Partnership promises better police response RCMP, Fraser Health work to help mentally ill in crisis Robert Freeman The Progress

couldn’t continue to do it.” The society does receive several in-kind donations from the community, and it uses sponsorships to offset the costs of performers. “But there’s a lot of stuff that we still have to pay for that requires cash,” said Firkus. “No matter how good a break we get, there’s still a lot of cash that’s required in order to make this happen.” It costs approximately $100,000 to put the air show on. Without the gaming grant, sponsorships would have to pay for the entire thing.

People with mental illness who are in crisis situations should find an improved response from Chilliwack police after a formal partnership with the Fraser Health Authority was formed June 20. RCMP officers in Chilliwack will now get training in how to deal with the mentally ill, and will have the expertise of a mental health nurse to advise them when they respond to mentally ill people in crisis situations. A list of “common clients” known to police and to local mental health officials will also be created so police officers have a better idea who they are dealing with and how best to respond. The mental health nurse won’t be available 24/7, but there will be a crisis line police can call for emergency consultations. “It’s not perfect, but it is a step in the right direction,” Stan Kuperis, manager of mental health programs in Chilliwack, said about the partnership. He said police and mental health professionals in Chilliwack already have a good relationship, but this program will enhance the ability of police officers to deal with someone who is “acting suicidal or obviously has a mental illness.” He said there are similar programs with police in Abbotsford, Delta and New Westminster. Chilliwack RCMP and mental health officials have been talking in the past year about a formal partnership “where we could provide a mental health nurse to provide some intervention” in crisis situations, Kuperis said. “It’s something we were wanting to initiate in Chilliwack,” he said, but the needed resources only recently came available to the Fraser Health Authority. RCMP Insp. Grant Wilson, operations officer in Chilliwack, said in a news release that the partnership creates “an improved service delivery model for assisting people in mental health crises.” “By utilizing a coordinated response with mental health professionals, the public will be better served,” he said. Attorney-General Barry Penner, ChilliwackHope MLA, said the program should result in fewer mental health clients winding up in police custody or in hospital emergency rooms.

Funding could ground Flight Fest Katie Bartel The Progress This year’s Chilliwack Flight Fest could be the last. The annual air show, in its 20th year, is in financial jeopardy after it was denied a government gaming grant worth over $30,000 for next year – approximately 30 per cent of the event’s overall budget. In the past, Flight Fest relied heavily on Bingo Affiliation Grants and Direct Access Grants to fund necessary costs including portable toilets, security, insurance, fuel, etc. But when the two grants were

rolled into one, and qualification guidelines were changed, Chilliwack Flight Fest no longer qualified. A letter notifying the Flight Fest Society their grant application had been declined stated heritage festivals and community fairs qualified, but dragon boat festivals, wine festivals, and Chilliwack Flight Fest didn’t. “It doesn’t say why we didn’t qualify,” said Ray Firkus, director with the society. “We’ve been trying to figure out where the line in the sand is and what makes a cowboy days or a local community heritage fair

qualify, and yet our air show doesn’t.” The air show was started by the air cadets 20 years ago as an open house to show the community what the local airport had to offer. It remains one of the only free air shows in Canada. “By bringing the community in here, people got to realize that everybody in this community is lucky to have an airport like this and we should all have some pride in it,” said Firkus. “The air show is an important part of the community. It would be a real shame if we

Mudslide survivor relives nightmare ride ‘I looked like the woman from the monster of the mud lagoon,’ says Debbie Hebert Robert Freeman and Kerrie-Anne Schoenit Black Press “I thought I was dreaming.” But in reality Hope resident Debbie Hebert was caught in the mudslide last Wednesday that saw up to 6,000 cubic metres of dirt and debris “whoosh” down the mountainside and spill over the eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway. Still shaken by her close brush with death, Hebert spoke to reporters in Hope last Thursday about her ordeal that started with a tree suddenly falling onto the highway in front of her.

She slammed on the brakes, and then her Dodge SX was hit by a wall of mud and rolled three times before it was caught and held by trees and bushes in the meridian. “I thought I was dreaming,” Hebert said. “It was very scary. I could hear big tumbling rocks above me.” “When the car stopped, I couldn’t get out,” she told reporters. “It was all black because of the mud everywhere.” Except for a light behind her, where the car’s trunk had popped open. “I undid my seatbelt, and I climbed out through the back,” Hebert said. “I made it out and I

could see all the cars on the hill backing up - and it scared me because I thought they were all leaving me.” She said when the mud burst through her car windows, it made a “whooshing” sound. All she wanted to do was get out. “I wanted air,” she said. “I didn’t want to suffocate.” When Hebert emerged from the Dodge, seen in many of the media photos taken that day, she was covered in mud from head to toe. “I looked liked the woman from the monster of the mud lagoon,” she said. “I was covered. You couldn’t even see my face.” Amazingly, Hebert was not seriously injured, and a Kamloops nurse stayed with her until emergency crews arrived.

“I feel lucky to be alive,” Hebert said. “I don’t know how I made it, I really don’t.” “I feel thankful, I feel blessed,” she said, “and I just feel someone was watching over me because I don’t know how I did that.” But Hebert doesn’t feel like testing her good luck, and she won’t be driving that stretch of highway again any time soon, she said. At least two significant mudslides have occurred in the same area, one in October, 2005 and another in July, 1997. And there’s no guarantee another won’t strike, despite best efforts by the B.C. government. “We live with a certain tolerance of what we consider normal risk,” said Kurt Edmunds, regional operations manager at the B.C. transportation ministry. “Whenever you

have highways and mountains, you have the potential for problems.” Last week’s mudslide started in the alpine area about 3,500 feet above the highway, apparently triggered by recent rain and snowmelt, and came sloshing down one of the creekbeds, which had apparently not been armoured or rip-rapped with large boulders. Edmunds said “fairly extensive” works had been done in the area since 2002, but a ministry spokesman described the challenge as being like a melting ice cream cone: you know it’s going to spill over the cone - but where? Meanwhile, ministry monitoring of the area has been “stepped up” and additional rip-rap works will be done, Edmunds said. rfreeman@theprogress.com twitter.com/paperboy2

Chilliwack sign bylaw ‘constitutionally suspect’ says BC Civil Liberties official Robert Freeman The Progress The BC Civil Liberties Association is asking Chilliwack and other Lower Mainland municipalities to review sign bylaws cited in the removal of anti-HST signs from city properties. “Municipalities are enforcing bylaws that will not survive constitutional challenge,” BCCLA president Robert Holmes said in a June 24 news release. He said a legal challenge would be “costly to citizens and taxpayers,” so the association is urging municipalities to “do the right thing” and redraft bylaws to comply with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz said the

city’s lawyer is reviewing the bylaw. But she stood by her earlier defense of the bylaw, which was cited when dozens of antiHST signs were removed from city property, including several outside City Hall. Gaetz said she still believes the city is on solid legal ground because the bylaw does not absolutely ban political signs, so it’s not infringing on anyone’s freedom of speech. The bylaw does require a $500 deposit to make sure the signs are taken down once the election, or, in this case, the referendum, is over, but it is refunded if all the signs are taken down. “It’s not fair to taxpayers,” Gaetz insisted, to make them pay for sign removal, whether they agree or not with the HST. But Micheal Vonn, the BCCLA’s policy

director, said the $500 permit fee makes the Chilliwack bylaw “constitutionally suspect ... right from the get-go.” The legal issue is whether the bylaw “impairs the rights in question,” she said, and the courts might view the permit fee even a refundable one - as a stumbling block to freedom of speech. “Right away, that (fee) takes a whole lot of people out of the running,” Vonn said. She said the Chilliwack bylaw - and others in the Lower Mainland - were drafted before the BC Court of Appeal struck down a sign bylaw last year in Vancouver that proposed a $1,000 permit fee. “The minute you start getting into those kinds of figures, it’s constitutionally suspect,” she said.

The enforcement of most municipal sign bylaws is also complaint driven, another no-no as far as freedom of speech is concerned. “It’s simply not enough that (a sign or slogan) gets up somebody’s nose,” Vonn said, to justify removal. The BCCLA doesn’t want to start a court fight, Vonn added, and she hopes “moral suasion” will convince municipalities to let the anti-HST signs remain until the referendum is over. In Chilliwack, Fight HST organizer Glen Thompson vowed he’d take the city to court for removing the anti-HST signs, but then NDP election candidate Gwen O’Mahony stepped into the fray and paid the $500 permit deposit.

by July 7. Results of the referendum may not be known until September. Voters are asked to vote ‘Yes’ if they want to eliminate the 12-percent HST and return to the combination of the five per cent GST and seven per cent provincial sales tax. They’re to vote ‘No’ if they want to keep the HST. The province, in an effort to rally more support to retain the tax, has pledged to lower the rate to 10 per cent by 2014. It will also send out additional one-time rebate cheques for low-income seniors and families with children.

News Two fishermen pulled from Fraser River as capsized canoe sucked under log jam Robert Freeman The Progress Two Fraser Valley fishermen are lucky to be alive, police say, thanks to two volunteers who helped pull them from the Fraser River after their canoe capsized Sunday near Gill Road. “This was ver y much a coordinated ef for t between the First Nations policing unit, our general duty members, and of course the two heroes involved,” said RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck. The two volunteers pulled the fishermen from the icy waters, just as their capsized canoe was pulled under a log jam by the river’s current. Neither fishermen had a lifejacket, and they had been hanging onto the canoe to stay afloat as it drifted about 10 kilometres from where it capsized near Gill Road. Police of ficers responding to the incident asked two fishermen at the Jesperson boat launch to use their boat, instead of waiting for the RCMP boat to arrive. “After 20 minutes of searching, the fishermen spotted the two men hanging onto their capsized canoe, heading directly for a log jam,” Wolbeck said. “These two men would likely not be alive today had it not been for the unselfish act of these two volunteers,” she said. Both fishermen were treated for hypo-

thermia at Chilliwack General Hospital and later released. Police are reminding everyone to wear an approved flotation device anytime they venture out on area lakes and rivers. “It is impossible to

predict when disaster may strike,” Wolbeck said, “and it is essential to plan for the unexpected.” She said the Canada Day long weekend was a busy one for RCMP in the Upper Fraser Valley.

“Several alcoholrelated of fences crammed Chilliwack’s detachment cell block, as well as many motor vehicle accidents both in town and on the highways,” she said.

10% IF HST REMAINS

Co-ordinated response for mental health issues

MENTAL from Front “A protocol like this could have been helpful,” Penner agreed, in the case of a 46-yearold Chilliwack man who died in police custody back in 1999. Phil Ferguson had called 911 telling the dispatcher he was hearing voices and thinking about suicide, and that he was “scared” because two mental patients in the Vancouver-area had recently been shot by police. However, Ferguson said he would “appreciate it” if the RCMP sent officers to help him, and he was eventually taken to the police lockup. But once there he got into a scuffle with an officer and suffered a cut on his head. He was taken to hospital where he died 18 hours later. Ferguson was reportedly trying to arrange a meeting with the local RCMP about police

ill in Chilliwack, including expansion of the 14-bed psychiatric unit at Chilliwack General Hospital to accommodate 16 patients, and the opening of a long-term, 20-bed rehabilitation unit in August. Although the unit will initially be used to treat patients from Riverview, once they “flow through” the unit can be used for Chilliwackarea patients, he said.

• The HST will drop from the current 12% to 10% in two stages – if BC doesn't go back to the 12% GST/PST. • The BC Government asked Ottawa to reduce the HST to reduce the cost to families, and now it is law. • 10% HST will save the average BC family $120 per year compared to going back to the higher 12% GST/PST. • Going back to the 12% GST/PST will cost BC taxpayers $35 million to hire 300 provincial tax collectors to set up a separate PST system in addition to the GST.

rfreeman@theprogress.com

• An independent report* found going back to the 12% GST/PST would negatively impact the provincial budget by almost $3 billion in just 2 years. This would likely result in increased deficits and/or reduced government services.

R AESIDE

Rude drivers never far They cut in without signalling, speed, tailgate, yak on their cellphones and blast their horns in anger. Lower Mainland motorists are a belligerent bunch. So says a new opinion survey conducted by Ipsos Reid for ICBC. According to the poll, 55 per cent of residents believe drivers in their communities have become less courteous over the past five years. Forty per cent said it’s about the same while three per cent thought drivers are more courteous. Most people surveyed (82 per cent) had encountered fellow drivers who were late in signalling or didn’t signal at all – the single biggest peeve cited in the survey. Seventy-one per cent reported being tailgated, 68 per cent said other drivers refused to let them merge or change lanes and half said they’d been cut off. But there were also the bad-mannered louts who yelled, swore, made obscene gestures, waved their arms or fists, flashed their lights menacingly, and even (let the road rage begin) stole parking spots. Who are these motoring miscreants, these behind-the-wheel warriors whose heated emotions can impair other drivers’ ability to concentrate and react on the road, thereby putting everyone at increased risk of crashing? Certainly not you... right? Along with drivers behaving badly, the poll also revealed an amusing disconnection: drivers in denial. While those surveyed gave their fellow motorists a “C” letter grade for courteous driving, they gave themselves a stellar “A” or “B” rating. In other words, most Metro drivers don’t believe they’re part of the problem. The late comedian George Carlin once said, “Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?” Next time you get annoyed in traffic, better give that mirror a second look. ~ Black Press

L OCALLY G LOBAL

Investigation only leads to more questions The heartbreaking image of a 15-year-old developmentally disabled girl sitting alone with the corpse of her mother for up to a week in their Chilliwack home is even more distressing when knowing how much the services and support system of the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) failed her so completely considering mother and daughter were long known to them. If not for concerned neighbours, the teenager too could have died. Where was the help they so desperately needed? The story, which broke in the media last fall, horrified and outraged people. And it opened up a Pandora’s box of issues about the inadequacy of bureaucratic care when both a child with multiple health complications and a mother with her own medical needs slipped through the support cracks.

The Chilliwack

Progress

In her recent report, Isolated and Invisible; When Children with Special Needs are Seen but not Seen, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, Representative for Children and Youth, said that “This girl’s struggling and eventually desperately ill mother – and Margaret a wide variety of support providEVANS ers – did not have enough focus on this girl.” The teen had faced serious health issues all her life. Born with Down Syndrome, she required almost immediate surgery to correct congenital heart defects. She had a variety of surgeries and procedures including tubes in her ears and eye re-alignment and she was treated multiple times for

infections. At age 13 her speaking and listening abilities were those of a three-year-old and she had significant behavioural problems that were controlled by strong psychoactive drugs. Meanwhile the mother struggled with poverty, health issues, personal problems, addictions and isolation that overshadowed the needs of her child. They were on a path to destruction. The disturbing fact is that it wasn’t as though the MCFD didn’t know about their plight. The department received its first child protection report about mother and daughter in 2006 and received another four subsequent child protection reports, including two in the last four months of the mother’s life. It was a travesty that the mother’s income assistance was cut off and the file closed. She had lost the use of her car which meant the

devastating loss of her two jobs. Where was the follow up to ensure the family’s financial stability? “Is this the only child in British Columbia we are letting down in this way?” asked Turpel-Lafond in her report. “Is this a unique circumstance, a cruel anomaly? Tragically, it is not. We know for example this child shared one of her support workers with almost 200 others. We know that in that worker’s office, there was great confusion about roles and responsibilities. And we are well aware of wait lists for therapy services and challenges in meeting the needs of children with special needs in our schools.” It wasn’t just that the case workers failed. It was the system. Turpel-Lafond urged in her many recommendations that what is desperately needed is clarity not only about who does what but about programs that require child

protection social workers, special needs workers, therapists, physicians and teachers to work together effectively with the child as the focus. The report said there should have been much more regard for family members and outsiders who had tried to help the child. People with credible information need to be treated with respect, listened to and their input carefully weighed without prejudice. One can only imagine the teen’s confusion and trauma trying to help her dead mother. When found, she was weak and dehydrated, unable to hear, and had developed stomach problems. Parking fine too excessive I parked on the parking lot at the old Safeway for five minutes and did not notice it was a pay parking lot. When I came out of the outlet store, I found the ticket on my car for $61.60 if paid within 10 days and $78.40 if paid after 10 days. I checked what the fees were, it costs $2 for all day parking! This is fraud. I could see paying $5 or $10; I made a mistake, okay. The best part written on

the reverse side: “To Contest This Notice: Please correspond in writing with detailed reasons for contesting this Notice. All correspondence must include any supporting documents along with your full name, return address, and violation Reference Number. means you will always pay the higher rate. If you do not pay within 30 days you will have a Collection Agency on your back! If this is legal, everyone should go out and buy a piece of land for parking. There were approximately 25 to 30 cars on the lot at the time, most of them with tickets. You cannot make money any quicker. Again, this is legal?

Dog grooming a worthwhile career option for students Yesterday while shopping in my favourite pet store I met a young lady who was working there part time. Upon learning from another employee that I was a groomer, she became quite interested and began questioning me with regard to my career choice. The girl said she had spoken to her high school teacher (you know who you are…) about attending grooming school but her counsellor had informed her that pet grooming was not a real career, it was better to consider it as a hobby. Seriously? I asked her what she thought her teacher would say if she knew that I had a much

larger income than she did? How about the fact that I am a business owner? What amazes me is how willing supposed educators are to pass judgement and perpetuate misinformation with little or no research or knowledge! Would this teacher be surprised to learn that some groomers spend thousands of hours studying breeds, anatomy, health, parasitology, dermatology, nutrition, first aid, as well as many other subjects? How about thousands of dollars on testing, both written and practical, in order to achieve the title of Master? Then we invest tens of thousands of

dollars on equipment. Did she consider that some groomers own fleets of mobile units, multiple retail outlets, schools, and employ others? Salon managers, instructors, receptionists, kennel staff, bathers, accountants… Some of my fellow groomers are authors, teachers, inventors and in former careers have been anything from social workers to corporate executives. They chose to escape their old jobs as drones and enjoy life in a happier, more relaxed environment. In Chilliwack we have a groomer who is a multiple award winning stylist, Groom Team Canada member,

instructor, and spokesperson. She’s had the opportunity to travel to Europe and Australia and to work in the film industry. All because of grooming. So “teacher,” perhaps you should do a little more research next time before you crush someone’s dream. The next time a student mentions wanting to work in the grooming industry, try not to envision a toothless, barefoot, fourth grade dropout hacking away at some defenseless canine with a pair of dollar store scissors and I’ll try not to picture you as a self important elitist.

Chilliwack is not my hometown, but it feels like it is. I was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan and spent most of my growing up on a dairy farm. After graduation I moved to Calgary for 15 years, then my husband was transferred to the coast and we made our home in Surrey. I moved out here as a single mom with my three kids almost 12 years ago. We loved Chilliwack immediately and my family has had a very happy life here. So I feel like I’m well qualified to work with new people coming to the area, as well as those who have been here forever, because I believe in this city. I think I’ve found a little piece of paradise and the wisest people know this to be true. Give me a call anytime for your complimentary market evaluation or if you know someone moving to town, pass along my name, because Chilliwack is my hometown now.

Buying a home is probably one of the most challenging (and expensive) purchases you will make. Once you decide that you definitely want to buy a property, you have to endure the stressful period of waiting for the seller’s response to your offer. So when you hear that the sellers have accepted your offer and are prepared to sign a contract, it’s only natural to feel completely elated. The house you wanted is now yours! Your Realtor congratulates you, and then gives you a reality check - the house is almost yours. You find out that there are several very important steps involved in transacting the sale of a home that are the buyer’s responsibility. Until all aspects of the transaction process are completed, it’s not a done deal. One of the most common subjects imposed on the sale of a property is the home inspection. Getting an inspection protects the buyer from discovering problems with the house after moving in. The purchase agreement allows a certain period of time for home inspections to take place, so don’t delay in scheduling the inspector’s visit. If defects are discovered that will require some repairs, make a few phone calls to get estimates from contractors.

Selecting the right Realtor in today’s market is a very important part of the buying or selling process. My business philosophy has always centered around building long term relationships with my clients. I’ve been in the real estate profession in Chilliwack and District since 1991. That kind of experience works for you because intimate market knowledge is key. A large percentage of my business comes from folks who have come back time and time again or referred family and friends to me. Ensuring the home buying or selling process is as simple and straight forward as possible for you is a priority. You can be assured I’m with you every step of the way. You need the right Realtor for the same reason you need the right Doctor, Lawyer or Accountant. As a team we’ll work through the buying or selling process together to make sure all your questions or concerns are answered along the way.

Ask your Realtor for references if you need repair estimates from local contractors. You may have to re-negotiate the purchase price if the defect is significant and was not disclosed (or discovered) prior to signing the contract. Home insurance is another obligation that must be arranged prior to completion. Lending institutions won’t issue a mortgage if the property in question is not covered by home insurance. Contact reputable home insurance companies, and compare rate quotes and plans. As a home buyer, you’ll be subject to requests from the lender for miscellaneous documentation to support your loan application. They may ask for additional financial data, and it’s wise to respond immediately with any documents the lender requires. Procrastination inevitably builds delay into the transaction. During the home buying process, your Realtor is there to provide you with information about your rights and responsibilities, and to keep you informed of impending deadlines, when the appraiser is ready to visit the home, for example, and when important contract dates are approaching. However, the more aware you are of the buyer’s role in advance, the better prepared you will be to do you part.

Open house Wednesday for south side library proposal The City of Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley Regional Library want your feedback on the preliminary design plan for the new library, proposed for the south side of Chilliwack. On Wednesday, July 6, the City and the FVRL are hosting an open house to

give residents a chance to view the design, ask questions and give input. The proposal for the new library is the result of a review of community needs and available resources. The working group has recommended that the new library be con-

structed on city owned property on Tyson road, between the Twin Rinks arena and Mount Slesse Middle School. The preliminary design has open and flexible space with

room to expand the building in the future as warranted. The proposed 9700 square foot building will allow not only more library space, but multipurpose space as well.

Community River action group awarded grant to restore fish habitat in Chilliwack River Valley Jennifer Feinberg The Progress A local stewardship group netted $4,000

from the Pacific Salmon Foundation to restore salmon habitat on the Chilliwack River at Ryder Creek.

Mudslides in the Chilliwack River Valley made the property uninhabitable and plugged up local salmon streams

with sediment two years ago, said David Lamson, president of Chilliwack River Action Committee (CRAC).

The local group in partnership with the Fraser Valley Nature Conservancy is ready to get started on the restor-

ative work at the site. Landscaping as well as a site cleanup is part of the plan. It’s on a riverside property donated earlier

this year to the Fraser Valley Conservancy for conservation purposes in perpetuity and it’s home to several species at risk. “We’ll be removing an old septic tank field and some concrete slabs,” Lamson said. Native species including some Douglas fir trees will be planted on the hillside to help stabilize the bank and prevent sediment from washing into the creek and choking eggs. The project will also remove invasive plant species that are crowding out the beneficial native plants that support the aquatic insects for salmon to feed on. Old sheds, and some fencing will be removed as the site used to house a mobile home and other buildings. CRAC will be contributing about $11,000 and other in-kind donations, to the habitat restoration project valued at about $27,500, he said.

Cascades and Spartans in hoops showcase Dan Kinvig, Black Press Ice is the most familiar sporting surface at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC), but for one evening early next year, hardwood will take precedence. It’s part of an ambitious plan unveiled on Wednesday by the University of the Fraser Valley athletic department to take university basketball to new heights in the Fraser Valley. On Jan. 28, 2012, the Cascades will host the Trinity Western University Spartans in a Canada West regular season doubleheader at the AESC. The UFV and TWU women’s hoopsters will tip things off at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s teams at 7 p.m. Holding a hoops showcase at the AESC – which seats just over 7,000 – represents a massive increase in scale for the Cascades, whose average attendance for home games

at the Envision Athletic Centre is numbered in hundreds rather than thousands. But organizers are excited about the event’s potential, and hope it will grow into an annual affair. “It has the potential to be great,” enthused David Kent, UFV’s sports information and marketing coordinator. “When it comes to something big like this, it piques everyone’s interest.” Kent is the driving force behind the initiative, and he boasts extensive experience launching large-scale events. Kent worked for the Carleton University athletic department in Ottawa before coming on board with the Cascades last year. At Carleton, he set in motion the Capital Hoops Classic – a game between the Carleton Ravens and the Ottawa Gee Gees men’s basketball teams at Scotiabank Place, the home of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators. The inaugural Capital Hoops Classic in 2007 drew 9,720 fans, well beyond expectations, and the event is now an annual fixture in Ottawa. “You had your fans who loved basketball, you had people who wanted to cheer on their school, and you had people who looked at it

and said, ‘Wow. Let’s try this,’” Kent said, explaining the Capital Classic’s runaway success. “One year, in a blizzard, we still had 9,000 fans. And we don’t usually get those out here (in B.C.). “I can’t see this failing, let’s put it that way. If we get 3,500 (fans), I’d be tickled pink.” Kent hopes to use the UFV-TWU game as a springboard to host a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national women’s basketball championship in the future. “I think we would be a prime candidate, if we had all our I’s and T’s dotted and crossed, to win a CIS national championship bid,” he said. The UFV-TWU basketball rivalry is particularly intense on the men’s side. In 2009-10, the Cascades earned two late-season wins over the Spartans to edge them for the Pacific Division’s final playoff spot. Trinity Western returned the favour in 2010-11, eliminating Fraser Valley in a firstround playoff series that went the full three games. The Spartans went on to win silver at nationals. TWU men’s coach Scott Allen said he’s a big fan of the concept of holding games at the AESC.

UFV’s Sam Freeman drives to the hoop against Lance Verhoeff and Calvin Westbrook of the Trinity Western Spartans. Freeman and the Cascades host the Spartans in a showcase game at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre in January 2012. JOHN MORROW FILE PHOTO

“I’ve been really jealous of the games that have gone on at Scotiabank Place with Carleton and Ottawa over the years, and seeing how big it can be,” Allen said. “I know we (UFV and TWU) are competing, but we’re really making each other better in the offseason by working hard and trying to compete

with the bigger schools, and I think we’re doing it.” “It’s nice to see the City of Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley support this, and showcase university basketball for the evening,” echoed UFV men’s bench boss Barnaby Craddock. “Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the Fraser Valley,

with tremendous talent coming through the youth levels. To see it all focused here in a big venue, I hope it’s a sign of things to come.” With both local basketball programs on the upswing, the event could set a new Canada West regular season attendance record. Research is still being done to nail down exactly what the

current record might be, but it’s believed that UBC’s War Memorial Gym, with a maximum capacity of about 2,800, would be the standard. Tickets go on sale at the AESC box office and at abbotsfordcentre.ca on July 22. Seats will be $15 each, or $20 for a spot in the student fan zones behind the baskets.

Letkeman makes the cut for Team Canada Dan Kinvig, Black Press Walking into the gym at the University of Toronto on Wednesday morning, Matt Letkeman experienced a thrill he won’t soon forget. He was handed a basketball jersey with “Canada” stitched on the front and “Letkeman” on the back, signifying he’d cracked the roster of the Canadian under-19 men’s national team after surviving a two-stage tryout process. On Wednesday afternoon, the 6’7” power forward out of Yale Secondary joined 11 of Canada’s brightest young basketball stars on

a plane headed across the Atlantic. Team Canada will play a tune-up tournament in Lithuania (June 25-27), in preparation for the FIBA U19 World Championship in Latvia (June 30 to July 10). “To have the opportunity to wear ‘Canada’ across my chest, it’s kind of surreal,” said Letkeman, who grew up in Chilliwack. “It’s something I’ve dreamed about, but it’s all happening so quick.” Letkeman’s own shock at bursting onto the national (and international) scene stems from the fact he considers himself a late bloomer. “I didn’t start seriously

playing basketball until Grade 10 – that was when I really developed a passion for it,” he said. “The first regional tryout I went to, I didn’t even know what a ball screen was.” Letkeman grew into a rugged inside force for the Yale Lions, earning first team allstar honours as Yale won the provincial AAA title in 2010. He parlayed that performance into a scholarship to the University of Calgary, where he was named Canada West rookie of the year for 2010-11 after starting 19 games for the Dinos and averaging 8.5 points on 50.3 per cent shooting from the floor.

Up until two days before the junior national team tryouts opened in Toronto, Letkeman was worried that a nagging hamstring injury would prevent him from attending. But he powered through. “Going in, my goal was to attack in the paint and finish strong inside, rebound strong and be aggressive,” he said. “I didn’t want to play outside of myself and outside of my game, and I felt like that’s what I did.” Making the junior national team caps a dizzying rise for Letkeman, who now finds himself playing alongside highly touted NCAA-bound players like Sim Bhullar, a

7’4” centre from Brampton, Ont. who’s ticketed for Xavier University, and Kevin Pangos of Holland Landing, Ont., a point guard headed to Gonzaga University. At the FIBA U19 Worlds, Team Canada is in a group with Lithuania, Croatia and South Korea. Canada’s best finish at the event was a sixth-place result in 1987, and Letkeman would love to eclipse that. “I want to win – do something that no one’s done before. Why not?” he said. “At the same time, I have no idea what to expect. The teams are going to be good – it’s the World Championships.”

For Letkeman, the only thing better than making his international debut for Canada would have been playing alongside Marek Klassen, his former high school teammate. Klassen, a point guard, just finished up a stellar freshman year at Point Loma Nazarene University, an NAIA program in San Diego. He was invited to the Canadian U19 tryout, but didn’t make the cut. “That actually hurt me a lot,” Letkeman said. “I didn’t see it coming. It’s tough – he’s my boy and everything, and I was really looking forward to having the opportunity to play with him again.”

UNGER Peter Aaron

Peter Aaron Unger, born April 4th, 1918, in New York, Ukraine, passed away peacefully UNGER on June 26th, 2011. When he was almost 9 years of age, he came to Canada with his parents and siblings. After a brief sojourn in Manitoba, the family settled in Coaldale, Alberta. Peter spent his growing up years farming before becoming a Conscientious Objector during World War II. During his time as a CO, he worked in various logging camps in BC. Following the war, the Coaldale Mennonite Church asked him to consider becoming a minister. Accepting the call, he was ordained in 1949. In 1955, he was asked to establish an English language Mennonite church in Calgary. This church is now known as the Foothills Mennonite Church. His pastoral career included churches in Brandon, Manitoba and Chilliwack, BC as well. In time, he took on the hospital chaplaincy at Menno Hospital in Abbotsford, BC where, for 12 years, he had the privilege of ministering to the aged and dying. He considered these years among the most cherished in all his years of pastoral duties. Eventually, his life’s journey brought him back to Menno Place as a resident. During that time, he assisted the present chaplain by continuing to visit the ‘old folks,’ leading Bible studies, and singing in a resident choir. Gardening and grounds maintenance also became a consuming passion right to the end of his life. Peter was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (1986) and his daughter, Heather (2008). He is survived by his children, Charlotte Wiens (Ernie), Eric Unger (Laura), Karin Martens (Dennis), Norman Unger, Tim Unger (Pearl), and Philip Unger, 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. We remember our dad as a person who was very committed to his Saviour, his faith, and his family.A viewing will be held on Thursday, July 7th, 2011 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm at Eden Mennonite Church, followed by a graveside service held at Little Mountain Cemetery at 1:30 pm. The Memorial Service will be at Eden Mennonite Church at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) or Missionary Aviation Fellowship of Canada (MAF), 264 Woodlawn Road West, Guelph, ON N1H 1B6 www. mafc.org.
