Friday, July 28 at 8pm The legend of the rock and roll powerhouse known as Lynyrd Skynyrd began in 1964, in Jacksonville, Florida, when five teenage buddies turned their love of blues and rock and roll into a distinctive sound that would forever be known as Southern Rock. Their superstardom trajectory was abruptly halted in 1977, when a plane crash killed three of the band’s members, including lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant. The band took a 10-year hiatus before reforming in 1987 with a five-person line-up, including original member Gary Rossington and Van Zant’s brother Johnny Van Zant on lead vocals. The band has been touring regularly since then. As Rossington says, “We’re still stand-
ing, still keeping the music going. We wanted to do the guys who aren’t with us any more proud, and keep the name proud, too.” Lynyrd Skynyrd has released 14 studio albums, enjoyed sales beyond 30 million worldwide, and their beloved classic American rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” has had over two million downloaded ringtones. On October 8, 1871, Mrs. O’Leary’s cow knocked over a lantern in the O’Leary barn. Flames from the overturned lantern started the Great Chicago Fire, killing 300 people and destroying most of the city. At the inquest-trial, Mrs. O’Leary claimed at first she was in bed at the time. When asked what a lantern was doing lit-up, in the barn, alone at ten in the evening? She stammered her answer, “I was cleaning the barn.” The cow ended up taking the hit. Got 10 to 20 with no dessert of alfalfa and molasses for 28 months. End of story? No…. It’s 1942, Louis Cohn, a successful Chicago businessman and entrepreneur, is being laid to rest. Ninety years old. In his will he leaves $35,000 to Northwestern University. Back then 35 grand is like a quartermill today.
Then Cohn’s lawyer reads aloud at the gift ceremony that he, Louis Cohn, was responsible for The Great Chicago Fire . . . quoting Louis now: “I was 18, and a hustler. always looking to make a score. Nothing crooked you understand. One time this cheese maker had a load of cheese could not unload it. I sold all of it, even before I made the deal with him. Anyway, it was no secret Mrs. O’Leary was on the hustle. She opened the barn at night so guys could come in get some salami, cheese, coffee - whataever. She’d take a little and the game was on. So, on this night when I get the dice, I roll a seven right off. My second toss I get an eight and I make the eight. Then I get a six and make that. Then I roll a ten…………now I think, I’m dead. That’s a rough number. And I start rolling, and rolling. I must of rolled twenty time; then on that last toss, It comes up a pair of fives—I made my ten. I got so excited , as I reached for my pot of dough, I knocked over the lattern... onto a pile of straw. Bingo. The fire started. That’s how it happened. I, Louis Cohn, was responsible for the Chicago Fire.” And to this date no one else, it seems, was in the barn.

When the topic of slot machines comes up during casino goers’ conversations, the banter invariably gravitates around the adjectives “hot,” cold,” “tight,” and “loose.” In other words, slot enthusiasts typically judge the games they play (and justifiably so) by the bottom line results: did you win or did you lose? Making a snap judgment on a machine’s volatility, or labeling one machine more advantageous to play than another, is counterproductive when dealing with the “soulless” computer-driven pieces of technology that slot machines really are. Likewise, attaching a “personality” to a particular game or unit whose very existence is based upon the cold, calculating principle of mathematical probability plays no factor in winning or losing. Mathematical probability is a constant. Every slot game’s software is programmed to achieve the desired result, but only after a significant number of decisions have been reached. Making assumptions about a game based solely upon the tiny windows of opportunity during which you play a particular machine has no merit. Compare it to flipping a coin. It’s possible to get 10 “heads” in row, or get “tails” in 20 of 25 flips. But if you keep tossing that coin into the air, the net long-term results are going to reveal exactly what probability dictates: a 50-50 proposition. A slot machine may be programmed to pay back to players 88 percent of the money that is played, which leaves a 12 percent casino “hold,” or win. Does this mean that when you sit down and play $100 on that machine, you will walk away with $88 dollars while giving the casino a $12 profit? You know the answer. You could easily hit a jackpot in the hundreds or thousands of dollars during your playing session. You could also win some, lose some, or drop your entire $100 in a matter of minutes. If a machine is programmed to pay back 88 percent of the money that is played, what can really happen is that during the 30 minutes you are playing, the payback percentage could turn out to be 40 percent, or 60 percent, or

The mathematical odds against hitting a jackpot on a particular machine can be in the hundreds-of-thousands-to-one against the player, yet it is possible for the top jackpot to be paid twice in the same day or twice in the same playing session for that matter. The odds never change from spin to spin. If you hit a jackpot, you have the same probability of hitting another jackpot on the very next play. Over the long haul, therefore, there really are no “hot” machines or “cold” machines. There are no “loose” machines or “tight” machines. Certainly not in today’s intensely regulated and scrutinized state sanctioned gaming properties. So does it really matter what game you choose to play? Essentially, it doesn’t. Some games are more volatile than others in that smaller awards are more frequent at the expense of more substantial awards and vice versa. Other than that, just find a machine you enjoy playing and hope that the variation in mathematical probability that will occur during your playing session will beat the odds in your favor!

Imagine thinking you’ve won a sum of money that would keep you in champagne and diamonds for the rest of your life, and then being told you’d won a steak dinner instead. That’s exactly what happened to Katrina Bookman of Queens, NY, seen here last August posing in a selfie at New York’s Resorts World Casino next to the Sphinx slot machine, whose screen clearly shows a grand prize of $42,949,672.76. But the casino claims it was a glitch. Their consolation prize? A steak dinner. The mother of four turned that down flat, and instead hired lawyer Alan Ripka, who, in a 17-page complaint, outlines the rationale for seeking $43 million in damages from the casino.
