John Legend is mostly known as a popular singer/songwriter, but this multi-talented entertainer, called a “genius” by no less than Quincy Jones himself, is also a reknowned producer, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. Winner of nine GRAMMY® awards, Legend’s music is distinguished by its melding of modern rhythm and blues with disco influences, overlain with subtle vocal harmonies and acoustic and electric instrumentation. Born in Springfield, Ohio, in 1978, Legend first worked as a back-up musician and singer for Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys before rocketing to stardom with his 2004 album Get Lifted. Navajo Gaming Compact Rejected by NM State Legislature As we reported in last month’s issue of Casino Entertainer, a proposed agreement between the State of New Mexico and the Navajo Nation was slated for debate during the recent session of the New Mexico State Legislature. If passed, the agreement would have gone into effect later this year to allow the Navajo Nation the right to operate up to three new casinos (not five, as originally reported) in New Mexico over the next 15 years. In spite of Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly and other proponents making their case in favor of the compact—and the House voting its approval on Tuesday, February 18—the Senate voted 31-to-10 the following day against the agreement. President Shelly expressed his bitter disappointment and is now considering the Nation’s options.

THE HISTORY OF GAMBLING PART 1 There are people out there, under 55 years old and influenced by the remake of Ocean’s Eleven, who probably believe George Clooney and Brad Pitt invented gambling. Which isn’t a surprise, since older folks, with their own fond memories of movies like Casablanca, probably credit Humphrey Bogart with the deed. Then there are the silverbacks, the really longin-the-tooth players, gamblers, if you will, who subscribe to neither of these two assumptions. These include the high rollers—whales as they are commonly known—who bring money to the casino by weight, not by dollar. These folks know the real score: that the same people who invented language invented gambling. Mr. Cro-Magnon and his cave-dwelling squeeze initially had no need to speak. They could look at a flower all day and all they had to do was smile. But eventually, they realized, all that silence did nothing to put frijoles on the table—or, if we’re sticking with the theme, a woolly rump roast on the fire pit. Now, when a six-ton woolly mammoth is charging a 160-pound Cro-Magnon, it’s extremely difficult to remain silent. This is how screaming was invented. But, seriously, man cannot live by nut, bean, and root alone. For his brain to grow he must have meat. And after tasting some burnt mammoth leg—perhaps the result of lightning
striking a tree that fell on the gigantic beast— early man had indeed discovered the joy of outdoor barbecues. So now the question became, how could one fellow, carrying only a single pointy-ended stick, bring down an entire woolly mammoth? Well, we’re a clever species. A light went off in one of our ancestor’s brains and, voila, teamwork was invented. This gent knew that there was no way one man with a spear could knock down the mammoth, but how about a dozen, fifteen, twenty spear-chuckers working together? How to organize the team, though? Sign language was likely the start. Waving, signaling, pointing. Then came rudimentary grunts, grunts grew into a series of grunts, which grew into refined sounds and, well, eventually everyone was yakking up a storm. But let’s back up to the hunt. With a couple dozen spears sticking out of his side and looking more like a pincushion than a beast, these woollys gave up the ghost and cashed in. Now, it was time for the entire cave community to come together, to cut up the mammoth and divvy it up among clan members. Every cave dwelling family received an equal share of the meat, except for the prize of every hunt: the liver. Who would get that? That decision fell to the elder of the clan, who gathered all the men together in a circle, sitting cross-legged. In the center stood the elder who held a shortened spear with a pointed end. At a given signal, the elder tossed the spear into the air with a twisting motion. When the spear touched the ground, the hunter at which it pointed won the liver. Thus began the fine art of diplomacy. And of gambling. It wasn’t much, but it was a beginning.

I’m not the first researcher and mathematician to announce that blackjack is beatable primarily because it’s predictable. But I have made discoveries and created methods that make the game not only more predictable but also more winnable. Doing seminars nationwide when time permits, I came up with a beginner’s learning tool that I’ve found beautifully introduces newcomers to cutting-edge blackjack methods and the concept of predictability (at least one aspect of it) and probability (which some people think of as “playing the odds,” although it’s more than that). I call this tool The Circle of 13 and the exercises that arise from it, Circle of 13 Games. When a mathematician looks to simplify a problem, he looks for the lowest common denominator, that is, the simplest representation that, in a nutshell, explains the greater whole. In blackjack, our lowest common denominator is a suit of cards, which total 13 in all. No matter how many decks are in play, suits are the building blocks that set all the blackjack math in motion, so if you understand what’s going on in a suit of cards and can play a Circle of 13 Game, you are en route to playing a more precise, better game. In every suit there are four 10-point cards: the ac-
tual 10s and the three face cards. This proportion—4 out of 13—is the same for every game, whether single or multiple deck. The 10s, therefore, account for a little less than 31 percent of the cards, while the rest count for a little less than 8 percent each. Right away you should understand why the Old School method of “always assume the hole card [the dealer’s hidden card] is a 10” is so ridiculous. On average, that likelihood is just 31 percent, which means playing the Old School way will have you making a mistake 69 percent of the time! Now, a Circle of 13 Game is where you play with just one suit of cards, dealt to just three players. Deal as they would in a casino, one card to each player (starting with the “first baseman,” the player next to the dealer’s left arm) with the second card to the dealer being the hole card. The great thing about this is that you can predict events with an exactitude you cannot bring to the real game, and it gets your brain working. It teaches you the concept of probability. This is akin to a beginning pianist starting with scales instead of Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto. Let’s recreate the example shown here with a suit of cards. Old Schoolers will tell you the dealer’s 6 is weak and you should expect it to bust. But is that really true? Look at the cards and answer the following questions: 1) What cards remain un-dealt? 2) Based upon your answer to question No. 1, what’s the exact likelihood the dealer’s hole card is a 10? 3) Based upon your answer to question No. 2, is the dealer strong or weak? 4) What is the relative (not exact) likelihood the dealer will bust? (Take the un-dealt cards and pair them with the dealer’s 6 and see how many combinations would bust the dealer.) 5) What’s the relative (not exact) likelihood the player with the 8 and 9, a 17-point hand, will win? One thing this will teach you is the need to analyze the cards before assuming anything. Work on this and I’ll give you the full explanation, with all the answers, next month!

There is always the potential for romance when dining and dancing is involved, and when you throw in the possibility of sharing a slot jackpot with your significant other, Cupid’s arrow can strike right across the pay line! Regardless of whether you are a casino regular or a complete novice, there are some guidelines to follow when you play the slots. Adhering to the following bits of advice can keep your special casino date on target for a memorable outing. • Never allow free slot play and gift offers to dictate how frequently you make a casino outing. If they happen to coincide with the date you’re planning to go, that’s great. Casino marketing divisions strategize over promotional days with the sole intent of driving business. Don’t be manipulated if it’s not in your plans. • When you play the slots, slow down! The faster you play, the more money you bet over a given period of time. The more money you bet, the more it is subjected to the hold—the hold being the amount of money the slot machine retains versus what it gives out. So rapid-fire hitting of the “play” button only works against you. • When you sit down at a game with a progressive jackpot that requires you to bet max coins on each spin to be eligible to win it, be prepared to bet the max. It makes no sense to play less on such games and disqualify yourself from a chance to hit the big one. Move on to another game if you’re not willing to commit. • Spending too much time on one machine is the biggest mistake slot players can make. Having the ill-conceived notion that the machine is “hot” or is on the verge of getting hot will make you invest far more money than you intended, or worse, bet back a profit you may have made on the game. • The amount of bankroll you bring
with on a casino outing will dictate the denomination you play, keeping in mind that you are playing better percentages if you invest $2.00 per spin on a dollar game as opposed to $2.00 per spin on a penny game. • As much fun as bonus rounds on penny games are fun to catch, it’s important that slot players never “chase” them. At times you’ll catch a bonus round several times during a half hour of play, many times none at all. Hoping that just one more spin will get you into the bonus keeps the casinos in the money. • If you are fortunate enough to win a tidy sum on a game, by all means go home with a good portion of it. It isn’t easy to win. Becoming greedy or thinking it’s your lucky day usually results in players giving it all back. • The misconception that a machine is “hot” or “cold” is founded on a lack of knowledge a majority of players possess about slots. Avoiding what may be perceived as a cold machine, or spending too much time on what may be perceived as a hot machine, has no impact on what result you will get. • When you walk away from a machine after losing and watch the next person who sits down hit the jackpot, it’s important to remember you didn’t miss out. The computer programs of each unit are processing combinations of symbols even when nobody is playing. The chances of hitting a jackpot are always the same. Even though it seems as if the reels on any given slot machine spin independently of one another, the combinations you get on a spinning reel slot or video slot are predetermined the instant you initiate a play. Never think you are “just missing” on a big hit. Always use your player’s club card to maximize your return on investment from every dollar you wager, but never allow casino marketing strategies to dictate how often you visit or how much you bet. Stick with whatever level of play is comfortable for you.

Using Final Jeopardy Tactics at Blackjack Dear Mark: A few weeks ago I got into the final round of a blackjack tournament. When we got to the final hand, the three remaining players with chips, me being one of them, had nearly an equal amount of chips remaining. It felt like we were on the game show Jeopardy, and it was the final question. Both player A and B bet all their chips, so I decided to go along and bet all of my chips. The dealer ended up with a blackjack, and we all lost. The rules stated that in the event of a tie, the remaining players are each given $200 worth of chips, and four additional hands were dealt to determine the place winner. Naturally, my luck (cards) went downhill from there, and I ended up
March 2014 in third place. Getting back to that final round before the “playoff,” what should have been my correct move? I blame myself for losing. Nate S. Instead of blaming yourself, Nate, how about passing it on to something Jean de la Fontaine once said: “Luck is always to blame.” One important thing you want to remember when playing in a blackjack tournament is that all players are competing against the same dealer. The significance of this is that players tend to have similar outcomes on any given hand. In your example, if the dealer draws a blackjack, the entire table ends up with the same result: a loss. One way to gain ground is by playing each hand correctly and having better cards than your opponents have. However, it is a lot easier to gain ground by betting and playing your hand differently than the others at the table. I was once in that same Final Jeopardy position as you, Nate, and here is the move that I made. Unlike you, I pushed in all my chips on the last hand but for one $5 chip. The others on the table chucked in all their chips on the last hand, only to be wiped out by the dealer having a blackjack. My remaining red chip was enough to win the tournament.
Casino Revenues Up in the U.S. While Macau Investors Strike Gold We all know the old adage, “If at first you don’t succeed.” Well, how about, “Where at first you don’t succeed?” Wynn Resorts Ltd (formed in 2002 by former Mirage Resorts chairman and CEO Steve Wynn) and Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands Company both saw revenues down in recent years at their Vegas mainstays, the Wynn and Las Vegas Sands Casino and Resort. But perhaps as a hedge against the unpredictable U.S. economy, the two men were savvy enough to invest in the growing casino industry in the autonomous Chinese city of Macau. And their daring paid off. Wynn Resorts Ltd reportedly doubled its profits in the
final quarter of last year, reflecting a net income of $214 million, due in large part to its Macau investments. While Sheldon Adelson has not made public his numbers, he has stated that his firm was essentially saved by his investments in what is now becoming the world’s biggest casino destination. Nevada casinos overall, however, marked a fourth consecutive year of gaming revenue gains, thanks to high-roller attractions like Baccarat as well as plain oldfashioned “lady luck,” which always favors the house. Thanks to both factors, Nevada posted revenues of $11.1 billion for 2013, the first time since 2008 that number has exceeded the $11 billion mark.
