NUST is a university that aspires to join the ranks of the leading universities of the world. Fostering congenial environment for academic excellence has been the main thrust at the University over the years. For this purpose, we utilize all available resources to keep pace with the changes occurring in the global educational arena.

Message from The Rector

With a view to addressing educational needs of students in a multidisciplinary framework, NUST has instituted a system encompassing infrastructural expansion along with the provision of requisite facilities to accommodate students pursuing studies in diverse fields. Though NUST has a longstanding history of imparting education in engineering disciplines with its ranking steadily mounting up, the development of new campus in Islamabad has facilitated the launch of Undergraduate as well as Postgraduate programmes in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, biosciences and business administration. With NUST’s evolutionary leap to turn into a comprehensive university, a major chunk of students aspires to pursue higher education here. It is evident from the fact that in the year 2011 more than 52,000 candidates applied for admissions in various undergraduate courses against the allotted seats of just 1,800. Being a premier science and technology institution in Pakistan, NUST has a strong focus on application-based research. It, therefore, actively collaborates with the local industry to launch joint ventures under the combined supervision of scholars, faculty and industrial experts. This in turn helps create right knowledge to meet market requirements and so contributes to curbing the specter of inflation. The University is also giving its significant share for the promotion of entrepreneurial culture in the country; establishment of a Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) is one such initiative. The Centre facilitates start-up companies in executing their business plans based on innovative ideas. The University strictly follows the merit-based criteria at all levels and encourages eligible scholars to apply and even provides them with financial assistance. NUST has a vision that does not lose sight of any possibility worth consideration for the benefit of students.

Pakistan Land of the Pure

As many regions vie in a race for ‘educational arms’ to grapple with international competitive challenges, high-order intellectual work, including basic science and research, South Asia also appears to be well-poised to compete in this knowledge marathon. Pakistan aspires to become the leading knowledge economy of the region. It is a country with the world’s 7th largest pool of scientists and engineers and the 9th largest English speaking nation.

Pakistan, the second largest country in South Asia and the 6th most populous nation of the world, emerged on the world map as an independent and sovereign state on August 14, 1947. A predominantly Muslim country, Pakistan is home to 170 million people, including Hindu, Christian, Sikh and other minorities. It has a 1,046 kilometre (650 mile) coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman in the south; and is bordered by Iran and Afghanistan in the west; India to the east and the People’s Republic of China in the far northeast. Tajikistan also lies very close to Pakistan but is separated by the narrow Wakhan Corridor. Pakistan thus is located at the crossroads between South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East.

The region forming modern Pakistan was at the heart of the ancient Indus Valley civilisation, enriched by Vedic, Persian, IndoGreek, Turco-Mongol and Islamic cultures. The region has witnessed invasions or settlements by the Indo-Aryans, Persians, Greeks, Arabs, Turks, Afghans, Mongols, Sikhs and the British. The country is divided into four provinces known as, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan. Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan. The noted among major cities are the metropolitans of Karachi, Hyderabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad and Gujranwala. Pakistan has a parliamentary system of government.

Pakistan embraces the clusters of some of Asia’s most picturesque landscapes and a rich kaleidoscope of cultures and traditions. Stretching in the north, from east to west, are a series of some of the highest mountains of the world, including the mighty Himalayas, the Karakoram, the Hindukush and 35 giant peaks over 24,000 ft high. Indeed, nowhere else in the world can one find such a great concentration of high mountains, peaks, glaciers and passes. The country also possesses vast fertile plains, awe-inspiring deserts, long winding rivers, beautiful lakes and fabulous flora and fauna.

Salt has been mined at Khewra since 320 BC following its discovery by Alexander’s troops. The main tunnel at ground level was developed by Dr Warth in 1872 but has since been converted into a tourist resort.

K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth with a peak elevation of 8,611 metres (28,251 ft). It is part of the Karakoram Range in northern Pakistan.

Islamabad is located on the Pothohar Plateau in the north of the country. Historically, the region has been a part of the crossroads of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; Margalla pass being a gateway to the KPK Province. The city was built during the 1960s to replace Karachi as Pakistan’s capital. Islamabad is noted as one of the greenest and most well-planned cities of South Asia. The city is divided into well-organised sectors and zones. In 2008, it was ranked as a Gamma world city. Among its landmarks, Faisal Mosque stands out as the largest mosque in South Asia and the sixth largest mosque in the world. Islamabad has the highest literacy rate in Pakistan, and is home to a few premier universities.

Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi has been inhabited for thousands of years. It is believed that a distinct culture flourished on this plateau as far back as 1000 BC. The remains found at the site prove the existence of a Buddhist establishment contemporary to Ghandhara and Vedic civilisations. The nearby town of Taxila is significant in its own right. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it has the world’s oldest university-Takshashila University.

Rawalpindi, also known as Pindi, has a history spread over several millenniums extending to ancient times. The city has witnessed the decline of Buddhism, the invasions of the Macedonians and the dawn of the Muslim era. Rawalpindi has many good hotels, restaurants, clubs, museums, playgrounds

and parks, including Ayub National Park. It is the nearest major city for holiday resorts and hill stations such as Murree, Nathiagali and Ayubia. It is also a common starting point for tourists visiting Abbottabad, Swat, Kaghan, Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu and Chitral. Only 15 kilometres apart from the federal metropolis, Rawalpindi is the founding

With a wave of higher education revolution already sweeping over a major part of the world, the need to ensure academic quality has been realized as well as given serious thought to. Pakistan has been no exception in the realization of this emerging paradigm. For this purpose, Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan established Quality Assurance Directorate. NUST is one of the first ten national universities, which established a Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) at the University’s main campus. In order to make this initiative bear fruit and keeping in view NUST being a multi-campus university, the management went an extra mile by establishing Local Quality Enhancement Cells (LQECs) at its various campuses across the country. Since NUST was already following a system of academic and R&D audits, it had no difficulty in quickly aligning its evaluation system as per HEC guidelines.

The objectives of NUST CSS are both vast and multidimensional in scope. However, the primary focus is on education, health, environment, sustainable development, disaster relief and conflict resolution.

NUST Trust Fund In line with the spirit of giving back to the community, the NUST Trust Fund has been established to support the core academic mission of the University i.e. to supply a steady source of income for academic purposes and to fund operations critical to the University’s educational and research objectives. As the university progresses, this fund becomes more central to its future development.

At NUST, it is ensured that the generosity of individual and institutional donors is dedicated to important educational purposes in a transparent manner. By virtue of its exceptional efficiency and emphasis on world-class quality, NUST is able to compete with larger, richer institutions for the best students and faculty.

Student Scholarships Our goal has always been to better educate and prepare students for their chosen careers. That is why, apart from providing career-related guidance and support through our Centre for Career Counselling and Advisory as well as the Career Development Centre, NUST has extensive scholarship programs for deserving students that help them gain experience and exposure for enhancing their skills and personalities.
