But majority in BC vote down the tax Jennifer Feinberg The Progress A majority of Chilliwack residents bucked the B.C. trend and voted to keep the HST. But the Yes side won overall, with 54.73 per cent voting to get rid of it. “My first thought was one of relief, that not all elections could be bought,” Gwen O’Mahony said. Local Yes campaigners were jubilant on Friday. O’Mahony, along with Glen Thompson, and Clive Edward led the Fight HST Chilliwack side. She called the results, “a wonderful showing of democracy.” It was mainly the “corporate elite” who stood to gain from holding onto the Harmonized Sales Tax, O’Mahony said. Many people were outright angry with the way the HST was introduced by the BC Liberals, and with the No side ads. The local Yes campaigners were “sitting on pins and needles” awaiting the results Friday, which were extremely close in both local ridings, she said. In Chilliwack, 9,949 people voted No (50.97%), while another 9,572 said Yes to extinguishing the HST (49.03%). While in Chilliwack-Hope it was even closer with 9,118 on the No side (50.35%) and 8,991 voting Yes (49.65%). “We had limited resources, but the No side’s budget was apparently unlimited as evidenced by the ads that ran during hockey games. That’s an expensive block of ads to purchase, and we still won,” O’Mahony said. “The problem was it was a tax shift, one that moved the tax burden onto the shoulders of the working class.” Continued: VOTE/ p4

A hearty tomato-vegetable soup was bubbling away on the stove Monday morning at the Chilliwack Salvation Army soup kitchen. The fresh ingredients came from a huge pile of veggies donated by Plant A Row Grow A Row growers from Food Matters Chilliwack. Gardeners dropped off 637.5 pounds of locally grown produce at a central site in Chilliwack Saturday to help feed the hungry at the local
food bank and soup kitchen. “We were just staggered by the total of this donation,” said Ian Pratt, community ministries coordinator for Chilliwack Salvation Army on Monday. “It’s an awesome contribution by a community that is willing to pull together and help out this way.” Just harvested Grow a Row items ranged from potatoes, carrots, beets, parsnips and turnips, to swiss chard, squash, beans and kohlrabi. Virus may be ‘smoking gun’ in sockeye collapse Jeff Nagel Black Press Salmon farmers have agreed to provide fish samples to federal biologists who are investigating a newly detected virus they suspect is linked to the steep decline of wild sockeye. The industry had previously refused to cooperate but four major aquaculture companies have now relented, the Cohen Inquiry heard Wednesday. Dr. Kristi Miller, a genetics researcher with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) in Nanaimo, said she wants to com-
pare virus levels in wild sockeye with samples of farmed Atlantic salmon at various life stages – including juveniles before being placed in ocean net pens as well as later, when wild sockeye are passing the farms off northern Vancouver Island. Miller testified she found wild sockeye salmon with a particular genetic signature are 13.5 times less likely to return to reach their spawning grounds than ones without the signature. She said a parvovirus recently identified appears to be the likely culprit, but agreed with another DFO biologist that more research
is needed to prove if it is actually infectious and causing lethal disease. Miller said the virus “could be the smoking gun” that explains the premature deaths of millions of sockeye in recent years although another DFO researcher, Dr. Kyle Garver, said it is “pure speculation” to read too much into the findings yet. Miller maintained she believes some pathogen, likely a virus, is harming salmon before they enter the Fraser River and contributing to an extremely high pre-spawn death rate. “Fish were already compromised
before they entered the river,” she said, adding that proves river conditions alone cannot explain the sockeye decline. Tests of farmed salmon may not bring back conclusive results on their potential role in time for the inquiry to factor them into its findings. But under cross-examination by a lawyer for the salmon farming industry, Miller confirmed her data showed the highest level of the mortality marker was in young smolts that had not left the river and had not yet gone anywhere near fish farms, casting doubt on how they could play a major role.

“The main time period of transmission appears to be in fresh water,” she said, adding it’s been detected in young fry in their birth lakes. Miller said that doesn’t mean the virus didn’t first originate with the fish farms nor does it exclude the potential for farmed fish – or perhaps other species in fresh water – to pass the virus back and forth with wild salmon. Housing industry seeks plan B for HST Black Press The rejection of the harmonized sales tax has created a boatload of uncertainty for the B.C. housing industry. B.C.’s move to the HST in July 2010 added seven per cent to the cost of labour in home renovations – a tax that wasn’t applied under the PST. New homes over $525,000 are also taxed under the HST – for the time being. Now, in the wake of the referendum, contractors in B.C. are caught in the transition back to the provincial sales tax, which Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said would take 18 months. Peter Simpson, President and CEO of the
Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association, says the B.C. government didn’t offer up much of a tax plan that businesses can use for the intervening year-and-a-half. Will B.C. residents step away from the market? Simpson says no one can predict the exact outcome, but he expects consumers will put off some reno projects, lowering revenue for contractors. Emergencies like a leaky roof will get taken care of, he says, but a kitchen or a media room reno may have to wait. One solution would see the province offer tax rebates for renovation projects between now and the shift back to the PST, but Simpson says nothing like that was mentioned by Falcon or Premier Christy Clark after the results came
out – even though she said the Liberals had prepared a Plan B, just in case the HST was rejected. “They need a Plan C, because Plan B is not cutting it for our industry right now,” Simpson says. “This whole HST has been a debacle since it was introduced in July 2009 and it will continue 18 months from now.” He says the government needs to come up with a plan to get people to pull the trigger on renos and home purchases immediately, not in 18 months. “There has to be some kind of system that makes it neutral whether you do it now or wait,” he says. “They have to address these issues.” Continued: ANSWERS/ p4

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is wanting to hear from two men who assisted at the scene of a fatal collision in Agassiz on July 12. The APD is continuing to investigate the crash in which a Chilliwack RCMP cruiser collided with a Mustang occupied by 20-year-old driver Steve Genberg of Mission and a 19-year-old male passenger. Genberg died in hospital on July 18. Genberg was reportedly leading a convoy of four or five vehicles en route to Harrison Hot Springs, travelling along Lougheed Highway near Bodnar Road when the crash occurred at about 11 p.m. Const. Ian MacDonald said two men in a red or burgundy sedan assisted at the crash scene, but left before investigators were able to interview them or get their names. It is believed that one or both of them were volunteer firefighters on their way from Agassiz to Vancouver. One of the men mentioned he had family from Yugoslavia, and the other indicated he was a mortgage broker, MacDonald said. He said it is believed the men’s vehicle might have been passed by the police car a few moments before the crash. MacDonald said neither man has since come forward to share information with police. He said they might be from out of town, or they might believe they have nothing to add to the investigation. Anyone with information about the two men is asked to contact the APD at 604-859-5225

Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner called the anti-HST referendum results “a self-inflicted wound” in terms of overall impacts. He was nonetheless “pleased to see the majority of Chilliwack and the eastern Fraser Valley” voted No. “It shows they understood basic economics” and saw the efficiency of the HST over the old-fashioned, overlapping sales taxes, he said. “But I guess the rest of the province didn’t see it that way, and so we’ll go back to the less efficient and more costly form of taxation, one that is certainly more costly to administer.” Penner quoted finance minister Kevin Falcon who reportedly described the Yes win as “a manageable step back” for the province. It’s going to mean less revenue in provincial coffers to pay for things “that people want, like health care, environmental protection, or more services in the courts,” the MLA warned. “There will be less money to deal with and times are already tight, so it makes it less likely the teachers’ union will get anything close to what they’re asking for,” which he said totals about $2.2 million in additional costs. The local agri-food sector and export manufacturers will be hit
hardest locally when they revert back to the old tax system, said Penner. “It will make the effort to diversify and grow these sectors more difficult. But again the people have spoken, and we’ll have to live with the consequences to our economy.” O’Mahony doesn’t think the fight is even over quite yet. “I was willing to honour the results either way,” she said. “Now it’s up to the provincial government to honour the will of the electorate and return the HST to exactly the way it was before, with the exemptions.” “If not, it would be meanspirited and punitive response to this vote, and I certainly hope (Premier) Christy Clark is above that kind of politicking,” she said. Chilliwack MLA John Les was still feeling “deeply disappointed” in the results on Monday morning, but not totally surprised by them. “Anyone with a finger on the pulse knew this thing was not likely to be successful,” he said. “But I am having trouble shaking the disappointment I feel, not necessarily for the politics of it, or for the here and now, but for our kids and grandchildren.” The HST would have grown the B.C. economy in the longterm with additional jobs and investment. “Every economic analysis
showed this to be the case, and now we are going to forego a substantial portion of that.” The results were swayed by political considerations, not economic ones, he suggested. Ridings that historically supported B.C. Liberals at the polls, did so again in the referendum, and those who typically voted NDP, voted to extinguish the HST. “That is deeply unfortunate because at the end of the day this was an economic question,” Les said. “It got caught up in world of politics, grandstanding and misinformation.” But there was also a message in the results. “The government needs to understand as well that the rollout of the HST was not well done in the end, and that is part of the learning we have to do,” Les said. What happens now? “The express wishes of the people” must be carried out, he said. “We should be going back to the old way as soon as possible. We might as well do it as quickly as we can. The province’s plan to create a civic spending watchdog that might find efficiencies and uncover waste will be a hot topic at this fall’s Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) convention. UBCM president Barbara Steele denies mayors and councillors are fearful of the government’s intent to appoint a municipal auditor-general, but says they have plenty of questions. “There doesn’t seem to be a local government opposed to somebody coming in and checking out the books, checking the spending and even checking for best practices,” Steele said. “The concern is we don’t know what the auditor-general is supposed to do or what’s broken. Miller’s appearance was widely anticipated due to reports she’d been muzzled by federal officials after the publication of her latest paper in the journal Science. She told the commission she had been told not to publicly discuss her findings ahead of her testimony – out of respect for the inquiry – but said the same instructions applied to other DFO staff. Miller said she has always had complete freedom to publish her findings. “I’ve never been told not to share research.” Earlier in the week, the inquiry released emails from Miller in late July questioning why DFO wouldn’t test farmed salmon for the
parvovirus strain showing up in sockeye and warning colleagues the department better have an answer when the topic came up before the inquiry. Miller’s email indicated her colleagues felt there was no benefit to testing, and if the industry likely wouldn’t comply if asked to voluntarily submit fish for testing. The judicial inquiry led by retired Judge Bruce Cohen was called by the federal government after less than 1.5 million sockeye returned in 2009, far fewer than the more than 10 million expected. The inquir y has explored myriad potential causes for the decline – from pollution and habitat destruction to overfishing and marine predators – but none has yet emerged as the probable sole cause of the drop in stocks.

The defeat of the HST Friday doesn’t change one fact about B.C.’s finances: We’re still spending more money than we are bringing in. The HST hoped to address that. Not necessarily by increasing the amount of tax British Columbians pay, but by improving the economy by streamlining a clumsy and archaic provincial sales tax. A more active economy, the government contended, would mean more tax revenue coming in. That argument failed to sway many. It was lost amid the shouts and accusations over the way the HST was introduced, and suspicion it would only benefit business. Chilliwack MLA Barry Penner aptly called Friday’s referendum defeat a “self-inflicted wound.” Indeed, the way the Liberals handled the HST should offer a textbook example to future politicians on how not to introduce a tax. So deep was the anger that almost every economist and business leader failed to convince the public that tossing out the PST would enhance economic activity. Even the promise to reduce the tax was seen as a crass attempt to buy the public’s favour. So what now? If there is one consensus that can be drawn from the last few months it is that the PST is a deeply flawed tax. Business people, politicians and economists agree that because of the way it is applied, it stifles growth. The other reality is that the things we want our government to pay for – health care, education, transportation – all continue to cost more. Our options are simple: Spend less, or find ways to generate additional revenue. Premier Christy Clark has promised a Plan B. Let’s hope that plan involves a thorough and transparent discussion about ways we can improve our tax structure. If the PST is flawed, Friday’s HST defeat should not preclude our changing it. Layton remembered for his fire, humanity Whether you liked his politics or not, Jack Layton’s personal score on the likeability scale was, well, off the scale. That smile framed in that signature moustache, that effervescent enthusiasm, his compassion mixed with a gritty willingness to scrap for what he believed in, his boldness, humour, and connectedness, his hopes and dreams for Canada made him so much more than a partisan politician. There were signs of what was to come when he held a press conference in July to announce he was temporarily stepping aside as leader to combat a new form of cancer that had stricken him. Having successfully battled prostate cancer, he was hoping for the best from his treatment. But that new curse was already taking its toll. Then, barely a month later, cancer took his life in an almost Shakespearean tra-

gedy. At the top of his game, he had so much more he wanted to do and to give. The outpouring of shock and grief was palpable not only among NDPers but the general public. Thousands paid their last respects as his body lay in state in Ottawa and Toronto. Heartfelt public applause reverberated as Margaret people followed his last journey EVANS home. Jack connected. He embraced everyone no matter their background, colour or social stigma. He gave people hope, and he gave himself hope that he could banish the cynicism that has come to define today’s politics. He had that inspirational quality that made so many want
to be his friend, share a beer with him, hang out, and dream of new days. Even Prime Minister Stephen Harper lamented the lost promise of the two of them getting together for a jam session, Harper on piano and Layton on guitar. Too often, bad things come too soon. His passing raises challenges for the NDP. Canada is not a social-democratic leaning country and in recent elections it has moved from centre to centreright. Right now, only Manitoba and Nova Scotia have NDP governments while B.C., Ontario and Saskatchewan have gone NDP in the past. Jack’s tireless campaign during this year’s federal election put the NDP into the victorious, and surprising, Official Opposition position with 103-member caucus as the Bloc fell in Quebec and NDP rookie candidates filled the void,
likely as much to their surprise as anyone else’s. Waving his cane as a triumphant banner, his image became iconic of the do-able and the achievable. But his body said otherwise. In his last two days, he crafted a letter to Canadians. “All my life I have worked to make things better. Hope and optimism have defined my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada,” he wrote, addressing young Canadians. “I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this countr y needs today.” Eulogizing his friend, former Ontario NDP leader Stephen Lewis mourned Layton who, he said, died “at the pinnacle of his career.” And, to great applause, he acclaimed Layton’s letter at its heart as a manifesto for social democracy. “He made politics

seem so natural and appealing.” In so many ways, he was the ideal political leader, one whose reach extends beyond partisan barriers to the core social realm. But they come along rarely, their passage through life unique markers. His last words linger, tempting the future. “My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.” He was to the end the people’s politician who dreamed no little dreams. As a parent you feel helpless, but it’s a lot harder on her than it is us.” Before Cypris was diagnosed at eight years old, she had already been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia and dysgraphia. Many nights she went to bed crying, lamenting that she was a bad girl, that she was dumb. “She wasn’t learning, wasn’t making friends, wasn’t interested in group activities. She was very isolated and I didn’t know how to bridge that gap,” says Melissa. “It was heart breaking, I didn’t know how to help.” The family suspected something more wasn’t right, but navigating the system was a challenge. They were on a wait list for Cypris to be assessed for years before she was finally diagnosed. They hired tutors, sent her to a private school for children with dyslexia, paid extensively for a private psychological education assessment, which is required to get an autism assessment. “We did everything we could think of and

Poma Dhaliwal, owner of Jolly Miller Pub, and Dave Archibald, owner of Alpine Valley Disposal and former assistant coach of the Bruins, have taken over the annual charity golf tournament formerly organized by the Bruins Alumni Association. The charity tournament on Sept. 6 is already sold out with 128 golfers booked and a wait list. At $175 per person, $700 per foursome, as well as separate hole sponsorships, organizers estimate $30,000 raised for the day – all of which goes to the pediatric centre. “It’s a good cause,” said Dhaliwal, who has three children under the age of seven. “It’s a shame that [the pediatric centre] should have to suffer just because the Bruins are gone.” In 2008, the Bruins organization had promised to donate $150,000 over a 10-year span, but when they left town this spring, so did their commitment. Prior to the team’s departure, it had donated two $15,000 installments. An undisclosed settlement agreement was made between the now defunct Bruins organization and the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation. The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation was not available for comment prior to The Progress deadline. In previous years, the golf tournament had struggled to fill its spots and attract sponsorship. One year it was even cancelled because of lack of support. But Dhaliwal and Archibald had no such problems. Within six weeks of taking the tournament on, they had filled all spots. The overwhelming response did not come as a surprise. “I’ve lived here my whole life; Chilliwack is a very supportive community,” said Archibald.

Unveiling the truth of autism Katie Bartel The Progress If Cypris Flynn’s Asperger’s syndrome could speak, her mom is sure it would say the following: I have a hard time adapting to change, reading and perceiving the feelings, actions and body language of others. I also hear, see, feel and smell more than you. The world can be very frustrating and confusing, causing me to feel overwhelmed, upset or even melt down. I am not lazy, not a brat, not misbehaving, not faking, not attentionseeking or in need of discipline. I am just like other kids in many ways, with a heart that feels love and pain. Don’t avoid me because I act differently. At just 11-years old, Cypris has already faced years of judgement, isolation, criticism, shunning – all because people don’t understand the disorder, says her mom Melissa Flynn. Melissa, along with husband Jason and family friend Joel Hershey (owners of The Truth skate and snow shop in Vedder) are participating in the Walk Now For Autism Speaks on
Sept. 25 as a way of unveiling the truth of autism and further supporting their daughter and others like her. Autism is a neurological disorder, which affects the way the brain functions, and causes difficulties with communication, social interaction, and unusual patterns of repeated behaviour, activities and interests. Asperger’s is a high-functioning form of autism. Those afflicted often develop normal language skills and are able to function more independently, but struggle with relationships, understanding social cues, sensory stimuli, and transitions. Many also engage in repetitive movements and speech, are rigid and rulebound, and have difficulties with reading. And because they are high-functioning, they are often mistaken as “problem childs.” Melissa has been repeatedly asked: Can’t you just pretend she’s not there? Can’t you get your kid to be quiet? Can’t you just ignore her? “There are so many ‘can’t you’ questions and the answer is always no,” says Melissa. “Cypris can’t do a lot of things other kids

awareness, community supports and bridging programs. Team Truth aims to raise $3,000. They’ve partnered with etnies, which has designed a shoe for Autism Speaks, that features the charity’s puzzle piece logo, and will be released in Spring 2012. (A prototype of the shoe is on display at The Truth skate shop.)
Etnies will be donating 5 per cent from every shoe sold – at a minimum of $10,000 – to Autism Speaks. The Truth will also be donating $10 from every shoe sold to the cause. Miller a strong candidate for captaincy Training camp has begun for the Chilliwack Chiefs, with a whole new group of players ready to represent this city in its return to the BCHL. To help you get to know your new team, the Progress sports section will be running several player features from now until the start of the regular season. The crash course continues today with a veteran defender ready to stick up for his young teammates.
Eric J. Welsh, The Progress If you havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t met Ty Miller yet, chances are you will soon. And chances are equally good that he will be the one introducing himself to you, because thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the type of guy he is. Friendly, outgoing and very likely the first captain of the Chilliwack Chiefs V2. The 20-year-old Prince George native was picked up from the Langley Rivermen in an offseason deal, reuniting him with former coach Harvey Smyl. In 60 games with Langley last season, Miller had four goals, 19 points and 111 penalty minutes, which gives you a pretty good idea
about what he can do. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never going to put up glitzy offensive numbers. What he will give you is steady defence, physical play and toughness. As nice as Miller may be off the ice, he can be a nasty piece of business on it, as opponents have discovered over four BCHL seasons split between Quesnel (200708), Westside (2008-09), Prince George (200910) and Langley (200911). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Off the ice Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never been in a fight, but I basically fought my way into this league,â&#x20AC;? Miller said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Over time Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gotten used to the league and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to do more, but the fighting has given me more respect from my opponents and more time to do things on the ice.â&#x20AC;? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a nearly universal truth that the so-called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;enforcersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; are the best guys in hockey. Former NHL tough guy Todd Ewen racked up almost 2000 penalty minutes in the bigs, but dreamed of writing and illustrating childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books. Dave Schultz, arguably the most menacing enforcer ever, was a victim of bullying in his youth and recently launched a national antibullying program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are some guys who are absolutely crazy on and off the ice, and those are the guys youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re scared of,â&#x20AC;? Miller said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possible to be a nice people-person off the ice and still have that edge on the ice. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve just got to find the right medium and

The newfangled roof brings a love-it-orhate-it element to the Vancouver skyline, and Miller got plenty of insight on how it will look and work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They made the roof to go in and out depending on the weather, but they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it on the fly,â&#x20AC;? he explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s windy or raining, they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t move the roof. They have to judge what the weather is going to be beforehand, which, to me, wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the smartest design. I imagine people will like the stadium regardless, but they might get a bit
upset when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting rained on and the roof isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t closing.â&#x20AC;? Every architect has a dream project, and Miller already has his. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The architecture in the Roman coliseums was amazing, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to re-enact those,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I designed a model of it when I was younger, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d build a modern one if I ever had the chance.â&#x20AC;? First things first. Millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s immediate task at hand is to help lay the foundation for the new Chilliwack Chiefs and he appears to be the right man for the job.

The Chilliwack Huskers are halfway through the 2011 season, and another winless campaign is starting to look more and more likely. A 46-7 road loss to the Langley Rams on Saturday pushed Chilliwack’s B.C. Football Conference record to 0-5. The final five games include two games against the mighty Okanagan Sun with singles against the defending BCFC champion Nanaimo Raiders, Kamloops Broncos and Langley Rams. The Rams appeared to be a beatable opponent, coming into this weekend with a pedestrian 1-3 record. But Langley’s ballhawking defence put Chilliwack into an early hole, producing four first
half interceptions. Nick Felicella returned one of those 13 yards for a major. Charles Scott, Joe Patko and Jeff Paras also had picks off Chilliwack quarterback Adann Hendrickson, giving Langley’s offence a short field to work with. The Rams got 101 rushing yards and two touchdowns from tailback Clay Ross. Langley QB Brandon Leyh was efficient on 13 throws, completing nine for 207 yards and a pair of TDs. Nick Downey was the big play target, catching two balls for 110 yards and a major. He added an 84-yard kick return touchdown. Daniel English also caught a touchdown toss and place kicker Nick Taylor hit on a 35 yard field goal. Chilliwack’s only points came on a Hendrickson to Alex Sattar touchdown pass.

A strong contingent of local athletes helped the Fraser Valley Zone to a first place finish at the B.C. Senior Games, held Aug. 16-20 in Castlegar, Nelson and Trail. Locals picked up 51 of 285 Fraser Valley medals, including 11 gold. Linda Marsh (Chilliwack) and Carole Parrish (Cultus Lake) picked up gold and bronze medals in 55+ pairs whist. Marie Shaw (Cultus Lake) and Harold Robson (Chilliwack) picked up bronze in the same event. Paula Quick was a standout in the pool. Individually, she won three silver medals in the women’s 55-59 200, 400 and 800 metre freestyles, adding a bronze in the 25m freestyle. Quick added a gold and bronze medal in team relay events. Warpath Several promising local fighters are on the card this weekend at the WarPath Mixed Martial Arts event at Tzeachten Hall. It is with great sadness that after a brief illness, we announce the passing of our Mother Rose Carman CARMAN on August 25, 2011, at the age of 86 years. Mom came to Chilliwack from Alberta at the tender age of 17. She started her meat wrapping career at Totem Meats and then went on to spend more than 30 years with Canada Safeway. Mom married our Dad, Ray in 1947. They raised their three children on the farm that Mom continued to call home for sixtyfour years. Predeceased by our Dad, Ray in 2001, Mom leaves a loving family: Noreen (Barry) Sterling of Fanny bay; Betty-Anne (Ross) Hicks of Campbell River, and Jim (Brenda) Carman of Chilliwack. Six grandchildren: Nadine (Brent) Sterzenbach of Victoria; Cameron (Jenifer) Sterling of Vancouver; Kristin (Caley) Thompson and Tyson (Nikki) Hicks all of Campbell River, Michael (Jennifer) Carman and David Carman all of Chilliwack. She also leaves five great-grandchildren who loved her dearly. Mom valued her family and friends and was always happy to supply a cup of tea and some delicious baking. We are so happy she was able to live at home on the farm, her favorite place on earth, until days before her death. Mom will be sadly missed by her children and their families as well as her siblings and many friends. GREEN Muriel Ayleen
Sept. 18, 1933 – Aug. 26, 2011 Ayleen Green passed away August 21 after a courageous fight against cancer. She will GREEN be lovingly missed by her family; daughter Judy Simmill (Jim), son Lyle Green (Heather), grandchildren Mindy (Matt), Melissa, Lindsey and Jordan, and brother Guy (Sandra). Ayleen was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Joseph Robert (Bob) Green and her brother Eldon (Kay). Ayleen was the epitome of infinite patience, kindness, thoughtfulness and devotion to her family. She would have walked on fire if it would help us. She was always there for us without exception and she will always be remembered for teaching us so much about true love, commitment and loyalty. We all benefited from her love and guidance and we hope we will always make her proud as she watches us now from above. A Memorial Service for Mom will be held at Carman United Church, 7258 Vedder Rd, Sardis, on Thursday, September 1st 2011 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ayleen’s memory to the BC Cancer Society. LANGBROEK Alice
Alice Langbroek passed away suddenly on August 26, 2011 to be with her Saviour God, LANGBROEK Jesus Christ. Alice was born in the Netherlands, April 27, 1925. She is survived by six of seven children. Alida Hansma, Casey (Jane), Gerald (Lydia), Emily Van Reeuwyk, Martha Schinkel and Peter(Caroline), 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Alice was predeceased by her husband George, March 30, 2002 and daughter Audrey July 3, 1990. Alice was born in the Netherlands. George and Alice Langbroek were married on January 12, 1950. They immigrated from the Netherlands to Chilliwack on May 1956 with their first three children. She will be remembered by her sweetness, graciousness, kind and gentle nature. Alice loved visiting with her family and friends. Alice loved attending church through which she lived the gospel. She was an example and left a heritage of her faith with us. Celebration of her life will be held Thursday, 10am, September 1, 2011 at the Free Reformed Church, 45471 Yale Road in Chilliwack. Pastor John Koopman officiating. MELLOR Clive
MB, CHB, PhD, FRCP, FRC Psych. 1932-2011 Clive Mellor died peacefully at home on August 24th, 2011 after a short illness. He leaves to mourn his MELLOR loving wife, Dr. Terry Anne Komusi, and his children by his first wife Ann (nee Phillipson): Simon, Judith, Hilary, Clare, Justin and their families. In England his brother Peter Mellor and sister Barbara Wright and their families also mourn their loss. He was born in Glossop, Derbyshire, attended Manchester University where he graduated MB, ChB, and trained there in Psychiatry obtaining the M.D. and PhD. He also served two years as a captain in the R.A.M.C. from 1958-1960. He left his senior lecturer’s job in Manchester in 1971 to go to the New Medical School at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He was professor of Psychiatry for the next 23 years. His main publications were in the areas of schizophrenia and alcoholism. He was Chief of Psychiatry at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital for 10 years before becoming Chief of Psychiatry at the General Hospital of Memorial University after completing his term as chairman, he became Chief of Staff at the General Hospital for the next three years. Upon retirement, he moved to the Fraser Valley where he practiced as community psychiatrist for another five years before retiring to his small farm in Agassiz where he, his wife and their three dogs enjoyed a relaxing and bucolic life. SUDERMANN Katie
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Katie Sudermann, who went to be SUDERMANN with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on August 24, 2011. She passed away at Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack, BC. Katie was born on March 16, 1928 in the Ukraine, Russia. Katie met Jake Sudermann in Winnipeg and they were married in 1952. Katie loved to be hospitable to everyone. She was a very industrious person and a great and loyal friend to everyone. She loved to garden, cook, bake and arrange flowers. Katie was an active volunteer, both in her church, with the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and in her community. Katie is survived by her loving husband, Jake; son, Henry (Eleanor) Sudermann; daughter, Elenore (John) Hanson; grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great god children. A Celebration of Katie’s Life will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, September 1, 2011at Eden Mennonite Church, 46551 Chilliwack Central Rd. TOOP WHITE Robert Gordon Archibald (Bob) Leonard “Bud”
Bob passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 26,, 2011 at Cascade Hospice. He was born TOOP December 31, 1938 in Chilliwack. Bob was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was happily married to his wife Bev for 52 years. Born and raised in Chilliwack he remained a local his entire life. Bob will forever missed by his two children, Rob (Janice) Toop and Cindy (Reg) Dyck, his grandchildren, Amanda (Chad) Longland, Alicia (Jeff) Toop, Chad (Trish) Toop, Jess (Jeff ) Booth and great grandchildren, Kara, Noah, Alayna, Cadence and Hunter. Bob worked for Dairyland for 40 years. He loved fishing, camping , hunting, playing the piano and accordion, and golfing. Most of all though, Bob loved spending time with his family. Archibald Leonard White “Bud” passed away unexpectedly at his home in Chilliwack, BC WHITE on Sunday August 21, 2011. Bud was born in Quesnel, on July 22, 1933. He worked for the Department of Highways in Wells before moving to Kingston, ON in 1965, where he worked for DuPont until retiring to Chilliwack in 1987. Bud found great joy in his family and more than anything, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren. Bud is lovingly remembered by Clare, his wife of 43 years, their children, Sean (Krista) and Sarah; grandchildren, Braden, Kade, Logan and Olivia; brother, John; sisters, Lillian, Irene and Pat. He was predeceased by his infant sons, Craig and Leo and his parents, Archie and Dorothy White. A small family celebration of his life will be held this fall. WILSON Warde
Born Raymond Wilson on July 3rd 1924 in Tecumseh Ontario, Warde passed on August 27, WILSON 2011 at Chilliwack General Hospital after a brief illness. Left to mourn are his wife of 63 years, Drena, his four beautiful daughters Shandie (Michael), Sharie (Clayten), Shelagh and Rae, his 7 grandchildren and 11 great grand children. He spent much of WWII in the Canadian Armed Forces stationed in Europe until his return home in 1946. After marrying his sweetheart on his birthday in 1948 he moved his young family from Ontario to South Vancouver in 1952 eventually working on the ramp at CP Air for many years until he retired in 1987. Retirement brought a move to Chilliwack where he was not totally fulfilled with his model train hobby so went to work as a general handyman for Towler Realty which perfectly suited his love of the outdoors, especially working in the yard or garden. An avid Canucks and Blue Jays fan, Warde also loved his WWE wrestling and a cut-throat game of Euchre. A train trip with the family to Whistler in July was his final rail voyage until today where he is the “engineer of his own heavenly locomotive”. He also leaves behind a cherished circle of close friends in both B.C. and Ontario. Funeral to be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 8909 Mary St., Chilliwack B.C. on Thursday Sept. 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choosing would be much appreciated.
