KRIS KRISTOFFERSON Friday, November 3 at 8pm
Heralded as an artist’s artist, three-time GRAMMY winner Kris Kristofferson is performing at Legend’s Theater at Route 66 Casino Hotel on November 3. Kris has recorded 30 albums, including three with pals Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings as part of the Highwaymen. Kristofferson has spent three decades performing concerts all over the world, in most recent years in a solo acoustic setting, which puts the focus on the songs. Kristofferson achieved remarkable success as a country songwriter at the start of the 1970s. His songs “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” and “For the Good Times,” all chart-topping hits, helped redefine country songwriting. In addition to many other awards, Kristofferson is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, winner of the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriter Hall of Fame, and was honored with the American Veteran’s Association’s Veteran of the Year Award in 2002. His renown as a songwriter triggered Kristofferson’s successful career as an actor. His breakout performance was in the megahit A Star is Born, with Barbara Streisand, for which he won a 1977 Golden Globe for Best Actor. He would go on to make more than 70 films, including the cult favorite Blade trilogy, Lone Star, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Ladies Make Impact in Green Felt Jungle of Poker By John G. Brokopp Female poker players are a minority. They represented only 5.4 percent of the 120,995 entries taken at this year’s World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some very good female players. Vanessa Selbst, from Brooklyn, NY, ranks 24th on the all-time poker-player earnings list, with more than $11.8 million gleaned from competing around the globe against the world’s best players. Other world-class female players include Americans Kathy Liebert (more than $6.1 million) and Annie Duke (more than $4.2 million). Duke won $2 million for her victory in the Tournament of Champions at the World Series of Poker in 2004. Another female notable, Annette Obrestad, stunned the poker world when the day before her 19th birthday she won the inaugural World Series of Poker Europe Main Event in 2007 and collected one million-pound sterling ($2.01 million) first prize. And then there’s Midwest-based Sarah Stefan. Stefan, who identifies herself as a recreational player and her love of the game as a hobby, nonetheless has banked $22,848 in live tournament action at casinos in Northwest Indiana and Las Vegas since racking up her first “cash” in 2012. Because she enjoys a career as a third grade school teacher for Chicago Public Schools, Stefan plays the game she loves on a limited basis when time permits in the evenings, on weekends, and during summer vacation. One of the highlights of her young career came this summer in June at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, when she competed in bracelet Event #47, the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Monster Stack Tournament. She finished 913 out of 6,716, and cashed for $2,359. As is common with so many people who love to play cards, Stefan was exposed to the game as a child when her family would gather at home on holidays. “My grandma would bring over a deck of cards and we’d all sit down to play,” she has said. “It is where I learned all the basics of the game, including the ranking of hands.” She continued on, playing with friends in high school and in college, eventually graduating to the poker rooms at regional casinos when time permitted. “When I started to get serious about the game, I realized that it takes a lot of time, efSarah Stefan plays competitive poker parttime and is a third-grade teacher. fort, and playing experience to become competitive,” she continued. “I learned a lot from watching tournaments on TV and from poker training videos.” Just as statistics revealed during the 2017 World Series of Poker, the game in local gaming markets is dominated by male players as well. When asked what it is like for a female to compete, Stefan is quoted as saying: “The great majority of men play against me the same as they would any opponent. I’ve also encountered men who, when they see me at the table, say ‘I’ve never played against a woman before’ and just go to another table, as if not wanting to get involved.” At the other end of the spectrum, she said, are men who are patronizing. They see a woman at the table, and take them under their wing, so to speak, to explain the rules as if they had never played before. Whether male or female, high-level poker players need to hone intense concentration skills. The rules of play are only a fraction of what it takes to win. It’s really a mind game. Stefan concurs: “A lot of the strategy revolves around watching how your opponents bet or the timing of how fast it takes them to make a decision. You have to really be aware of how they pursue you, meaning that you have to pay attention to the ‘story’ they are telling during the course of a hand. You have to think to yourself what hand they could possibly be holding and then ponder the range of probabilities. Math has a lot to do with playing poker successfully.”

GEORGE LOPEZ Friday, October 13 at 8pm In the pantheon of great Latino comic artists, George Lopez is considered the best. His multi-faceted career includes his start in show business as a Los Angeles morning radio show host in 1999, and culminates with television’s groundbreaking sitcom, George Lopez, which ran for six seasons on ABC starting in 2002. After the show was cancelled in 2007, Lopez concentrated on stand up and comedy specials, putting out a series of films for HBO that earned Grammy nominations and other critical and commercial accolades. Lopez has also enjoyed a long career as a dramatic and comedic actor, earning praise for his performances in Real Women Have Curves, Bread and Roses, The Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl, and The Spy Next Door with Jackie Chan. But he is perhaps best known for the voice of Papi in the Beverly Hills Chihuahau movies, and the voice of Rafael the toucan in the animated hit Rio. Most recently, Lopez produced and starred in the Lionsgate drama, Spare Parts, which is based on a true story about four undocumented Mexican-American teenagers from Phoenix who team up to build an underwater robot that wins a national competition. When Blind Melon’s melodic “No Rain” hit the airwaves in 1992, it heralded almost instant success for the band and its charismatic lead singer, Shannon Hoon.
