The extended voting period in the 2023 Riverbay Board of Directors election will end at 8:59 p.m. next Friday, June 9, and shareholders who have not yet voted are once again encouraged to do so as soon as possible to ensure the quorum is met without further delay.

This year’s quorum requires 5,002 ballots. As of press time Friday, 4,255 ballots had been received by YesElections, requiring an additional 755 ballots to make the quorum and avoid another extension, should the 2023 Election Committee choose to exercise that option.

CCPD’s Lieutenant Torres Promoted to Captain

Six weeks ago, I began the journey with Riverbay Corporation. The expedition has been pleasing as I navigated through the core business functions of the Corporation and establishing an understanding of the manner in which we deliver services to the shareholders of Co-op City.

Coupled with the above, the political landscape for Co-op City was the recent focus during this journey. A “Meet and Greet” was conducted with Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, City Councilman of the 12th District, Kevin Riley; State Assemblyman of District 82, Michael Benedetto, and Senate District 36, State Senator Jamaal T. Bailey. These meetings were very helpful and shed light on their commitments to this community as well as the constituents who reside in Co-op City.

Early Voting for NYC Primary Election in Two Weeks

New York City’s 2023 primary election takes place this month, starting with an early voting period from June 17 to June 25.

Primary Election Day is scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, 2023

Shareholders interested in voting early can do so at Dreiser Community Center. During the early voting period, polls will be open during the following hours, as outlined on the NYC BOE website:

June 17: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

CCPD responded to a call of a male on the roof. Upon arrival, a male was observed walking down from the roof landing. The male was identified as a cooperator and was issued a Community Complaint for Unauthorized Access to the Roof.

177 Dreiser Loop

CCPD responded to a call about a large group of teens fighting in the Dreiser Mall. One non-resident teen repeatedly attempted to hit a CCPD supervisor with closed fists; that teenager was arrested as a juvenile. The teenage female’s mother was notified and was present at CCPD base. After processing with the NYPD Juvenile Desk, the teenage female was released to her mother.

A cooperator reported that a confirmed delivered package was removed from the vestibule of his building by an unknown individual. Investigation is continuing.

2099 Asch Loop

A cooperator reported returning to her parked vehicle in Garage 5 and observing that the passenger side rear window was smashed and the steering wheel tampered with by an unknown individual attempting to remove the air bag. No property was observed missing from the vehicle.

Rear of Building 24, on the Street

A cooperator reported returning to her parked vehicle and noticing that an unknown individual had hit her vehicle damaging the passenger side front door and driving off.

900 Baychester Avenue

A cooperator reported that a confirmed delivered package was removed from the vestibule of the lobby by an unknown individual. The investigation is continuing.

Co-op City Little League Baseball Field

A cooperator flagged down CCPD and advised them of a parked vehicle with a broken window. Upon further investigation by CCPD, the ignition on the steering column was broken and the glove compartment and console had been rummaged through. Attempts to locate the owner of the vehicle by CCPD were unsuccessful.

100 Donizetti Place

CCPD responded to a call for a suspicious person sleeping in the stairwell on the 11th floor. Upon arrival, a non-resident juvenile was observed and stated that he had a verbal dispute

with his mother and left home. The juvenile’s mother was contacted but was unable to pick him up. She authorized a family member to do so and the juvenile was released in good condition to the family member.

A cooperator reported returning to his vehicle which was parked in Garage 6 and observing that his catalytic converter was removed from his vehicle by an unknown individual without his permission.

A cooperator reported that an unknown person used a rock to break his glass tabletop in the rear of his residence.

A cooperator reported that a confirmed delivered package was removed from in front of her apartment door without her permission.

Upon performing a building inspection, CCPD observed two cooperators, a male and a female, loitering on the staircase on the 14th floor. Both cooperators were issued Community Complaints for loitering.

A Food Universe manager reported that an unknown male entered the store and removed five packages of meat from the store without paying and exited the store in an unknown direction.

A Food Universe employee reported that an unknown male entered the store and removed five containers of body lotion without paying and exited the store in an unknown direction. The investigation is continuing.

Also remember that your Co-op City apartment must be restored to the original condition no matter how nice improvements are and you will be responsible for the cost of that restoration.

It is also important to make sure the contractor meets licensing and registration requirements. The New York City Department of Consumer Affairs, (212) 487-4444, www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/dca/home.html, or the Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau Office of the Attorney General, (212) 416-8300, www.oag. state.ny.us. You can check with these agencies or the Better Business Bureau, (212) 533-6200, www.newyork.bbb.org, to see if there are any complaint records against an intended contractor or repair service.

Make sure your contractor is insured. They should have personal liability, property damage and worker’s compensation insurance for workers and subcontractors. Also check with your insurance company to see if you are covered for any injury or damage that may occur. Be sure valuables are locked up while work is being done in your home.

Insist on a written contract that details the entire scope of the job. Be sure it states exactly what will be done, when it will be done and the quality of materials to be used. Any warranties or subcontractors should be listed. The total price and schedule of payments should be included. Make certain you understand all payment options and any financing charges. Never make a final payment or sign a final release until you are satisfied with the work performed. Paying by credit card may give you any extra avenue of dispute resolution.

Always be cautious of the deal that seems too good to be true. Be wary if the contractor comes door-to-door to seek you out or just happens to have material left over from another job. Be alert to a contractor who quotes you a price that is out of line with other estimates. Do not allow a contractor to pressure you to make an immediate decision or who asks you to pay for the entire job up front. Be cautious of a contractor driving an unmarked van or a vehicle with out-ofstate plates.

Always remember, if you see something, say something. Call 911 and the Department of Public Safety at (718) 671-3050. Callers may remain anonymous when giving information. It is by your actions that the crime rate remains low and a high quality of life is maintained.

Bridge Closure

As a result of ongoing maintenance, two alternating northbound lanes of the Hutchinson River Parkway Bridge will be closed. The lane closures will occur overnight between 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. for two weeknights each week between June 5 and June 30.

The entrance ramp from eastbound Pelham Parkway connecting to northbound I-95 Bruckner Expressway will be closed through June 29. Drivers looking for access to northbound I-95 Bruckner Expressway from eastbound Pelham Parkway are advised to follow the detour signs posted.

Permanent Closure of Exit 8C

Since October of 2022, Exit 8C, which connected northbound I-95 Bruckner Expressway to westbound Pelham Parkway, has been permanently closed. Drivers traveling on northbound I-95 can still access westbound Pelham Parkway via Exit 8B.

Reminder –Feeding animals

Shareholders are reminded that it is a violation of your lease to place food out for animals to eat. A Community Complaint may be issued for littering to anyone who puts food out for any reason. Wellintentioned cooperators may think they are putting food out for stray cats or birds, but the food ends up attracting rats, raccoons, skunks, coyotes or other animals which can be a threat to residents.

Voters will also be choosing between Tess Cohen and Darcel D. Clark for Bronx District Attorney in the Democratic Primary.

For shareholders curious about voter registration deadlines, NYC BOE has to receive any in-person or mail-in registrations by June 17. June 12 is the last day NYC BOE will accept an absentee ballot application through mail, telefax or the absentee request portal. June 26 is the last day to apply in-person for an absentee ballot. Additional voter registration deadlines can be found online at Vote.nyc or by calling the Bronx Board of Elections at (718) 299-9017. Voters should also remember that this election uses a ranked choice voting system to decide the winner.

Ranked choice voting is a system designed to give voters more of a voice in deciding their elected pubcandidate with a majority of votes.

Looking ahead to the fall, Election Day will take place on November 7 with an early voting period between October 28 and November 5.

Extension to Vote: The Riverbay Board of Directors’ election was extended to June 9. Something must be done, and a change needs to happen. Our suggestion is the Election Committee should reach out to every shareholder by invitation to a town hall setting for only the low vote count buildings. In this town hall meeting, shareholders would have the opportunity to explain why they do not vote and abide by the responsibility laid out in their leases. The main reason also is to educate shareholders as to what is at stake and the purpose of the Board of Directors. We do not recall this ever being offered to the community.

Assemblyman Benedetto’s Coffee with Mike in Section 5 Pizzeria on May 27 (pictured left) provided information and allowed for discussion with shareholders. There are a few items SFA discussed. Thank you, shareholders, as quite a few showed up and discussed a wide range of topics. One shareholder complained because of Covid-19 and discontinuation of the MetroCard bus in April 2020. The MetroCard bus limited service restarted December 2022, however, with just one month. We are asking all three community MetroCard Bus locations be restored.

In our experience, there is a long wait for the Bx23, the only bus that travels to Pelham Bay, and we should have at least two buses.

The Riverbay Board of Director’s election is now! Voting is your responsibility as a Co-op City cooperator. Mail the ballot in, read the statements of the candidates and make your decisions. If you do not vote, you cannot blame anyone for who is elected.

Also, why is no one asking what is going on with commercial leasing? Is there an outside vendor doing the leasing and identifying spaces? Are there programs solicitating people to operate spaces? Where do they advertise?

New event programs are coming and new interesting musical and theatrical events as well. Read the Co-op City Times for community information. I was able to catch-up on the details of the debates, thanks to the Co-op City Times Regarding recycling gently-used articles, you can recycle them at the front or rear of Garage #6 in the blue and pink bins. The dumpster pad bins are used as follows: the white bin is for paper, while green and blue are for all other house garbage. Mattresses are required to be covered. Use pedestrian bins for masks. It is so important not to litter. Do not leave bags of clothes on dumpster pads or next to recycling bins.

Seniors, register with the Riverbay “RUOK” emergency contact program. This is critical for those living alone or with chronic illness. Seniors, get involved with JASA.

NCNW National – On May 18, NCNW, in collaboration with Black Women’s Roundtable, sent a letter on the Federal Budget to the White House and Congressional leadership, urging them to reject any policy changes that would increase poverty or threaten the health care and well-being of all Americans, including millions of children. In this letter, we expressed disappointment in political leaders’ attempts to resolve this crisis by placing undue burdens on our nation’s most vulnerable citizens. The letter also encouraged the President to seek solutions that create more equitable outcomes for the American people.

Good day.

I posted a note in the lobby to encourage shareholders to vote. A handwritten response was scribbled anonymously on the notice and it implied that I was using scare tactics to get people to vote when it does not matter because nothing gets done anyway. I have a few questions for that cooperator. Have you encountered a problem with Riverbay, did not get satisfaction, attended a building meeting and reported this to the Building 33 Association? Did you notify the Section 5 Association? Did you write an email to any of the Board members, your liaison to Riverbay? Before I became president and the time changed, the garage lighting was still on the old schedule and it was extremely dark when I left for work. After not getting satisfaction from anyone else, I emailed every Board mem-ported it, and the problem was solved. So, please do not say nothing gets done. When a problem is mentioned to your Building Association, we do try to help. I know it can be a daunting experience when you have an issue and it appears no one is helping you. But there are ways to get every single person on that Board to help you. You must ask for help. I can be contacted at amayo14033@gmail. com. In the meantime, get those green envelopes out and vote! Memorial Day – Thank you to the brave men and women who have made around the world, we honor you today and every day. It was a beautiful day with comfortable weather. We trust all enjoyed.

The Building 27 Association expresses our thanks to Mr. Aaron Carnegie who presided over the Association meeting on May 18. We also were delighted and thank both of our Guest Speakers: our new Riverbay Executive General Manager Marvin Walton and Deputy Manager Warren Mitchell for taking time out of their busy schedule to come and share information and communicate with the shareholders. Remember, Mr. Walton encouraged the cooperators to read the Coop City Times over the next few months as he will be submitting a manager report. Mr. Walton informed us he will share with the cooperators several items he will focus on in the coming months, working along with the Board of Directors, to ensure accountability on all levels of the corporation.

Extension to vote – The Riverbay Board of Directors election was extended to June 9. Why? Every year, there is a Board of Directors election. The Election Committee is aware of the low count buildings of shareholders who do not vote each year. My suggestion would be to meet with these buildings in a town hall setting with an invitation by letter. This would give the shareholders the opportunity to explain the reason as to why they do not vote and to educate them as to the purpose of the Board of Directors. Co-op City has a long waiting list. Every shareholder was fortunate enough to be chosen from that list. Should we revisit our leases as to the responsibility of every shareholder and not just a few who live in the Co-op City buildings?

Emergency Food Pantry (Free): 920 Baychester Ave., Bldg. 1A (entrance faces basketball court). The pantry opens Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11:00 a.m.-12:45 p.m. for grocery distribution. Guests are eligible to pick up food once a month. Look at the last date on your pantry card. The next pick up would be one month from the last pick up or after. It is a 30/31-day rotation on average. Black Forum will text registered guests if items outside of regular distribution become available. All guests must present a pantry card to receive food.ping cart. Greetings, my fellow shareholders. I truly hope you all had a safe Memorial Day weekend and are enjoying our community fair today.

We want to thank all of you that came out to our Building Association Election meeting on May 8. The following members were elected or reelected: president, Deborah D. Henry of Building 11C; vice president, Magdalene Lewis of Building 11A; treasurer, Hattie Robinson of Building 11C; secretary, Toniond co-secretary, Mattie Witherspoon of Building 11B. Thanks to everyone who made a donation to the Building 11 Association during our annual dues collection. We will have our annual Section 2 Summer Fun Day event on June 24 from 12 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Rain Date: June 25 from 12 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.) As always, a lot of fun activities with prizes for all ages have been planned, so come out and enjoy the day with your community and building neighbors.

Our AARP Chapter #4997 holds a general membership meeting each month from September – June and the last one for this year is June 12. The meeting will be held at 177 Dreiser Loop, Room 1, at 1 p.m. We will be celebrating with our new and renewed friends for the accomplishments we have had this year. Our chapter does not hold general meetings during the summer months, but technology classes to the seniors of Co-op City. Our partner, C.O.M.E. We were especially blessed by the announcement made by our Presiding Bishop, Archbishop Celia Jose, who named Bishop Terrence Wilburg as Bishop for the Diocese of New York. Sunday Worship Experience

Our Sunday worship experience starts with celebration. We make music to please God and to build others up. (Colossians 3:16) says, “Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.” For us, that is what making music is all about. We sing to bring glory and honor to God and celebrate who he is and what he is doing in our church! Our Adult Worship Experience starts every Sunday morning at 11 a.m. in Room 45.

Newsong Deaf Church 11 a.m. Sunday Mornings

That is right. We are happy to announce that we now have an adult ASL worship experience for the deaf and hearing impaired in our community! The singing, the message and the fellowship are all in American Sign Language and designed to help you connect with God in your own language! Our Adult Deaf Worship Experience starts every Sunday morning at 11 a.m. in Room 38.

Kidsong: Kids are important to us, so we have

created a place where they can learn about Jesus on their level. Every Sunday, pre-k through sixthgrade children experiences safe, age-appropriate environments where the Bible is taught in a creative and relevant way. Kidsong starts every Sunday morning at 11 a.m. in Room 49.

Newsong Church Youth: NSCY is Newsong’s student ministry. Today’s middle and high school students will lead the next generation of the church and change the world. At NSCY, our goal is to graduate students into a lifetime of following Jesus. NSCY meets every Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Room 38.

• In celebration of St. Joseph’s Day, the Congrats, to the winners. They were holders of ticket #2732 for the ticket #1041 for the third prize. After the drawing, everyone enjoyed the sumptuous lunch and desserts that were provided.

General Meeting: Our next regularly scheduled general meeting is Tuesday, June 13, at 12 p.m. This will be the last meeting before the summer break for July and August. Organization Membership: On behalf of the board of the Coalition, I want to announce that we gained a new member organization during the May meeting, Bartow Swingers. In April, the president of the Coalition, Dr. Oloruntoba, paid a courtesy call to the group in one of their sessions in Bartow. After explaining the Coalition agenda, and answering some notable questions from the audience, the president, through the members of her group, voted to join the Coalition. Thus, I say a big and hearty congratulations to Sharon, the leader of the group, for stepping up to be part of this group.

I want to say thank you to the organizations that have paid their dues, including St. Joseph’s Church, Co-op City Baptist Church, American Legion, Retirees of Dreiser Loop, and the African-American Association. New York City Councilman Candidates’ Forum

The Election 2023 is here, and it seems most people are unaware, especially here in Co-op City, as the Board of Directors election is also ongoing. In view of this, the Coalition of African-American Churches & Community Organizations of Co-op City, Inc. has decided to organize a Candidates’ Forum to draw attention to the process and better educate the community about individuals running in the forthcoming primary election. We are therefore inviting all the accredited

candidates of the 12th District to participate in a virtual NYC Council Candidates’ Forum scheduled for Tuesday, June 13, at 7 p.m. The Zoom information and the rules of the process will be sent out as the date draws near. The Co-op City community, in conjunction with the District 12 constituents at-large, should look forward to hearing the views of individuals who are getting ready to serve the district. We will make the necessary information available in a timely fashion.
