City paid Sanborn $104,473 in severance Robert Freeman The Progress Grant Sanborn, who is facing three counts of breach of trust by a public official, was paid $104,473 in severance when he left the employment of the City of Chilliwack in June, 2000. At that time, there was no mention of a severance agreement, or that Sanborn was leaving for any reason other than to pursue a career in the private sector. But in February, 2008, the city issued a statement that a former employee who had been “separated” from the employment of the city was under investigation by the RCMP for “possible criminal activity” 10 years ago. The matter had been reviewed at that time by a third party, then-mayor Clint Hames said in the statement, and the unnamed employee was “let go.” “The matter was deemed an internal staff issue and the employee was subsequently separated from their employment with the city,” Hames said. The employee was never identified by city officials on the advice of police and legal counsel. But in June last year, Sanborn, 52, was charged with failing to fulfill his public duty as the city’s approving officer on two occasions, and “willfully withholding” information from city council and the public on a third occasion. Former Chilliwack Mayor John Les was not charged by the special prosecutor brought in to investigate the allegations of improper land dealings. The charges against Sanborn have not been proved in court, and a trial is not scheduled to start until February, 2012. The three charges involve incidents alleged between Aug. 1, 1997 and Dec. 31, 1997 and between Aug. 1, 1994 and Feb. 28, 1999. The Progress filed a freedom of information request in September last year asking for any records of a severance agreement paid to Sanborn, and any documents of a review by a third party of his employment. Questions linger after boy hit on bike Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Jeremy Rice, 13, doesn’t remember the precise moment he was hit by a car and thrown off his bike. But he does remember stopping at the stop sign at Chilliwack Central Road and Upper Prairie Road, and looking both ways before trying to cross in the agricultural section of East Chilliwack. No one asked the youth if he had stopped at the stop sign, even though he was conscious and breathing before

being airlifted to hospital, said Jeremy’s father, Mark Rice. Also he noticed there were no skid marks on the roadway left by the westbound motorist, which could indicate there were visibility issues at the crash site. “I am still not sure why the driver did not see my son,” Rice said. According to the July 10 RCMP report, the westbound driver had the right of way, and was not at fault. The injured cyclist failed to stop at the stop sign, police said. But questions linger in Rice’s

mind and he has asked city staff to take a look at the intersection to determine if something can be done to make that corner safer. It’s located about a block from their home. “I followed the same path as the driver did travelling the speed limit at 60 km/hr and I can tell you it is a blind corner,” Rice said. The young cyclist told The Progress he remembered looking to his left and then to his right, and when he looked left again he had already started crossing Chilliwack Central, and saw the car coming toward

him before everything went black. He was wearing a bike helmet, but was sent airborne in the crash. The youth was treated at BC Children’s Hospital for a broken rib, partially collapsed lung, sprained ankle and stitches to his head. Rice was up and moving around slowly on crutches last week. Fortunately he’s doing quite well “all things considered” and is expected to recover from his injuries in the long term, says his dad. Continued: ANSWERS/ p5

Grow-op buster offered to local landlords Robert Freeman The Progress A private security company under contract to the City of Chilliwack is offering landlords a service to detect marijuana growoperations using a mobile heatseeking device. Brian Gladstone, CEO at Griffin Investigation & Securities Ltd., said the service, the first of its kind that he is aware of, will be offered throughout the Fraser Valley, Lower Mainland and Greater Vancouver. He said the $14,000 mobile FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red camera) is not as powerful as those that can detect human bodies, so privacy should not be an issue. “We’re not out there trying to see people in their homes or what they’re up to,” he said. However, the unit can measure

the “heat signature” of a rental property and detect the greater amount of heat required by a marijuana grow-operation. The inspection would normally take place from the roadside, at night, without entering the property. Gladstone said once a grow-op is indicated, the property owner can give the tenant two-weeks notice of a physical inspection of the rental unit. A marijuana grower would then likely quickly dismantle the equipment. “They’re not going to want their grow-op found,” he said. Property owners who buy into the service will also be able to advise prospective tenants that FLIR inspections will take place on a monthly basis. “The whole idea is to prevent (grow-ops),” Gladstone said. “I hope we never find one.”

The $75 fee for the monthly FLIR inspection is a small price to pay for the thousands of dollars in remedial work that landlords face when a rental property is used for a marijuana grow operation. Gladstone, a retired police officer, said his company came up with the idea after doing some research and deciding it could be a money-maker for the company and at the same time help protect landlords from illegal marijuana growers. “Landlords have no insurance to cover (the cleanup),” he said, which recently cost one Mission landlord $18,000. Griffin recently won a security contract with the City of Chilliwack, but operates in several other Lower Mainland municipalities with a staff of over 100 and nine security vehicles. rfreeman@theprogress.com twitter.com/paperboy2

Kids getting a little extra support Jennifer Feinberg The Progress A unique summer program for teens in Chilliwack shows there’s a correlation between positive reinforcement and success. The Youth Extra Support (YES) program meshes work experience and skills development, with mentoring and counselling, recreation, and community service. For local youth who didn’t manage to land a summer job or get registered in a summer day camp, YES has become a structured and valuable program, developed by Ann Davis Transition Society staff. It’s heading into its fifth year of operation with a solid track record. “For many of the kids it’s their first experience with positive feedback,” says YES program coordinator Steve Andrews, a child and youth counsellor for ADTS. “Giving them individualized feedback at the end of the day seems to make a huge difference.” Recreation and community service are key components and the activities are also learning experiences. A typical day will see the group starting out at the Ann Davis offices on Young Road for about an hour of skills development in a classroom-like setting. Then they’ll head out and do a couple of hours of community service work like painting, landscaping, trail-building or walking dogs for example. Thursday afternoon the kids were helping out at the Chilliwack Community Garden, which is being

developed on Wells Road by Food Matters Chilliwack and Chilliwack Society for Community Living. The garden plot has been plowed and the YES team was helping prepare the lumber to make a series of raised vegetable beds at the site. But just like in the real working world, if they’re going to be late one morning or too sick to come in, they have to phone in. “But if they have a bad day and head home a little early, when they come back the next day we tell them it’s fantastic they’ve returned.”

This year Chilliwack school district officials are allowing YES participants to put their work experience hours toward the 30-hour requirement in order to graduate from high school. The program is for 13- to 17-yearolds who may be struggling in some areas, and it helps them fill in the gaps over the summer holidays. “They experience personal growth in this program because we ask them to set goals. For some it’s just arriving on time regularly. “For others it may be becoming

work-ready or getting work experience, so we’ll talk about interview skills and stress management.” YES was made possible this summer with a $15,000 grant from Coast Capital’s Community Investment fund. Two groups of about a dozen kids each are signed up for three week sessions in July and then in August. “Sometimes kids return and go on to become junior leaders. Driver dies in hospital The 20-year-old driver involved in a collision with a Chilliwack RCMP cruiser last Tuesday died in hospital yesterday. Steve Genberg of Mission, a graduate of Mission Secondary and an employee of Mission Towing, had been in hospital in critical condition since the head-on collision between his Mustang and the marked cruiser. A 19-year-old passenger in Genberg’s car was seriously injured. The Abbotsford Police Department’s Major Crime Unit is investigating the crash, which occurred on the Lougheed Highway near Bodnar Road. “The Abbotsford Police Department extends its condolences to the friends and family of this young man from Mission,” said a press release from the APD, issued Monday morning. “The investigation into this tragic incident continues and our objective remains to conduct a thorough, comprehensive and complete examination of facts and evidence.” The police officer was treated in hospital and released.

City denies initial requests for Sanborn severance info SANBORN from Front The city denied both requests. “We would advise that we are no longer in possession of any records with respect to a review ... as any documentation was previously destroyed in accordance with the city’s records management policies,� the city clerk said in an Oct. 21 letter. Any severance agreements with Sanborn were denied “in their entirety� as an “unreasonable invasion of a third party’s personal privacy,� the city clerk said. The Progress accepted the city’s ruling on the review, but

appealed the decision not to release the amount of severance pay, arguing that it was public money and taxpayers were entitled to know how it was spent. City officials appeared to relent, with the assurance that no other details of the severance agreement were being sought, but later dug in their heels again, and an investigator from the Office of the Information and Privacy Commission was appointed. In June this year, the city finally relented and disclosed the severance paid to Sanborn. “We are compelled to disclose the amount of remuneration paid to Grant Sanborn,�

the city clerk said in a June 20 letter. “We would advise that the severance payment to Mr. Sanborn was in the amount of $104,473.� In a July, 5 letter to The Progress editor, investigator Al Boyd said he determined “it was not in keeping with the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act for the City to have refused to disclose (the dollar amount of severance paid to a former employee).� “I informed the City of my view and it did eventually agree to release a copy of the requested information,� he said. rfreeman@theprogress.com twitter.com/paperboy2

But Rice still felt compelled to visit city hall last week to get more information about that intersection. He was told by neighbours that the area was the scene of a fatal crash a couple of years ago. They thought something had fallen off a truck when they saw Jeremy thrown off the bike last Sunday. “The problem with that corner is that you cannot make a good decision until you’re out in the roadway,� Rice said. “If you’re trying to turn left or right, you can’t see the traffic coming from the eastern direction very well.� City officials said they made initial measurements and will be doing more at the crash site. The crash history at the intersection is considered “light� by officials, with one crash there in 2010 and two in 2009, including a fatal. But the fatal incident did not have anything specifically to do with the intersection, staff said. End ICBC monopoly The latest proposal from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia is another clear indication that the Crown corporation is reaching the end of the road in its ability to properly serve the province’s motorists. ICBC announced last week that it has notified the BC Utilities Commission that it plans to apply for a rate hike. “What’s happened really is the economy has rebounded a lot faster than most people have expected. That’s put more cars on the road.” ICBC spokesman Mark Jan Vrem told the media. He also pointed to an increase in body-injury claims as a result of wet weather. And while most, if not all, businesses would celebrate an economic rebound and additional customers, ICBC apparently sees it as a negative. However, that stance gives rise to a very simple solution: If ICBC is troubled by an increase in drivers, perhaps the time has come to end the corporation’s monopoly on basic insurance coverage. The latest news comes less than two months after Christy Clark’s Liberal government shot down ICBC’s proposal to increase insurance rates for drivers who receive as little as a single speeding ticket. While those measures seemed excessive, they were imminently more fair than the proposal that will be put before the BCUC. While the corporation has steadily increased rates on at-fault drivers, this latest proposed hike will take safe drivers along for the ride. The time has come to see if private companies can provide the service at a better value to the province’s drivers. — Black Press

Science offers window into canine health Judging from all the dogs strolling with their owners at the Harrison Festival of the Arts this weekend, folks are pretty devoted to ensuring their pets’ long, healthy lives. Generally, there is a guideline as to which breeds are at risk for certain diseases. But now there’s a new study that provides a rare and comprehensive look at the causes of death in more than 80 breeds. The study, which was recently published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, is bound to be helpful in developing breed-specific maintenance programs. “If we can anticipate better how things can go wrong for dogs, we can manage their wellness to keep them as healthy as possible,” said study co-author Dr. Kate Creevy, assistant professor with the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine.

Creevy and her colleagues looked at data from the Veterinary Database to find the causes of death of nearly 75,000 dogs spanning 82 breeds over a 20-year period from 1984 to 2004. They classified the deaths by organ systems and disease processes Margaret and analyzed the data by breed, age EVANS and body mass. “The study was the idea of my collaborator, Daniel Promislow, who is a geneticist,” said Creevy. “He studies aging in a variety of species and became intrigued with the fact that large mammals live longer than small mammals but that situation is reversed among dog breeds. He became curious as to why that might be and whether finding

differences in the causes of death based on the sizes of dogs might yield information that applies not only to dogs but also to people.” Scientists first mapped the dog genome in 2003 and have since compiled data on genetic variations for over 80 breeds. By combining that data with the study material, they could search for genes that influence the risks of diseases. Some of their findings surprised them. Toy breeds such as Chihuahuas and Maltese are known to have high rates of cardiovascular disease (19 and 21 per cent of breed deaths respectively), but they found that fox terriers also have high rates of cardiovascular disease at 16 per cent. Golden retrievers and boxers are known to have high rates of cancer (50 and 44 per cent of deaths respectively) but they

found that the Bouvier des Flandres actually has a higher death rate from cancer at 47 per cent than the boxer. They found that larger breeds are more likely to die of musculoskeletal disease, gastrointestinal disease and, most notably, cancer. Smaller breeds had higher death rates from endocrine causes. But breeding for certain traits may also increase the risk of disease. For instance, short noses in bulldogs could increase the risk of upper respirator y diseases because of the altered airflow. Respiratory disease, though, was also the most common cause of death for Afghan hounds and the Vizsla, which couldn’t be explained. “Sometimes the cause of death may be related to how we use dogs more than their genetic background,” Creevy said. “Treeing walker coonhounds have a high

proportion of deaths from infection.” Coonhounds are woodland hunting dogs in the U.S. southeast. The question becomes do these dogs have genetically poor immune systems or are they are higher risk because of the kind of environment they are exposed to? The study intriguingly raised more questions than it answered and their research continues in the search to understand breedbased genetic differences. “(We will be) looking at individual breeds and individual diseases,” said Creevy. “It is at this level that the work will become the most valuable to dog breeders and owners.” Learning about canine disease genetics could also help develop new strategies for diagnosis and treatment for human health.

Seniors need their vehicles Regarding the letter from Patrician Swen, “Licence rules unfair.” I cannot help wondering when ICBC got into the medical profession of diagnosing dementia. This is something only doctors can really determine. Just because someone cannot remember a set of words told to them, that does not prove them to be a bad driver. When you are on the road your concentration is on what’s

happening around you, not on what has been said. Being vigilant in driving is more important for preventing accidents. That’s why a person’s driving record should be taken into consideration for preventing mishaps and if necessary a road test. Also, there is another aspect. We live in a community of senior citizens. Most often they are the necessary volunteers helping any number of organizations

with their free time. They need to get around by themselves. These people are badly needed. If their driver’s licence is taken from them because nervousness made them forget words said to them, their usefulness is taken away, their health starts to deteriorate causing medical difficulties, and everyone loses.

‘Guardian angel’ restores faith As of today my faith in humankind has been restored. All too often we tend to focus on the evil in people and the decline of the human race. Partly to blame for that is the news we hear on TV, or what we read in the papers, which often points out all the horrible things that are happening around the world. Unfortunately, all the kind and wonderful things that happen to us in our everyday life doesn’t get noticed by many. Today I was shown that there is most likely just as much right in our world as there is wrong. As I stood in the Shopper’s Drug Mart parking lot I was in a panic; I had realized that I had left my keys, with my house keys attached, in the car and locked the door (I don’t have family in town, nor do I remember any phone numbers off the top of my head), when this unknown, but incredibly caring and generous lady became my guardian angel. She took matters into her hands and took care of absolutely everything. And all she meant to do was go for lunch. This kindness I will never forget, and I want to thank her once more from the bottom of my heart. Heidi Methorst

Looking for a clear spot on the beach I would like to comment on Harrison Hot Springs beach. This past Sunday my husband and I packed up a lovely picnic to spend the day at Harrison. When we arrived and went to find a nice spot on the grass I was so shocked at the repulsive sight. There was duck feces all over the entire grassed area and the sand leading to the water was literally covered in duck feces. You couldn’t let a child walk anywhere in that entire area. Putting down a blanket was totally impossible! We were so offended by the duck feces surrounding our chair that we couldn’t even find a clear spot to put our picnic basket down, never mind eat around that filth. Why aren’t they cleaning up this mess? This week is the Arts Festival in Harrison and I would be ashamed if I was the organizer of this event for people to come and see this disgusting mess! Timing can sometimes be difficult if you have to sell a home before you can buy another one. Most people need the equity from the sale of their first home for the down payment on the new house. In a situation where there are multiple offers, the chances of your offer being accepted are increased if your offer isn’t dependent on selling another house before you can make a move. From the point of view of selling your home, should you accept an offer containing a subject clause that makes the buyers’ purchase dependent upon selling their present home? Your decision should be based on several factors. Is their home being professionally marketed at this time? How long has it been on the market? If the house doesn’t sell, can the buyers take out a bridge loan or make other arrangements to get to the closing table? How important is timing for you? If you do accept such an offer you still continue marketing your home and can accept another offer (and void theirs) if their house has not sold. Therefore an offer that is subject to the sale of another property can be structured so there is no risk to the seller and the buyer runs the risk of their offer being “bumped” within a short period of time (24-72 hours), should you accept a second offer. Subject sales can work well for the sellers. The buyer is not in a position to ask for concessions on price or terms and may be able to get interim financing. Each situation is different, however, so your Realtor will go over all the terms before you accept or counter any offer.

Raising funds through chili The Birchwood and Terry Fox Foundation team up for cancer research Katie Bartel The Progress A walk was a challenge, but chili, seniors could do. When the Terry Fox Foundation contacted the Birchwood asking if the Chilliwack retirement home would be interested in hosting a walk, community relations coordinator Karen Corbeil was hesitant. “A walk is a bit challenging for us,” said Corbeil, noting the age of their residents range anywhere from 70 to 95. “And I didn’t know how much money we’d actually be able to raise from it.” But because the Birchwood was already hosting a block party, Corbeil suggested they tie in a fundraiser. And chili, she said, they could do. “The seniors love chili, they really do.” This Friday, July 22, the Birchwood is hosting a chili cook-off block party that is both a fundraiser and a meetyour-neighbours get together. “Many people in the

community know us as the Birchwood, the building, and a retirement residence for seniors,” said Corbeil. “What people may not be aware of is that we offer activities, social events, meeting space and support for all seniors in the community – even those who don’t live with us. We thought a block party would be a fun way for the public to get to know us and our residents.” So far three certified chefs have put their chili recipes into the ring: two from Chartwell Seniors Housing group and one from Best Western Country Rainbow Inn. “You can have a lot of fun with chili,” said Corbeil. Whether by using secret ingredients like maybe chocolate or pineapple or something even crazier, or by coming up with a totally rocking name like Hunka Hunka Burning Chili, which one chef has already laid claim to. Chili chefs will be dressed in theme to match their chili, and will be judged not only on the taste of their chili, but on showmanship as well. For a donation, guests receive a taster kit that includes cups for the chili, a hot dog,

drink and a ballot for the People’s Choice Award. As well, judges will accept bribes by way of donation to the Terry Fox Foundation. “Terry believed that every person could make a difference and we believe that too,” said Corbeil. “For our seniors, this is about getting actively involved in fundraising. They really do appreciate being able to help out.” A sentiment directors of the Terry Fox Foundation love to hear. In an effort to continue senior involvement, the Terry Fox Foundation created the Silver Fox Run last year, which has the foundation teaming up with retirement homes to help create new, innovative ways for fundraising that work for the aging population. Some homes have hosted movie nights, bake sales and book fairs. Some have had participants walking for months, logging their mileage, with a hope that by September, they’ll have clocked the full 10 km distance of the Terry Fox Run. In Chilliwack, they do chili cook-offs – all with the Terry Fox Foundation backing their efforts.

Donna White, provincial director of the Terry Fox Foundation said that because so many of Terry’s original supporters are now seniors, the foundation felt it imperative to create opportunities to allow them to continue their support if they so desired. “We didn’t want to leave anybody out,” said White. “That was Terry’s wish, that anything held in his name is open and inclusive for anybody to participate.” The chili cook-off is the first Terry Fox fundraiser in Chilliwack since the passing of Betty Fox last month. “I think Betty’s passing has maybe reiterated for people this needs to keep going,” White said. “For 30 years Betty has been the face and the driving force of what we do, and what a nice way to continue to not only honour her son but to honour her.” The Team Up for Terry Chili Cook-Off Block Party is from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday just outside the Birchwood on Patten Ave. Any restaurant interested in competing can contact the Birchwood at 604-792-8793 ext. 2015. kbartel@theprogress.com twitter.com/schoolscribe33

They have dragged away a staggering 65 tonnes of garbage off the banks of the world-class ChilliwackVedder River system. The Chilliwack/ Vedder River Cleanup Society has been dedicated to keeping the pristine riverside area clean since 2002, and is going strong this summer. The second river cleanup of the year is set to go with volunteers, groups and recreational users heading to the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve on Saturday, July 23 for the hour-long registration starting at 8 a.m. Since the weather has been so unstable organizers recommend that folks dress for rain with gum boots or waders being very helpful but not absolutely necessar y. Something’s cooking at Birdies Bakery Walking into Birdie’s Bakery and Cottage Catering is like stepping into the parlour of a country home. It has all the warmth and appeal of a bygone time, with the promise of something good coming out of the kitchen at any moment. Situated amongst the funky little shops on Mill Street, Birdies offers a cosy respite from a busy day of shopping. Tasteful decorated, with a black-tiled hearth, framed by a cream-coloured mantel piece, the shop offers both elegance and charm.

But the decor is not what people come for at Birdies. Taking centre stage inside is a display case filled with an array of bakery treats. Fashion ideas from Kathy’s Closet When Kathy Connelly was looking for a new name for her clothing boutique, “Kathy’s Closet” seemed the perfect fit. Not only does it describe the tight quarters she now occupies on Spadina Avenue, but whenever her friends are looking for something new to wear, says Kathy with a laugh, they often think of her closet. Kathy is still unpacking following her move from Wellington Avenue – where the shop was called Grapevine Clothing. It’s been a bit of an ordeal going from a 1,400-square-foot location to a space half that size. But the move has allowed her to further refine her offerings, ensuring that only the best items are available to her clients. Kathy’s Closet is a consignment store – a very discriminating one. The clothing must meet a couple of criteria, she insists. It must be fashionable, and it must

meet a certain standard for quality. For her customers, that means they’ll find quality clothing at reasonable prices. It also means the fashions they’ll find at Kathy’s are not what they’d find off the rack at the nearest outlet store. “It’s like a treasure hunt,” she says enthusiastically. Her stock is drawn from fashions from a number of sources. People might be looking to refresh their own wardrobe. They might have been given something that doesn’t fit quite right, or is the wrong colour. Or maybe they’ve just got too many dresses filling up the closet. They bring the clothing to Kathy, and she shares it with her customers. It’s the perfect way to recycle “previously loved” clothing, she says with a laugh. Kathy is no stranger to fashion. Community Rotarians honoured with Paul Harris Fellowships Two Chilliwack residents were recently honoured at a Chilliwack Mt. Cheam Rotary Club dinner by being awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship. Matthew Redekop and Ena Vermerris were chosen as recipients in recognition of the exceptional service that they provide either globally or locally. Matthew Redekop works with Hope International and his dedication to the global community is exemplary. Partnering with the Chilliwack-Mt. Cheam Rotary Club, he’s worked on a variety of projects including a water supply project in Ethiopia, providing clean drinking water and chickens in Cambodia, helping reforest areas in the Dominican Republic and working to provide funding for neighbourhood care points in Swaziland. “These initiatives have resulted in a dramatic improvement in living conditions for thousands of people living in poverty. Three of our club members travelled to Cambodia in 1996 to see first hand the effects of our partnership and the work that Matthew is involved with and they were suitably impressed,” noted committee member,

Rick Chappell. While Redekop works with people in poverty, Ena Vermerris deals with Chilliwack’s abandoned, unwanted and unloved pet population. Vermerris was an accomplished nurse but after her retirement, decided to dedicate her life to our four legged friends, especially

cats. Along with volunteers, she started the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven and today the Safe Haven is a sanctuary for cats, many of whom have lived through some horrific situations. Some are adopted and go on to enjoy a loving home while others can’t be adopted given that they

are extremely fearful and apprehensive given their previous circumstances. The Safe Haven also runs a successful community spay and neuter program which has helped reduce the unwanted cat and dog population. “When I retired, I vowed that I would devote the rest of my life to the cats and

that’s what I plan to do,” she said. The Chilliwack Mt. Cheam Rotary Club has started its new Rotary year with Dave Sliman as its president. Sliman, along with an energetic board and dedicated Rotary members are looking forward to another successful Rotary year.

Smyl hires ex-Chiefs to fill coaching vacancies The Chilliwack Chiefs have dipped into the past to fill their coaching staff of the present, bringing four ex-Chiefs back into the fold. General manager and head coach Harvey Smyl announced the hiring of his assistant coaches Monday morning; Doug Ast and Brandon Fleenor and Rob Bruni. Also coming on board, Paul Nicolls as the strength and conditioning coach. All are current Chilliwack residents, helping Smyl partly accomplish his goal of giving the team local connections. Ast had a tremendously successful playing career with the Chiefs, and he remains the only player in franchise history to be captain for two seasons (1992-1994). During the 1993-94 campaign he recorded a whopping 55 goals and 130 points in 51 games. That was Smyl’s first year as head coach, with the team finishing 28-28-4. Ast went on to a hockey career spanning 13 seasons. He played university hockey at the University of British Columbia before moving on to pro stops in the East Coast Hockey League (Wheeling Nailers), American Hockey League (Syracuse Crunch) and now-defunct International Hockey League (Long Beach Ice Dogs and Manitoba Moose). He twice attended training camp with the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, and the diminutive forward even spent three seasons playing professional roller hockey, suiting up for the Vancouver Voodoo and Los Angeles Blades of the now-defunct Roller Hockey International league. But Ast’s greatest hockey accomplishments came overseas, playing for two Deutsche Eishockey Liga (German Ice Hockey League) teams. Ast crossed the pond in 2001, playing two

seasons for the Iserlohn Roosters. In 2003-04 he signed with Ingolstadt ERC, spending the next six seasons as a Panther. Ast played in the Spengler Cup in Davos Switzerland in 2008. Following his retirement after the 2008-09 season, the Panthers raised his No. 18 jersey into the rafters at the Saturn Arena. “He’s had a ton of onice success and boasts strong leadership and communication skills,” Smyl noted. “He is very intelligent and enjoys teaching.” Fleenor is regarded as one of the most popular players to ever wear a Chiefs jersey. Fleenor spent three seasons in the BCHL, starting with the Langley Thunder before moving home. The big blueliner was a Chief between 199799, playing 87 regular season games for the franchise. During the 1998-99 season he played 56 games and amassed 44 points and 191 penalty minutes. Fleenor went on to six years of pro hockey in four different leagues. His last season was 200405 with the Motor City Maniacs of the United Hockey League, playing alongside NHLers Chris Chelios, Kevin Hatcher and Sean Avery. Fleenor’s been back in Chilliwack the last five years coaching peewee and bantam AAA with Chilliwack Minor Hockey. “I have so much respect for the Chiefs ownership group, and to be able to coach with Harv will be unbelievable,” he said. “Dougie, Robbie and Paul are great guys and I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with them.” Nicolls returns to the Chiefs for his second tour of duty as a part of the coaching staff. He was an assistant for Smyl from 1998 to 2000, helping the team to a bronze medal at the 2000 Royal Bank Cup in Fort MacMurray, AB. Nicolls played two seasons for the Chiefs from 1990-92 and was

a teammates of Ast. His playing career didn’t go beyond junior, but Nicolls stayed in the sport as an official, reffing five years in the pro ranks. In recent years, the 36-year-old has focussed his attention on personal training, opening the Xceed Training Center in Chilliwack (www.

xceedtraining.com). Nicolls graduated from the Institute of Integrated Nutrition in 2011 and Smyl says he will fit perfectly into his role. “Paul’s playing and coaching experience provides him invaluable knowledge as a personal trainer,” he said. “He understands what

a player needs to do to play at this level.” Bruni will be entering his ninth year as a goaltending coach for the Chiefs. As a player, Bruni spent five seasons stopping pucks at the junior level for Prince George, Abbotsford and Langley. Bruni is the owner/ operator of Bruni 5

Enterprises, a flooring contractor in Chilliwack. “Having the Chiefs back in Chilliwack is amazing and being able to work with the coaching staff Harv has put together will be awesome,” he said. Smyl sees Bruni as a perfect fit for his coaching staff.

It is 14 years since we lost our daughter and sister. At the time of her death in July 1997, Cathy was on staff at the University of Western Ontario, teaching French Literature and completing her Ph. D. thesis. She received her B.A. from Queen’s University where she was very active in the French Department. For 2 years she was co-editor of the departmental magazine “The Frontenac”. CARROLL Peter Russell

May 30, 1936 - July 15, 2011 Peter passed away and went to be with his Lord after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Peter is survived by his loving wife Marguerite, his children Mike Carroll and Liz Enns, Tim Carroll and Wendy Degroot, Rod Carroll, Shaun and Danielle Carroll and grandchildren Ashley Carroll, Tyler Carroll and Brandon Kahl. Peter was born in Calgary, Alberta and developed a love for trains early in life as his father worked for CP Rail. He also enjoyed playing football as a youngster. At the age of 24 Peter joined the Canadian Armed Forces and shortly thereafter, he met Marguerite at a Catholic youth function. They began their life together and over the years, with their sons,lived in Germany, Calgary, Regina and Chilliwack where he retired from the forces. After that he worked for The Bank of Montreal and The Commissionaires. Peter loved to spend time with his family. He liked to garden and collect model trains and was an avid sports fan. He was known by friends and family for his trademark sense of humor. The family would like to express their thanks for the compassionate care provided by the staff at The Abbotsford Regional hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements will be held Thursday, July 21st at 11:00am, St Mary’s Catholic Church, 8909 Mary Street, Chilliwack.

Ed passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at the age of 76 years. He was born on HILTS August 15, 1934, in Chilliwack to parents Hope & Henry Hilts. He is survived by Ruth, his loving wife of 56 years, as well as his children Dennis (Karen) Hilts, Dean (Marie) Hilts, Dawn (Len) Rollins, and Deanna (Randy) Hilts-Knudsen. He is also survived by his sister Dorthy Plank, and brother Ron Hilts, eight grandchildren; Morgan, Mathew (Crystal), Clayton, Christopher, Stephen, Jennifer (Jordan), Kevin and Julia as well as three great grandchildren; James, Lily, and Jasper. Ed owned and operated Trimen Blueprinting & Sales from 1975 until he retired in 1997 when he sold the business to his son. He was a long-time member of the Surrey Chamber of Commerce. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 23rd 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the chapel of Henderson’s Funeral Home with Brenda Janzen officiating. Eileen Smith passed away on July 9th 2011 at the Chilliwack Hospital at age SMITH 85 years. She was born on July 25th 1925 in London, England. Eileen worked as a secretary at various doctor’s offices and was also employed with the Royal Navy (WREN Aircraft Mechanic). She graduated high school in 1942 and was enlisted with Royal Navy (Fleet Air ARM (WREN) from 1943-45. Eileen met her husband Frank when attached to sister Aircraft Squadrons (Naval) at Crail, Scotland. They married on October 13th 1945 in London, England. Eileen will be remembered by her husband of 65 years, Frank, and son Michael N. Smith. Also survived by her sisters Rose Pearson and Irene.
