JM Classmates Connect and Invest for Positive Impact

Unbeknownst to each other, four classmates from James Monroe High School found themselves together at Live Ballot awaiting the announcement of the grant awardee. Anna Harrington Lee, Stacy Olsen Horne, Barbara Danahy Ehman, and Debra Parker McNeil (pictured left to right) are all 1980 graduates who reconnected at the event hosted by The Community Foundation.

During the annual Live Ballot, attendees have the opportunity to learn about the grant finalists and their projects and vote for the one organization they would like to support.

This year’s Live Ballot took place May 9th at the Mary Washington Monument, the first U.S. monument ever erected by women for a woman, in Fredericksburg.

Members of the Women and Girls Fund voted to award this year’s $50,000 grant to Empowerhouse, for its Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP). The protocol is a tool which enables law enforcement officers to identify victims of domestic violence who are at the highest risk of being injured or killed by their intimate partners, and immediately connect them with local services through Empowerhouse.

“We have people standing by for that call,” said Kathy Anderson, Executive Director Empowerhouse. “When we can speak to them right there when law enforcement is

still on the scene, it’s safe for them to talk to us and make those connections to shelter and other support services. They realize they have a support system.”

Fund members also heard from the Rappahannock Area Health District, which applied for grant funding to support the Every Woman’s Life (EWL) program, providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings and follow-up services to lowincome, uninsured Virginia women.

The health district sought an outreach worker who goes to community gathering places to spread the word, in English and Spanish, about the importance of screening and the availability of these services.

“Many of the women we serve haven’t been screened in many, many years because they don’t have that opportunity,” said Michelle Clayton, the program’s coordinator.

Since 2009 The Women and Girls Fund has been granting money to local nonprofits who make a positive impact on the lives of women and girls in the region.

Attending the Live Ballot this year allowed the classmates to reconnect, share their experiences, and support causes they care about. It’s a chance to come together and collectively contribute to the betterment of the community.

Full Circle

Kathy Salvas identified The Community Foundation as an easy vehicle for her giving when her financial advisor, Ben Maxwell of Edward Jones, provided some options for her generosity. In October 2013 when she established her fund, she chose to give to organizations that address the needs of women and girls in the Rappahannock River region. Years earlier, working with the Alexandria Police Department in the juvenile section, Kathy saw firsthand how the victims of domestic violence needed programming to break the cycle for their children.

“Women couldn’t get out and daughters could be headed in the same direction,” Kathy reflected.

Crafty Approach

Jump to May 2023 when an organization vying for the Women and Girls Fund grant at Live Ballot were suggesting just such programming, Empowerhouse’s Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP). Kathy was able to cast her vote, along with other fund members, toward an issue she has been supporting for many years and from many angles.

Her gift has completed a full circle, starting with her identification and contribution to a cause she deeply values, and now benefiting expert organizations working towards solutions for that very same issue.

Joe Schmidt knows construction and Sharon Schmidt knows The Community Foundation. So, when it came time to create a charitable fund, they knew what they wanted to accomplish but just needed a little help in getting there. Sharon sat down with Teri McNally, Executive Director of The Community Foundation, and told the story of what her husband sees in the construction business today.

“We need more people in this industry. Joe and I want to help students that are just getting into the field of construction,” said Sharon.

What are the greatest needs for these students? Teri immediately called Jessica Thompson, Executive Director of Germanna Community College Education Foundation.

“Often times we can get them funding for classes but the costly tools of the trade is where students need help,” Jessica explained.

Together, they worked on language that would allow students to apply for a grant to purchase tools, protective equipment or clothing in their chosen trade.

By offering grants for the purchase of tools and other essential items, the fund aims to alleviate the financial burden on students and ensure they have the necessary

resources to succeed in their chosen trade. This approach recognizes that while funding for classes and education is often available, students may face challenges in acquiring the tools of the trade, which are crucial for their practical training and professional development.

“The hardest part was determining the fund name,” jested Sharon.

After the foundation made the fund focus and process easy, they settled on the name, The Schmidt Construction Trade Fund. Grants will be available for local students enrolled in an industry or construction training and certification program in either a high school or a community college.

On Target

Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation and Events (FXBG PRE) is clearing the spot at Motts Run Reservoir Recreation Area for the new archery equipment thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Duff “McDuff” Green Jr. Fund of The Community Foundation. This dedicated location will meet the growing demand for their archery program.

“Archery will have a specific area in a safe spot we can use anytime,” explains Callie Brown, Superintendent of Recreation.

The primary obstacle to a comprehensive archery program was the initial cost of the much-needed new equipment. Seeing how

Unique Experience

popular the program was locally, Jennifer Cassarotti, Assistant Director, applied for the grant to expand the archery program. This investment enables the program to cater to various audiences including; classes, events, camps, as well as school groups.

Learning archery offers numerous benefits, including enhanced hand-eye coordination, a positive impact on mental health, discipline, focus, and patience. Recognizing the invaluable life skills that archery instills in individuals of all ages, FXBG PRE believes that an archery program will contribute to the development and growth of the city’s youth.

The Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra (FSO) had extra reasons to celebrate their sold-out, season finale concert, “Symphony at the Cinema, The Great Film Scores.”

They utilized a $5,000 grant from the Duff “McDuff” Green Jr. Fund of The Community Foundation to invite budding musicians to explore sections of the orchestra including

“The Community Foundation is not new to me. I applied for this grant knowing I wanted to do a petting zoo but not yet knowing how I would give a unique experience to the kids.” said Kevin Bartram, Music Director of FSO. To do that, FSO expanded the idea to include an opportunity for a few lucky children to actually be on stage during the performance of Disney’s original Aladdin

“We’re delighted about the grant for Fiddlestix,” exclaimed Audra Bielke, Executive Director of FSO. She knew that this grant would allow them to be creative to deepen the musical experience for local children.

FSO wants to really spark an interest in musical instrument performance. The principal musicians were enthusiastic about the project and had prepared kid-friendly excerpts to demonstrate the sounds and capabilities of their instruments. They also provided secondary instruments for the children to try, with the aim of igniting their interest in learning to play an instrument from a young age.

Recognizing the importance of nurturing future audiences, the Fiddlestix event primarily targeted elementary-age children. By introducing them to the world of classical music and helping them discover their passion for playing instruments, the orchestra hoped to encourage them to join their school ensembles. Bartram also leads the orchestra at James Monroe High and Walker-Grant Middle Schools.
