Welcome... The Chilliwack Cultural Centre is a bold, beautiful new building with stunning architecture housing two unique performance venues, an art gallery, music instruction studios, arts and crafts studios, meeting rooms, and offices. It is also the new home of the Chilliwack Academy of Music and the Chilliwack Community Arts Council. Community partners in the project include The City of Chilliwack, the Chilliwack Visual Artists Association, and the Chilliwack Players Guild. The Centre is a $22 million cultural facility located on City-owned land, between the Leisure Recreational Centre and Evergreen Hall. The size and scope of the venue were designed to suit the needs of the community and the potential market in Chilliwack, as well as to complement existing facilities. The Centre’s Main Theatre is a proscenium arch auditorium with exceptional emphasis given to audience comfort and performance support. The theatre will be the host to the Chilliwack Arts & Cultural Centre Society’s 2010/11 Season, as well as productions presented by the Chilliwack Community Arts Council, the Chilliwack Players Guild, and sensational shows from national production companies throughout the Season. Patrons are sure to enjoy the Theatre’s first seven rows arranged as continental seating, boasting abundant leg room. Regular seating is designed for the back half, allowing for six aisle seats per row and three designated wheelchairs areas with impeccable sightlines to the stage. The Centre is proud to have assisted hearing systems available for those who have difficulties hearing.

SING OUT, LEAP UP, MOLD TOGETHER AND EXPERIENCE ART Made possible by the Chilliwack Rotary Club’s $100,000 donation, The Centre’s Rotary Hall Studio Theatre is a ﬂexible “black box” space with retractable seating for 164 audience members. This room is sure to become a community favourite venue for corporate functions, private celebrations, multimedia presentations, public announcements, educational events, and much more. The Centre’s Grand Opening week will be the commencement of the Rotary Hall, with Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra & Chorus’ The Last Rose of Summer and “Fringe God” TJ Dawe performing Lucky 9 the following night. When it is time to put on the glitz, performers have access to seven dressing rooms, located behind the two theatres. Maybe it’s the inspiring scenery or the relaxed Fraser Valley lifestyle, but Chilliwack is blessed with an impressive array of phenomenally creative people: painters, sculptors, jewelers, potters, weavers, glass blowers, wood workers, photographers, and designers. Finally, with great anticipation, Chilliwack now has a space speciﬁcally-designed to showcase the talents in our community and beyond. The Chilliwack Art Gallery is a 22 foot high display area with space for free-standing 3-dimensional pieces and will be programmed by the Chilliwack Visual Artists Association. The Grand Opening of The Gallery takes place on Friday, September 24th and the Gala Opening Show will run through to October 30th. The exhibition will feature artists of distinction who

reside or have lived in the Chilliwack area. With 21 music instructional studios, Chilliwack is now equipped to teach vocal and instrumental lessons to potentially 1,000 students under one roof. The Chilliwack Academy of Music runs 18 of these studios and is truly looking forward to having their staff instructors conduct lessons in a central area. In the past the Academy ran satellite studios in private homes because of lack of space within the previous building. “Having all Academy instructors under one roof allows for closer rapport and will create a great collegial atmosphere,” comments Academy of Music Principal Graham Yates, “As well, students are sure to beneﬁt with crossdisciplinary activities, such as the development of new performance groups, classes, and community opportunities.” Within the 21 studios, there are two duo studios for teaching with two grand pianos, two small group studios, and a percussion studio, as well as the Wagner Appliance Choral Studio and Locks Pharmacy Toddlers Studio. Grand pianos have been moved into nine of the studios, made possible by Academy supporters at the last two Dickens Dinner Gala events, as well as the equity in the sale of the previous Academy home. The Chilliwack Academy of Music plans to enhance current enrolment by developing programs to reach new demographics including; advanced students, pre-professionals, and postsecondary students. Want to plunge your hands in mud and create a functional dish, or swirl colours together

to capture a glorious sunrise or maybe organize your photographs through scrapbooking? These activities and many more can now take place in the Community Arts Council’s new arts and crafts studios located throughout The Centre. The Arts Council intends to offer a variety of arts courses/programming, as well as performances in the main Theatre and Rotary Hall. The Clay Studio is equipped with ten electric potter wheels, a damp room, dry room, and glazing/ kiln room. The Fabric Arts Studio includes a dying room and will provide space for weaving, spinning, crochet, knitting, quilting, batik, and sewing. Moving upstairs to the Crafting Room, the space offers crafting and art lessons for all ages, including classes exploring mixed media, water-colour painting, mosaic creations, as well as seasonal workshops. Sharing a spacious waiting room, the Fine Arts Room is located across the hall and will be programed for painting and drawing classes. Arts Council instructor, Sue Schellenberg, is thrilled to manage the new Clay Studio, “Chilliwack has needed a clay studio for so long. This will be a place for ceramic artists to congregate, learn from one another and introduce the art form to more in our community. Chilliwack Community Arts Council Are you ready to explore your creative side? The Chilliwack Community Arts Council is offering tons of fun and crafty classes this Fall for the artist in everyone. Step into the spotlight! Youth Theatre is back by popular demand, and we have expanded to offer classes for teens, as well as kids. Theatre is a fun way to raise conﬁdence and make new friends while learning the basics of auditioning, improv, and role playing. Classes will end with students performing their work for friends and family. For those that shy away from the limelight, but love to watch, we are offering a Film Appreciation class for adults that will take students on an in depth tour of the “Golden Age” of Hollywood. Films will be followed with a group discussion focusing on ﬁlm history and theory. Get ready to show some moves with one of our exciting dance classes. In Bhangra you will learn the basics of this Indian folk dance, which is high in energy and full of fun, upbeat moves. In our Latin Dance class you will feel the passion and rhythm of authentic Latino dances in a fun and friendly atmosphere, where no partner is required. Our longest running class: Middle Eastern Dance is back again to teach you the art of belly dancing in a total body workout that engages the mind and spirit. If dance isn’t your thing, try your hand at

one of our painting, drawing, or digital art classes being offered for kids and adults: Watercolour Painting, Mixed Media, and Digital Photography. We also have Digital Photo Editing for adults, plus Anyone Can Draw and 3D Computer Animation for kids. Wanna get even more hands on? We have a great selection of craft classes including Mosaic Creations for both adults and kids, and a variety of seasonal Children’s Craft Workshops: Recycled Lunch Containers, Halloween Lanterns, and Christmas Gift for Teacher. For the fabric artist we are offering Beginners Weaving: 4-Harness Loom, Toe-Up Socks, workshops such as Temari Balls and Kumihimo Braiding, as well as Simple Stitching for kids, where they can learn the basics of hand stitching and embroidery. If you’re not afraid to get a little messy, we have a great variety of hands on ceramic arts classes including Wheel Throwing 1 and 2, Hand Building 1, and Kids Ceramics. There will also be Santa’s Workshops, which is an exciting hands-on experience that provides participants with the opportunity to create functional objects, perfect for Christmas gift giving! Chilliwack Academy of Music Science is proving what parents and educators have always known: music makes you smarter. This is especially true for young children as a musically rich environment early on improves life skills and opportunities later. But the beneﬁts of music study don’t end when youth does: no matter what the age, music lessons improve quality of life by stimulating and challenging the brain to learn new things. That’s why the Chilliwack Academy of Music is thrilled to offer lessons and programming to all levels, styles, abilities and age: from newborn to senior. The Academy’s 21 music instruction rooms at the Cultural Centre provide the facilities for private lessons, group classes and performing ensembles to take place. The Academy is pleased to announce two new classes: Kindermusik Family Time and a Suzuki “PreTwinkle” class. Family Time involves the whole family, who register as one unit centred around a preschool member. The 45-minute classes include a “Family Jam” where everyone learns to make music together. Suzuki “Pre-Twinkle” is a great way to prepare for violin lessons. Aimed at 3- or 4-year-olds with an attending parent, this fun group class uses songs and games to teach basic musical concepts like rhythm and pitch, as well as the foundation for good posture and technique as a string player. These exciting classes are the Academy’s newest additions to its established Kindermusik and Suzuki programs. Mark your calendars to come to The Centre on September 20 to 24th! During the Grand Opening week, the Academy will offer free demos of the above classes, as well as tours and demo lessons with instructors. There will also be a special performance put on by the

instructors and an “Instrument Petting Zoo.” The Academy couldn’t be more excited about their new home which allows it to meet the growing demands of our community for high quality music instruction and programming. The choreography combines traditional dance movements and drumming, interpreting traditional themes and subject matter from the Eﬁk and Ibibio tribes of south-eastern Nigeria. Founded by Maobong Oku from Nigeria, Kokoma is made up of sons and daughters of African Heritage. Together they promote cultural awareness and greater understanding for the sacred African culture through traditional African songs and an explosion of high energy dance and drum performances. Audiences will be brought to their feet as they too feel the rhythm of the drums and dances, experiencing ﬁrst hand that art is not separate from daily life but rather an expression of life.

Made up of four guys from across Canada, The Fab Fourever is the Beatles tribute band that leaves audiences stomping, clapping and screaming for more! The show transports audiences back to The Sixties, for an enjoyable romp through the greatest pop music catalogue the world has ever witnessed. The Visual Arts: will inspire, challenge, tell a story, share an experience, offer a new perspective, make a statement, and in so doing, educate. The stage is set, and for the visual artist in Chilliwack the grand opening of the Chilliwack Art Gallery at the new Cultural Center, the show is on. The Chilliwack Visual Artists Association is honoured to curate the Opening show and exhibits into 2011. The Association is a not for proﬁt volunteer organization with a current membership of 70, open to all artists and mediums. The opening show encompasses works from CVAA members as well as many artists from the wider community. For this opening show artists must live or have lived in Chilliwack in order to submit their work. The theme celebrates the people, history, culture and/or the natural environment of Chilliwack. As with any production countless hours of planning have gone into this exciting event. The planning started in January with the distribution of the Call for Entry to twenty publications out lining the theme and criteria. The work was catalogued and divided into various media: oil, watercolour, and acrylic paintings, mixed media which includes printmaking and pastels and textiles, photography, pottery, glass and sculpture. In June the selection panel met to determine out of 200 artworks the foundation of this dynamic show. Dorothy Kostrzewa, Ron Denman, and Marian Dyck, each having worked tirelessly in the cultural ﬁeld in Chilliwack, jumped at the opportunity to do this important work. The selection was anonymous, with the artist’s identity hidden from the panel. Each distinctive work, while following the theme, spoke for itself. Many more works were submitted

than space to exhibit. A beautiful 16 page colour catalogue of the works featured in the opening show will be available for purchase at the cost of $5.00, in the gallery. Have you ever been to an opening reception at an art gallery? Now is the time! Come and explore inspirational artwork at the new Chilliwack Cultural Centre’s Gallery. The “Gala Opening Art show” is the inaugural show at the new Chilliwack Art Gallery and will showcase artwork from artists in our Community. This dynamic show starts September 20th and runs to October 30th, with the Opening reception, Friday Sept. 24th - 7:00- 9:00 pm. It features the artwork of 58 prominent Chilliwack artists who responded to an extraordinary call for entry back in May. The selection panel carefully sifted through over 200 items of various media: painting, photography, mixed media & three dimensional items to come up with 65 pieces for display. The theme celebrates the people, history culture and/or lifestyle of our community along with the natural and/or physical environment that surrounds us. Coming up in November, an international cultural exchange with the 10th Annual “Hands Across The Paciﬁc” a collection of unique medias of artwork from artists from Japan, China, Korea, Mongolia and Canada. Opening reception is Saturday Nov 13 1:00 to 3:00 pm and this exhibition runs till Nov 27th.
