Flooded farmers count losses

Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Property owners and farmers hit by freshet flooding were hoping for reassurance at the town hall meeting hosted by City of Chilliwack last week. But blueberry farmer Amarjit Gill said there wasn’t much on offer. Their entire blueberry field they’ve been nurturing for six years is under water. They stand to lose about 20 acres of berries that would have ripened next month, and probably the plants as well. “This is a depressing situation for us. It’s not a one-man job to fix this,” Gill said. “Our whole life’s work is gone.” Since they pay the same tax as everyone else, she said they should get the same service as those behind the city diking infrastructure. “No one seems responsible for this,” she said. “I understand the water is too high but they shouldn’t leave us hanging like this. We would have liked to have heard that once the water goes down, they will repair the berm.” She hastened to add they are very “appreciative” of the emergency sandbagging efforts taken on their behalf, which likely saved the family home. City officials made it clear that property owners living behind the orphaned “berm” built by the province in 1997, are responsible for any flood and erosion impacts themselves. But in spite of this, the city nonetheless undertook an emergency program of flood work,

O’Mahony settles dust-up over HST signs - for now Robert Freeman The Progress Local Fight HST organizer Glen Thompson is protesting the city’s decision to remove the group’s signs, saying the removal violates freedom of speech provisions in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. But Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz defended the city’s action, saying the bylaw does not prohibit signs on city property, but sets out

a permit process aimed at ensuring taxpayers don’t have to foot the bill of removing signs after election and referendum campaigns are over. On Friday, NDP federal election candidate Gwen O’Mahony stepped into the fray with the $500 needed to obtain the permit, saying there’s not time to mount a court challenge to the bylaw before the June 24 HST referendum. But Thompson vowed he’ll fight the city’s sign bylaw in court after the HST vote.

Meanwhile, former B.C. Premier Bill Vander Zalm is coming to Chilliwack on June 16 to speak at the Coast Hotel as he winds up a tour of the province promoting opposition to the HST. Vander Zalm said he wasn’t surprised by the B.C. Liberal government’s promise last month to reduce the HST rate from 12 per cent to 10 per cent by July, 2014, but the final cut is three years away and “people don’t really trust them now.” “The B.C. Liberals could be out

of government by then, or some disastrous thing happens and the province needs more money,” he told The Progress. “If they can reduce it so easily, they could similarly increase it,” he warned. But Attorney-General Barry Penner, Chilliwack-Hope MLA, said the reduction is now enshrined in law, and can only be changed by the federal government.

Chilliwack shooting incident ‘gang-related,’ police say Robert Freeman The Progress Two Chilliwack men survived injuries in a gang-related shooting attack late Wednesday night in the Mary Street area near the Chilliwack General Hospital, an RCMP spokesperson confirmed Thursday. “Both men are very well-known to police and are known for their connection to the Metro Vancouver gang environment,” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said in a news release. She said the 11:30 p.m. shooting incident was “directly related to the drug trade,” but is not linked to “any one particular gang.” Police were called at about 11:30 p.m. by reports of shots fired in three locations near downtown

Chilliwack, and the sudden arrival of a vehicle with shattered windows at the Chilliwack General Hospital. Chilliwack RCMP arrived on the scene and found one of the males had made his way to the hospital, and the other had fled the area before police arrived. He was eventually located by a police dog team. A third female passenger in the car was not injured. A Mary Street resident told The Progress Wednesday night that he heard three shots and then a man banging on his neighbour’s door, holding his head and saying, “I’ve been shot.” The resident said the man was bleeding from a head wound, and asked him to call 911. But before he had a chance to make the call, a pickup truck

came driving down Mary Street “faster than the speed limit” and the injured man bolted into the back yard heading toward School Street. Wolbeck said an RCMP Emergency Response Team put the hospital emergency ward in lock-down and took over security of the unit to ensure the safety of the staff, as well as patients. “Anyone involved either directly or indirectly with the drug trade is at an enormous risk of violence, as we saw here last night,” she said. Both male victims, 36 and 39 years old, are expected to recover. Neither is cooperating with police. There are no suspects in custody, but the investigation continues with the Integrated Gang Task Force and the Combined Special Forces Enforcement Unit.

The Eagle Landing site is the third Chilliwack A&W in the past five years to have a commercial shot on the premises, said Glen Chalcraft, group account director with Rethink. “This new restaurant is a big draw. It’s the reason why we’re here.” Turns out it’s the first

A&W outlet on the Lower Mainland to be built with the distinctive “boomerang” roof design, with modern and retro visual elements built in. The fast food franchise has actually undergone a design metamorphosis of late, and the Eagle Landing restaurant will likely be the site of more shooting, as the vanguard of its kind in the area. “They do a redesign like this every 10 years,”

Chalcraft said. The other reason they’re here is the welcome reception they know they’ll get from everyone from the franchisee, to city, CEPCO officials — and the public. It’s not always like that when they try to shoot similarly in Vancouver. “That comes with its own set of challenges.” A&W restaurant owner Kim Konias was tickled last week to host yet another shoot at one of his five

A&W franchise outlets in Chilliwack. “It’s just great to see a Chilliwack A&W on national TV,” he says. The commercials are obviously popular with the public. “We just had a lady come by to say how enjoyable the ads are to watch,” Konias says. “It just puts our restaurants on the map. Regular customers love it.”

A new social media strategy for the City of Chilliwack will see officials using Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and blogging to get the municipal message out. At the last meeting, Coun. Ken Huttema asked what safeguards were in place to protect council from “anonymous” online postings of the negative variety. “What can we do so we’re not chasing our tail on that type of thing, and ensuring misinformation doesn’t get out to the public,” he said. Those type of posts are often “weeded out” by the online community itself, replied Starlee Renton, the city’s public relations specialist. And in the case of hackers, it’s usually a matter for the RCMP. Mayor Sharon Gaetz praised the new strategy, noting it covered all the bases and “protected” council from abuse. “It does keep us current, but more than being cool, it allows us to converse with people of this community,” she said.

Get ready for the return of the Spicy Mama Burger. When the burger campaign eventually comes back, it will be preceded by a zesty new commercial shot in Chilliwack last week. The new A&W at Eagle Landing was specifically chosen to film the fresh 30-second spot starring the friendly A&W manager Allen, played by actor Allen Lulu. When The Progress arrives on-scene a few hours into the 12-hour shoot, the restaurant is as warm as a steam room, and is packed to the rafters with cast, crew, extras and props. Lulu playfully jumps aboard the camera dolly, and mugs good-naturedly for The Progress camera. Outside massive transport trucks and a black tent flank the drive-thru restaurant and a huge light reflector screen looms nearby, tipping off passersby that it’s the scene of a film shoot. “Quiet on the set!” snaps the voice over the walkietalkie coming from inside the restaurant. “Shut it down inside and outside. We’re rolling.” The new ad, with a script emblazoned with the title, “Bring Back Spicy Mama Burger II,’ is the latest in a series of ads, created by Vancouver’s Rethink ad agency with Industry Films

sandbagging and road work to mitigate some of the flooding. “Possible funding avenues for business loss also came up at the meeting,” said city emergency planning coordinator James MacDonald. “Whether someone is eligible or not depends on the commodity they supply.” The city decided to help facilitate a committee, comprised mostly of affected residents and owners, to discuss the “next steps” in mitigation, once the water recedes. They also agreed to undertake private well water testing, like they did during the high water of 2007, to protect public health and safety. “The cool weather is in our favour now,” he said. “That being said we are consciously staying in touch with affected residents and working out what the next steps might be.” At least 17 properties outside the Chilliwack dike system have been affected by the 2011 erosion and flooding. The city can’t undertake any

more preventative work until the freshet water levels go down, but they will ensure that prevention efforts “remain on the radar” for followup. “It was not all doom and gloom,” MacDonald said about the meeting. “Obviously there is a bureaucracy in place, and we have to fit the needs and wants with what is available. “I believe the majority left with a clearer understanding of what was and was not available, and some rumours were quashed. “That was the intent of the meeting and everyone got the same message. That message might have been unpalatable for some, but I believe most were relieved to hear a consistent message coming from the city on this.” Hazelnut farmer Hanne Van Den Brink said she and husband John have been growing nut trees for 25 years, but this year will be a complete washout. High water is something they’re familiar with, but not like this. Their house is located inside the dike

system, so it’s fine, she said. But since the river current changed direction and started eroding the berm, they now face the terrible prospect of losing their entire back orchard, or 35 acres of hazelnut trees, planted in 1987. “That’s our livelihood. So I don’t know what we’re going to do. It sounds like everyone will just be taking their losses,” Van Den Brink said. “We hope they will keep plugging away trying to secure funding from the province or somewhere to fix it.” Some of the residents are frustrated that no one took responsibility for maintaining the orphaned berm in the years after it was built. Others were hoping for better news. “I think we were quite disappointed. It was the same bureaucratic thing where it’s not their responsibility, and there’s no funding available at this point for disaster relief. When is it a disaster? For us it’s a disaster. “We worked our whole lives and this year our income will be nil.”

Hikers spend night on mountain

Police say mountain hikers have to expect the unexpected sometimes. For the second time in 10 days, Search and Rescue volunteers were called out to find disoriented hikers. Police said a man called in on June 12 to report his 21-year-old daughter and a friend, both of Langley, had not returned from their hike to Williams Peak on Ford Mountain. Three SAR teams hit the bush just past 11 p.m. knowing that the two young people were prepared for an overnight stay, had proper equipment, and were experienced hikers. They were found at about 9 a.m. Monday, near where they entered the forest. The hikers had become disoriented and opted to spend the night on the mountain to start fresh in the morning. Between 3 and 4 a.m. they got up and started hiking toward the road. They were almost out when SAR personnel met up with them near a road.

The most common form of arthritis (O.A.) can be explained as the “earlier than normal wear” type. If a joint has sustained a significant injury in the recent or distant past, joints can start reacting to a “disturbance of the joints normal bio-mechanical balance” ; the way the joint normally moves. Also, longer term frequent overloading (or under loading for that matter) or repetitive movements can increase the pace of decline of normal healthy joint function. Ligament, bone, cartilage, tendon and/or muscle dysfunction can result in altered joint function/movement causing potential significant problems. In the short term this may cause inflammation (swelling, redness, increased temperature, pain) and limitations in the ability to use and load the joint. In the longer term, possible ongoing inflammation can be accompanied by premature wear of cartilage, new bone growth (osteophytes) and deterioration of joint stability or movement. It is a Physiotherapist’s job to help you on the path to regaining function, improving the strength/stability/coordination and Range of Motion in the affected joint(s) and to teach you about managing your joint pain and other symptoms independently Reviewing safety (for example lifting techniques) and prevention of further undue strain to the joint(s), including activity modification are also a key component of helping each client recover. When attending for a physiotherapy assessment, clients often have questions about what kind of activity level and/or exercises are recommended.

Arthritis; to move or not to move. by: Peter Devette, Registered Physical Therapist Arthritis is as common conversation topic as the weather, a good bread recipe or who won last week’s 6/49. Arthritis is a part of our lives, like it or not. By deﬁnition ‘Arthritis’ stands for ‘any inﬂammatory condition of joints’. Fact is there are more than 100 forms/types of arthritis. The most common form of arthritis is ‘Osteo-Arthritis’ (O.A.). Statistical data suggest that more than 5.5 million Canadians are living with arthritis and it has been determined it is one of the most common causes of long term disability in Canada.

For a therapist to come to specific recommendations, an assessment of Range of Motion, strength, joint stability and joint reactivity of the involved joint is conducted. The information gained in the assessment is then weighed together with the lifestyle requirements of each individual client. Common trends in recommendations to clients with arthritis type joint challenges can be identified. The following general guidelines are often a consideration in advise given to clients : 1. When a joint is acutely or actively inflamed one should try to limit the loading of the joint, try to assist in settling the inflammation (cold application, low key movement in the pain free range) and possibly consider, with guidance of the Family Physician, anti-inflammatory medication. Moving joints in water (pool) is considered one of the ways to be able to work on pain free mobility in a controlled environment. The buoyancy of the water allows for a greater ease of movement, reducing the effects of gravity. 2. Once the joint inflammation settles down, and pain free movement in the joint increases, the focus turns to further regaining and sustaining joint mobility (movement), in addition to further improving the strength of the muscles that surround the affected joint within safe limits. As the more acute inflammation of the joint settles, strength and stability get a renewed focus. Sufficient strength of the muscles that surround a challenged joint help protect it from further undue strain and assist in improving general blood flow to the area. Different ways of strengthening are considered (static, eccentric, concentric); if a joint is still reactive, static strengthening is often first implemented as it puts less strain on the joint surface itself. Often reduced weight bearing exercises are also considered (water exercises, stationary biking, cross trainer), which also gives the option of adding cardio-vascular exercise to the equation. More advanced exercises will often also tie in with activities of daily life (work, leisure activities, sports). Regaining strength and mobility should always be progressed gradually. Upon regaining joint function each client is provided with individually tailored exercise and lifestyle recommendations which extend beyond the visits to the physiotherapist. It will be of no surprise that these recommendations often include exercises that work on maintaining strength, range of motion, balance and cardio-vascular health. Movement of the joint and stability/coordination of the muscles surrounding the joint are key to regaining and sustaining healthy joints. Physiotherapists are movement specialists. How far we’ve come We’ve come a long way, baby. The huge crowds that have gathered at downtown viewing sites to watch the Vancouver Canucks ’ drive to win their first Stanley Cup have been celebratory and well-behaved. No matter that they’re crammed onto narrow city blocks straining to see what they can on distant big screen monitors. The surrounding municipalities have also jumped on board, Burnaby, Surrey, Abbotsford and Richmond all set up big screens for large gatherings of fans to soak in the Stanley Cup vibe. It’s human nature to share the company of others at monumental occasions, be they happy like a victory in the Stanley Cup, the arrival of a new year, or tragic like the 9/11 terror attacks, the assassination of a beloved world leader. Most world class cities have some sort of easily accessible location to host huge gatherings of people: New York has Central Park ; Paris has the Champs de Mars below the Eiffel Tower, London has Hyde Park, Berlin has the wide boulevards and parks around the Brandenburg Gate. Limited space and short-sighted urban design have left Vancouver without such a venue. That absence was a contributing factor to the 1994 Stanley Cup “riot” when post-game crowds ran amok downtown because they had no place to go. The lessons learned from that experience were put to good use during the 2010 Winter Olympics, when organizers created satellite gathering sites to serve the crowds seeking some Olympic buzz. It worked. A good time was had by all. That spirit has fueled the Stanley Cup street party. The addition of suburban sites has spread the party atmosphere to cities like Chilliwack where the large outdoor screen has drawn crowds each game night. The lack of stories on the nightly news about liquor seizures and unruly behaviour at these sites are testimony to how well they’ve been managed and how far the region has come since ’94. ~ Black Press

Fingers crossed and holding our breath When this is all over, hockey fans will define the 2011 Stanley Cup Final as an event at which they will always remember where they were ‘that day’. From cheering, screaming, towel-waving fans packed in the Rogers Arena to over one hundred thousand fixated on huge monitors on Vancouver’s streets, thousands more up and down the Fraser Valley, and countless thousands glued to televisions, computer screens and iPads around the world, this final leg of the playoff is truly unique. Hockey is the manic obsession of Canadians. To a fault, this is THE national game for which we have undisputed bragging rights. Our Olympic golds are evidence of that. Blue and green fan power has been unprecedented with a healthy number following the

Canucks from the arena to the airport and right on into Boston, Bruin-fan hostility be damned. This is so much fun to watch. Making it this far to winning the cup has been intensified all the more by the roller Margaret coaster wins and EVANS losses. We were up two games before going to Boston first time around where the team suffered two crippling losses for a combined 12-1 score for the Bruins. Goalie Luongo was vilified. Then last Friday on home ice the team rallied, triumphed in a 1-0 shut-out game to take the series score to 3-2. Luongo with his 31-save shutout alongside Maxim Lapierre

who scored the only goal were heroes. But so was the rest of the team. For these pros, it’s not so much momentum as a game-bygame thing. As elite athletes, these guys have the capacity to focus on the task at hand to the exclusion of all else, taking each game one by one and mentally banking the previous scores as the pathway to the next. It looks like it’s the fans who are flagging with exhaustion. In untold back yards and community rinks across the country, hockey is a rite of passage, a ritual between father and son, and between mother and daughter by today’s values. This is a place where goals are defined, hopes rise, and dreams kindled of being the next Gretzky, Crosby or Luongo.

Next to religion, we take this stuff pretty seriously. Hockey fans are, after all, born not made and the kids often follow the team of family choice. If parents are a Canucks/Oilers/Flames/Leafs fan, by genetic default so are the kids. Pre-schoolers lace up for ice time about the same age they get their first shoes. Any rebellious teenager daring to be different and root for the opposition gets TV remote rights withheld. This series has become larger than life. At the time of writing our Stanley Cup has not been won by a Canadian team since the Montreal Canadiens took it in 1993. That is 18 years the Cup has been lofted on U.S. soil. And on a historical note, Montreal’s original hockey team had been the first to raise the cup in 1893 back in the day when it was

Canucks and fans are salivating over a cup-hoisting third-time-lucky moment. With all the heavy issues in the world, this must seem pretty fluffy stuff to the uninitiated millions. Conflicting claims can be settled: Chief Hope This has been an exciting year for Yale First Nation, Yale people have ratified the Yale Treaty, the Yale Treaty was passed at the legislature in Victoria and the document will be forwarded to Parliament in Ottawa, one might say that we are two thirds of our way to effective date. After 17 years of negotiation I am relieved, happy, elated, joyous, in fact I find myself grinning all the time. I’m writing this letter to say thank you to a number of different people and groups, the negotiator for Canada and B.C. who conducted themselves in a professional manner over the years. I’d like to thank the regional district and directors and their constituents for their support over the years. I’d like to thank the former MP Chuck Strahl.

His support was immeasurable to the success of the treaty talks. Thank you to the people of Yale, B.C. and the outlying area, and of course thank you to the members of Yale First Nation. I’d like to thank the ministers and MLAs of all parties who dealt with the Yale Treaty at the legislature in Victoria. There are issues with our neighbouring first nation, the Sto:lo, who have stated publicly that Yale is a Sto:lo village; that this is not an overlap issue; and, that the fight is not with YFN but with Canada and British Columbia. All three points are wrong. I intend to correct these statements but not publicly with the media. The Sto:lo have concerns regarding access, post treaty, the general public probably have the

same concerns. I assure everyone in the governments, B.C., Canada, and First Nations governments that a fair and reasonable process will be constructed which will provide for people to enter our land post treaty. Sophie Pierre and Dave Haggard of the BC Treaty Commission are working to arrange another meeting which will be facilitated by themselves to deal with access issues for the Sto:lo fishermen. As I have stated in the past, actually since the late 1970s when I became Chief that I’m willing to meet with our neighbours and talk across the boardroom table as opposed to fighting on the river, the canyon walls, or the court rooms. Significant senate reform not a simple matter The initiative by John Les, MLA, to move British Columbia towards electing our Senators is a step in the right direction. It might be nice if we could adjust the number of Senators each province is allotted but this is almost impossible under the

terms of our constitution. Other changes are also needed such as limiting a Senator’s term of office and this may be possible if an agreement can be reached between Ottawa and the provinces. One point that needs to be made is that while

there is a lot of dissatisfaction over the makeup and role of the Senate very few people have read our constitution and have even the slightest understanding of the process for amending it. Our constitution contains a number of conditions that make amend-

ing it very difficult and it is not something the federal government or the provinces can do unilaterally. I would strongly suggest that all Canadians obtain a copy of our Constitution and read it. Jack Carradice

Humour is often a recurring element in this entertaining series of ads, and a little improved dialogue between the actors is not out of the question. “We’re always looking to strike a balance between the humour and the product itself,” Chalcraft said.

Taking education beyond the classroom The Progress Chilliwack secondary’s Envirothon team isn’t taking any chances this year. A blue binder, with the thickness of an Oxford Dictionary, is crammed full of soil characteristics, forestry dynamics, aquatic ecology, wildlife species, land use issues, estuaries – everything environmental and everything New Brunswick related. The CSS team, consisting of five grade 11 and 12 students, have been spending every spare moment reading it, studying it, memorizing it. “Last year was cutthroat, it was unbelievable,” said teacher Connie Williams, who led the team to Fresno, California last year where, despite coming in first provincially, they came in last internationally. It was the first international Envirothon competition CSS has participated in. “Last year was a stiff learning curve, I didn’t realize what we were getting into until we got there,” said Williams. “Now I know.” The Canon Envirothon competition is North America’s largest high school environmental education competition with more than 500,000 students throughout Canada and the United States competing locally and regionally for a spot at the international competition.

It’s a contest that goes beyond textbooks and the classroom and has students learning outside, working with industry professionals, and performing a variety of field studies. “I really like doing the field work, I absorb the information better when it’s hands-on,” said Grade 12 student Celeste Newbury. “I think it has more of an impact when you can see what you’re doing rather than just reading it in a book.” Leading up to the competition, on their own time, students learn about soil structures and farming practices, and how to evaluate land forms and soil characteristics. They study aquatic ecosystems and the effects of aquatic pollutions. They memorize forestry species, structures, dynamics, and wildlife. They also learn about current environmental issues affecting North American ecosystems. The international competition is stiff. Provincially the CSS Envirothon team has consistently placed first or second, but it’s only had to compete against a few other teams. The international competition, however, has 50 of the best teams throughout North America, and some who have had to beat out more than 100 other teams regionally. The CSS team, two of who are returning members, is using that knowledge as momentum. “We’ve already experienced it, we know what it’s like, we know how tough the competition is, and we’re going to be more prepared,” said Grade 11 student and returning member Alyssa Zucchet, who’s been working towards this

competition all year. “Last year was a trial run,” said Grade 12 student and fellow returning member Connor Ford. “This year, we want to win.” The knowledge needed for the regional competitions is focused on the local environment specific to each region. The knowledge needed for the international competition is focused on the area where the competition is held. This year, it’s New Brunswick. “We’re trying to learn as much on paper as we can,” said Williams. “And then when we get there, we’re going to have three days to look around the area ... three days to see how much more we can cram in our heads for just that area.” Since Canadian schools started participating in Envirothon competitions 15 years ago, they’ve only cracked the top 10 twice; B.C. has never made it to the top ranks. This year’s CSS team aims to change that. If they win, each student will receive $5,000 and a Canon camera. The competition runs from July 24-28. At a cost of nearly $12,000 for the team to attend, fundraising is necessary. The CSS Envirothon team is holding a dinner fundraiser on June 17 at 6 p.m. at Anavets, which is located at 46268 Yale Road. Soccer scholarship for Chilliwack star

Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Thomas Davies has done something unprecedented in Chilliwack youth soccer history, netting a scholarship from the B.C. Soccer Association. The 17-year-old Chilliwack secondary school student received the Pacific Coast Soccer League scholarship at the BCSA annual general meeting on Saturday, one of 11 given out this year. Davies, who has played youth soccer for 11 years and refereed for five, submitted his application in March. A scholarship committee looked at the applications. “I’m guessing what really helped with this was the refereeing because I officiate at a relatively high level in the province,” Davies explained. “I referee up to the university level and I do Premier Development League games, which is the same league the Vancouver Whitecap reserves play in. And I’ve done PCSL games for the last three years, which is probably why I got the PCSL scholarship.” Young referees should take note. Chilliwack FC is constantly trying to find and retain new officials. Seeing Davies turn refereeing into a scholarship may provide youngsters with the motivation to tough it out in what can often be a difficult job with high attrition rates. “Refereeing has always interested me more than playing and when I was eight or nine years old I was counting off the years until I could start to do

it,” Davies said. “We’re all a little bit crazy in a way to be doing the job, but I’ve always wanted to do it. In my first year doing full-field refereeing I was very fortunate to work with a national official three times in the first month. He put me on the right track and from that I’ve really learned to enjoy it.” Davies is the first to admit the job has its bad days, when coaches and players are offering ‘critiques’ at every turn. But it is the unseen side of refereeing that he wishes every young official could experience and embrace. “The dressing room conversations, the camaraderie and the sharing of experiences is something that is so enjoyable,” he explained. “In some ways it’s similar to playing on a team, but it’s also really different because of the type of people who do it.” As a player, Davies

has played up to the U-18 gold level as a goalkeeper. His team is travelling to Penticton in early July to play in provincials. Another factor for Davies was volunteer work and community involvement. Originally from England, the teen moved to the Fraser Valley in 1998. He has spent significant time working at Ruth and Naomi’s Mission and he’s pitched in with the Fraser Valley Watershed Coalition as well. And while it may have little to do with soccer, Davies also feels his time spent with the CSS music department played a role in the scholarship committee’s decision. “I’m in six performing ensembles, and we average 50 to 60 community performances per year,” he said. “Beyond that, I also volunteer with

guest services at the new Chilliwack Cultural Centre.” The scholarship is worth $1,200, equivalent to approximately half a semester’s tuition. In his first year he will study business at the University of the Fraser Valley, with the possibility of a future transfer to either Simon Fraser University or the University of British Columbia. Davies may apply the money directly to tuition costs, or he may use it to offset expenses as he continues his referee training. “I’ll be travelling to Burnaby twice a week (for referee training), so of course I’ve got mileage and gas and all that,” he said. “And there will be additional university expenses as well, so this money will be very useful.” Get a full list of scholarship recipients at www.bcsoccer.net.

Penninsula falls to Mustangs

Chilliwack Minor Lacrosse hosted its 10th anniversary tournament the last weekend of May, welcoming a full field of teams in the bantam and midget age groups.

The local Chilliwack bantam A2 overcame long odds to win gold in their division. The team came into the tournament with only nine runners, with two players relegated to the injured list. In their opening game, Chilliwack edged Nanaimo 6-5. The Mustangs doubled up North Okanagan 4-2 in game two, and two hours later bounced

Penninsula 10-5. Three wins earned Chilliwack a spot in the gold medal game and a rematch with Penninsula. Penninsula carried 16 runners into the game, but Chilliwack’s heart prevailed in a 6-4 win. The Mustangs relied heavily on Kale Graydon who was spectacular tending the net.

Three Fraser Valley Dragon Boat Club teams tested their mettle at the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragonboat Festival, held last weekend on False Creek in Vancouver. There were more than 180 local and international teams competing, making it the largest festival on the west coast. The Mavericks mixed team finished 50th overall in the recreational C division. Changes coming as BCHL celebrates 50

As the BCHL prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary, big changes are coming to mark the occasion on and off the ice. The league held its annual general meeting two weekends ago to plot the course for the 2011-12 season, one that will include the resurrected Chilliwack Chiefs.

BCHL grads take Calder The Binghamton Senators are on top the the American Hockey League universe and five BCHL alums have an accomplishment that will last forever. The Ottawa Senators top farm club earned a 3-2 road win over the Houston Aeros in Game 6 last Wednesday to claim the first AHL championship in team history. Former BCHLers getting fitted for championship rings include Geoff Kinrade (Cowichan Valley), Patrick Wiercioch (Burnaby), Colin Greening (Nanaimo), David Dziurzynski (Alberni Valley) and Derek Grant (Langley Chiefs). Greening and Kinrade each had a goal and four assists in the playoff run while Dziurzynski had three helpers. Grant had a goal and an assist and Wiercioch tallied one helper.

The league office is getting grief over a dozen rule changes that have altered the schedule, reduced the size of rosters and cut the number of playoff teams from 12 down to eight. Four teams from each conference will now qualify for the postseason. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There were some negative criticisms, but at the same time, the league is adamant that we are going to try it for a year and see what happens,â&#x20AC;? said Trail Smoke Eaters president Tom Garwryletz. The schedule for the upcoming season has been delayed a month, thanks in large part to

the late move of Quesnel to Chilliwack. Each team knows who theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll face and how many times theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll face them, but dates still have to be hammered out. On the ice, the league is finally considering implementing the fourman referee system adopted by the NHL, with each game having two officials and two linesmen. It will start on a trial basis with each team employing the system in about a dozen home games. However an ongoing shortage of referees will be an obstacle, says Gawryletz. Overall, the meet-

ing was one of the best Gawryletz has seen in years, and with a positive fiscal outlook, the next 50 years looks promising. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a very good year financially, money in the bank from operations,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think money-wise the league is in great shape.â&#x20AC;? The landscape has changed significantly since the Chiefs left the league following the 2006 season. But the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commitment to sending players on to post-secondary schooling has stayed strong. This past season, the junior A circuit set a record for scholarships by sending 113 players,

and counting, on to university hockey. At the professional level, the league has been well represented in the National Hockey Leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Stanley Cup Final. The roster of the Vancouver Canucks includes ex-Chief Jeff Tambellini and former Nanaimo Clipper Tanner Glass. Bostonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s roster includes former Langley Eagle Mark Recchi and ex-Coquitlam Express forward Milan Lucic. Chilliwack’s peewee AA Cougars battled visiting Mission to a 6-6- tie last Tuesday at Fairfield Park. Bailey Whitehouse got the start on the mound for the Cougars, allowing one run on two walks and two hits through two innings. Chilliwack’s offence started strong with stand-up doubles by Colin Kellington and Tyson Loewen and a clutch RBI by Reece Howden to give the locals a 2-1 lead. Strong pitching by Howden and a pretty double play by Kellington held Mission to four runs over the next four innings. Another double by Kellington, coupled with RBI’s by Shane Rutley and Howden, put the score at a 5-5 through six innings. Loewen took the mound to close the game in the seventh. Mission got three batters on base, but scored just one run. Kellington produced a diving catch at shortstop and Rutley tracked a popup to the fence to end the inning.

DENHAM Cecil

Cecil passed into the presence of His Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 9th, 2011 at Chilli- DENHAM wack General Hospital. One week short of his 85th birthday. He was born on June 16th, 1926 at the family home on Prest Road in Chilliwack. Cecil owned 2 family businesses in Chilliwack; Chilliwack Delivery and Brownies Fried Chicken. He worked for 10 years for the City of Chilliwack Parks Department. Between working at his businesses and the City of Chilliwack, he built 2 houses and had numerous renovation projects. Cecil enjoyed gardening and puttering in his yard and shop. He did some traveling. His biggest joy was being with his family, especially family occasions. Cecil will be dearly missed and remembered by his loving wife, Helen of 63 years, sons Grant (Cathy), Barrie (Marilyn), grandchildren Nickl (Andy), Cory (Tanya), Matt (Liz), Amanda (Dan), greatgrandchildren Kobe, Kyle, Carson, Jake, Kyren, Cypress and Nicolas, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Andy and Anna Denham, 2 sisters Lil and Bea, and 2 brothers Frank and Bob. A viewing for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, June 15th, 2011 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Henderson’s Funeral Home. April 18, 1934 to June 3, 2011 Leo has gone to his Savior in Heaven, Jesus Christ. While we are sad to lose his quick DUECKMAN wit and loving kindness, we are glad he has gone from the pain and suffering he underwent to paradise. He is reunited with many that went before him: parents, 2 nephews, and all but one brother. Leo had a great career with B.C. Hydro for 35 years. He went from a meter reader to the ofﬁce manager in North Vancouver. He and his wife Betty were married for almost 57 years and were active members of 10th Ave Alliance Church in Vancouver. They retired to Chilliwack in 1990 and enjoyed a 21 year vacation. Leo is survived by Betty, two sons, Dale (Vic), Brent (Connie); 4 grandchildren, Karyn (Ben), Heather (Evan), Barry and Holly (Tyler); 2 great-grandchildren, Lilli and Zarah; Brother and sister-inlaw, Ernie and Irene Taylor; Niece, Carmi (Grant) Wilson; Sisters, Mary, Agnes, Dora (Ed), Anna (Hans); Brother, Peter (Irene); Sisters-in-law, Luella and Louise; and many nieces and nephews. SCHUMAN Albert James

On June 03, 2011, Albert Schuman passed away at the Chilliwack General Hospital. Albert was SCHUMAN born at Oungre, Saskatchewan in 1922. He was the youngest in the family of Mary and Michael Schuman; a family of eight boys and two girls. The fam-

ily moved to Archerwill, SK in 1934 where Albert attended school and worked in the area until 1942 when he joined the Canadian Army. He was stationed in Regina, where he met his wife to be, Rachel. They were married December 25, 1943 at Rhien, SK. They then returned to Regina where Albert worked for Ashdowns Wholesale Hardware for a short while. He then worked as a ﬁreman for the Regina Fire Department. In 1945, Albert and Rachel moved back to the Archerwill district where they farmed until 1947. They then moved to Flin Flon, MB where Albert worked with Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting until he took early retirement in 1981. Albert and Rachel then began their retirement years in Chilliwack, BC. Albert enjoyed curling, Golfing and working with Rachel on their retirement home. They both enjoyed Chilliwack very much. Albert has been a resident of the Lynnwood Retirement Residence since 2004. There he made many good friends and enjoyed the friendly, social atmosphere. He will be sadly missed by his sons, Dale (Val) and Brian (Joanne); his grandchildren, Holly (Jeff), Kelly (Kevin), Tyler (Lindsay) and Kyle (Alesha); great-grandchildren, Dominic, Clinton, Tanyka, Tyson and Claire. He also leaves to mourn his brother George (Lil) of Flin Flon, MB and his close friend Hanni Holtel of Qualicum Beach, BC. Albert was predeceased by his wife Rachel in 2002, parents, Michael and Mary, brothers Henry, Raymond, Arthur, Walter Fred and Bernard as well as his sisters, Rose and Alice. A family funeral service was held from the Chapel of Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home 45685 Hocking Ave. Chilliwack. Interment took place in Chilliwack Cemetery with his sons and grandchildren as casket bearers.

1937-2011 It is with great sadness the family of Elizabeth (Beth) Smith announce her passing after SMITH an 18 month battle with breast cancer. Beth will be lovingly remembered by her husband George of 24 years and her children and their spouses: Dale Carr (Tammie); Jeff Carr (Barb) Kellie Carr (Dean Jimmie) and Darcy Carr (Carmen).
