Tons O’ Fun With Watermedia

Painting Bold & Controlled Watercolor Landscapes

04/23/2018 - 04/27/2018 WKSHP-00724 Watercolor/Mix Level 2, $695 During this class I will strive to make watercolor fun and exciting for everyone, regardless of where they are in their art, with as much one-on-one time as possible. We will have critiques, offering positive ideas that you can do with your art. My goal is not to teach you to paint like I do, but to paint like you want to. Of course we will talk about composition, value, color, etc. We will work small, no larger than a half-sheet. There will be lots of demonstrations. On day one, I will look at each artist’s paintings and comment on them. This is a valuable tool for me to better understand what direction to take in helping you in your art. We will spend some time making cards…a lost art that I feel is very important. We will also cover: Wet in Wet, Dry brush, Color Mixing/Color Wheel, Brush Techniques, Washes, Palette Arrangement, Value, Composition, Thinking, Papers, and Lifting/Erasing. Joe Miller, founder and owner of Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff began his professional career as a pharmacist and drugstore owner. In the mid-1980s, he decided to follow his long-standing fascination with watercolor painting and later began selling art supplies in the drugstore. Now, Cheap Joe’s is a world renowned mail order and internet art supply business, with three retail stores in North Carolina. Joe is also an award winning artist and nationally known art instructor. In 2006, he received the prestigious Dolphin Medal of the American Watercolor Society designated for persons making outstanding contributions to watercolor and art in general. He is a lifetime member of the Florida Watercolor Society, the Watercolor Society of NC, and the High Country Watermedia Society. He has produced several instructional DVDs and YouTube tutorials, as well as being featured in numerous magazines and newspapers.

Sketchbook Journaling Comes to Life

05/07/2018 - 05/11/2018 WKSHP-00728 Watercolor Level 2, $525 http://www.lesliefehling.com

This class covers the basic concepts of watercolor painting but emphasizes the importance of learning to control pigment mixtures and washes for painting bold and luminous landscapes. Wes will demonstrate a number of techniques and strategies to help those struggling with watercolor “control” issues. Guided exercises early on will allow participants to create an effective wet-into-wet approach. Wes focuses on understanding processes as a means of achieving natural and expressive results. Participants will be challenged to think like an artist, and to experiment and take risks as they explore the possibilities of watercolor. Additional topics will be: Value Relationships, Color Harmony, and Design Principles. Participants typically remark that they are taking home a truckload of new information and some new perspectives, but also claim to enjoy the good humor and light-hearted moments experienced during the week of painting and learning. Wes Waugh is a watercolor landscape painter who has made the North Carolina High Country his home for the past 30 years. He began painting at the age of twelve, has held over twelve solo exhibitions, and has served as a workshop instructor, product consultant, guest presenter, and juror for a number of artrelated businesses and organizations. Simultaneously, Wes has held a full-time teaching and administrative position at nearby Appalachian State University, citing equal devotion to both career settings. He was one of the inaugural workshop instructors at Cheap Joe’s when the teaching facility first opened, and has been teaching at Cheap Joe’s ever since!

ALEXIS LAVINE

Seeing Beyond the Ordinary

05/29/2018 - 06/01/2018 (3.5 day) WKSHP-00734 Watercolor Level 2 & up, $ 495 http://www.alexislavineartist.com

Alexis will focus on painting the humble, ordinary subject. So often we feel like we have to find a dramatic, spectacular, exotic, picture-perfect subject before we can begin to paint. Quite often a fascinating, surprising, poignant subject is right at our feet, or in a corner of our home, overlooked and forgotten. Let’s explore some modest subjects and see how we can turn them into extraordinary paintings – with the right combination of solid drawing, creative design, good painting technique, imagination, humor, and fun! Painters in all media are welcome. There will be daily demos, critiques, and ample student painting time. This class is Tue., Wed., Thur., 9am—4pm, and 9am—1pm on Fri. There is no Monday class. Alexis believes that teaching is one of the most important things she does. She loves to share her passion for art by guiding others to reach their own creative goals, and she teaches with enthusiasm, commitment, humor, kindness, and humility. She has taught watercolor and drawing for over twenty years, traveling from California to the Caribbean to do so. She is a signature member of a number of watercolor societies, most notably the National Watercolor Society, and Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Her paintings have been published in Watercolor Artist Magazine, Splash, The Artistic Touch, The Best of Watercolor, and Creative Art Press instructional DVDs. Her paintings reside in collections throughout the country and overseas, and they can be found in galleries from the Mid-Atlantic to the Virgin Islands.

This experimental art workshop will open the door into the exploration of various combinations of mixed media, with an emphasis on water soluble paints and mediums. You will be encouraged to take risks and work beyond your traditional practice in pursuit of your own personal language. We will be mixing it up by exploring how gesso, acrylics, inks, mark making tools, collage, and much more, can be used to create texture and depth in your work. We will explore techniques to achieve a variety of effects, including layering, texturizing, glazing, and more, and then use these ideas to develop finished pieces. Emphasis will be placed on design and personal style. Jean will focus on still life, abstract and landscape subjects. Jean is the author of “Expressive Portraits: Creative Methods for Painting People”. She has been painting for over 20 years, balancing her strong teaching abilities, and writing with her continuing aspiration to convey her ideas in visual form. Jean has work placed in the Royal Collection in Winsor England, and has been honored with numerous National and International awards over the years. In 2005 Jean was the first recipient of the Federation of Canadian Artists Early Achievement Award, granted for her many honors, awards, international writing to promote art education, and consistent, exceptional painting. Jean Pederson has exhibited her work Internationally in China, London England, Stockholm Sweden, New York -United Nations, San Francisco, Mexico and across Canada.

This educational workshop is designed for those who would like to work looser and be more creative with watercolors. You will see a wide variety of landscape and floral demonstrations using brushes as large as 3” wide to start. Let’s face it; you can’t get tight with a 3” brush. The painting is then completed using mostly 1” and larger brushes. You will also learn how to use bristle brushes with watercolors for beautiful blending, textures, and washes. Topics include; working from photographs, building a strong composition, saving white paper and introducing rich darks, balancing positive/negative shapes to create depth and drama in your painting, creative color mixing, and so much more. All skill levels are invited to this workshop, but previous watercolor experience is definitely helpful. Sterling is a contemporary watermedia master. He holds signature member status in the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, and in the National Watercolor Society. In 2015, he was awarded a lifetime signature membership into the internationally renowned Whiskey Painters of America, the most unique and exclusive miniature painting society in the world. In 2013 Sterling was proudly accepted by invitation into the International Watercolor Society. He has been the featured artist in numerous books, magazines, and newspaper articles. Sterling is the author of the best selling North Light book “Creating Luminous Watercolor Landscapes, a Four Step Process”. He also designed a signature line of art products that are marketed internationally including a custom watercolor palette and brushes. Sterling also juries national and international art competitions. His award-winning paintings are in private and corporate collections worldwide.

Master The Fine Art of Colored Pencil

06/18/2018 - 06/22/2018 WKSHP-00740 Colored Pencil Level 1 & up, $525 http://www.maureenkillaby.squarespace.com

In this art workshop, learn how to create rich, vibrant colors and value by using colored pencils. The focus will be on learning Maureen’s painterly technique of bleeding colors to achieve a high level of richness and saturation that results in a “painting” instead of a drawing. Using photo references, you will create a beautiful bird painting while learning colored pencil techniques such as layering and creating textures, as well as basic drawing and painting principles that will apply to any subject. Both novice and expert students are welcome, and will be encouraged to explore their creativity. Maureen is originally from Oregon, then Washington State, and now, Texas. After receiving a law degree, Maureen picked up the pencil and began painting as a hobby. She quickly became obsessed with graphite and now teaches drawing, painting, graphite, and colored pencil classes for adults nationwide and privately. She is a professional artist who currently teaches Art at Tyler Junior College School of Continuing Studies in Texas, and has been teaching there for over 10 years. Believing in the importance of enriching young minds in the arts, she also teaches two young adult after school programs, and is the lead instructor for kids’ camps in the summer. Maureen received her first commission in 2001, and has since received additional commissions from corporations and families nationwide.

With a focus on light and color, this workshop will explore ideas for interpreting the subjects of nature in watercolor. You will learn a step-by-step approach for planning your composition that includes working with photos, creating a value sketch, and selecting colors for your painting. Possible subjects include flowers, birds, and other animals. Drawings and reference photos are provided so you can paint along as Susan demonstrates - or if you prefer, bring your own reference material and paint the subject of your choice. Each year new demos are created to provide skills that can be adapted to your own unique painting process. Susan has painted in watercolor for over 25 years. Her previous experience includes creating designs for the Dayspring Division of Hallmark Cards and exhibiting in juried outdoor art festivals throughout the Southeast. Susan’s paintings have been published in Splash 12, Splash 14, Splash 18 (North Light Books), and also International Artist Magazine. She is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina and her techniques are featured in the DVD “Painting in Living Color: Carolina Morning” (Artist Palette Productions). At the heart of Susan’s teaching is her love of being a lifelong learner.

Bring your own photo references of a dog or cat that you would like to paint, or photos are provided if you are taking the class to learn the basic techniques. The class includes handouts, demos, step-by-step instruction, and individual guidance and painting time. Edwina is a self-taught artist of painting animals in watercolor, and paints pet portraits on commission and for fun, in addition to her employment as the Workshop Coordinator for Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff. Watercolor painting is often said to be unforgiving or more difficult than other mediums. This Art workshop is for those who refuse to believe this myth and who are determined to have fun without struggling. Through small studies and step-by-step demonstrations, Keiko explains her no-fear methods and techniques that make watercolor exciting, and her approach will help students overcome the fear that is associated with watercolor. She also shares her decision-making process that enables students to understand key elements and how to apply them to their own paintings. Each demo is an example of how to take an initial inspiration to an impressionistic, yet expressive, painting that is strong in composition and content. This class is 9am-4pm, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday & 9am-1pm on Friday (no Monday class). Keiko was born in Kyoto, Japan and currently lives in San Diego, California. She embarked on a professional art career as a watercolor painter in 2005 after working in international relations and marketing. Since then, her work has earned many awards and recognitions on the national and international level. Her work appears in private and corporate collections in many countries. Her work has also been featured in numerous art publications. Keiko is also a sought-after workshop instructor, teaching watercolor courses both in the U.S. and abroad. She is currently a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, the American Watercolor Society, North American Watercolor Artists, and the American Impressionist Society.

Join us for inspiring demonstrations, lectures, encouragement and practice. You’ll learn how to coax hints of reality from an abstract background, how to control values and colors for emotional emphasis, and how to suggest rather than delineate. You’ll explore working intuitively, responding to what shows up, working in a series, mixing, and utilizing neutrals for softer, more ethereal abstracts. We’ll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, talent, play, inspiration, intuition, your mean critic, metaphor, symbolic elements, competition, marketing, your belief systems, finding balance, and more! Joan Fullerton holds BFA and MFA degrees in painting from the University of Wyoming. She was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award while an art professor at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, WY. Her work has been in galleries, juried shows and museums since the early 70’s and she has exhibited internationally. Fullerton’s art been published in the 2010 edition of Open Studios Press, Visual Journeys, Art of the 21st Century, and Journeys to Abstraction #3, and is featured in Acrylic Artist Magazine Spring 2017.

This workshop will help each student find his or her unique style and statement. Everyone is capable of this and must first make it a goal. The workshop begins with a 20-minute conversation with each student. He asks you to provide 3 digital images of your recent work so to identify strengths and weaknesses and make a plan for your time together. Some will set a course to improve techniques and design; others will pursue clarifying ideas and research for ways to give form to their ideas. Demonstrations, lectures, and slide presentations will be offered. All styles, (realism, abstract, or non-objective), are accepted. What you want to avoid is “painting like someone else”. So, bring lot of paper, canvas, pigments, and whatever you use to build your art, and dig in, have fun, work hard, and create unique images for which you will be truly proud. William B. (Skip) Lawrence, received a B.F.A. degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an M.A. degree from Towson University. His book, “Painting Light and Shadow in Watercolor”, was published in 1994. Skip is editor-and-chief of “The Palette Magazine”.

Dear Joe, I wanted to write you and tell you how much I enjoyed your watercolor workshop! Don’t settle for watercolors that just sit there! By keeping palette mixing to a minimum, placing pure color side by side, and applying other simple, but powerful tricks, you’ll create sparkling passages of color that attract your viewer’s eye, engage the imagination, and make your paintings glow with light. Inspired by the work of the great impressionists, Rose will show you how to use analogous and complementary colors to achieve lively, glowing color in your paintings. Each day will consist of several demonstrations and adequate practice time with individual help. At the end of each day there will be a constructive critique. Rose is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, where she has a master status. She holds a bachelor degree from North Park University and has studied at Colorado State University. After teaching art in the public school system, she has gone on to teach workshops in the US and abroad for almost 40 years. She has received numerous awards, including being chosen for the AWS traveling show on two occasions. Her work was featured on the cover and in an article in the French magazine: “The Art of Watercolour”. Rose has also been included in “Splash”, The Second Biannual Shanghai International show, and won first place in the animal/wildlife division of “American Artist” magazine. She has also been privileged to serve as juror of many art shows. Rose and Dee Jepsen are the authors of the book: “Color Harmonies”.

Explore color through a unique approach! In this art workshop, Ken reveals ‘color secrets’ and design ideas each day. He offers guidelines which encourage you to creatively interpret painting subjects in your own style. Painting demonstrations emphasize free flowing watercolor and cover a variety of subjects, including landscape, flowers, human figures or animals. Ken is passionate about his painting and teaching. He clearly explains his artistic method as he paints, and in a positive and gentle manner, skillfully pinpoints and verbalizes exactly what your painting needs for improvement. This makes the class ideal for beginning and advanced students. A typical day includes presentation of new ideas and demonstration in the morning with class work time and individual help in the afternoon. The workshop ends with an uplifting and informative critique session. Ken has been a guest workshop instructor for over 90 art organizations across the US and in exotic locations such as Hawaii, Italy, Greece and Mexico. His work has been featured in “The Artists’ Magazine”, “Watercolor Magic”, and “International Artist” magazine and he has produced a number of art instruction DVDs. Ken is a signature member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society, and his painting titled “Good Conversation,” was in the American Watercolor Society’s 2014 Annual Exhibition.

Cannot Say enough good things. I have never taken a week long workshop, but have taken several one day classes. I must say over all this was the best.

This workshop will be full of fun and surprises as you explore a variety of xtraord!nary watercolor procedures and techniques on watercolor paper and in the Color-Sketch books. Variation and simplification in design, influence of color and the use of abstract images are some of the essentials which will be explored. You will learn to see and understand Judi’s concept of “magical shapes”; as well as discover new ways to see and capture mood and emotion. The focus is to assist the artist in creating their own expressive paintings. Have fun with your paintings-making them dance and burst with excitement. Invent with lines, magical shapes, color mixing and compositional challenges. Judi is a talented, fun-loving leader; and a master of luminosity and spontaneity. Judi Betts AWS, NWS has authored two award winning books: “Watercolor … Let’s Think About It!” and “Painting … a Quest toward Xtraord!nary”. Internationally recognized, she is an experienced painter with over 150 awards in traditional watercolor and experimental techniques. Judi’s paintings are featured in more than 35 books. For 50 years, she’s taught painting workshops worldwide. Judi received the Louisiana Governor’s Award for Professional Artists and Watercolor USA Honor Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Recently, she was selected to participate in Invitational Exhibitions of Contemporary International Watermedia Masters in China. Creating watercolors that “sparkle” is her trademark, and “magical shapes” are her specialty.

Master your landscape painting and join Michael for this workshop as you’ll use the sky and water as a dramatic design element in your painting’s composition. The workshop begins with an I-Pad step-bystep presentation showing a progression of Michael’s painting techniques from start to finish. You’ll begin your painting with an initial charcoal drawing, followed by a color wash applied over the image. Starting with shadow colors, you’ll begin blocking in your painting, then progressing dark to light to completion. Building final layers of color and avoiding muddy mixtures, you’ll achieve fresh, bright color while capturing depth, drama and mood to your work. Michael earned a BFA in Fine Art from the University of South Carolina in 1976. He later traveled to New York, studying painting under internationally known artist, Daniel Greene. Today, Michael is an award-winning artist who regularly teaches painting, guest lectures, and juries art shows. It is amazing how taking a workshop can help take your art to the next level—I have taken many and appreciate all that I have learned from them and the many friends I have made in each class. It is one of the best gifts I have ever given to myself and my art. I could name lots more artists who have taken many workshops. I can name professional artists who regularly attend workshops. If you ask them why you might be surprised at their answers. “It keeps us young” - “It’s entertaining us while we learn” - “I wanted to jump start my art and it did.” I could go on and on. Each listing that follows includes the sponsoring organization in red, the instructors name, date, class level, location, and contact information. Enjoy! Joe
