A 54-year-old Abbotsford man who stabbed a woman to death in the foyer of her Harrison Hot Springs home in 2007 fits the criteria of a dangerous offender, but was sentenced last Thursday as a long-term offender instead. Sidney Andrew Robinson was sent to jail by a B.C. Supreme Court Justice for a total of 12 years - but will effectively serve only four years when double credit for time already served in custody is factored in - followed by 10 years of “close supervision” under the long-term offender designation. By law, Justice Brian Joyce was required to consider longterm offender designation, although Robinson fit the criteria of a dangerous offender, which would have meant an “indeterminate” prison sentence and supervision for life. Protection of the public, not further punishment, is the aim of the legislation. Robinson was found guilty of manslaughter on March 18, 2011 for the slaying of Holly McFadden, a 54-year-old teacher, on June, 29, 2007. Robinson had met McFadden at a New Year’s Eve party that year, just after he’d been released from the psychiatric ward of the MSA hospital in Abbotsford where he was treated for a mental breakdown. But he was also under treatment for a brain-injury suffered in a motorcycle accident in 2000. Continued: CROWN/ p6

Yale First Nation Chief Robert Hope is taking the high road in the treaty dispute with the Sto:lo and offering to back off a proposed permit system to control access to fishing sites in the Fraser Canyon claimed by Sto:lo families. “That’s not going to be imposed right away, if at all,” he said, in a telephone interview Friday. “It may be better to put that aside,” he added, explainiing that it is just one o option the Yale people aare looking at to manage their lands. I’m hoping Another option is direct talks with families between then and who have traditional fishnow to sit down ing sites in the canyon. But the very idea of with Joe Hall and asking the Yale for perothers to talk in a mission to access fishing and other cultural reasonable manner sites and religious sites is a and plan things out major bone of contention the Sto:lo, who had for (Sto:lo) people to asked the B.C. governto come up to Yale ment to hold off approving the treaty until a “shared territory” agree~ Yale First could be reached Nation Chief ment with the Yale. But last week the Robert Hope treaty received overw whelming support in the B B.C. Legislature, with all b but one MLA voting to approve its terms. The treaty now moves to the federal government for final approval, but Chief Hope said he hopes to meet with Sto:lo leaders before that happens to resolve the differences between them. “I’m hoping between then and now to sit down with Joe Hall and others to talk in a reasonable manner and plan things out for (Sto:lo) people to come up to Yale,” he said. Although the approval by B.C. MLAs was “a great victory for the Yale,” he said. “I’m not going to rub their noses in; I’m not going to strut around.”

Sheriff cuts endanger court security, union says Jeff Nagel Black Press A major cut in the number of sheriffs who guard B.C.’s courts will leave the public, witnesses, judges and staff at greater risk of violence, according to their union. The provincial government plans to reduce the hours of 52 auxiliary and part-time sheriffs, equivalent to eliminating 34 fulltime positions. “The safety of the judges, the safety of the court staff, the safety of the sheriffs and the public is compromised and at risk,” said Dean Purdy, spokesman for the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union.

“More and more gang activity and violent crimes are being dealt with in the courts,” he said. “I think it’s only a matter of time before we see major incident occur in one of our court houses.” The planned cut comes on top of past reductions in the ranks of sheriffs – as well as judges and other court staff – that have been blamed for lengthening waits for cases to get to trial and some of those cases being thrown out due to unacceptable delays. Almost 100 sheriffs – nearly 20 per cent of the workforce – have been lost to attrition during a fouryear hiring freeze, mainly as sheriffs move on to higher-paying law enforcement jobs.

Judges have increasingly refused to run their courts in some parts of B.C. when there’s no deputy sheriff available to provide security. Purdy said the downtown Vancouver trial of the Okanaganbased Greeks organized crime group is proceeding at the highsecurity court room built for the Air India trial, but full safety procedures are not in effect. “There’s no search gates set up,” he said. “I’m almost certain that’s due to a lack of staffing.” Purdy predicts the new cuts will cause more court date cancellations and fuel further delays in the courts. Court rooms have sometimes been closed in Kelowna, Kamloops,

Victoria, Nanaimo and parts of the Lower Mainland in recent months due to the lack of sheriffs. Judges have increasingly spoken out about the shortage, saying there’s potential for volatile or dangerous situations to erupt in court without security. Trial Lawyers Association of B.C. president Azool Jaffer-Jeraj said the shortage of sheriffs and judges causes a ripple effect through the system. “Recent courtroom closures were caused by a shortage of sheriffs and this will only get worse as staffing cuts cause harm throughout the province,” he said. “Courtrooms should not be empty when there is a backlog of

Tracy Wolbeck said.

cases to be processed,” Jaffer-Jeraj said. “It erodes justice.” February’s provincial budget approved cuts totaling $14.5 million for court services, prosecution services and the judiciary, despite a published warning from the provincial court that more than 2,000 criminal cases are at risk of being quashed due to excessive delays. “Our number one priority remains the safety and security of our courtrooms and our court facilities, but we are also living within a budget,” Attorney-General Barry Penner said in the legislature June 1, under questioning from the NDP.

“They had no idea what they were walking into, and were able to get a child out safely and apprehend the suspect without incident,” she said. A 23-year-old Chilliwack man has been charged with robbery. Police said a lone male entered the 7-Eleven store

on Yale Road at about 5:30 a.m. demanding cigarettes and wielding a cleaver. “The male attempted to jump over the counter and swung a floor sign at the clerk, missing her,” Wolbeck said. The man fled the store but without taking any merchandise.

A police dog team tracked the suspect to an apartment building on Williams Street. Police entered the building, and found the child sleeping on a couch. After carrying the child out of the residence, police found the suspect hiding under some clothing in the unit.

Betty Fox, mother of the late Terry Fox, is seriously ill, according to a statement posted Friday on the Terry Fox Foundation website. Media reports have stated she is in Chilliwack Hospice, and at least one such report stated she was suffering from cancer. The statement on the foundation website says this is incorrect. “We wish to share that our wife and mother, Mrs. Betty Fox, is seriously ill,” the statement read. “Media reports today that she has cancer are incorrect. To respect her privacy, no other details will be provided. “We have always appreciated the support and understanding the media has granted to our family since Terry’s Marathon of Hope in 1980. We are hopeful that Betty’s privacy and ours will be respected at this time. We thank you in advance for your consideration.” For more than 30 years Betty has been the face of the Terry Fox Foundation, encouraging, inspiring, pushing the world to continue her son’s dream of eradicating cancer. She quit her job, traveled the world, listened to stories, shed tears, shaved her head, and was selected to be a flag bearer among other Canadian celebrities for the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics – all in the name of her son. It was what he would have wanted. “I knew what Terry started was far more important than me loving the work I do, far more important,” she told The Progress last September for the 30th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. “I don’t ever want anyone to think that this has changed my life. What I have done has been for my son and because I have believed in his cause. I believe there will be a cure for cancer.” To date, over $550 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research through the annual Terry Fox Run. Well wishes, cards and letters of support can be emailed to bettyfoxmessages@gmail.com or on the Terry Fox Foundation website at http://www.terryfox.org/cgi/page.cgi/wellwishes.html. They can also be mailed to the Terry Fox Foundation national office at 303-46167 Yale Road, Chilliwack, BC, V2P 2P2.

Get ready to name that pig. The logo of the Chilliwack Fair has undergone a makeover as part of the plan to reinvigorate the 2011 event, said event coordinator Nancy Spratt. To herald some of the changes being made by the Chilliwack Agricultural Society, a “Name That Pig” contest will kick off at the Canada Day celebrations at Heritage Park on Friday, July 1. The bright new logo, by Tracy Keen Graphic Design, features iconic imagery that characterizes Chilliwack: from the green heart of the agricultural community, to the corn that makes Chilliwack famous and of course, a sweet-natured, smiling pig. The official name of the much-loved local event is also being shortened to simply Chilliwack Fair — dropping the Exhibition part. However that aspect will be proudly main-

tained with a “good slate” of 4H open livestock classes, as well as a horse show and gymkhana. “This local event has been around for almost 140 years, and the exhibition has been there year in and year out, so it’s clearly implied,” Spratt said. Specific plans and details about the 2011 fair are still being worked out. “But rest assured all the well-loved aspects of the Chilliwack Fair will still be there. We’ll have a few new food vendors, and more interactive displays.” After July 1, entry forms for the Name That Pig contest will be available online at www.chilliwackfair.com.

“I’ll take the high road, he said. But Chief Joe Hall, president of the Sto:lo Nation, said the dispute isn’t with the Yale people so much as the federal and provincial governments for considering a treaty that would hand control of fishing, cultural and religious sites “sacred to 10,000 Sto:lo to about 150 Yale people. He insisted it’s not an overlap issue, because the Yale band is actually a Sto:lo village, a claim vehemently denied by Chief Hope. Hall also suggested the province made a “huge mistake approving the treaty that he said flies in the face of B.C.’s “new relationship with aboriginal people, and Premier Christy Clark’s “families first policy. The approval will have an impact on treaty tables around the province, he warned. A Sto:lo request that the proposed treaty be referred to the government’s aboriginal standing committee for review was ignored, Hall said, and the settlement “rushed through the legislature for political reasons. Hall said he believes the federal government will take the time to carefully review the treaty. “They don’t feel as compelled (to quickly approve) for political reasons, he said. In the meantime, the Sto:lo lobbying effort in

Ottawa will continue. It’s not clear what the impact of opposition to the treaty by BC Conser vative Leader John Cummins, a former MP and outspoken critic of native fisheries, will have on federal MPs, if any. Chief Hope said Cummins’ opposition to the treaty is a concern because “he is one individual who uses the system very well, and uses it for his benefit, maybe not ours. But Chilliwack MLA John Les suggested Cummins’ influence in Ottawa is waning since his decision to run for leadership of the B.C. Conservatives. Several of his MP colleagues in B.C., including Stockwell Day, are unhappy with his decision, fearing it might split the right-wing vote. “He doesn’t seem to have the support of his former colleagues, Les said. Chief Hope said contrary to Cummins’ statements, the Yale do not have an “exclusive fisheries agreement, and most provincial and federal laws will still be paramount to any future Yale legislation, which is restricted to its own land and people. “We have very little law-making ability, he said. The fisheries agreement is also outside the treaty, he said, which means it does not have constitutional protection and can be amended.

News Crown argues for ‘dangerous offender’

Top Sales for May

CROWN from Front McFadden befriended the man one forensic psychologist at trial described as a “ticking time bomb” with poor impulse control due to the brain injury. He also had a string of convictions for violent crimes against women, including sex assault and robbery. But on Thursday Justice Joyce said he was

satisfied, based on expert testimony at trial and by reports of Robinson’s behavior while in custody over the past four years, that there is a “reasonable possibility” Robinson will respond to treatment programs in prison, and to others while under supervision in the 10 years after his release, to gain the selfcontrol needed to ensure the protection of the public.

Crown counsel had argued at earlier hearings that only dangerous offender status which would have kept Robinson in custody for an “indeterminate” time followed by a lifetime of supervision - could guarantee protection of the public, in light of the permanent brain damage. But at Thursday’s sentencing hearing, Joyce said Robinson’s “remorse” for killing

McFadden - one of his few friends - his conduct in custody over the past four years, especially his consistent use of medication prescribed for depression, gave him “optimism” that Robinson would do well when released into the community, under “close” supervision. “He cannot be cured for his traumatic brain injury,” Joyce said. But he added that Robinson will likely live in a half-way house during the 10-year supervision order, and there are treatment programs designed specially for brain-injured people. The justice also said that Robinson, who was 50 years old at the time of the attack, will be nearly 70 years old when the supervision order expires, and that age is a factor in committing violent crimes. “I’m satisfied that (age) is something to be taken into account in this case,” he said. McFadden’s two sisters and a brother-inlaw, who have attended nearly every day of court hearings since 2007, were at the Chilliwack courthouse Thursday, but chose not to comment immediately after the sentencing. A former commonlaw wife of Robinson’s also attended many of the court hearings, but she also chose not to comment immediately Thursday. rfreeman@theprogress.com

A comprehensive consultation with a certiďŹ ed Hearing Care Professional to understand your needs

The physical layout of a new community garden in Chilliwack will be mapped out at a meeting on Thursday, June 9 at the site on Wells Road. Project partners Food Matters Chilliwack and Chilliwack Society for Community Living are inviting participants to their second gathering at the Mathieson Centre, 45195 Wells Road. “Join us in growing and sharing fresh, local food in Chilliwack, said Rachel Poupere from Food Matters Chilliwack. They’ll also be deciding on the rules and regulations they’ll adopt to operate the community garden at this week’s gathering in Sardis. “By joining the Community Gardening team you will become part of an exciting initiative, growing and sharing local produce, creating community around healthy eating, and learning to grow food sustainably, all while playing in the dirt, added Poupere. For anyone who missed the first meeting, the group discussed what they’d like to grow and what type of garden they’d like to create.

Shredding for the food bank It’s a great way to get out from under the paper clutter — and feed the hungry. Shred-It officials will destroy up to two file boxes of confidential documents for free when you make a donation at the Spring Food Drive and Shred-a-thon at the Cottonwood Mall on Saturday, June 11. It’s become a tradition with the efforts of Shred-It, City of Chilliwack, and Emterra Environmental, which make disposal of unneeded documents easier while supporting the food bank at the same time. It will be a timely event, said Don Armstrong, food bank coordinator at the Chilliwack Salvation Army. “Right now our food and cash reserves are very low,” he said. Officials will be accepting boxes of paper and food bank donations from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the mall parking lot.

Volunteers still being sought for garden project

Cash donations always offer Sally Ann officials the best bang for their buck. “For every dollar donated, we can buy two dollars worth of food,” said Armstrong. They’re in that postChristmas collection lull, and buying in bulk always helps them stretch a dollar. “For the first time in May, we had to go buy bread instead of securing donations of it. Bread and potatoes are items we said we always wanted to include.” he said. For some reason, the stores that used to give them day-old bread have started reducing the merchandise and keeping it in-store. But a 28 per cent increase in demand for local food bank and soup kitchen services, from 2008 to 2011, is very significant, said Law. “We’re seeing a lot of single parents with babies lately. “Also the highest level of food bank use for 2010 was reported

across Canada,” he said. Of course Chilliwack’s reputation for its generosity is well-known, he said.

“They always come on-board right away.” Emterra Environmental will match cash donations to the food bank up to $500.

R AESIDE

Less reason to axe the tax Is a two per cent cut to the HST sufficient to keep the tax reform measure alive after June’s referendum? The B.C. Liberals are hoping so. The cut, along with annual rebate cheques for each child and lowincome senior, the “fixes” mean all income brackets will be better off under the HST than with the old provincial sales tax structure, according to finance minister Kevin Falcon . The current low-income rebates would continue to be paid, and $175 transition cheques would go to parents for each child under 18, and some seniors as well. Single seniors earning up to $40,000 a year would get the entire $175, and a partial payment for incomes up to $43,500. Senior couples would receive $175 for a combined income up to $40,000 and a partial payment up to a $50,000 income. The measures do remove much of the argument against the HST, albeit over three years, with the first one per cent cut occurring in July of next year. Including the rebates, the impact of the HST will be largely negated for the income brackets ostensibly least able to absorb an additional tax burden. And according to the government, the statistically average family will see an overall tax reduction of about $120 per year when the HST rate reaches 10 per cent.In the meantime, the HST has the potential to do what it was intended to do, which is to boost the economy by reducing costs to business, and encouraging investment and job creation. It makes little sense to return to an antiquated, multi-layered tax system – other than to “punish” the government for the manner in which it rolled out its tax reform policy. To do so might yield superficial satisfaction for some, but eliminates the prospect of long-term economic benefit for all. - Black Press

Spring weather tells a story of contrasts Finally, this past weekend looked like spring, or maybe a springboard into summer given how long it’s taken for warm weather to actually show up. Endless Pacific frontal systems during that dreary May kept the rain tap running for 21 days, just one day short of the record 22 days of rain in May 1996. According to Roger Pannett, Environment Canada volunteer weather observer for Chilliwack, with an April and May mean temperature of 9.83C (1.42C below normal), it was the coolest period since 1955. In fact, the 2011 precipitation in total is over the top with 1,040.7 mm rain on 107 days compared to the average of 859.1 mm on 80 days. But if it’s been miserable here, it’s been far worse elsewhere. “In some areas of the same

province you had those wild fires like in Slave Lake while in other parts you had floods,” said David Phillips, senior climatologist with the Meteorological Service of Canada. “We saw the Assiniboine River have the highest flood in 300 years. In Windsor, Margaret Hamilton and EVANS Montreal we had the wettest spring on record. We saw parts of Quebec under water.” What sets this spring apart according to Phillips are these huge contrasts from one part of the country to another and even within the same province. Fire and flood in Alberta dominated the news. It’s rare, said Phillips, to see such diverse records in the

same season. “When I look at precipitation curves for the spring period, there are very interesting things,” he said. “In parts of the country (the Great Lakes-St Lawrence Lowlands) it was the wettest spring for 64 years. At the same time in parts of the Yukon, NWT and the northern prairies it was the driest in 64 years. When you see numbers like that it’s quite different (to the norm).” The economic results can be huge with damaged infrastructure and delayed seeding in flood areas while dry areas suffered the onslaught of forest fires, devastating communities like Slave Lake in Alberta and Wollaston Lake in Saskatchewan. But we have not had the severe weather that has plagued the U.S. with tornadoes, hail and lightning. “Our misery has been (caused

by) fire and flood but in the U.S. the tornadoes have been lifechanging.” As of June 1st, there have been 1,415 tornadoes reported in the U.S. this year of which at least 1,007 were confirmed. This year has been destructive worldwide with 537 people dead. In Bangladesh, 12 people died, one died in New Zealand, one in the Philippines and an estimated 518 people have perished in tornadoes in the U.S. Compare that to 564 deaths in the U.S. in the entire decade previously. The Joplin, Missouri, tornado that struck May 22nd was an EF-5, the highest rating. The tornado, which was over 1 km wide, tracked on the ground almost 10 km (6 miles) killing 134 people and injuring over 900. Some are still missing. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA), it was the deadliest tornado since recordkeeping began in 1950. The worst on record was the notorious TriState twister, an EF-5 that struck Missouri, Indiana and Illinois March 18th 1925 with a 291-mile path killing 695 people. As for this summer, predictions are for very welcome warmer than normal weather. “Long range it will be generally hotter than normal from June through August,” said Phillips. “The only area not warmer than normal (we’re predicting) is the west coast of B.C. where near normal temperatures are predicted. But really from Hope eastward to Labrador we’re showing warmer than normal weather conditions.” Warmer and dryer means finally a chance to get out planting and growing.

Comment sounds like elitism when the standards of education in the area appear by any criteria to be well behind others in the province then it is the duty and responsibility of the trustees to investigate. For the Professor to suggest that it is in essence “none of your business” because they have a superintendent to look after all the hiring is not only a lame rationale but gives the impression that she believes that those not employed in education haven’t the ability to understand the issues. Does it then follow that parents haven’t the right to be involved and concerned about their children’s education because they are not teachers? Of course the superintendent must be listened to but it only

stands to reason that those who hire that person must be able to act if they have concerns. Ms. McMath seems to be suggesting that the only role of the trustees is to make sure the money is there so that those best qualified can run the show as they wish and not be responsible to anyone other that the superintendent. Sort of the old “Trust me, I’m impotent” idea. It’s only common sense that those elected to look after education should be able to do so. If they don’t fulfill their role then the electors can get rid of them at the next election.

Let district staff do their jobs I fully support Sheryl McMath’s, UFV professor, position that trustees micromanage the school district. When Heather Maahs expresses alarm about the attrition of school district personnel, she needs to look no further than the faces in the mirror of the Chilliwack School District Trustees. Having been a secondary school principal and vice-principal for 22 years and having personally known doz-

ens of superintendents, assistant superintendents both as colleagues and friends in many districts, I have witnessed the frustration of many of them as they try to deal with school trustees over the years. Superintendents waste the majority of their time and energy with the board of school trustees. They spend the majority of their time educating, convincing, cajoling and flattering trustees who know little about education and are

more interested in their own political agendas, or their political aspirations. The role of school trustees has become superfluous over the years. Their only usefulness is to buffer the Ministry of Education and politicians from complaints and special interest groups. There was a day when Chilliwack had trustees who were dedicated to education and put students first: Norman Crabtree, Don Patten, Betty Meager and Dick

Bates to name a few. Let the superintendents do their job without the micromanagement of trustees and you’ll have better school districts, more efficient school district offices and longer serving staff members who do not flee or retire at the first opportunity. They can spend their time as was intended as educational leaders rather than as mollifiers of trustees. Tony de Wit

what’s going on, what are the problems, what can we do to fix them?” However the next line quotes me as saying that the “trustees could hold down the fort.” What I said, quite clearly, was that we had many good people in the Board Office who were very capable of holding down the fort. The changes I suggested to

the hiring policy are not unique or strange. They are taken from examples of other districts and their hiring policies including Abbotsford, Coquitlam and Vancouver. We all need to work together for the benefit of the students in the school district.

The suggestion by Professor Sheryl McMath that Chilliwack Board of Education Trustees leave all the hiring of administrative personnel to the superintendent of education sounds suspiciously close to elitism. To say that only superintendents have the qualifications to hire administrators is a bit scary, especially so when you are speaking of a very large percentage of the board of education budget - which the trustees, and not the superintendent, are responsible for. Trustees are elected by the public to look after education and the taxpayers money which goes to education. B.C. Views

Yale treaty is toughest test yet for treaty process VICTORIA – The treaty with the Yale First Nation in the Fraser Canyon was hastily approved as the B.C. legislature adjourned for the summer last week. This treaty was by far the most significant work of the legislature session, and it may make or break the hugely expensive B.C. treaty effort. Yet it received all of four hours of debate during the abbreviated spring legislature session and will probably get little attention when it reaches the House of Commons for final approval. A few eyebrows were raised when Chief Justice Lance Finch of the B.C. Court of Appeal entered the legislature to give royal assent to the treaty and a handful of other bills. This would normally be the duty of Lt.-Gov. Steven Point, but he was on a four-day visit to promote literacy at reserves in the Quesnel and Williams Lake area. I’m advised by the lieutenant-governor’s staff that this trip had been scheduled for some time, and his absence had nothing to do with the treaty awaiting his signature. It is purely a coincidence that Point is a former tribal chair of the Sto:lo Nation, which sent a delegation to the legislature to protest the Yale treaty just before it was tabled. The only substantive scrutiny of the treaty, and the only vote against it, came from independent Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson. He stressed that he supports the Yale’s right to a treaty, but detailed the Sto:lo’s objections. Their central objection is that the 150-member Yale band is an arbitrary creation of the Indian Act, a splinter group of the larger Sto:lo Nation. The treaty formalizes the Yale’s control over

key canyon fishing and rack drying sites that were vital to survival for thousands of years. Ottawa outlawed transfer of native hereditary property rights in its notorious potlatch law of 1884, and native fish sales in 1888. This disrupted whatever order had been imposed by Sto:lo clans on the fishing sites. Some Sto:lo people were moved south to reserves in the Fraser Valley,

where they were expected to abandon their traditional ways and become farmers. Sto:lo Nation president Joe Hall Tom put it to FLETCHER me this way: “I don’t want to be like Donald Trump and look at people’s birth

certificates, but the Yale are a Sto:lo band. They would have been chased out of there a long time ago if they weren’t.” In the treaty debate, Simpson put it to Aboriginal Relations Minister Mary Polak that the federal and provincial governments have resorted to a “first-past-thepost” system to force progress on treaties. He said the tiny Yale community gets a

huge advantage by completing a treaty, while some Sto:lo bands remain at an early stage of negotiations and still others aren’t in treaty talks. Polak cited a section that is now standard in modern treaties. It protects the constitutional rights of other aboriginals where a court upholds a claim to Yale territory, which they will soon own as fee-simple property. Polak insisted the

Yale treaty will ease tensions in the disputed fishing sites, where violent incidents have taken place. She argued that exclusive access to the main areas of dispute was long ago included in the Yale’s original reserves. The treaty will provide a process for temporary access by other people, native and non-native. We will see if she is right, perhaps as early as this summer.

There are two regions of B.C. where the encroachment of European settlers led to shooting wars with aboriginal people. One was the CaribooChilcotin and the other was the Fraser Canyon. A memorial service will be held at the cenotaph to remember soldiers from B.C. who lost their lives fighting in Afghanistan. Silver cross families will be in attendance. “This [ride] is about the moms and dads who don’t have their son or daughter anymore because they died serving their country,” said Drews. “It’s not political, it has nothing to do with that. It’s just the most simplistic form of respect.” Last year the event attracted 500 riders and raised just shy of $10,000. This year, they hope

B.C. is getting its own Highway of Heroes, the Ministry of Transportation is expected to announce today. This Saturday – the same day as the second annual Memorial Ride for the Fallen – the Ministry of Transportation will be unveiling a section of Highway 1, from the 152nd exit in Surrey to the Sumas exit in Abbotsford, which is being renamed Highway of Heroes. All thanks to a Chilliwack-based organization wanting to pay its respects. The 3rd CAV (Canadian Army Veterans) Ubique Unit, consisting of army veterans and supporters of veterans, got the ball rolling for the name change last year with its first ever Memorial Ride for the Fallen. Vice president Barry Drews pegged the motorcycling event as the West Coast Highway of Heroes. “It was the perfect wording,” he told The Progress. Just two weeks after the CAV’s memorial ride, Drews got a call from the Ministry of Transportation interested in creating a West Coast Highway of Heroes and wanting input from Drews. Nearly a year passed without another word on the matter. But when the CAV selected the Honour House Society for this year’s charity, they were introduced to Honour House president Allan de Genova, a former Vancouver parks commissioner. Drews said de Genova’s political connections helped speed up the process. “Allan was instrumental in helping us get the unveiling of the Highway of Heroes on the day of our event ... what would normally have taken 40 weeks, took us four,” said Drews. “This is big, huge. It’s never been done before in western Canada and it’s way overdue.” Highway of Heroes originates

Memorial ride remembers the fallen Katie Bartel The Progress Last year’s Memorial Ride for the Fallen was only supposed to be a one-time event. That is until organizers came face to face with B.C.’s silver cross families. “I could not say no to the silver cross moms,” said Barry Drews, vice president of the 3rd CAV (Canadian Army Veterans) Ubique Unit, which organized the ride. “They told me they couldn’t wait until next year. I knew we had started something here, that we couldn’t just let it go.” The second annual Memorial Ride for the Fallen is on June 11 starting at 11 a.m. This ride is not going to be your typical hog show. Yes, there’s going to be motorbikes of all calibre screaming down the highway, and

riders, who at first glance come off as being tough and gruff with their scruffy beards and leather chaps. But if you look closely enough, you’ll likely catch a glimpse of their super sized hearts. “Do you know how many tears these solid men are going to shed on this ride?” asked Drews. “We’re going to grab your heart, rip it out and throw it to the ground. The emotions are so raw.” How could they not be? The Memorial Ride for the Fallen was organized as a way of honouring and paying respect to B.C. soldiers who have lost their lives (nine to date) and to show their families that their children, their siblings, their nieces and nephews will never be forgotten. Hundreds of riders from all over B.C. will gather in Vancouver and ride their bikes

The donated books are offered for sale at tremendous savings, and proceeds help projects in our community and overseas.

.....helping local exceptional students This year, the Rotary Club of Chilliwack distributed $18,000 in scholarships to eight area high schools and $14,500 to 2nd & 3rd year UFV students, for a total of $32,500 in scholarships. Many of these scholastic achievers are also great community volunteers and personify the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”. Most of the high school grads will be taking further educational studies. Sophie Nickel-Thompson wants to take a 7-year program to be a Speech Pathologist. Joanne Indenbosch was inspired by watching nurses attend a sick family member, and she has set her sights on becoming a Registered Nurse herself. Want to find out about our Rotary Club... to double that with 1,000 riders and $20,000 in donations. Funds raised will go to the Military Family Resource Centre, a nonprofit organization that provides information, supports and referrals for Canadian Forces families, and to the Honour House Society, also a non-profit orga-

nization located in New Westminster, which provides free, temporary accommodations for families of injured soldiers and first responders who are receiving care in the Metro Vancouver area. This year, the CAV will also be raffling off a Canadian Forces Titan motorcycle that has been customized with images of Vimy

Ridge, the second world war, Korean war and Afghanistan. It has soldiers painted on, images of barbed wire fences, the Canadian flag, and John McCrae’s infamous poem In Flanders’ Fields scripted on the front. “It is an outstanding tribute to our troops,” said Drews. “Even if you’re not interested in riding, you want to have

this bike in your place to just look at it. It’s awesome, it’s a piece of art, it’s unbelievable.” The bike, donated by CAV member Kevin Richmond, is worth approximately $60,000. Raffle tickets are $50 each. The Memorial Ride for the Fallen is on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at the Hastings Community Centre parking lot at the corner of Hastings Street and Renfrew Street in Vancouver. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. The memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. And a reception will follow at the ASU. Cost to participate is $20 per rider. To pre-register go to www.honourhouse.ca. Huskers loading up on local lads Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Several members of Chilliwack Minor Football’s highly successful midget program are making the jump to junior football with the Huskers. The team held a signing day Thursday night at Exhibition Stadium. Among the players putting their names to a B.C. Football Conference player contract was Cole Herrmann, perhaps the top defensive prospect available in the entire province. Herrmann helped the midget Chilliwack Giants to a provincial title in 2009 and his non-stop motor may one day soon make him David Bosch V.2 for the Huskers. Cody Parray quarterbacked that Giants provincial squad, and signs on with the Huskers as a wideout. He is trying to bounce back from a devastating shoulder injury suffered late last year. Running back Josh Hayden is in the same boat, trying to re-establish himself after nagging injuries almost completely derailed his 2011 season. Linebacker James Williams also signed, providing Acheson with an option in an area of weakness. “Today is a great day and I’ve got a big smile on my face because not only are we signing six or seven Chilliwack players, but we’re signing six or seven of the best players Chilliwack has produced,” said Huskers head coach Luke Acheson. “And I think it goes to show what we’re doing with the Huskers, trying to turn that corner and change the reputation.” It wasn’t an easy thing to swallow last year as Acheson watched a handful of top flight Chilliwack-raised football players leave for

Nanaimo. As the 2010 offseason unfolded, big offensive lineman Tyler Oldendorf left for the Island. On opening day, the Raider roster included Ari Nakagawa, Evan Foster and Matt VanGeel. All four would have looked awful good in Husker black. All four spurned the local junior football team. “I was a little bit frustrated about losing three or four super, super players,” Acheson admitted. “I knew we were going to have to prove to people that we were doing things right around here, and it wasn’t going to happen overnight.” The bridge between CMFA and the Huskers was badly scorched during the Howie Zaron era. The bombastic coach twice earned BCFC coach of the year nods, but his strengths were recruiting and football strategy, not building relationships. “Perhaps I didn’t do enough to repair that bridge, because it was definitely broken,” Acheson said. “To think we were going to do that in one year was maybe unrealistic, but I feel great about it now. We’ve been out a bunch of times working with minor football and the little kids, and I get such a kick out of that. Those kids are amazing and it’s great to help them out.” Hayden’s ability had him on the recruiting radar for several teams. Small but fast, shifty and hard-nosed, the tenacious running back said it was Chilliwack all the way when it came time to plot his football future. “My whole thing is I’ve played here nine years and every offseason it wasn’t am I going to play for the Abbotsford Falcons or Mission Niners? It was always about playing for Chilliwack,” Hayden said. “There’s no reason for me to go anywhere else when there’s a

junior team right across the road.” Hayden’s big brother A.J. was an offensive lineman for the Huskers three years back, so there’s a family link as well. “This is where all my friends and family are and I don’t want them to have to travel to see me play,” he said. “I went them to sit in these stands where I sat watching A.J. play. This was an easy decision for me.” Though he joins a team coming off an 0-10 season, Hayden’s buying into the notion that much better days are ahead. “They had 45 rookies last year, which means they have 45 guys this year who have experi-

ence,” he said. “All us new guys are going to join a team that’s young and skilled, with a few veterans to lead us. Last season’s record didn’t play into it at all.” Gabe Marshalok joined the local contingent at the stadium on Thursday. The Langley secondary school student was offered a tryout by the Langley (formerly South Surrey) Rams, now coached by former Huskers defensive coordinator Jeff Alamolhoda. The Rams failed to impress and, after doing intensive research, Marshalok turned his sights to Chilliwack. “This is a team that’s building and if I’m here for the next couple years

it looks like the team will get progressively better,” Marshalok said. “Each year will be a step forward. I wouldn’t want to go somewhere where the core older guys are already there and I’d have no place. Getting here now will hopefully let me step forward with a new group of core players.” Marshalok will try to crack the roster as a wideout or free safety, and he also brings ability as a place-kicker. The kid has speed to spare, recently qualifying for the high school track and field provincials in sprinting. “On kickoffs, my range is 60 to 70 yards, he said. “And for field goals, around 40 to 45 yards.”

Each of the new recruits, Marshalok included, talked about how they were attracted to Chilliwack’s familyfirst atmosphere. While Nanaimo may win a lot of games and championships, the perception is that many players are little more than a helmet and a number. Acheson has gone out of his way to make players feel welcome and part of the team. “The moment I took the job, I knew it had to be a family thing for me to run it,” Acheson said. “I love every one of these players and I don’t bring a coach on if he doesn’t share the same philosophy that we care about these guys and want them to

be successful.” While the team keeps winning as the big picture goal, Acheson said every player’s individual goals are part of it. Whether they just want to play ball or advance up the football ladder, the Huskers want to be involved. “All 60 of these guys, we’ll sit down and find out what their goals, dreams and aspirations are, and we’ll make it our goal to make it happen,” Acheson said. “It is a team and family thing and that’s the way it has to be.” Huskers training camp starts in early July. CFC men net first win

Chilliwack FC’s U-21 men are finally in the win column after edging Vancouver FC 2-1 on Saturday. CFC came into the Pacific Coast Soccer League game 0-4, surrendering 14 goals over that stretch while scoring none of their own. Early on against a Vancouver team that came in 2-0, it looked like more of the same. “They came out pretty strong and they scored and we were like, ‘Uh oh. Here we go again,’” said CFC head coach Graeme Slee. “But the guys are starting to work well as a unit, and they started to come on after that Vancouver goal.” Kyle Staiger got the locals on the board with a rocket from 30 yards out. “His confidence will be through the roof now because he let it rip and it

was on a rope, catching the top corner,” Slee said. “The confidence for the whole team was flowing after that, and they knew they were going to score again.” About 12 minutes later, some good work by Jaye Amberg led to the winning goal by Scott Delcourt. “Jaye went down the right side, drew the defender in and slid the ball right across the park to Scott,” Slee said. “It was a sitter for him and he calmly swatted it into the corner.” The locals went into a defensive shell from there, nursing the one goal lead to the end. Chilliwack was helped immensely a full roster, including four substitutions. The visitors had nothing beyond their starting 11, a bad situation on a day where the sun was beating down at Sardis secondary school. “They knew we were a young team and they were travelling all the way out to Chilliwack with Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals that night,” Slee surmised. “But they’re still a good team, holy smokes. Most of their guys were 18, 19 and 20 years old while we’re going with 16 and 17 year olds.”

After battling hard through four hard-luck losses, Slee was happiest to see his young charges rewarded for their hard work and perseverance. “Look at Kyle. When he first came out he was very nervous. He wouldn’t challenge, he was a step behind, and it was strictly confidence,” Slee noted. “In this game he won everything in the air and the majority of his tackles. He scored a great goal and he was the man of the match by far. I think this team as a whole believes in itself now.” The road doesn’t get any easier just because they’ve got a win. Coming up, Chilliwack hits the road for a tough trip to Victoria on Saturday, followed by a visit to West Vancouver on Sunday. Both teams are middle of the pack in the Pacific Coast Soccer League, but the travel alone will make the matches difficult. “What I saw this weekend, I’m expecting to use that as a ruler for our future games,” Slee said. “It’s tough when you’re up against it every week. You need something to fall for you, and it did this weekend.”

CFC women topple West Van Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Chilliwack FC’s U-21 women blanked visiting West Van FC on Sunday, picking up three valuable points in the Pacific Coast Soccer League standings. Trying to get back in the win column for the first time since May 15, the locals scored all their goals in the second half en-route to a 3-0 win. Chilliwack came into the game shorthanded, with several players still coming back from AAA high school provincials in Kamloops. With only one sub available, coach Glenn Wilson wondered how his team would cope on a hot afternoon at Townsend Park. “We were a bit worried, but it actually seemed to affect our opponents more than it did us,” Wilson observed. The teams battled through a scoreless first half. “But it was very evident that it was a game we should win, and at halftime we all agreed this was a game were we should come away with nothing less than three points,” Wilson said. “Our opponents really weren’t threatening us much at all. Our defence was coping with them comfortably and their defence looked vulnerable. Chilliwack hit another gear in the second half, moving bodies forward to press the advantage. Aileen Atkins opened the scoring, camping on the goal-mouth to finish a cross from Kirsten Wilson.

Nicole Verdonk notched the second goal from the edge of the penalty box, booting a bouncing ball into the top corner of the West Vancouver net. “Atkins got the third goal, and it was pretty much a carbon copy of Nicole’s strike,” Wilson said. “A ball bouncing at the edge of the penalty area and a kick into the top of the net.” The last goal came 15 minutes before the end of the game, and West Van lacked the will to battle back. “We started to tire a little bit, but our focus was on keeping the ball and letting our opponents do all the running,” Wilson said. “West Van ran out of steam and pretty much gave up in the last 10 minutes.” Needing a top four finish to qualify for PCSL playoffs, Chilliwack needed a win over West Van to keep pace with the likes of Kamloops, the TSS Academy and the North Shore Stars. The locals still trail a front running group that also includes the Fraser Valley Action, but Chilliwack has games in hand on most of the teams they are chasing. “It’s important when you play against teams you should be beating that you beat them,” Wilson said of the West Van win. “We’ve got Kelowna coming up this weekend, and that’s another game we should look to get three points out of. We finished third last year and we’re right in there this year. The goal is always to improve on what we did the previous year.” See www.pcsl.org for more info.

Track stars at Swangard Smyl to match wits with O’Rourke Chilliwack sent a small contingent to the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships, held June 3-4 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. Ashley Heisler represented Sardis secondary school in the women’s 800 metre run preliminaries, placing 20th overall with a time of 2:39.51. Levi Halfpenny ran for Sardis in the men’s 200m dash prelims, placing 19th with a time of 24.04 seconds.

Halfpenny returned for the men’s 400m run prelims, placing 16th with a time of 53.34s. Adrianna Lunt represented Chilliwack secondary school in a pair of events. Lunt placed 11th in the 100m dash prelims with a time of 13.08s. She finished 10th in the 200m dash prelims with a time of 26.51s. Both times were new personal bests. Franziska Polthier also competed in two events, placing 25th in

the triple jump with a leap of 8.27m and 13th in the heptathlon with 2322 points. Dallas Peeling represented CSS in the men’s 1500m race walk, placing 14th with a time of 8:15.57. G.W. Graham’s Dina Davidson failed to finish the finals of the women’s 3000m run after recording a time of 11:24.00 in prelims. Get full results on the internet at www.bcsscctfa.bc.ca/results2011. html.

While Harvey Smyl works to assemble his coaching staff for the new Chilliwack Chiefs junior A franchise, the Langley Rivermen have replaced him behind their bench. Ex-Abbotsford Heat assistant coach Steve O’Rourke will take the spot left open by Smyl’s departure. “I am excited about building a team you can be proud of, a team with character, leadership, integrity, and above all, a huge amount of work ethic,” O’Rourke said at an introductory press conference on Friday. “I am excited about being part of this program going forward.” O’Rourke, whose professional playing career involved seven seasons in Europe, the ECHL and the UHL, earned his masters in sport management after completing his bachelor of arts in kinesiology at the University of Lethbridge. Prior

to joining the Heat, he spent three years working as the head instructor at the Okanagan Hockey Academy, so coaching teenage boys is not something new. “The pros were good to work with, but for the most part, it was refining those skills where here it is going to be teaching the game again,” he explained. “System-wise in Abbotsford, you only had to tell them once and they got it. Here it is going to have to be told several times, several different ways, and that is what I am excited about, the teaching part of it.” O’Rourke will be joined behind the bench by assistant coaches Bobby Henderson, Roy Henderson’s eldest son, and Jordan Emmerson. Pasco Valana will serve as the team’s goaltending coach, while Wayne Hubbard will be the team’s trainer.

Soccer Falcons falter Sardis secondary school’s senior girls soccer team had a tough time at the AAA provincials, held last weekend in Kamloops. Playing in the D pool, the Falcons earned one win with a 2-1 triumph over Panorama Ridge (Surrey). Sardis dropped round-robin games to Point Grey (Vancouver) 3-1 and South Kamloops (2-0), leaving them to take on Oak Bay (Victoria) in a cross-over game Friday. Sardis lost 3-1. Robin Anderson was outstanding in a losing cause, earning a spot on the Commissioner’s 11 team. Get full results at www. bcsssc.citymax. com/2011_aaa_girls_results.html.
