Batman Gone Bad This month not only marks the excitement of March Madness and baseball spring training, but also the release of the much-anticipated superhero movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, starring Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill reprising his role as Superman. While it is uncertain whether the pent-up excitement over the release of the new movie
was a motivation for a thief in Acadia Parish, Louisiana, what we do know is that the armed robber is likely a fan of the Caped Crusader. According to police, the robbery took place around 3:15am at the Frog City Travel Plaza Casino in Rayne, and surveillance footage reveals the suspect to be a tall, slim black man wearing a dark jacket and a blue Batman
beanie. So two questions reign supreme this month: will Batman or Superman rise to the top to command the respect of the world, or will they team up to overcome other evil doers? And what will happen to Batman, the thief in Louisiana? Well, watch the news to find
out in either case. Police are searching for the culprit, and Acadia Parish Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of their local Batman. Maybe Superman will swoop in to help out. So stay tuned! (Or, if you recall, “Don’t touch that dial!”)

Nambe Falls Casino Grand Opening a Big Success As the Santa Fe New Mexican reported on February 8 of this year, the new Nambe Falls Casino is accomplishing what they set out to do: provide a unique, warm ambiance for people who want to enjoy a smaller, more personal casino experience. Nambe Falls Casino opened on January 17, and continues to enjoy robust activity as a “boutique-style” casino that offers guests the newest slots and video-poker machines. Nambe Pueblo joins 13 other New Mexico tribes who operate casinos in the state. In addition to its intimate atmosphere, Nambe Falls is notable for another important aspect: “I didn’t want the Native décor because everybody does it,” general manager Pam Gallegos told the New Mexican, noting that they chose a more “homey” design scheme over one focusing on traditional Native arts and crafts. “That’s the kind of property I want to create—one of warmth and welcoming.”

It is vital that casino goers understand that the technology behind video poker makes the games as random as a computer program will allow. A 52-card virtual deck is constantly shuffling between plays 24/7, even when the machine isn’t being played. When a player hits the play button, the shuffling stops and five cards are dealt from the top of the virtual pile, popping up left to right on the screen. While you are deciding which cards you want to hold, the remaining 47 cards are still shuffling. After you decide and hit the button again, the cards stop shuffling and the x-number of cards you need to fill your hand come off the top and occupy the vacated positions. Five additional cards do not pop up left to right on every draw and create “shadow” cards behind the ones they hold, as some people think. If you hold the cards in positions one, two, and three, for example, only two cards come off the top of the 47-card pile and pop up left to right in the fourth and fifth positions on the screen. The only cards that are dealt on the draw are the number of cards needed to fill vacant positions. If you are dealt three cards to a royal flush in positions one, three, and four, for example, positions two and five will be the cards you throw away. If you mistakenly toss card one as well and come up with the nine of clubs in position one, you could see
the two cards that you needed to complete your royal flush pop up in positions two and five. Would you have hit the royal had you not made the mistake of throwing out one of the cards you needed? The answer is no. The card that would have been in position two would have been the nine of clubs. When video poker was first introduced, some manufacturers developed games in which ten cards came out, five up and five behind. With some, five cards were dealt off the top and the cards remaining just sat there stagnant until the draws came out. That is not the case any longer with advanced computer technology. Video poker games are available in a variety of pay tables. Casino operators select which percentage they want. But unlike the slots, video poker games are an open book to educated players. The great thing about video poker is that there is only one 52-card virtual deck with which you calculate the percentages based on the pay table. If you look at a Jacks or Better pay table set at 9/6 (nine coins for a full house and six for a flush) the game is going to have a return to expert players of 99.54 percent. The random nature of video poker does not change with denomination. Playing a quarter game as opposed to a dollar version will return the same percentage given the same pay table.

There’s a danger in trying something new and different. If you fall on your can, you risk getting laughed at, in some cases even fired. When the definitive history of the hair bands of the 1980s and 1990s is finally written, no doubt Bret Michaels will top the list as that era’s greatest front man. I begin with Pilarski’s rule #5: Never sit at a 6-to5 table. Rule #9: At a 3-to-2 table, never take even money/insurance. Let’s begin with even money: Players who are risk-averse, or, proverbially put, plus valet in manibus avis unica quam dupla silvis (which loosely translated from Latin means “A bird in the hand is worth more than two in the woods.”), tend to always take even money. They figure this maxim points out that by passing up even money for your blackjacks, you risk losing a sure thing. I also recommend NEVER playing 6-to-5 black-
casino, the even money option is typically prohibited on a 6-to-5 game. Although I haven’t personally seen it offered, if you come upon it, then I am neutral on taking an even money payoff. Although its expected value (EV) is even, the casino still has a sizable edge over your play. My best advice, Herb, is to let the casino pay their own light bills, and for you to take the 6-to-5 game out of your gaming repertoire altogether.
