Man Uses Slot Winnings to Honor Las Vegas Shooting Victims
Lady Luck can be fickle, but she came through for at least one person on November 7, 2017. That was the day that Tommy Maher, a Long Island, NY, firefighter, set out on his 18-day, 9,500-mile journey to honor the victims of the Las Vegas mass shooting. His intention was to meet with as many of the victims and their families as possible, and perform a random act of kindness in each of their names. When he hit the road, in a van whose sides he’d painted with the phrase “Pay it forward,” he had only $1,000 and one credit card in his pocket. He also had a nagging feeling he needed to do one more thing before leaving. In an interview with ABC News, Maher said he decided to stop at his local casino, the Aqueduct, to try his luck at the slots. He was about to Photos courtesy Tommy Maher pack it in and leave after two hours of overall losses, when he stopped at a penny machine near the door. Within 10 minutes, he’d hit a jackpot of $2,400. A GoFundMe page started by his friend raised another $7,200. Maher’s random acts of kindness included buying breakfast for cars behind him at drive-thrus, paying for peoples’ groceries, giving money to the homeless, and leaving $100 tips for waiters and waitresses. The Four Tops

Their repertoire has included soul music, R&B, disco, adult contemporary, doo-wop, jazz, and show tunes.
