Republican Presidential Contenders Testy Over Casino Gambling

If you tuned in to the Republican candidate debates on Wednesday, September 16, you probably caught the contentious exchange between Donald Trump and Jeb Bush about gambling in Florida. In a nutshell, Bush, who served as Florida’s governor from 1999 to 2007, contends that Trump tried to bring casino gambling to the Sunshine State, and that Bush shut the effort down. Trump contends he never did such a thing, saying during the debate, “If I wanted it, I would have gotten it.” So why should the American public care about who is right and who is wrong? Apparently, Trump helped finance Bush’s campaign—at the same time Trump was

seeking to bring casino gambling to Florida. Furthermore, it seems that the Seminole tribe, which was hoping for a partnership with Trump, contributed funds to the Bush campaign as well. But Bush continued his work to prevent casino gambling from coming to Florida. Republican Party spokesman Bob Sparks was even quoted in a 1998 Sun Sentinel report, “It’s not like our people say, ‘You give us $50,000, buddy boy, and this is what you’re gonna get.’ Both Jeb Bush and the party have expressed no interest at all in expanding gambling.” Bush maintains his anti-casino stance to this day.

AG: Stories of corrupt government officials are a dime a dozen—and, unfortunately, New Mexico is not immune. Our state’s Attorney General recently filed criminal complaints against Secretary of State Dianna Duran, who allegedly blew over $400,000 at local casinos over the past several years. So what’s the problem? It’s not a crime to gamble. But it is a crime to use other people’s money, and the AG Office believes that some of that money was campaign funds. That places Duran squarely in the middle of charges that range from fraud to embezzlement to money laundering—64 counts in all. Duran, age 59, took office in 2010, the first Republican in a majority Democrat state to do so in over 80 years. In light of these crimi-

One time a dozen of us, husbands and wives, six and six, were going to Greece. An awesome trip to be sure, but with one hook: Our vice president and marketing director was going too. Why? Why was mister-know-it-all-aboutmarketing going? This was the kind of guy who would “order” for you if you were going to Burger King. He knew the guy who sliced the onions and cooked the French fries. He could get us a seat near the take-out window. Maybe he was going because of his lineage: our marketing guru was part-Greek and partSwedish. His father taught him Greek as he grew. His mother taught him to be humble—but, unfortunately, he grew out of it. So on our first day, we were going to lunch as a group, at someplace where “the locals go,” and our leader was going to find—not to worry—a grafiko estiatorio (quaint restaurant). As we were herded through narrow streets, dodging bicycles and motor scooters, I could hear our commanding officer punching the warm air with his Yankee interpretation of Greek; it was getting funny, burlesque Athenian style. After almost 45 minutes of wandering about following the directions given to us by various native sons and daughters—and going nowhere—we decided to

As we watched the boss and his brood trudge around a corner, I sat on a stone bench and the rest of the group found shade and we all just sighed. As I was about to get up, an elderly man stopped right in front of me. It was the first person our VP had encountered while looking for a place to chow down. I got to tell you, he was movie-poster-perfect of what you’d imagine an elderly Greek gentleman to look like: wispy, curly, white hair, a delicate snow-white moustache. In perfect English he said to me, “You guys have your lunch yet?” I shook my head. “Too bad,” said the man. “We haven’t a clue,” I continued. “We wanted to get off the tourist trail and find a place where the home folks eat.” The man smiled. He asked for my pen and notepad, scribbled something on it, handed pen and pad back, told me to go back around the corner, and right where the alley meets the street, we’d find a restaurant—a good one. “Ask for Stavros,” he said. “And give Stavros this note.”

God, did I thank him. And thank him again. As my troop and I started to happily move toward what we were sure would be an outstanding lunch, I stopped and asked the man one final question: “We were just about here earlier. Why didn’t you give my boss directions to this restaurant?” The man shrugged. “Ah, he came off as superior. Wanting to show he could speak our language. No humility. All he had to say was he was hungry, and could I help. You understand? “Yeah,” I said, suppressing a smile. “I understand.” Now, the question is: Do you understand? One of the smartest things you can do in a casino is to act dumb. I don’t care if you’re a high ranking member of Mensa, just don’t show it. Ask questions. Find out about all the promotions. GEORGE LOPEZ Saturday, October 10 at 8pm In the pantheon of great Latino comic artists, George Lopez is most certainly a standout. His multi-faceted career includes his start in show business as a Los Angeles morning radio show host in 1999, and culminates with television’s groundbreaking sitcom, George Lopez, which ran for six seasons on ABC starting in 2002. After the show was cancelled in 2007, Lopez concentrated on stand up and comedy specials, putting out a series of films for HBO that earned Grammy nominations and other critical and commercial accolades. He was also the focus of the 2007 award-winning documentary Brown is the New Green: George Lopez and the American Dream. Lopez has also enjoyed a long career as a dramatic and comedic actor, earning praise for his performances in Real Women Have Curves, Bread and Roses, The Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl, and The Spy Next Door with Jackie Chan. But he is perhaps best known for the voice of Papi in the Beverly Hills Chihuahau movies, and the voice of Rafael the toucan in the animated hit Rio. Most recently, Lopez produced and starred in the Lionsgate drama, Spare Parts, which is based on a true story about four undocumented Mexican-American teenagers from Phoenix who team up to build an underwater robot that wins a national competition. Words of Wisdom from a Blackjack Some people play blackjack for fun. Some play the game for profit. Still others play for both. I know someone who is one of those latter players. On the condition of anonymity, he agreed to talk about the game and how he has managed to play successfully for so many years. While the average wager of “Mr. Aces,” as we’ll call him, is greater than that of budget-minded players, his consistency of play and high percentage of winning gaming sessions provide valuable insight for even the most casual player. More books have been written about blackjack than any other casino game simply because the rules make it “beatable” if players employ correct strategy. Still, blackjack’s vulnerability remains an illusion for a majority of people who play the game. Perhaps Mr. Aces can break down some of the barriers: John Brokopp: How long have you played casino blackjack? Mr. Aces: I’ve been a blackjack player since the late 1960s. Before casino gambling was legalized in the Mid-

west, I took trips to Las Vegas four or five times a year. Now it can be as often as once a week that I go. JB: Have you ever read any books about the game, and, if so, have any of them been helpful? MA: I’ve read a multitude of books over the years. The information proved helpful only when I found a consistency or common thread. When I did, I’d highlight it and make a note in a journal. Such information seemed to prove out over the long run to be the most valuable. On the other hand, if I came across something I hadn’t read before, I’d make note of that, too. If I didn’t come across it again, a “red flag” went up in my mind. Such

information did not work out to be significant and I tended to disregard it. JB: What else did you do to hone your game? MA: I practiced playing the game a lot. Before computers, I’d just practice playing hands out of four-deck shoes, which happened to be the predominant game in Las Vegas at the time. The practice proved very helpful, especially during the days when my play was restricted to my visits to Las Vegas. When you haven’t played in a while, your game can be a little hesitant when you return to it. Practice can eliminate this and also build up your confidence and consistency. JB: What do you consider to be the ideal playing conditions? MA: Single-deck blackjack is obviously the best game. As for the more popular six- and eight-deck games, I really haven’t noticed a significant difference between them. I know that there’s a player edge in the six-deck games, but I can tell you that on occasion I’ve played at a table when eight decks were in play and not realized it, yet I’ve had some profitable sessions there. The number of people at the table can make a big difference. Playing one-on-one with the dealer is the ideal condition, to be sure, but finding that

situation is very rare. Short of oneon-one, playing at a table with two to four other players is the best. I max out the games I play at five players. A table with six or seven players makes for bad playing conditions as far as I’m concerned. I wouldn’t be sitting down at such a table for very long. JB: What system of money management do you use? MA: I always try to set a loss limit for my playing sessions, along with a win ceiling, which is usually three to four times that of my loss limit. Also, when I set a win ceiling for myself, I approach the goal in smaller increments rather than going for big scores. I may set a short-term playing goal for myself of $60 or $80, then start all over and try to do it again. If you’re successful at this often enough, say 10 times, you’re talking about $600 to $800 in winnings. When you go for it all at once, your bankroll can be wiped out during a cold run of the cards. Also, if you use a progressive system of wagering and the play starts getting choppy, you can get into big trouble real quick. There are rare occasions when I’ll deviate from this system, but I have found it’s really the best way to go. You just have to stick with it.

Progressively Riding Your Streak

Dear Mark: My brother-in-law swears that after every second win, you double your bet. He says you are keeping the first win after raising the bet and then using house money for the raise. So, his method is $5, $5, $10, $10, $20, $20. If you win six hands in a row, you win $70. Losing six hands in a row costs you $30. What are your thoughts on this system? — Bill L. Your brother-in-law’s wagering system is a progressive method of betting where the bet size is systematically changed, up or down, across a series of hands according to his own predetermined formula (in this case, $5, $5, $10, $10, $20, $20). There are an almost endless number of variations of both positive and negative betting progressions distinguished from one another by when the progression is invoked, how much the wagers are raised or lowered, and when the progression is terminated. The progressive system I have sug-

gested in the past is similar to your brother-in-law’s in that, like him, I set a predetermined percentage increase to follow any winning bet, and I retreat to the table minimum after a loss. My progressive system goes like this: I increase the wager that follows any winning bet—except the first—by 50 percent. So, the first $5 bet wins, the next bet (also for $5) wins, and now we’re off on the 50 percent gallop of $8, $12, $18, $28, etc. Then we drop to the table minimum—or “flat betting”—after every loss. Like your brother-in-law, I take a conservative approach and lock up that first $5 win, and wait for a second win before bumping up my bets to engage my variation of a progressive system. Doing some simple Sister Cyrilla fifth grade arithmetic, here are the totals after six hands: For starters, the typical gambler that flat bets $5 per hand would net

$30 after six wins. Your brother-in-law nets $70, and my progressive system returns $76. Every winning hand thereafter, taking into consideration that he bumps up his bets incrementally as he has every two hand by $10, the progressive formula that I use will outperform his. Every winning streak will have to end at some point. So whether using your brother-in-law’s way or mine, the potential gain when using a positive progressive system when on a eureka moment clearly outperforms flat betting. Just so long as you don’t employ the Martingale System of betting. The Martingale System is a “negative” progression betting system whereby you do exactly the opposite by increasing your wager size after each subsequent loss. In essence, you, the gambler, double your previous bet (after a loss), leaning on the statistical certainty that sooner or later you are bound to win. Far too many players believe the Martingale System is foolproof because you have to win eventually. The problem with this money management technique is: 1) you do not have an inexhaustible bankroll to take on multiple losses, and 2) the casino owns the bank and sets the rules—like table limits.

Allow me, Bill, to show you how lethal this form of wagering can be. You bet $10 and lose, then $20 to recoup that loss; followed by $40, $80, $160, and, finally, $320. Six wagers and you have just invested $630 to get your measly $10 back. Your next bet needs to be $640, but your $10 games may have a table limit of $500. A string of six defeats and you are up against the table limit, possibly tapped out and still chasing ten buckaroos. Have you ever met a gambler who hasn’t lost six, eight, or even ten hands in a row? I sure haven’t. Ask any dealer and he or she will tell you that it happens far more often that you can ever imagine.
