CHARLEY PRIDE Saturday, April 26 at 8pm

Country music legend Charley Pride brings his golden baritone voice and famously touching music to Isleta Resort & Casino on April 26—in what is sure to be a sold-out show. Pride’s greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s as one of RCA’s high-selling performers since Elvis Presley. In total, Mr. Pride has garnered 39 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, many of which are now considered modern classics. “Kiss An Angel Good Morning” went on to be a million-selling crossover single, and other standards include “Is Anybody Goin’ To San Antone?” “I’m So Afraid of Losing You Again,” “Mississippi Cotton Picking Delta Town,” “Someone Loves You Honey,” and “When I Stop Leaving I’ll be gone.” Pride is one of the few African American country

musicians to have had considerable success in the country music industry and only the second African American to have been inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Born to poor sharecroppers as one of 11 children in Sledge, Mississippi, Pride is a timeless everyman, revered by his musical peers and adored by countless millions of fans around the globe. He unofficially started his music career in the late 1950s as a ballplayer with the Negro American League’s Memphis Red Sox, singing and playing guitar on the team bus between ballparks. After a tryout with the New York Mets, Pride decided to return to his Montana home via Nashville. Pride’s first single hit the airwaves in January 1966 and within a short period of time “The Snakes Crawl at Night” was climbing the charts with his “Before I Met You” closing in on its tail. In June 1994, Pride was honored by the Academy of Country Music with its prestigious Pioneer Award. In July 1999, he received his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and on October 4, 2000, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, weeping when Hall of Famer Brenda Lee announced his name. Through it all, we are reminded that “The Pride of Country Music” remains one of the great legends in popular music—and that he is still going strong. Come see the incomparable Charley Pride at Isleta Resort & Casino on April 26. For more information, visit www.isleta.com

Two New Mexico Tribes Request Gambling Compacts As reported in the March 16, 2014 issue of the Albuquerque Journal, two New Mexico tribes, Zuni Pueblo and Jemez Pueblo, have contacted Governor Susana Martinez requesting her approval of gambling compacts that would allow them to open and operate casino enterprises. This just after the New Mexico State Legislature rejected a request by the Navajo Nation to expand their gaming operations in the state. This is the first ever request made by Zuni Pueblo, which is located in the western part of the state just south of Gallup. Jemez Pueblo, located north of Albuquerque, previously made an unsuccessful bid for a casino project in the southern part of the state. According to state law, New Mexico’s governor must negotiate gambling compacts with the tribes that request it. However, while there is no limit on the number of casinos that may be authorized, whatever is negotiated between the governor and a tribe must still be approved by the New Mexico State Legislature. Which means that any agreements established between these tribes and Gov. Martinez will not be voted on until the next legislative session in February 2015. Stay tuned to Casino Entertainer for further developments.

New Gambling Rule: You Lose You . . . Sue? You would think a 52-year-old man would be old enough to know when to quit. But, no. Mark Johnston, a retiree from California, believes that the $500,000 he lost while gambling during a blackout drunk back in February is the fault of the Downtown Grand in Las Vegas. And he wants the casino to give the money back to him. Why? Johnston claims that because Nevada law bars casinos from allowing visibly drunk patrons to gamble and from serving them comped drinks, he should never have been allowed to remain at the tables. Furthermore, in addition to bringing him free drinks in spite of his obvious intoxication, the casino kept issuing him the markers, or credit,

that allowed his play to continue. The Downtown Grand, which opened in late 2013, is countersuing, claiming that Johnston knew what he was doing and that he is simply trying to shirk his gambling debts. No doubt the tapes from the surveillance cameras will come into play in the judge’s decision. If Johnston’s claim is upheld, it could open the floodgates for thousands of similar lawsuits. If not, it will once again represent a victory for emphatic supporters of personal responsibility, on and off the tables. Not a good combination?

It’s a rags to riches story if ever there was one: a poor child grows up in a bad neighborhood, skips college, perseveres through a handful of minimum wage jobs, joins the army, and then starts a string of businesses that would earn him millions of dollars by the time he was in his mid-thirties. Over the course of his life so far, Sheldon Adelson has started over 50 businesses, but none as lucrative as Las Vegas Sands, a development company that oversees operations at destination casino resorts in Las Vegas, Macau, and Singapore. Earning an average of $32 million a day over the last year—the third most of anyone in the world—Adelson’s fortune grew to over $11.2 billion dollars last year. That astonishing figure earned him eighth place on Forbes magazine’s most recent annual ranking of billionaires, behind Mexican media mogul Carlos Slim Helu, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and Amancio Ortega, the man behind the phenomenally successful Spanish clothing chain Zara. Few Vegas gambling moguls can touch Adelson’s success. In fact, the closest second, Steve Wynn, only boasts a personal fortune of around $2.5 billion, according to the most recent numbers available. Las Vegas’s Phillip Ruffin comes in third at around $2 billion. Steve Wynn’s ex-wife, Elaine, and Station Casino owner and Ultimate Fighting Championship investor Frank Fertitta, round out the top five wealthiest Las Vegas casino magnates at about $1.5 billion and $1.1 billion respectively.

Blackjack the Smart Way Learn Blackjack from the Pro!

Richard Harvey, Blackjack Strategist Two Best Sellers: Blackjack The Smart Way and Cutting Edge Blackjack Order his books and products at www.Blackjacktoday.com Email your questions to: RichardHarvey@Blackjackthesmartway.com Last month I had you play a version of Circle of 13, the card situation shown here that is based on a game of my invention that I introduce and explain in Cutting Edge Blackjack. The game is played with a suit of cards and is a learning tool to help you understand the concept of probability. I posed a series of questions for you to think about, and, as promised, here are the answers. Examining what we see below, Old Schoolers would likely tell you the dealer’s 6 is weak and you should expect it to bust. But is that true? I say no, because: 1) Given your answer to question No. 1, what is the exact likelihood the dealer’s hole card is a 10? Zero. All the 10s were dealt already. There are none left. (While I realize this would never occur in a real game, there are dramatic swings in card balances in which equivalent situations occur—where so many 10s were dealt, they’re much less likely to appear.) 2) Is the dealer strong or weak? The dealer is very strong here. The cards that combine singly with the 6 to produce the most bustable totals have been dealt (the 8, 9, and 10s, which would have given the

dealer bustable totals of 14, 15, and 16; these cards are also the ones we’d like to be rich in the un-dealt mix, to then bust the dealer). Therefore, the dealer is highly unlikely to bust. (Hint: You could not stand on a 12through 16-point hand if you had one here.) My research has revealed that all dealer up cards have strong and weak phases, based on the specific mix of un-dealt cards throughout a round. Here, this concept is demonstrated dramatically. 3) What is the relative likelihood the dealer will bust? Very few card combinations would now bust the dealer, so the likelihood is very low. (See the four permutations that would do so—less likely fiveand six-card strings, dependent on the 7 coming last, to bust the dealer.) 4) What’s the relative likelihood the player with the 8 and 9, a 17-point hand, will win? Very low. The dealer will tend to draw to at least 17 if not better. When low cards are due, the dealer 6 scores high. One of the lessons here: You must learn to analyze the cards to determine whether the dealer is strong or weak—no matter what the up card is—so you know how to play your cards.

Putting Casino Entertainment into Perspective By John G. Brokopp

POKER TOURNAMENT CHAMPION DEALS SOME ADVICE

By John G. Brokopp

If you’re a poker enthusiast, you probably cut your teeth on the game playing with family and friends at the kitchen table. The next step was trying your hand in a casino poker room where, for the first time, you experienced what it was like playing the game with people you had never met before. Taking your game to the next level can be a challenge. There are the high profile, big-money tournament circuits such as the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and the World Poker Tour (WPT), where many of the established stars of poker play their trade. There are also regional tours, such as the Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) and the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT), which feature more affordable buy-ins and give average, everyday players the opportunity to experience tournament action. Seeking out a regional tournament is in all likelihood your best bet, especially if you feel that a little experience at the Class AAA level is a prerequisite to playing in the major leagues. Most New Mexico casinos have regular tournaments that they feature in the pages of Casino Entertainer. One regional tournament winner, Kenneth Baime of Glenview, Illinois, took home first place and a $77,681 paycheck when he won the Mid-States Poker Tour event at Majestic Star Casino in Gary, Indiana, in early March. He left in his wake 300 opponents. What words of wisdom does Baime have to offer fellow poker players who wish to take their game to the next level? “When I won the MSPT, until just before the final table I probably had a below average stack for about 90 percent of the tournament, and started day two in roughly 55th place out of 86 or so people remaining,” he says. “But, I waited, picked my spots, and just tried to stay in the hunt. I was fortunate enough to remain competitive until I finally could accumulate more chips. A few years ago, I probably would have forced the issue early, and likely would have been knocked out because I would have been playing subpar hands.” Therein rests the foundation of Baime’s philosophy. Comparing chip stacks too early in the tournament often leads to rash decisions on the part of the less-experienced player. Baime also reminds players to be very conscious of how their playing style is perceived by the other players at the table. In other words, know your image. “If you have raised the last five hands, even though you may know you had premium hands every time, if the hands have not gone to showdown and you haven’t had to show your cards, other players are probably perceiving you as being quite loose and/or aggressive,” he says. “By the same token, if you have folded for the last hour because you kept getting lousy hands, you are probably being perceived as overly tight. If you are being perceived as tight, you may get away with a bluff that a loose player might have been called down on. If you are being perceived as loose, and hit a big hand, maybe you can bet a larger amount and still get paid, or maybe you need to fold a pretty good hand you otherwise might have played. Can Eastern Medicine Help Your Cancer? By Gale O’Brien Western medicine encompasses all types of conventional medical treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and physical therapy performed by doctors, nurses, and other conventional healthcare providers. It differs from Eastern or alternative medicine in that it relies heavily upon industrially produced medication and a strict adherence to the formal scientific process. Complementary vs. Alternative Medicine On the other hand, “complementary” and “alternative” are terms used to describe a number of products, practices, and systems that are not part of mainstream Western medicine. They can include things like herbs and dietary supplements, body movement, spiritual approaches, pills, extracts, and creams or ointments. The American Cancer Society considers complementary and alternative medicine to be different from each other: • Alternative medicine is used instead of standard or mainstream medical treatment, often with serious outcomes for the patient. • Complementary medicine is used along with mainstream medical care. If carefully chosen and properly used, some of these can improve your quality of life without causing problems with your regular cancer treatment. Treatments within Eastern Medicine Alternative and complementary methods can relieve the side effects of mainstream cancer treatments without the need to take more pills. It’s important to check with your traditional doctor first before deciding to use any treatments within Eastern Medicine. Below is a list of treatments, along with a brief description and the benefits received. Imagery is the use of visualization techniques designed to enable the mind to influence the health and well being of the body. Imagery can be useful during diagnostic testing such as MRIs and CT scans. Imagery can also be useful during radiation therapy by imagining the radiation beam to be a healing light. Massage involves the manipulation, rubbing, and kneading of the body’s muscles and soft tissues with the use of oils, aromatherapy and soothing music. Massage therapy can decrease the anxiety, depression, and bone pain associated with chemotherapy. Polarity therapy is a system of touch and movement using the positive and negative charges of the body’s electromagnetic energy field. Polarity can be effective in restoring the balance of the natural flow of energy throughout the body.

Reiki is a form of treatment used to manipulate energy fields within and around the body to liberate the body’s natural healing powers. It can be given in either a hands-on or hands-off format. Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “universal life energy.” Acupuncture is a technique in which very thin needles of varying lengths are inserted through the skin to treat a variety of conditions. Acupuncture is effective in treating nausea caused by chemotherapy drugs. It is also helpful in relieving bone and muscle pain during both chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Yoga is a form of nonaerobic exercise that involves a program of precise poses and breathing activities to create a union of mind, body, and spirit. Yoga is effective in building core strength, restoring balance, relaxation and physical fitness during cancer treatments. Gale O’Brien is a cancer survivor, author and motivational speaker. She used both Western and Eastern medicine to survive breast cancer and skin cancer. Ask Mark Answering your By Mark Pilarksi

gaming questions.

Dear Mark: I ran into a slot machine where there is an option to stop one or more wheels, or to stop all of them. Does that change the outcome of the spin, or are the results the same had I not used the touch screen? I am figuring it is divine intervention on where the reels will stop,

April 2014 and not skill. —Alan R. Surprisingly, Alan, I have not crossed paths with this type of machine. I am aware of them, but to tangle with, or write about, I have not to date. So, Alan, winging my answer here, I am fairly sure that by manually stopping the video reels at what you believe is some syncretistic moment, is not going to have any impact on the outcome. If it did, this would make it a game of skill, which is not legal in any gaming jurisdiction that I am familiar with when it comes to slot machines. Video poker, on the other hand, is completely skill based.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19) It’s your birthday! Work to make the most of your fire power as the Lunar Eclipse on the 15th aligns in your sign. You will initiate many new projects during this cycle and make major breakthroughs. Fortunate events unexpectedly occur.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22) Lunar vibrations indicate there may be a mix-up in plans or difficulties getting others to understand your views and what you’re trying to accomplish. Try to steer clear of arguments and avoid feelings of discouragement. Forge ahead with plans.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21) You could find yourself negotiating the best way to market yourself, a product or an idea by June. Stay tactful even though you will disagree with someone’s strategy on a project. Insight into your sub-conscious motivations brings personal growth under the full moon.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20) The sun enters your sun sign on the 19th and your personal year begins. Cosmic patterns give you time to look within and face and eliminate old fears. The solar eclipse on the 29th sheds light on career, finances, and relationships.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22) Stay on top of financial matters and long-term investments. Don’t be discouraged if you have difficulty negotiating a sale or loan. Planetary influences cause delays until the end of the month. Job situations and opportunities ignite during the new moon.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19) You’ll be pre-occupied most of this month with bookkeeping, records and getting organized. Expect to find solutions to many nagging problems during the rays of the two eclipses. Family concerns take precedence over your social agenda.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 21) You will undergo a life altering experience over the next few months. Many of your blind spots concerning how you perceive others and the world around you will be clarified. Many past situations will be confronted.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 23) The accent is on cooperation and negotiation. The total full moon eclipse lands in your sign on the 15th indicating there still are some sensitive issues to be worked out with personal and professional associations. Its time to make new contacts.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18) You’re in the mood to get your home and life in order. Avoid high risk investments and pare down on careless spending. Put money aside for much needed improvements or repairs. You encounter more domestic responsibilities this month. Expect a bonus.

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 22) The Aries rays stimulate your ambition and make you confident and aggressive in seeking a position that satisfies your intellectual needs. You are in a four-month cycle of obstacles due to Mars. Avoid conflicts and commitments.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 21) A turning point is reached regarding a business, tax or legal matter. Do everything possible not to be drawn into a dispute on the work front. Purchase new equipment or set up a make shift office at home. A family situation requires special handling.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20) The magic of Venus helps you find talents that could be put to good use. This fortunate planet helps you attract money, windfalls, and love interests, so keep on the lookout! Travel is also in the mix so go ahead and plan your getaway.

JOKE OF THE MONTH Poker Game There once was a woman who played poker once a month with a group of female coworkers she was concerned that she always woke her husband when she came home around 1:00 am. One night she decided to try not to wake him. She undressed in the living room and, put her purse over her shoulder, and tiptoed nude into the bedroom, but was surprised to find her husband sitting up in bed reading. “Dammit woman!” he exclaimed. “Did you lose everything?”
