tambellini was a first round draft pick of the New York Islanders, who took him 27th overall in 2003. He split 242 big-league games between the Islanders and Vancouver Canucks. Tambellini is in the Swiss A league this season, playing for Zurich. Chilliwack head coach Harvey Smyl guided both players during their BCHL days and said both are worthy selections. “I’ve seen lots of players come through this league in the last 20 years and they’re up there with the best of them,” Smyl said. A noticeable omission was

the absence of Doug Ast from the all-1990s team. Currently a Chiefs assistant coach, Ast collected 242 points (101 of them goals) in 160 games, but was left out by voters. “Dougie played with teams that weren’t at the top of their league and some players didn’t match his skill,” Smyl observed. “And still, he put up great numbers. I think Dougie should have been there.” Fan voting produced some interesting results across the board. The all-2000s team includes several current NHLers; Travis Zajac (New Jersey), Kyle Turris (Phoenix), Andrew Ladd (Winnipeg), Duncan Keith (Chicago), Tyler Bozak (Toronto) and Jamie Benn (Dallas). The all-1990s team includes current Montreal Canadiens star Scott Gomez, along with Willie Mitchell (Los Angeles Kings), Brendan Morrison (Calgar y Flames) and

Chuck Kobasew (Colorado Avalanche). Recently retired Paul Kariya is also voted onto the team. Kariya played for the Penticton Panthers in 199192. A recent Stanley Cup winner highlights the all-1980s team, with ex-Langley Eagle Mark Recchi having just won the Cup with the Boston Bruins. He’s joined by an ex-NHL who’s who list that includes Brett Hull, Olaf Kolzig, Cliff Ronning, Geoff Courtnall and Ray Ferraro. The all-1970s team includes NHL hall of famer Glenn Anderson along with Stanley Cup winning goaltender Andy Moog and Abbotsford Heat president Ryan Walter. Bob Nystrom, a key member of the New York Islanders dynasty of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, is the key name on the all 1960’s squad. Get the full list online at www.bchl.ca.

IT’S BIG AND IT’S BACK. RECYCLE YOUR RIDE IS ALL ACROSS CANADA.

ONLY FOR A LIMITED TIME. ONLY AT YOUR FORD STORE.

Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program is a great incentive for consumers looking to save on their next vehicle while responsibly recycling their old one. Since the program was first offered in 2009, Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program has retired more than 50,000 old vehicles. And now, in an effort to recycle even more, the program has been expanded to include 2005-model-year-or-older vehicles. So even more people can receive between $500 and $3000* in incentives towards purchasing or leasing our smartest, safest, and fuel-efficient Ford vehicles. Like the Focus, Fusion, and F-150. Even the award-winning Fiesta and Edge. Our goal is to replace as many older vehicles still on the road today with more fuel-efficient, lower-emission Ford cars, CUVs, SUVs, and trucks. And you can help. If it’s time to recycle your ride, just visit any Ford Store across the country. But hurry, because Recycle Your Ride is only back for a limited time.

✞ Obituaries JARVIS Vincent Steve

Vincent Steve Jarvis died suddenly on November 9, 2011 at his home in Chilliwack, JARVIS BC. Vince was born 1955 in Calgary, AB and shortly after his birth his family moved to BC and in 1957 settled in Rosedale. Vince graduated from Chilliwack Senior High School in 1973, and after graduation he worked for CPR for two summers, attended Langara College for a year then worked as a prison guard at the BC Penitentiary and Mountain Prison until Dec. 1980. He married his wife Sharron Pitman in 1978 and in January 1981 decided to change careers, from a prison guard to a Heavy Duty Mechanic. This trade took him and family to several places across the country. In 1989 Vince returned to Chilliwack and remained there until his passing. Vince had been attending Fraser Valley College and this was important to him as he met many people he enjoyed conversing with and it also engaged him in something he was passionate about, the love of learning. He fondly thought of his friends who live in his apartment building as family. He will be greatly missed by surviving family, Mother, Claire [Sardis]; Sisters, Kelly (Bob) Perras [Edmonton] & Maureen (Kevin) Reynolds [Okotoks]; Brother Ainsley (Maria) [Rosedale]; Wife, Sharron [Chilliwack]; Daughter, Samantha (Trevor) [Mission]; Son, Matthew [Chilliwack]; Grandson, Gavin [Mission]; and many nieces and nephews [Rosedale, Langley, Delta, Edmonton and Okotoks]. A memorial service was held by family and close friends on November 16, 2011. The family would like to thank all those who expressed condolences and for the support during this sad time.

MITCHELL Gary Percy

Gary passed away November 23, 2011 at VGH, with his wife, MaryKate, and children Tony, Jes- MITCHELL sica and Julia by his side. He fought a hard battle and gave it his best shot with a bone marrow transplant on September 2nd, 2011. Gary is survived by his wife and fishing/hunting partner Mary-Kate, his children, Tony, Jessica and Julia, step-daughters, Carrie and Katie Dunlop, all of Chilliwack, BC sister Lynda (Don), niece Holly (Nathan), sister Kathy (Doug), brother Greg (Mary-Therese), niece Carly, nephew Ian (Kim), all of Kitchener, Ontario as well as many aunts, uncles, and extended family. He was predeceased by his father George Mitchell and his mother Florence Mitchell of Kitchener, Ontario. Gary was born August 24th, 1953 in Kitchener, Ontario. He headed out west in a mini with his friend Joe Weber and 2 guitars not long after high school

and decided to call BC home. What better place for such an avid outdoorsman. Gary met his ultimate “partner” MaryKate in December of 2007 and they wed in May of 2010. They lived a lifetime of adventures in the 4 years they were together. Gary loved to frequent second-hand and antique stores, and was always so proud of the “treasures” he would find and couldn’t wait to “share” them with his friends and family. He was a partner, father, friend, handyman, musician, artist and comedian. He lived to fish and hunt and loved being with nature. He had a healthy curiosity about everything surrounding him. He was larger than life and could make anyone laugh in an instant. He loved to experience anything new, and shared his experiences with all around him. He was generous to a fault and touched many lives. He had an infectious laugh and could find the humor in anything. Hook, Line and Sinker, my Love. A special thanks to the team of doctors and nurses at the St. Pauls Hospital Hematology Unit and the VGH Leukemia BMT Unit. Gary was treated with love and respect from beginning until end. A memorial service will be held on December 13th, 2011 at 1:00 p.m., at the Chilliwack Fish and Game Club (48685 Chilliwack Lake Rd.) A further service will be held for his Ontario family and friends. Details to follow, In lieu of flowers, a donation to the leukemia BMT unit or VGH/UBC foundation in Gary’s name would be greatly appreciated.

SMITH Eugene Lawrence Mar. 16, 1936 - Nov. 24 2011 “Gene” passed away peacefully on Thursday 24 Nov 11 at the Chilliwack General HospiSMITH tal at the young age of 75. He was born in Saskatoon Sask on 16 Mar 36 and raised in Kelowna BC. Gene was the first of 6 children born to Mr and Mrs Paul Smith. He is survived by his siblings, Lucille (Decoteau), Dan, Louise (York), Yvonne (Clarke), Anita and was predeceased by his sister Lorraine (Johnson). He married his bride, Serena Nancy-Ann (Bryson) while they were both enlisted in the RCAF and stationed in Clinton ON. They had 6 children. Gene was predeceased by his youngest son Alan Joseph and is survived by daughters Rhonda, Karen (Riley), Kelly and sons Danny and Patrick. He will also be sadly missed by both his son-in-law Raymond Riley and daughterin-law Jane Smith and his 10 grandchildren, Kaylee, Maggie, Jennifer, Racheal, Bobby, Jonathan (Natalie), Karen, Alex, Amanda and Chris and great granddaughter Lillian. Dad enjoyed his large family and especially the times when his family got together as they are literally spread between both coasts due largely in part to his 27yr military career

which allowed Dad to take his family to Ontario, France, Nova Scotia and Alberta. Dad also worked with the Canada Corrections at Kent until his retirement. Dad enjoyed camping, gardening, relaxing but especially enjoyed those times when he was helping those less fortunate whether it was assisting handicapped children at riding classes in Chilliwack, umpiring an Agassiz Minor Baseball League game or simply attending the Glenwood Manor Day Care where he offered free smiles, kind words or just a sympathetic ear. And as per his request, friends and family are invited for an informal gathering at the Agassiz Legion from 3-5pm for those wishing to “Hoist a Pint” in celebration of Gene’s life. A grave site service will be held at the Agassiz Valley View Cemetery at a later date. The Family wishes to extend their heart felt thanks and appreciation to all the staff at Glenwood Manor, Chilliwack General Hospital and Dr. L Macintosh for there compassion and support. In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to the Canadian MS Society.

STACEY Ronald Joseph Gordon Feb. 3, 1939 – Nov. 21, 2011 Ron passed suddenly and unexpectedly in his home last week. He is survived by his 3 children, STACEY Carrie, Jeanine and Andrew, their spouses Grant, Steve, and Joanne and their children Eric, Nicole, Kyle, Raymond, Cody, and Bailee, and many many loving friends and acquaintances. Ron led a full life and was known for his skill at all things handyman, a deep passion for gardening, and could seemingly build, grow or fix anything. He enjoyed visiting the USA, taking driving trips, golfing as much as he could, and gardening. He was an active volunteer at the Chilliwack Seniors Center and was always there to help his kids and friends whenever they needed a hand. He graduated from Burnaby South High School class of ‘57, and VVI class of ’60. He spent his career at BC Tel and retired as an Engineering Department Supervisor where he was well liked by his many colleagues. Ron was a spiritual man who enjoyed the church community at the Unity Church in Bellingham and enjoyed studying the eastern religions, metaphysics, and astrology. As per his wishes the body will be cremated as the spirit has moved on. Please join us for a celebration of life service at Woodlawn Mt Cheam Funeral Home 45865 Hocking Ave, Chilliwack, BC on Sunday December 4, 2011 at 3:00 pm.
