From the Director Every day as the leader of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, I draw inspiration from the resilience and love that can be found in both the animals and people that come to the shelter. Incredible adopters are a constant reminder that people are the answer to ending animal homelessness. For example, Sally, who came to the CASPCA specifically to help the animal who needed her most and took home Kayleigh, a cat that had been waiting for a home for 646 days. I am proud to be the head of an organization that has been a leader in progressive animal sheltering for over a decade. In July of 2017, we were able to take our lifesaving capabilities to the next level with our Compassionate Care-A-Van. We purchased the state-of-the-art animal transportation unit thanks to a challenge grant by the Perry Foundation and donations from our generous community. We immediately put the Compassionate Care-A-Van to use transporting animals from other shelters for veterinary services and traveling to Houston and Atlanta in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma to help clear the shelters to make room for pets displaced by the storms. Since we received the Compassionate CareA-Van, we have rescued over 1,300 animals faced with euthanasia due to overcrowding in shelters. In 2018, the Compassionate CareA-Van made it possible for us to visit numerous shelters to rescue 923 animals at risk of euthanasia
due to overcrowding. But the Compassionate Care-A-Van is more than a transportation tool, it allows us to provide veterinary services to neighboring shelters, it’s a mobile adoption center, an educational resource and brings smiles everywhere it goes. Last year, the Compassionate Care-A-Van made 50 round trips to two neighboring shelters to bring approximately 360 animals back to the CASPCA for veterinary care. Thanks to the Compassionate Care-A-Van, we more than tripled the number of animals adopted at off-site adoption events compared with 2017. The Compassionate Care-A-Van has revitalized the CASPCA’s impact on our community and region. I am looking toward to the future and am excited about the new initiatives and programs that the CharlottesvilleAlbemarle SPCA will be sharing with you in 2019. We will be expanding our foster program. In 2018, we sent animals into foster care 2,630 times, 797 times more than in 2017. Over 100 more adult animals went into foster care in 2018 than in 2017, giving them much needed breaks from the shelter and improving their chances of adoption. We will be hosting four sessions of the Maddie’s® Field Trip and Sleepover Foster Apprenticeship, and representatives from shelters and rescue organizations nationwide will be learning how to save more adult dogs through short-term foster programs. In an effort to increase pet retention in our community, we are doubling the number of Compassionate Care Clinics we hold every year. All of our programs have one goal: increase the number of animals we save through adoption, rescue and owner retention. I cannot thank you enough for being a part of the CASPCA in 2018, and I hope that this publication will serve as a celebration of the work that we as a community of animal lovers have accomplished. When staff and volunteers at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA describe Norma Bailey, there are some words that everyone uses. Dedicated, devoted, amazing… Family. Norma has been volunteering at the CASPCA since June 2011 and has had a huge impact on the people and animals at our shelter. Norma started volunteering because she “thought the animals in the shelter needed someone.” She very quickly became a fixture at the shelter, socializing cats and helping the staff. In her 8,740 hours of volunteer work, Norma has done every aspect of providing care to cats. She has assisted with adoptions, cleaned cat cages, done laundry and dishes, restocked supplies and, as she put it, “just tried to help out any way I could.” Norma is especially well-known for her care of sick cats. She would spend time with cats that weren’t feeling well: brushing them, playing with them, and preparing special meals for them. Every day, she would create a mixture of wet food and dole out portions for each cat that she was looking after. Staff were always impressed by Norma’s commitment to volunteering. The now 94-year-old volunteer would never think of missing a shift. Maybe her discipline comes from her 24 years in the Army. Norma enlisted when she was 22 years old and was deployed to Germany in 1945.
One thing everyone can agree on, whether you want to call it grit, spirit, or backbone, Norma is a force to be reckoned with!
It simply says, “Our hero.” An article was written about Norma’s time in the Army, and it included a photo of her. The staff posted the photo in the room where Norma has given so much time caring for sick cats. Above the article, a note is handwritten. It simply says, “Our hero.” When asked whether she had any advice for someone thinking of volunteering at the CASPCA, Norma said, “Do it. It’s something that is appreciated by the people and animals at the shelter.” 2

Employee Spotlight Sara has been a part of the CASPCA team for almost five years. She started out in the clinic and learned about every aspect of working in an animal shelter. Her care for animals and people is evident in everything she does. Sara recently chatted about working at the CASPCA while she snuggled one of her favorite animals at the shelter, Gladys.
How did you get into animal welfare as a career? I always wanted to work in animal welfare. I actually have a degree in Criminal Justice because I thought I wanted to work as an animal control officer, but it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. Then I applied to work in the clinic at the CASPCA. I was offered a position and, once I had my foot in the door, I knew animal welfare was where I belonged. I’ve learned so much here.
What is it about animal welfare that you’re passionate about? Really, preventing animal cruelty and investigating cases. I’m very interested in legislation to improve conditions for animals, and education to strengthen responsible pet ownership.

Sara Lutz, Animal Care Manager What is your favorite thing about working for the CASPCA? My favorite thing is how well everyone works together. It’s like a big family. We’re all here for the same purpose.
What is one of your favorite memories? I can’t remember which birthday, but one year, for Norma Bailey’s birthday, we threw her a surprise party at the shelter. We all got together to make sure she would come in that day, had food and cake and celebrated her! She loved it so much and it’s like I said, we’re a family. She’s amazing and a huge part of our lives. We all look out for each other and the animals.

Sela For 1 year, 2 months and 17 days, there was a black cat named Helga that ruled a little room in the CASPCA. She was the queen of a tiny kingdom filled with toys and scratching posts. In addition to a window for her to gaze outside, there was a miniature swimming pool for her to play in. But despite her relatively luxurious accommodations, Helga had a reputation as a grump… Maybe it was because she was lonely or maybe she was just unhappy being in the shelter, but Helga didn’t get along with other cats and she didn’t always like the people she met. Then in August, a family looking for their first cat came to the CASPCA. 5
Evan, Amber and little Melody met Helga and decided that an adult cat with a strong personality was exactly what they wanted. When Helga left the shelter, there were definitely tears of joy from staff and volunteers. Now she goes by Sela, and she still plays in the water. Her family kept a little pool out for her at first, but have transitioned to leaving a little water in the bathtub at all times. Sela waits impatiently for people to get out of the bath so she can get in to drink and play. And her favorite toy is the little plastic fish that came home with her from the shelter. Sela left her grumpiness behind when she found a home. She lives with two dogs, and as long as everyone understands she’s the queen, she’s a very laid-back cat. Sela allows Melody to pet her and has been the perfect cat to help Melody learn the meaning of the word “boundaries.”
Sela’s family loves her personality. They think she has a mysterious quality that makes her different from any other animal. When they adopted Sela, she walked straight into the carrier. Amber said, “It’s kind of like she chose us.”
“It’s kind of like she chose us.” Amber has no regrets about having Sela as the first cat for her family. “Having her has taught us so much. Even though I grew up with cats, as I’ve matured, I’ve learned a lot and have come to appreciate them more.” Sela has even turned Evan, a life-long “dog person” into a “cat person.” Sela’s attitude and individual nature have softened his heart and helped him appreciate felines. Sela’s family says that adopting her was “definitely a lifechanger.”
Mister Ed Mister Ed’s condition when he came to the CASPCA as a stray didn’t exactly scream “family pet.” He was thin, his coat was filthy, his ears were split and scarred. He was treated for just about every parasite you can think of. He wasn’t going to be winning any Best in Show awards... But sometimes all it takes for an animal to be adopted is for their photograph to reach the right person. Mister Ed had been available for adoption for about a month, and, if we’re being honest, he blended in a little bit with all the other houndtype dogs at the shelter. So when a man came in with his kids and said that they were there to meet Mister Ed, we were a little surprised. Roger had seen Mister Ed on the CASPCA website and explained that Mister Ed reminded them of
their last dog, Elvis. Roger and the six kids met Mister Ed and decided to take him home the same day. Now the hound dog that came to the CASPCA with all the physical signs of having lived outdoors never has to spend a moment alone. In addition to the six kids he met when he was adopted, he also has two of their cousins living with him. That’s a total of eight kids to get treats from, snuggle with and play around with. And maybe even sometimes dance!
“Sometimes she puts music on to dance with him to.” Mister Ed likes to dance with Roger’s middle daughter. He places his paws on her shoulders and they sway. Sometimes she puts music on to dance with him to. The family kept his name because “it
just seemed to fit him.” He’s doing very well in their home, although he’s become a little protective of his kids and will bark. And it’s no wonder that he wants to protect them. They do a lot of caring for him. The older boys take turns giving him walks every morning and evening. Everyone pitches in to make sure that Mister Ed has everything he needs. You’d think that with that many youngsters ranging from 17 years old to two years old, Mister Ed would get a little worn out. But he loves having other kids over to the house! When there are playdates and friends come over, Mister Ed is right there. He’s always well-behaved and likes to be around everyone. When asked whether he had any advice for someone interested in adopting a hound mix, Roger said, “Make sure you have lots of room and companionship for him!” It’s safe to say to Mister Ed will never lack for companionship and love now that he’s found his family. 6

Beginner Family Dog Class — A brief introduction to the behaviors your dog needs to be a great companion. Through this class, you will learn to communicate more effectively with your dog, improve teamwork and have fun together. Through positive reinforcement and clicker training, your dog will learn to perform watch me, sit, down, leave it, recalls and stays. Puppy Manners — Your puppy will love off-leash play with other puppies and learning basic obedience. Socialization and play is an important part of your pup’s development. This class introduces your puppy to the cues he/she will need to be a great family dog, such as sit, down, leave it and coming when called, using positive reinforcement and clicker training. Puppy issues (housebreaking, chewing and jumping on people, etc.) will be covered as well.

Why adopt from the CASPCA?
Two hours after returning from vacation, our sweet teenage dog, Lady, passed away from a heart condition. My husband and I felt an emptiness in our home and began the search for another dog. Why Foster? Our incredible network of foster families gives these animals a chance to relax or recover away from the stress of the shelter. Foster home candidates include kittens and puppies who are too young to be spayed or neutered, nursing mothers, animals recovering from surgery or illness and animals that need extra training or socialization. Crutchfield Unleashed Shelter Initiative In 2018, Crutchfield donated a variety of smart pet products, and we monitored animals using the tracking devices. Crutchfield’s Emily Sohr (also a CASPCA volunteer!) wrote an article about the initiative.
Things We Learned From Our Local Shelter Pets
How smart pet products can tackle common health and behavior issues in dogs and cats.
Many of us at Crutchfield are pet parents who’ve been using pet tech to improve the lives of our own animals since we added the category in 2017. So we were excited to see whether we could extend our reach to help shelter animals by using the same technology.

Some very common problems in shelters involve weight management, anxiety and destructive behavior. Shelter staff chose dogs and cats who met the criteria. Then, each pet had a solution plan created to meet the
goals identified in their health and behavior assessments. Donated products included the FitBark 2 activity monitor, iFetch products, PetSafe Laser Cat Toys and Pet Acoustics Pet Tunes. Losing weight is hard! Dogs get some exercise, but not enough to compensate for the mostly sedentary lifestyle they live at the shelter. The FitBark 2 activity monitors we used in this study enabled shelter staff to track each dog’s “Bark Points.” One of the most telling statistics we got was thanks to one of our control dogs, Max. He received only about 12,000 – 13,000 points a day at the shelter. When he went to a foster home, his points surged to a whopping 50,000+ per day. Soothing music can really help alleviate anxiety. Staff rotated the Pet Tunes speakers to different areas of the shelter and noticed significant stress reduction in both cats and dogs where the speakers were in use. Bentley was very shy and used to cower in
a corner during the day and be destructive at night. His activity tracker showed that as he became more confident and less anxious, he started moving around more during the day and was no longer destructive at night. While there’s no substitute for a forever home, we were happy to be able to provide some muchneeded enrichment to our local shelter animals. Our hope with all our smart pet products is to make pets healthier and happier, and, in the case of shelter pets, more adoptable. Are you an animal lover? Tail Wagging Transformations
of 2018 Gus had a severe skin infection, an abnormal eye and a mass on his tail. We removed the eye and the mass and his skin is much better. Gus was adopted!
Denise had skin that was
severely infected, eyes that were nonfunctional and caused her discomfort, masses and dental disease. After a lot of work by our clinic, Denise was pain-free and was adopted!
Cardigan came to the
CASPCA with a large wound on her back and flank. She became a clinic favorite and was adopted!
Sugar Brown was very thin and dirty when he arrived at the CASPCA. His skin and eyes were irritated. He struggled at first to get healthy, but eventually started eating normally. Sugar Brown was adopted!

Birthday Parties Celebrate your child’s birthday at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. Let us create a birthday experience they’ll never forget, with a shelter tour, fun games and a visit from real “party animals.” Birthday parties are available for children ages five to 12, on select Saturdays and Sundays. Parties are available during two time slots: Noon-1:30PM and 3PM-4:30PM.

In 2018, the CharlottesvilleAlbemarle SPCA started collaborating with John Paul Jones Arena in order to give people who have been on the road and may be missing home a nice surprise. How? With puppy therapy!
So far, puppies have gone out to support the Chris Stapleton and Dave Matthews Band tour groups. We have even had adoptions from bringing puppies to JPJ! It’s outreach that brings so much joy to everyone that participates, and we are excited to continue it in 2019!

A huge hit for both two-legged and four-legged friends alike, the 2018 bow-WOW-walk attracted more than 400 walkers and their pets! The 2019 walk kicks-off at IX Art Park and winds through Charlottesville’s historic downtown mall before returning to IX Art Park for a post-walk festival.
