Sockeye brings anglers to river Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Hundreds of anglers staked out a spot on the lower Fraser River over the weekend to take advantage of a recreational opening for sockeye. Test fishing numbers are being monitored closely to see if additional sockeye fisheries can be justified, said Barry Rosenberger, chair of the Fraser River Panel. The pre-season estimate for this year’s total sockeye run on the Fraser is three million, and rose to four million Friday. “Things could change,” Rosenberger told The Progress. “But the decision was made to open it up for the three days ending Monday.” They’ve since decided the sport fishery will remain open indefinitely, instead of going with weekend-only fisheries, he said. “We’ve been trying to give some stability to the recreational fishery,” Rosenberger added. Even though the Fraser sockeye numbers are no where near as strong as last summer, there’s still anticipation about more fishing opportunities opening up. First Nations have been in the river fishing for food, social and ceremonial purposes, but sales agreements have not been reached by DFO and Sto:lo bands this year. (See story, page 3.) A local tackle shop employee said last week that staff were answering up to 20 calls an hour about the prospect of the first recreational opening of the summer Continued: SOCKEYE/ p6

Steely nerves needed for dragon transport Katie Bartel The Progress The dragon has left the station. Early Monday morning, Eagle West Cranes was on metal sculptor Kevin Stone’s front lawn preparing to transport his 8,000pound steel dragon to the Pacific National Exhibition grounds in Vancouver. The experience had Stone a flutter of nerves. “I don’t want nothing to go wrong,” he said, swiping his hand nervously through his hair. “A

million things could go wrong.” The top-heavy dragon could flip during lift off, or get damaged from flying debris on the highway, or if measurements weren’t accurate, the 12-foot tall dragon could meet its demise in the underbelly of an overpass. “A lot of unforeseen events could happen,” said Stone, sure his nerves wouldn’t settle until the dragon was on-site, unharmed. The stress, he said, comes with the territory. “This is the whole point of making these [sculptures] – for them to be on public display.”

Sto:lo sockeye catch can’t be sold, says DFO Black Press Sto:lo Nation member bands can’t legally sell the sockeye salmon they catch in the lower Fraser River this summer. The bands stretching from Pitt Meadows to Yale could have had an authorized commercial fishery – as happened in past years – but not enough of them were willing to sign a sales agreement with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). Usually, when there’s enough inbound sockeye to open a regular commercial fishery, sales agree-

ments letting aboriginal bands also profit from the fishery are almost automatic. Without such a deal, the Sto:lo are supposed to fish only for food, social and ceremonial purposes and not sell any of their catch. But the bands won’t have to submit to the more rigorous monitoring and enforcement by DFO that come with authorized sales. Critics who have accused the Sto:lo of being behind widespread illegal salmon sales in the past doubt its fishermen will honour the rules. B.C. Fishery Survival Coalition spokesman Phil Eidsvik pointed to

the estimates of DFO investigators, entered in evidence at the Cohen Inquiry this spring, that more than 90 per cent of lower Fraser sockeye harvested under aboriginal food fisheries were being illegally sold. DFO officials at the inquiry also warned that budget cuts are likely to further limit the department’s ability to bust illegal salmon sales and poaching. “It’s fairly easy for the Sto:lo to walk away from a sales agreement because they know they can sell it illegally anyway,” Eidsvik said. “It might be easier to sell more fish without a sales agreement than it is with one.”

Nor is he confident in DFO’s ability to police aboriginal fishing. “They still don’t have the regulatory tools and support from their bosses to get control of this fishery.” Eidsvik said he hopes the issue gets further airing before the Cohen commission, which examines aboriginal fishing again Aug. 19. Sto:lo representatives could not be reached for comment. An estimated 4.2 million sockeye salmon are currently believed to be returning to the Fraser. That’s a relatively small run and the Sto:lo would likely have been

allocated “very few” sockeye for sale had enough member bands signed on, said Les Jantz, DFO’s deputy area director for the B.C. Interior. “They are just going to be fishing for food, social and ceremonial purposes,” he said. “If there are situations where fish are sold that would be illegal from that fishery and enforcement would be engaged to deal with that situation.” A sales agreement is in effect with the Musqueam at the mouth of the Fraser and the Tsawwassen First Nation have a sockeye catch allocation under their treaty.

Chilliwack a groovy stop on The Hippie Trip Jennifer Feinberg The Progress What a long, strange trip it’s been for Jason McCelvey. The 42-year-old, who calls himself Easy, spent the last two years building the world’s first interactive hippie bus, to spread “peace, love and groovy good times.” Chilliwack was his home for a few days last week, attracting crowds of surprised and curious onlookers, whether he parked the van downtown or at the Columbia Valley Music Festival. “I think it’s just fantastic,” exclaims passerby Cindy Ward, after she spotted the Hippie Bus in the library parking lot and was immediately drawn to it. She offered McCelvey a homemade “bliss bar” made of dried fruits, nuts and chocolate, which he, of course, accepted with a grateful flourish. “It’s so awesome,” she tells him, while checking out the elaborate and colourfully painted exterior. “I wish I had one to go travelling with. It’s too cool!” McCelvey’s project, The Hippie Trip, is an all-out celebration of counter-culture art and culture, from the 1960s to today. The mind-boggling hippietrip. com website features 4,000 clickable links based on items in the van, and it’s only about a month old. “I’ve always been an amateur sixties historian,” he says. “There’s a tremendous amount of good will and interest in this project.” Another VW van owner hastily pulls into the parking lot on a lark after spotting Easy from the road. He jumps out to chat about the Hippie Trip and snap a photo. His own VeeDub was a vintage 1969 number, painted a bright bubble-gum pink. Originally from the Kootenays, McCelvey has lived on the road for years, travelling Pacific Coast Highway, the Baja peninsula, island

hopping off the West Coast, and cruising the highways of Vermont and upstate New York. “Wherever I go, freedom is the dream, and the magic of the open road is the light that illuminates my soul,” he writes on his website. Easy has collected everything from vintage posters, protest pins, and bumper stickers, as well as retro furnishings, clothing, books and records. Almost everything was found in thrift stores and recycled for his unique project, except the tires. The Keep On Truckin’ mud flaps date back to 1975, and they came in the original packaging, he said. “I even have a solar-powered

Easy-Bake Oven, and a bunch of other hilarious stuff to show people,” he says. He keeps a number of hippie costumes for people to dress up in and will photograph them against a green screen. Then he inserts the figures into famous scenes from the sixties, and emails off a print to the willing subject. The Hippie Trip van looks like half of a bus painted from a vivid, psychedelic dream, and the little unit is pulled by another classic VW bus. The mobile caravan part was welded together using two recycled vans from 1969 and 1970. “With millions of people turning on these days to living green, tuning

in to conscious living and ethical consumerism, everyone of us has developed a little bit of the hippie spirit inside,” he says. Whether it’s recycling, eating organic, or choosing green energy, there is a desire by many to find a way to live a more earth-friendly lifestyle. “The feedback I’ve been getting from the website is overwhelming and humbling,” he says. Stay tuned. Next McCelvey is creating an interactive TV show on Youtube to explore all the multimedia methods to get out the Hippie Trip message. jfeinberg@theprogress.com twitter.com/CHWKjourno

Fraser Health patients waiting for surgery are being offered free workouts through a partnership with a chain of fitness gyms. Patients referred by their surgeon now get five weeks free access to Steve Nash Fitness World and two one-hour sessions with a private trainer. The idea is patients who get fit before they go under the knife tend to get out of hospital faster with fewer complications and ultimately cost the health care system less money. “They tend to mobilize faster, recover faster after surgery and have lower incidence of complications like pneumonia, clots in their leg or other wound complications,” said Dr. Peter Blair, the health authority’s program medical director for surgery. He said pre-op fitness is particularly important for abdominal surgery, joint replacements and major chest surgery. But doctors’ advice is often ignored. “For 30 years I’ve been asking people to lose weight before surgery without very much success,” he said. Continued: GYM/ p8

Almost a quarter-million dollars in refunded development cost charges could be issued to Genica Development this week from City of Chilliwack coffers. The proposed $231,708.11 refund, on the agenda for approval at Tuesday’s council meeting, is in keeping with a newly revised policy on DCCs, confirmed Mayor Sharon Gaetz. The project in question is the 68-unit Auburn Retirement Residence on Young Road, constructed for the 55+ community. When it came before council initially the vision was for a “small” apartment complex, but the focus of the project changed, and the plan became to build “congregate care” units, said Genica Development owner Larry Les. As a result, the refund of DCC funds could be approved by council this week. According to the revised policy, DCCs calculated for a developer on the basis of “a

specific land use” at the time of issuing a building permit, “and to which a different use is permitted prior to occupancy, (with a DCC rate less than the ones they paid),” may be eligible for a partial refund, subject to certain conditions. “It’s something where we had to be fair to the developer and

Dragon sculpture makes slow trek to PNE display had to divert onto the Abbotsfor d-Mission Highway, then onto the Lougheed Highway from there. Going just under 60 kilometres an hour, the trip was estimated to take three hours. “It’s going to be quite the spectacle,” said

Stone, who planned to drive behind the dragon the entire route. “A lot of honking for sure.” The most stressful for Stone was getting it onto the flatbed trailer. A 120-tonne crane was used, with six straps attached to the metal platform of the dragon. As the crane lifted, the giant pearl

in the dragon’s hand began to quake, and the platform’s steel beams started bending upwards. Stone said that was to be expected, but feared the beams would snap. Like a protective parent, he feared many other aspects of the process. He feared the metal chains of the

He feared the dragon wouldn’t clear the trees on the side of his driveway, and before the trailer could leave, he got his son to saw off large branches on one tree, and used rope to pull back the branches on another. He feared the dragon wasn’t secure enough on the trailer and offered wood blocks and braces to the Eagle West operators. Black Press VICTORIA – Do you need a castle for your super-hero action movie? Rolling ranch land for a western? The B.C. Film Commission and its regional agencies around the province are building up their library of film locations in an effort to maintain B.C.’s $1 billion film and television industry. The provincial government contributed $275,000 to that effort Wednesday, to be shared by film and tourism organizations around the province. C o m m u n i t y, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Ida Chong made the announcement at the Vancouver Island landmark Hatley Castle, which became famous as a location for the X-Men movie franchise. A pack of cigarettes. Loose change. They are items not worth that much, but leaving them in plain sight in your vehicle could lead to an ICBC claim and having to have repairs made after a break-in. There apparently is no target too small for local thieves. While some of the recent thefts from vehicles are of higher-priced items like iPods, cameras and satellite radios, many appear to be a case of someone breaking into the vehicle, then just taking whatever happens to be lying around. We’re halfway through summer (well, according to the calendar, at least), so it might be the easy way to blame youth out of school and bored with many of these crimes. The thing is, according to police, there are peaks and valleys for these break-ins throughout the year, including times when school is in. So how do we stop these crimes? Some of the onus is on the vehicle owners. Do the little things. Make sure your vehicle is locked anytime you leave it. Park in a well-lit area. Most importantly, make sure nothing of value is visible inside. (That’s another reason for parking in a well-lit area.) In terms of how we as a society can cut down on these crimes, there are two schools of thought. One would see the thieves, when caught, face the full force of the justice system. If you catch them early enough in the cycle, you can break them of the bad habits. The other idea is to provide more opportunities for youth in the community. The problem is, to some youth, breaking into vehicles is their leisure activity. Don’t make it easy for them. – Black Press

London riots reveal complicated core Call them thugs, idiots, deadbeats, vandals, looters, low-life, thieves, or whatever. But that searing image of rioters trashing and burning neighbourhoods in London and other major U.K. cities last week has left people everywhere gasping for answers as to what the heck happened. By Saturday, more than 2,250 had been arrested and, in London alone, some 700 had been charged with many of them facing prison terms. It all began after Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old black father of three was shot by police earlier this month in Tottenham, a struggling suburb that has a track record for bad relations between the black community and the police. The death has been mired in controversy. But what began as a peaceful demonstration against the shooting ended up in an all-out riot with

vehicles, homes and businesses burned. By the time 1,600 police were put on patrol last Tuesday, London had been virtually turned into a police state. Now ever yone’s got a stake in the blame game starting with bad politics, bad kids, bad parents and bad morals. Some point finMargaret gers at welfare dependence and EVANS chronic unemployment. One in five youth don’t have jobs. But some of those arrested (and half of them were under 19) were from wealthy homes, had promising careers (one was a real estate agent and another was an aspiring dancer who turned herself in), some were university students taking accounting, journal-

ism or engineering and one was a volunteer ambassador for next year’s summer Olympics whose parents turned her in after seeing her on TV. Social exclusion was high on the list, especially among those dispossessed in a country rich with possession and a sense of entitlement. Cultural diversity in England is intense, class privilege is still the norm and, in London alone, over 300 languages are spoken on a daily basis with every sub-culture represented in its own niche with shops, fashions and restaurants. But don’t tarnish everyone with the same brush. Many of those immigrants, ethnics families and business owners defended their neighbourhoods against rioters and stood up in a strong sense of community that had nothing to do with criminality. In the mix are racism and the

dangerous messaging in gangster rap some have described as a destructive, nihilistic culture. Many black men and women in Tottenham and elsewhere claim they are treated by police like criminals regardless of fact, aggravating prejudice and hatred and sowing the seeds for payback. The riot, some say, was long in coming. Cuts to social services ranked high alongside weak policing. Prime Minister David Cameron said that there had been far too few police deployed onto the streets and that their tactics weren’t working. Then there’s opportunism, being there in the moment and swept up in a mob mentality, a lapse in morality and the excitement pumped by social media. But therein lie the rioters’ downfall. Never has the police had such a rich trail of evidence

with thousands of posted images and statements on Twitter and Facebook. That happened here. The Stanley Cup riot gave police a plethora of social media evidence they are still investigating. Britain is a country not just mired in debt but engulfed in a social meltdown while committed to an unsustainable democracy of costly education, health care for all and a welfare system propping up the discontent, the disillusioned and the dangerous. The acrimonious fact is that if Britain is ever to claw its way out of this mess, it needs those people. Their collective skills and engagement in society could recalibrate prosperous stability. It’s a long way off but for society to ignore the possibility is to do so at the country’s peril.

Sterk replies on smart meters Re: Green Party gets lost in the static (B.C. Views, Aug. 4). Tom Fletcher is correct. The 2009 BC Greens platform had a time line that included smart metering by 2012. We did not recommend wireless meters because, as Fletcher mentioned, we have precautionary policy on EMF radiation. Our policy was revised in 2010. The initiatives we wanted implemented prior to new meters – feed-in tariffs, time-of-day pricing and regional management boards – were not in progress at the end of 2009 so that the timeline for smart metering was eliminated. Without being tied to substantial energy conservation,

BC Hydro’s smart meter program is simply a different and more expensive way to collect data. A billion dollars invested in conservation and energy retrofits, diversifying to renewable energy or any number of priorities should precede changing meters. Fletcher may dismiss health concerns associated with WIFI but people have a right to feel safe and healthy in their own homes. Those who chose not to use wireless technology should not be forced to do so. As I said at the news conference, wireless smart meters are a technological solution looking for a problem. With shrewd mar-

keting, the companies that developed wireless smart meters have become wealthy with sole-source contracts from government after government. At some point, given deficits and debt load, we will need to reverse the decisionmaking process so that long-term plans actually precede implementation of new technology. Other jurisdictions are putting moratoriums on or cancelling the installation of smart meters. We are recommending BC Hydro listen to valid privacy, security and health concerns and change course. Jane Sterk Leader Green Party of B.C.

Helping the toads cross the road I have again this year with great interest watched the annual toad migration in the Ryder Lake uplands. I never cease to be amazed at how many residents come out to support these tiny amphibians in their struggle to survive. It is a marvel to me that as a community we hold fast to the idea that every one of these species is important to the continuation of our environment as we know it. I am proud that the residents of Ryder Lake embrace this event with a warm smile and great attitude. Return of keys greatly appreciated I wish to extend my grateful thanks to the gentleman in the sports car who stopped me at the four-way stop Teskey/Prest. Bailey to return my house keys which had dropped from my truck. A combination of having too much on my mind and not focusing on the task of unhitching the flatbed trailer resulted in me leaving them on the bumper. They made it all the way

down Ryder Lake Road to fall off near the bottom. It just goes to show there are courteous people on the roads. I did not manage to get his name nor licence plate, else I would be thanking him in person. He went out of his way and his efforts are appreciated. I hope you will allow me to thank him through your paper. Clive Ellis

for the here and now, it is for our future generations so they can consume healthy salmon as did our ancestors,” said Chawathil chief Rhoda Peters. She, and other rally attendees will be heading to Vancouver on Aug. 30, “to support Justice Cohen, as a leader, along with Chawathil community members, to hear the truth of what is going on.” Shxw’ whámél council member Melody Andrews said she has “no doubt” that the fish farms contribute to the decimation of the salmon. “As Stó:lõ people we have a deep historical connection and relationship with the salmon,” she said in a news release. Grand Chief Ron John of Chawathil said he supported land-based fish farming and would like to see all First Nations along the river take a stand against open-net fish farms. This comes on the heels of Skwah First Nation leaders taking a similar public position recently against opennet fish farms. “This groundswell of community support is very encouraging,” said Skway elder Eddie Gardner. Several Skwah members have expressed interest in the idea of developing a “closed containment” fish farm facility on their land, he added. Gardner is continuing to raise public awareness about the issues related to opennet fish farming and said he is optimistic for a good showing at the Cohen Commission, as well as the Wild Salmon Warriors Rally August 30 at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Amber Kurtz, owner of Apeldoorn’s Restaurant on Mill Street, which serves high tea from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. says the recent tea phenomenon in North America is about more than just tea, it’s about the experience. PHOTOS BY JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Tea, more than just a beverage Katie Bartel The Progress Walking into Apeldoorn’s is like going back in time. At least for most girls it is. Back to a time when they wore frilly pink dresses and hosted decadent tea parties in their bedrooms, when only the best plastic teacups were brought out, and only their best stuffed bears and favourite

Cabbage Patch dolls invited. Except at Apeldoorn’s, the plastic tea cups have been replaced with real china and the stuffed bears with real friends. At high noon, with not a table to spare, grandmas and teenagers, best friends and siblings, mothers and daughters chatted over scones and Devonshire cream, laughed over quarters of crustless sandwiches and sweet pickles, and gushed over three-tiered trays of thinly sliced melons and sinfully tasty treats. With the aromas of different-flavoured teas swimming from table to

table, Amber Kurtz, with her long slender fingers, passed each guest a dainty, vintagestyle teacup atop a matching saucer. For Kurtz, owner of Apeldoorn’s Restaurant on Mill Street, the perfect tea party is about creating the perfect atmosphere. With old sewing tables as eating tables, cotton doilies as napkins, and an out-in-the-open shelf full of floral, Victorian, and gold-trimmed teacups, she’s done just that. “It’s about more than just the tea,” Kurtz said. “It’s about the experience.”

These days, more and more are seeking out that experience. The tea culture in North America has boomed in the last few years. Industry projections for 2012 have tea sales at $15 billion up from $4.6 billion in 1999. “The projections made as far as tea growth are phenomenal; it’s set to explode,” said Kim Self, co-owner of Aromatica Fine Teas on Young Road, who attended the World Tea Expo held in Las Vegas in June. “If you listen to industry marketers, Continued: TEA/ p17

‘So much of our tea culture is accidental’ TEA from p13 you would think tea is set to become a fourth world religion. We think that’s a little aggressive. The recent movement is predominantly North American based. In Europe and Asia, the culture of tea has been embraced for centuries, going as far back as 2737 BC when a tea leaf accidentally dropped into Chinese emperor Shen Nong’s kettle of boiling water. After just one sip, the emperor declared the taste refreshing. “So much of our tea culture was a mistake or accidental ... the story of tea is serendipitous really, said Self. Tea ceremonies have embodied Japanese,

Chinese, German, British and other countries’ traditions. Next to water, tea is the most consumed liquid in the world. But in North America, it’s only just catching on. With more people seeking out the health benefits of tea, its antioxidants and non-caffeinated options, and with a greater accessibility to finer blends, the culture in North America is only just beginning. Long gone are the days of bagged orange pekoe, now the options are endless: black tea, green tea, white tea, rooibos tea, spicy tea, smoked tea, Indian tea, Nepalese tea, Darjeeling tea, considered the “champagne of tea,

and more. “Tea is so much more than just a bag thrown in a cup, said Self, who grew up in New Orleans where the only tea he knew was Lipton iced tea. It wasn’t until he immigrated to Canada in the 1970s that he sipped his first brew of loose-leafed tea in a Chilliwack farmhouse. It was instant love, he said. “I did not know tea could taste that good. The whole world opened up for me. And that, he said, is what tea is all about – memories.

“We Serve

Presented by Mt. Cheam Lions Club

All service clubs have an agenda and, although their benefactors may vary, the main aim of all of them is to assist those in need. This is certainly true of Chilliwack’s service clubs. Our area has a number of Lions Clubs, Kiwanis, Kinsmen, Rotary, Knights of Columbus, Canadian Legions and others. We are proud of the fact that we work together on various projects and often the success of the project is a direct result of the combined efforts of the various organizations. My best example of people working together is our annual Walk’n’Knock campaign in which a number of service groups as well as a number of students help re-stock the Salvation Army Food Bank. Another good example is our recent Casino Night in which we joined forces with #280 Legion to raise funds for a worthwhile cause. This is consistent with service organizations working together. We work together rather than compete with each other. At our last meeting we were honored to have a number of Kiwanis members attend our meeting and observe what we do. We will soon reciprocate by having a number of our Mount Cheam Lions visit a Kiwanis meeting. This way both clubs gain an insight of the workings of the other. As well as Lions Clubs working in harmony with other service clubs, we also work with other Lions Clubs throughout the world. That is one reason we are the largest service organization in the world and a prime reason why our motto is “we serveâ€?. Some upcoming events in which we will be taking part is: Mills Meeker Golf Tournament – Kinkora, Sept. 10th Terry Fox Run – Sept. 18th Model Train and Hobby Show – Club News brought to you by: Oct. 15th-16th Johns Electronics Ltd. ‘Robust’ July seen in Chilliwack home sales Thanks to a cool and rainy month, the Chilliwack area posted a robust July in a typically sluggish time for house sales, said Mark Andersen, president of the Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board. A total of 179 homes sold in July, he said, which is up considerably from the 144 sales recorded last year in July, but down slightly from a month earlier. Sales were “par ticularly strong” in the middle- and upper-end market, according to statistics compiled by the board. “The local market saw a lot of interest in homes in the mid-$300,000 levels and up,” Andersen said.

“Due to strong inventory and continued low interest rates,” he said, “potential homeowners are taking advantage of this optimum time to negotiate on a move-up house or to buy their first one,” he said. The highest number of sales last month (30 of the 179) were in the $300,000 to $349,999 range, according to board statistics, followed by 23 homes in the $350,000 to $399,999 range, and 21 in the $400,000 to $499,999 level. Fifteen sales were over the half-million dollar mark. Housing inventor y in the Chilliwack area remains high, with 1,904 houses on the market. “The speculation remains that interest rates will inch up

towards the end of the year,” Andersen said. “Home sales typically slow down in August, which means sellers are hungry for a deal,” he said, so now is an “excellent time” for first-home buyers or those looking for a move-up home or an investment property. The real estate industry contributes “significantly to the financial health of communities, Andersen said, noting that sales in July totalled just over $55 million. “The various spin-offs from those sales – transaction and moving cost, furniture sales, etc – generate significant revenue for local businesses,” he said.

Progress Eric

Welsh 604.702.5572 • sports@theprogress.com

Retiring after decade of dragon-boating Eric J. Welsh, The Progress After more than a decade in dragonboating, Shelley Hayes claims she’s walking away. Retiring from the sport to pursue other interests. Sad to be leaving, but happy to be moving on to exciting new opportunities. We are skeptical. Listen to this woman talk about dragon-boating and her cherished Water Warriors team and you get the sense that this is a half-hearted retirement. She says this is it, but so did Brett Farve before he came back two or three or 15 times. Sometimes the pull is too strong, and a Vegas casino would put good odds on Hayes being back in a boat next summer. You see, dragonboating was merely a sport 11 years ago when Hayes took up a casual suggestion from a neighbor and gave it a try. She tried it. She liked it. She stuck with it and slowly it became so much more. “Because the team was composed of friends, and friends of friends, we were there for more than just winning medals,” Hayes explained. “We were all on a journey together, none of us knowing how it was going to go.” It all started so humbly, with a group of original Water Warriors practicing stroke technique in a church basement. “We set up chairs down there in kind of a boat formation, and we used broom handles to practice,” Hayes laughed. “I wish we’d taken pictures of it, because it must have been a sight. But that’s how keen we were, and we didn’t think there was anything odd about it.” Their goal was to compete at a regatta they’d heard about, a big one that happens at Vancouver’s False Creek every year.

So scant was their knowledge of the sport that they didn’t even know how many women were allowed on the dragon boat. They assumed 10. (correct answer, 20) “A ladies-only gym gave us almost free memberships and designed workout routines for all of us — the whole team met on Tuesday nights for aerobics,” Hayes recalled. “It was hard work, but all of us wanted to make it work. I think being part of that team inspired a competitive spirit that none of us knew we had.” The Water Warriors went to their first regatta with low expectations, simply hoping to have fun and get their feet wet. They ended up winning. “And we were that clueless that we didn’t know we’d won,” Hayes chuckled. “We all went home Sunday night. The following week we had a team meeting and the captain walked in with this rack of bronze medals.” Hayes started off as a paddler, but became the team’s coach when tendinitis in both elbows forced a change of plans. “I had to take a year off from boating or have surgery, and I didn’t want to do that,” she recalled. “I was thinking, ‘Oh no! What do I do? What do I do?’ So I ran out and got my coaching certificates and started doing that in 2005.” Hayes regretted having to give up paddling. “There was something about being on the water and being so focussed on what you’re doing,” she said. “It was kind of a Zen effect, and even though you’re working really really hard it just feels worthwhile to sink your blade into the water to make the boat go faster, in concert with 19 other women.” It didn’t take long for Hayes to fall in love with coaching and with her attention to detail and knack for organization, she turned out to be pretty good at it.

Shelley Hayes (left) has been a member of the Water Warriors women’s dragon boat team for 11 years. But the long-time paddler and coach says it’s time for her to retire from the sport. SUBMITTED PHOTO

“Dragon boating is an easy sport to learn but a difficult sport to master,” she said. “I’m always keeping my eyes peeled for things they’re doing that they shouldn’t be doing — tr ying to break bad habits so they can be more ef fective with their paddle. Dragon boating is all about teamwork. Hayes knew that as a paddler, but never fully appreciated the notion until she sat at the front of the boat. “We always did well when we all got along, but if there was some discontent for whatever reason, the boat didn’t

move as quickly,” she said. “When there’s harmony, I sit up at the front of the boat on my little tippy tiny seat, and I see them all knuckling down and giving it all they’re worth. And when you see them giving their heart and soul to the task, it’s pretty magical.” Dragon boating has provided Hayes with countless memories. The funniest moment was one that was scary at the time. At a late-April regatta in frigid Deep Cove, the Water Warriors were paddling under the guidance of a new steers

person who was having a little trouble keeping the boat on track. Facing towards the back of the boat, Hayes didn’t know there was a problem until their boat collided with another, throwing her into the water. “It was deadly scary because there were two tons of boat coming together and I was in the middle, with the lifejacket keeping me afloat,” she said. “Fortunately, I was able to duck my head down, and they pulled me out.” Her teammates remember her first words as she was fished out of the water. First, ‘Oh (rhymes with spit), my ear!’ because she’d gone to the regatta with a staph infection, and promised her doctor she wouldn’t get it wet. Then, ‘We haven’t

gone 50 metres yet! We can re-race!’ Hayes makes dragon boating sound so wonderful as she talks about the competition, the camaraderie, the support. Which brings us back to our original point. Why would she walk away, and can she actually follow through with it? “It’s a matter of time. Everything I do requires preparation, and I don’t have the time to do everything,” she said. “I teach preschool and I work at an elementary school. Both of those require preparation and this requires preparation and I don’t have any off time. I’m the only original member left, and it’s just time to let someone else take over.” Hayes says she will miss it desperately, par-

ticularly when spring rolls around and boats get back on the water. She wants to take up stand-up paddle boarding, but it won’t be the same. At a Tuesday night practice at Cultus Lake, her Water Warrior teammates gathered around to hear her talk, glancing at each other with knowing looks. One of them joked about Val, a team member who retires every year. As resolute as Hayes seems now, they suspect she may keep the window slightly open. “I really do think this is the end, and I don’t dare be out there on a Tuesday night with my paddle board, because I’ll cry,” Hayes said. “Or, maybe I’ll paddle up beside them and holler at them a bit. That might be fun.”

Rebels double up Huskers The final score looked better but the end result was another loss as the Chilliwack Huskers dropped a 28-14 decision to Victoria’s Westshore Rebels on Saturday. Chilliwack’s struggling B.C. Football Conference squad saw their record slip to 0-3. Victoria was led offensively by 19-yearold running back Niles Goguen. Goguen rolled up 62 yards rushing on just six carries, adding another 40 yards receiving for 102 yards of total offence. His efforts helped Victoria’s offence overcome an otherwise sloppy effort punctuated by two interceptions, two fumbles and one blocked field goal attempt. The Rebels led 9-0

early in quarter two on a two-point safety and a 19 yard touchdown run by quarterback Cat Todorovich. Victoria kicker Quinn Van Gylswyk boomed a couple kickoffs into the endzone for singles as the Rebels carried an 11-0 lead into halftime. The Huskers trailed 13-0 early in the second half before a 15 yard touchdown run by Adann Hendrickson cut the deficit in half. Mark Black replaced Todorovich behind center, leading Victoria on two crucial scoring drives to put the game away. The backup QB threw a touchdown toss to Goguen, then found Eric Eggleston on a 22 yard catch and run. Hendrickson led Chilliwack on a late eight play 90 yard drive, throwing a five yard touchdown pass to Jake McKinnon to wrap up the scoring, and make the final score more presentable.
